Route 1

En route you can visit the cave temple of Dambulla. Also you will get the chance to visit Nalanda gedige. This place is considered to be the middle point of Sri Lanka since the days of the kings. Evening visit to watch wild life will be breathtaking after having a ride on an elephants back. Night will be at Sigiriya or Habarana. Day 4 Climb Sigiriya rock fortress after breakfast, you can also visit the monastery at Pidurangala. You will take a hot air balloon ride in Habarana after the climb. In evening proceed to Girithale or Polonnaruwa for the night stay. If time permits you can visit the wild life museum in Girithale.

Day 5 Take the morning to tour around ruins of this ancient capital. You will be having lunch at Polonnaruwa, and then you will be going to Pasikudah beach. Night will be spent at Pasikudah. Day 6 Spend your time on the beach. Enjoy the sunshine at this wavy beach. Day 7 You will head back to Katunayake air port.

Anuradhapura

This city is hailed to be the birth place of Sinhala civilization. It was used as the capital of this island from 4th century B.C according to epic of Sinhala history Mahawansa. Until 11th century A.D this was the capital of Sri Lanka and it is regarded as one of the most stable and durable centers of political power in South East Asia during its existence. City of Anuradhapura is highly regarded highly sacred by Buddhists all around the world. A unique feature about this city is that it is surrounded by Buddhist monasteries which are built by the ancient kings who ruled the land from this capital. Anuradhapura was the capital of this island from 4th B.C to 11th A.D. But as the protecting wilderness round it diminished with prosperity, and ever growing hunger for the royal succession was an apparent, it became a common target of South Indian expansion. The finale came when the Chola King Rajaraja I invaded Sri Lanka, looted and burnt the city to ashes. Anuradhapura was finally abandoned and the Capital withdrawn to more Immune Polonnaruwa. But the monuments of its glory days survive, giving everyone a chance re imagine its wonder days.

Kandy

Kandy, the last royal capital of Sri Lanka is hill capital of the island which allures numerous tourists. Geographically it is situated 115kM from Colombo at 465 meters above mean sea level. Polonnaruwa

UNESCO world heritage site is Sri Lankas 2nd capital and in its time Sri Lanka was called the granary of orient. The vast irrigation network with reservoirs that look like natural in-land seas sustained such epic scales in rice cultivation. It became the capital of Sri Lanka following the decline of Anuradhapura and helped the Sinhala Buddhist culture to flourish under its time continuing on from its predecessor Anuradhapura. The name Polonnaruwa derives from a name of a Rishi who is thought to be the originator of this city long before the written history of Sri Lanka is recorded. This immense capital created by the great King Parakramabahu I, in the 12th century A.D, is one of history's most astonishing urban creations, both because of its unusual dimensions and because of the very special relationship of its buildings with the natural setting. Polonnaruwa was first declared the capital city by King Vijayabahu I, who defeated the Chola invaders in 1070 AD to reunite the country once more under a local leader. Today the ancient city of Polonnaruwa remains one of the best planned archeological relic sites in the country In context of today this great city with its preserved ruins and restored ancient irrigation reservoirs is a must visit cultural destination of anyone who likes to explore this gem of an island. Sigiriya

Sigiriya (Lion Rock) is a unique witness to the civilization of this wonderful island during the years of the reign of king Kassapa/ Kashyapa. Sigiriya is a large stone and ancient rock fortress and a palace located north of Matale district. Surrounded by the remains of an extensive network of gardens, reservoirs, and other structures it is a popular destination among tourists to Sri Lanka. Fescos: Apsara paintings Another item that Sigirya is world renowned for is its rock paintings that are half way up the rock which are beautifully painted bare breast maidens whose identity is still a mystery. Mirror wall Just beneath the Apsara paintings, there is the Mirror Wall, full of very ancient graffiti from 8th century. Some of it is so old that the language is no longer understandable. The Apsara paintings brought pilgrims from all over the world, many of whom left verses on varying subjects such as love, irony, and experiences of all sorts messages and poems to the ladies on this wall.

