WHAT IS TEACHING ?

Definition of Teaching

Organizing and guiding of the process in which students learn. Teachers role is to develop the acquisition of information, understanding and skills by the students. A process which students learn also gas implications for the attributes of teachers. Teachers may exhibit charm, good looks, lecture brilliantly, manage a classroom well and use variety of methods and medium. Teaching is the manipulation of environmental variables to cause predicted changes in learners behavior.
The teachers got to do something, change something. About the only things teachers can change are aspects of the environment surrounding the learners, the displays the learners see, the words the learners hear, etc. The environmental variables include not just antecedents, but also consequences (what happens after learners do something), and teachers manipulate them; provide feedback, rewards and corrections.
Cause

Teaching should be intentional on the part of the teacher. If a teacher does not want to causeprecipitate or induce something, then why teach?
Predicted Changes
Its important to be having a goal or an objective for teaching. After all, if one does not predict the outcomes of teaching, then doing anything can count as teaching. Predicting what learners will be able to do as a result of what one calls teaching makes the teacher accountable. Without some relatively permanent difference in what they learners know or can do compared to what they used to be able to do, its hard to argue that there was anything learned.
Behavior

Learning is the development of new knowledge, skill, attitudes as an individual interacts with information and the environment. Learning, in psychology, the process by which a relatively lasting change in potential behavior occurs as a result of practice or experience. Learning takes place all the time when the learners interact with each other, media and teachers. Learning is the process of acquiring knowledge, skills, attitudes, or values, through study, experience, or teaching.

Learning causes a change of behavior that is persistent, measurable, and specified or allows an individual to formulate a new mental construct or revise a prior mental construct (conceptual knowledge such as attitudes or values). It is a process that depends on experience and leads to long-term changes in behavior potential. Behavior potential describes the possible behavior of an individual (not actual behavior) in a given situation in order to achieve a goal. It includes the capacity of organizations to anticipate and adapt to evolving values, technologies, performance standards and constituent expectations.

Instruction is the arrangement of information and environment to facilitate learning. By environment, not only where instruction takes place but also the methods, media and technology needs to convey information and guide the learners study. Successful instructional practices have features that are supported by virtually all the various perspectives: Active participation Effective learning happens when students are actively engaged in meaningful tasks, interacting with the content.

Practice Practice especially in varying contexts improves retention rate and the ability to apply the new knowledge, skill and attitude. Individual Differences Effective methods allow individuals to progress at different rates, cover different materials and even participate in different activities. Feedback Learners need to know if their thinking is on the right track, feedback may be provided by teacher correction. Realistic Contexts We are most likely to remember and apply knowledge that is presented in real world context. Social Interaction Tutors or group members can provide a number of pedagogical as well as social supports.
