By Purchasing the Limited Edition Seeds, Consumers Can Brighten Someones Day While Donating to Cancer Research.
October 15, 2012 (ST. LOUIS, MO) Seeds of Happiness, in conjunction with Octobers national observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, has created a limited edition pink seed. A portion of the proceeds from each bag of pink seeds sold during the month of October will go directly to the American Cancer Society in support of their efforts for breast-cancer research.

The limited edition, handmade pink ceramic smiley faces are a simple, easy way to brighten someones day, as well as spread awareness about breast cancer and raise money to research a cure. They are packaged in bags of 10 for $18. A story card, detailing the Seeds of Happiness story, as well as explaining the causemarketing program, is included with each bag. For every bag sold during the month of October, ten percent of the purchase price will be donated to the American Cancer Society.

From its inception, giving back to the community has been a core value of Seeds of Happiness. The company, based in Kirkwood, Mo., has partnered with a number of charitable organizations including Dawsons Hairless Heroes, St. Baldricks Foundation, Shriners Hospital for Children, Melanoma Society and Williams Syndrome Association on specialty seeds.

clay I made into little smiles to give out to friends who were going through hard times and needed a little smile, said Mark Borella, founder of Seeds of Happiness. That was in 2006. Since then I have given out thousands of smiles to folks, a handful at a time. In turn, they share them and their story with friends from around the globe in need of a smile.

Consumers may purchase the limited edition pink seeds by visiting the Seeds of Happiness website: www.seedsofhappiness.com.

Are we having Indian summer?

What a fall it has been here in El Paso! Temperatures have been running above normal for September and early October (upper 80s and low 90s). I had a recent conversation with a KVIA viewer that referred to our recent weather as being an Indian summer. We had a good conversation about the use of this terminology. An Indian summer refers to a time of year when temperatures are well above normal. Its a period of about a week that is associated with warm, calm weather occurring in the autumn months. Many references point out that a true Indian summer can not occur until there has been a frost or killing freeze (which we havent had). In most instances, this is a weather phenomenon that occurs in the fall. It can be applied in winter, as long as an area experiences well above average temperatures. I was curious how the term Indian summer came about. I checked out many sources as to the origins and there are many. According the 1985 Old