Dambulla

Named as a World Heritage site in 1991 by UNESCO, Dambulla Cave Temple is the largest and finest preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. Located in Dambulla, in the central region of the island, which includes more than 80 caves, Dambulla Cave Temple features five soundly preserved caves, each of which harbors ancient statues of the Buddha with engraved wall paintings displaying life of Buddhas life. There are about 80 caves in the surrounding and some of them have been used by the monks as meditation sites. Architect of this cave temple is King Valagamba who was a ruler during the Anuradhapura era. The temple is a ideal location to view progress of the ancient Sri Lankan arts since it contain work from different eras. This has occurred since many improvements and additions have been performed to the sculptures and paintings over the years. Early Sri Lankans would have lived in these cave complexes before the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka as there are burial sites with human skeletons about 2700 years old, in Ibbankatuwa abutting the Dambulla temple.

Nuwara Eliya

Nuwara Eliya, the "city of lights," is the highest town in Sri Lanka and that makes the climate more pleasant than any other part of the country. Nuwara Eliya is a town in the central highlands of Sri Lanka with a picturesque landscape, located at an altitude of 1,868 m (6,128 ft) and is considered to be the most important location for Tea production in Sri Lanka. Surrounded by lush tea plantations, Nuwara Eliya is the main hill resort of Sri Lanka and the heart of the tea industry. Once a pleasure retreats of the European planters the town is still very much an English town with many English style bungalows and buildings. Nuwara Eliya offers many activities for tourists including visits to tea plantations, golfing, horse riding, boating, hiking and of course exploring the beauty of the landscaped gardens, waterfalls and plateaus. The town is also overlooked by Pidurutalagala, the tallest mountain in Sri Lanka, in close vicinity there is Grate Western and Hakkagala which also comes in to the top 10 in Sri Lanka. A must place to visit around Nuwara Eliya is Horton Plains and worlds end. Horton plains is a plateau at an altitude of 2,1002,300 meters (6,9007,500 ft) is rich in biodiversity and many species found here are endemic to the region. The Horton Plains are the headwaters of three major Sri Lankan rivers, the Mahaweli, Kelani, and Walawe. The plains' vegetation is grasslands interspersed with montane forest, and home to many endemic woody plants. Large herds of Sri Lankan Sambar Deer feature as typical mammals, and the park is also an Important Bird Area with many species not only endemic to Sri Lanka but restricted to the Horton Plains. Worlds end is a sheer drop from Nuwara Eliya to Rathnapura district, which measures at 870 m (2,854 ft), this phenomenon attracts the attention of most tourist visiting the national park. Sinharaja Forest

This is the only remaining virgin rainforest in Sri Lanka. Sinharaja Forest Reserve is a national park and a biodiversity hotspot in Sri Lanka. Due to its international significance, it has been designated a Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This tropical lowland rainforest compassing an area of 18900 acres is located within Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces of the south-west lowland wet zone of Sri Lanka. Trekking Sinharaja is a wonderful experience and is undertaken by many tourists who come to visit this island paradise. Studies on the fauna of Sinharaja have revealed that there is a high degree of endemism among the butterflies, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals; it is believed to be greater than 50%. 19 of Sri Lankas 20 species of endemic bird species in Sri Lanka are found in the Sinharaja rain forest. Yala National Park

Yala National Park is the second largest and most visited of all the National parks in Sri Lanka. It is placed in the southeast region of the country, and lies in Southern Province and Uva Province. Placed about 300 kilometers from Colombo the 979 sq kilometer park is home to leopards, crocodile, elephant, deer, bear, wild boar, wild buffalo and peacock. There are migratory birds such as flamingos and array of Sri Lankan birds which can be observed throughout the park. Yala was named as a wildlife sanctuary in 1900, and, along with Wilpattu it was one of the first two national parks in Sri Lanka, having been designated in 1938. The park is best known for its variety of wild animals. Park is situated in the dry semi-arid climatic region and rain is received mainly during the northeast monsoon. June to October Yala experience its dry season and rainy months are January and May. One must hire a four wheel drive to negate the terrain of this national park, which can be a quiet an experience at times. Sithul pawwa and Magul viharaya are two pilgrims sites that are in the premises of Yala national park. Salt plains of Palatupana are famous for bird watching and it attracts many enthusiasts.

