READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE BEGINNING TO STITCH! General Instructions: Cross stitch over two fabric threads using four strands of floss. Cross stitch overone using two strands of floss. When two floss colors are bracketed together, use two strands of each when stitching overtwo, and one strand of each when stitching over-one. Backstitch using two strands of floss unless indicated otherwise. Attach beads after all other stitching has been completed using one strand of floss. Stitch in the order given: 1. Satin stitch border: Using one strand of white pearl cotton, make the satin stitch blocks that surround the design. Move from one block to the next without ending your thread. Count carefully. I usually recommend beginning with a border if a design has one in order to center the design on the fabric, to make sure you have *enough* fabric, and to provide yourself with a landmark against which counting can be doublechecked. 2. Complete all cross stitching: For over-two stitching, refer to the main chart. For over-one stitching (the bird), refer to the over-one chart. The backstitch outline of the bird on the main chart should be used for placement purposes only. 3. Backstitch the over-two stitching: 3041 - flowers 3362 - all stems and leaves of flowers within the border 523 - use four strands: make lazy daisy leaves within the border 4. Backstitch over-one stitching: 3042 - one strand: birds wing and belly 645 - two strands: make beak using long straight stitches, and backstitch birds foot.

5. Corner flower motifs: Make stems: use two strands 3362 Make lazy daisy leaves: black lines: four strands 3362 gray lines: four strands 523 6. Attach beads: flower centers: use 3041 vines: use 3866 corner flowers: use 3866 birds eye: use: 3362 Tips for Over-One Stitching: 1. Perhaps the most important thing to remember when stitching over-one is to stitch with VERY LIGHT tension. Any extra pressure on the floss will pull the legs of the stitches in behind the fabric threads... which is very frustrating! 2. In solidly stitched areas, especially on very fine fabric counts, you may want to consider beginning in the center of the area, and stitch outward toward the edges of the solidly stitched area. Its much easier than working from the edges inward: it gets very crowded! 3. I have found that stitching over-one a using sharp needle rather than a blunt tapestry needle sometimes yields more satisfactory results. I almost always backstitch over-one using a sharp needle. 4. Magnification and proper lighting are a must! Both make stitching over-one on high count fabrics much more enjoyable. A Finishing Suggestion: Trim the stitched piece about 1/2 inch away from the stitching. Cut a piece of backing fabric the same size. Place right sides together, and stitch around the edges, (by hand or machine) fairly close to the stitching. Leave a small opening to turn the piece right side out. Stuff with a bit of fiberfill (and a weight) if desired. Slip stitch the opening closed. Handstitch some trim such as braid or torsade to the outer edges of the piece if desired, remembering to make a loop for hanging.