Udawalawe National Park

Famous for its elephant population which numbers around 400, Udawalawe National Park is located 200 kilometers south east of Colombo city. It lies on the boundary of Sabaragamuwa and Uva Provinces, in Sri Lanka. Udawalawe is an important habitat for water birds and Sri Lankan Elephants. It is a popular tourist destination and the third most visited park in the country. It also houses the elephant transit home of the island, named as Ath Athuru Sewana. Udawalawe lies on the boundary of Sri Lanka's wet and dry zones. Plains dominate the topography, though there are also some mountainous areas. The climate in the Park is characterised by a seasonal rainfall and uniformly high temperature conditions. The average annual rainfall is about 1500 mm in the south end, and it gradually increases towards the north. The annual average temperature is about 32 C. Other than elephants many of Sri Lankas animal species can be seen throughout Udawalawe. Mainly Spotted Deer, Wild Boar and Sambur, also other species observed includes Toque Monkey, Grey Langur. Giant Squirrel, Sloth Bear, Palm Civet, Leopard, Black-naped Hare, Golden Palm Civet and four species of mongoose. With regarding to birds, about 184 bird species have been recorded from the Park. Eight of these are endemic and at least 12 are considered as threatened. There are about 21 species of fish have been located in Udawalawe National park, only one out of those species is registered as endemic. When exploring Udawalawe one can also spot many of Sri Lankas reptile species and amphibians.

Wilpattu National Park

Wilpattu National Park is a popular tourist destination in Sri Lanka. It is located about 180 Kilometers North West to the Colombo city. This park is considered to be the largest among national parks in Sri Lanka. Wilpattu National Park is 131, 693 hectares and ranges from 0 to 152 meters above sea level. On the west, the national park is bordered by the Indian Ocean. To its south it is Kala Oya and to the North, the Wilpattu National Park is bordered by Modaragam Aru. Nearly sixty lakes (Willu) and tanks are found spread throughout Wilpattu and name Wilpattu means land of lakes. There are about 31 species of mammals are found in Wilpattu National Park and park is famous around the world for its Leopard population and sloth bears. One can also observe Spotted Deer, Barking Deer, jackals, sambhur, barking deer, mouse deer Wild boar, Water Buffalo and Mugger Crocodiles. The commonly found reptiles in the Wilpattu National Park are common cobra, mugger crocodile, rat snake etc. Star tortoises, soft shelled turtles and pond turtles. Many species of birds like whistling teal, spoonbill, large white egret, pin tail, white ibis, purple heron etc are seen here. As birds Sri Lanka Jungle fowl, Garganey, Pin tail, Whistling teal, Spoonbill, White ibis, large white egret, Cattle egret and Purple heron and many species of Eagles can be observed in Wilpattu National Park. Wilpattu has three types of vegetation low land scrubs and salt grass near the coastal area, Monsoon scrubs of very low stature and dense forests which is more towards the inland.

Southern beach Matara

Southern coastal town of Sri Lanka has many sandy beaches that attract a lot of attention from people all around the world. Located 160 kilometers south of Colombo, it has been under the rule of Dutch and Portuguese from the 16th century A.D. The star shaped fort at Matara is an unusual and a unique structure. There are several beautiful and less crowded beaches along the coast between Galle and Matara and the closest to the town is at Polhena. It is 2 km away from the city center and anybody can swim safely because it is naturally fenced with coral reef towards the sea. The river Nilwala which runs through the city meets the sea at Totamuna, which is also a part of the city. The Crow Island is a small island facing the beach and it is a spectacular sight with its greenery filled with trees. Another attraction is a 25m high colorful Buddha statue built at Veherahena Temple. Close by the city there is devinuwara which considered being the southernmost point in Sri Lanka. Matara is famous for its two stilt fishing locations. The fishermen rest on stilts fixed on shallow water and use rods for fishing. This unique method of fishing is still practiced today.

Galle

Galle is a city situated on the southwestern tip of Sri Lanka, 119 km from Colombo and it is the capital city of Southern Province of Sri Lanka. The city itself has a vibrant commercial district thats also urbanized and often charmless, but passes through one of the Fort gates and you are transported back to the Dutch colonial era. Inside the fort it resembles an ancient Dutch fort than a southern Sri Lankan coastal city. Galle enjoys a nice coast line. And it's a district that enjoys a great variance of scenarios, from beaches to marsh lands to dry planes to hills. Bringing a variety of must sees for traveler in this part of the island. It is believed that Galle is the famous port city Tar shish in King Solomons stories; famous for ivory and many valuables during that era. Distinctive feature of gall is its fort. Built by the Dutch beginning in 1663, the 36-hectare Fort occupies most of the promontory that forms the older part of Galle. Galle is considered to be the best example of a fortified city engineered by Europeans in south and Southeast Asia, presenting the interaction between European architectural styles and south Asian traditions. Hikkaduwa is located in the Southern Province, about 17 km north-west of Galle. Hikkaduwa is famous for its beach, surfing, corals and night life. Beautiful white sand beaches, colorful coral reefs and excellent surfing opportunities are attracting people from all over the world. It is best to surf during its dry season, November to March.

Unawatuna

This is a coastal village in Galle district of Sri Lanka situated few kilometers aways from Galle. Unawatuna is a major tourist attraction and famous for its beautiful beaches and corals. This has been acclaimed amongst 12 best beaches in the world, making it a popular destination among beach lovers all around the world. Unawatuna doesnt offer the same opportunities for surfing or diving as other parts of the coast but the waves are good for swimming and the sands are clean and white. Unawatuna is also famous for its bird population and mangroves, although some have been damaged due to brainless constructions carried out by people. Over sixty species of endemic birds have been sighted in and around Unawatuna, not something Unawatuna is famous for but very much worth if you are interested.

Koggala

Another one of the wonderful beaches of southern Sri Lanka, Filled with white sand it is small bun doesnt lack any beauty in comparison with other beaches. Beaches are uncrowned but surrounded by places of interest. Little beach restaurants offer fresh seafood and provide excellent views overlooking the picturesque Bay. One can also visit Koggala lake and turtle hatchery which are close by.

Pasikudah and Kalkudah

Located in Batticaloa district in Sri Lanka this beach town is around 290 kilometers away from city of Colombo. Beaches of Pasikudah and Kalkudah have rarely been molested. Pasikudah is a bay protected from the ocean. One can experience the soft touch of sand on the beach and 200-300 meters towards the sea. These two beaches have rarely been molested by the touch of humans. Pasikudah is a safe place for individuals who are learning to swim because of its lack of depth. If one has to get his chest or neck wet, he or she might have to walk for more than 100 meters outward. Haputhale

At an elevation of 4695 Ft above sea level, Haputhale is blessed with natural beauty. The area has a rich bio-diversity dense with numerous varieties of flora and fauna. The town has a cooler climate than its surroundings, due to its elevation. The Haputhale pass allows views across the Southern plains of Sri Lanka. The South-West boundary of Uva basin is marked by the Haputhale mountain ridges, which continue on to Horton Plains and Adam's Peak to the west. CNN named it as one of the most overlooked destination in South East Asia. From its railways station one can view up to Sri Lankas southern coastal belt and the elevation change of nearly 4000-5000 ft. Haputhale is famous for its tea plantations, and has the famous Adisham bungalow within its proximity. At dambethanna estate in Haputhale you can view 5 districts of Sri Lanka if the weather is in a good mood. North of Haputhale is Sri Lankas hill country up towards Nuwara Eliya. One can indulge themselves to accommodate at many beautiful bungalows of Sri Lanka at Haputhale.

Bandarawela

Bandarawela is located in the Uva province of Sri Lanka, is a city with a mild climate. It is about 200 kilometers away from city of Colombo and 125 kilometers away from Kandy. Bandarawela can be accessed by both railway and road, making it an easily reachable popular destination among tourists. Bandarawela town, tinted with a colonial past resting among lush forestation has found its niche among its visitors as a base for eco-tourism. Its famous for its lush tea plantations like green carpets, pristine mountain air, strawberries and pears. The Dowa Rock Temple, with its unfinished Buddha Statue of about 15ft carved onto the rock face, the Shrine Room built into the rock cave and the entrance to the tunnel which is supposed to have linked Dowa to several distant temples underground is in close vicinity to the town. Also one will be blessed to gaze upon many cascading waterfalls and misty mountain ranges from this hill town of the island. You will always be welcomed to explore these mountain ranges nearby.

Ella

Ella is a small village in the highlands of Sri Lanka. It lies at an altitude of about 1,000 meters above sea level surrounded by tea plantations. It is about 230 kilometers away from Colombo and around 160 kilometers away from Kandy. Most visitors to Ella only spend a couple of days there. But if you are willing to travel out of town, you can find plenty of things to do to keep you occupied. You will get the chance to climb few mountain peaks around Ella. Ella gap is well known around the world for its breathtaking views. Its viewing point presents with views on a fine day stretching right across the South Coast of Sri Lanka.