The Sin Fin Column

Judge Edward S. Marquez: A fighter for El Paso in more ways than one ?
Ive always been an admirer of Judge Edward S. Marquez I used to know him as Eddie when I was a reporter/columnist with the El Paso Herald-Post. He was a great man who took his job very seriously and he knew what El Paso needed from the State of Texas. My first memory of him was in 1982, when I was given an award for my work as a journalist by a group of Chicano activists. Eddie was the keynote speaker at the Chamizal National Memorial and he started his speech with a joke. It seems that a burglar was caught breaking and entering into a business. He was a Mexican and couldnt speak English, or, at least, thats what he told the judge. Why did you break into that business, the judge asked him. Well, the guy said, there was a sign that said, forsale, no le hace. The judge explained that the sign actually read, For Sale, No Lease. I was reminded of Eddie last Saturday when I visited the Judge Edward S. Marquez Mission Valley Branch Library at 610 North Yarbrough. I really like that library, especially as it was named for my friend. He would have been proud to have a library dedicated in his honor, named for him. That library has, by far, the best bookstore of all the libraries that sell books. Not only do they offer hundreds of books at a discount, but, the staff is wonderful, helpful, and always ready to assist customers. If you dont see it, ask for it, theyll find it for you. This would be appropriate for a library that bears his name, because thats the kind of person he was strong, sympathetic, kind, and helpful. Not only that, but he loved to write. Invariably, when I would run into him downtown, he would tell me about the latest short story which he had written. He loved to write fiction. Joe, do me a favor and read my latest, he would honor me by letting me read his latest attempt at short story writing. I would take his story back to my office and marvel at his creative juices. Judge, I would say to him when next I would see him, I really like your stories. You should try to get them published. Nobody writes like you. They were good, but, he was too shy and not very confident about his writing. Im sure, however, that his family has a collection of his stories that need to be published. What a legacy that would be from a man who loved El Paso. In fact, he loved his city so much that he once took on the entire state of Texas. Tired of El Paso always being short changed when it came to funding by the state, he decided to take matters into his own hands. He sued the state because he felt that officials in Austin, including then-Governor Ann Richards, didnt care about El Paso because the city was largely a Mexican city and a border-town to boot. To give you an example, El Paso was getting about $30 million for roads and bridges, while Austin, Dallas, Houston, and other cities, were getting upwards of $200 million. In the Judges eyes, this was shameful behavior by the state. He was so tired of his city being shortchanged, that he convened a Court of Criminal Inquiry. Judge Marquez issued subpoenas for top officials, including Gov. Richards. He went after the Departments of Aging, Human Services, Mental Health and Retardation, and transportation. In challenging powerful bureaucrats, he was forcing them to explain why El Paso was allotted a mere $43 per capita in state highway funding in 1991, but, $220 per capita in Austin. The states excuse: El Paso got 360 days of sunshine a year, cutting maintenance costs. But, this wasnt good enough for the Judge. With the help of Eliot Shapleigh and State Senator Jose Rodriguez, the Court of Inquiry resulted in El Paso receiving more than $100 million for roads and bridges the following year. Or, at least, thats the way I understood it. The gist of it is that the state had always short-changed border communities, and the Judges action gave them the courage to take on the state to change its funding mechanisms. Of course, not every El Paso elected official agreed with Eddie. They felt that his action would anger those bureaucrats who would make financing decisions. But, Eddie didnt care. You see, he was a fighter in more ways than one. Not only did he take on powerhouses in the State of Texas, but, he also took on wrestlers as Venganza Negra, when he wrestled in Austin as a law student. I never knew this about Eddie. I also didnt know that he had attained a second-degree black belt in the martial arts discipline of Aikido. He never spoke about these aspects of his life. I also didnt know that the only criticism of the Judge was brought forth by a group of lawyers when they complained that he had a habit of munching on popcorn while presiding over cases. Can you imagine? A fearless fighter for the rights of all El Pasoans, munching on popcorn? And, thats the only black mark against him? Ill tell you what next major project in El Paso that benefits its citizens lets name it after the Judge. He deserves it. Dont you agree? Sin Fin

By Sharon Mosley Chic outerwear can be one of the best ways this fall and winter to top off your wardrobe. The newest coats are bigger and bolder a fresh way to cover up in oversized silhouettes and brighter colors. Forget the boring basics. After all, we wear our coats day in and day out. They say a lot about our personal sense of style. Check out these new trends. The menswear topcoat, one of the season's hottest outerwear looks, is a little on the slouchy size. Some with sculpted exaggerated shoulders and lapels, often in knee-lengths in colorful jewel tones, cobalt blue, ruby red and emerald green are a few of the more vivid favorites. Or if you're more of the classic, earthy type, there are plenty of rusts, camels and grays to round out your winter wardrobe.

gray winter days. Again, beware the doughboy look.

The blanket coat: If you really

want to get comfy in your coat, choose a blanket-style wrap or coat in a graphic stripe or check. Many of this season's blanket coats have a Western vibe and make great weekend toppers when worn with boots and jeans.

The princess coat: Dressed up or

down, this tailored look, often detailed with pleats and seams, can be a stylish outerwear alternative for dresses and pantsuits. The traditional A-line shape is flattering on most figures and is a classic coat silhouette that will see you through many years to come.

The biker jacket: There are plenty

of ways to get one of the hottest trends into your coat wardrobe with the edgy look of leather, whether it's an all-leather look in the ever-popular black or just a touch in a collar, a sleeve or lapel. But one of the most popular silhouettes riding into fall is the traditional "biker" jacket updated with generous shapes in colorful suedes and textured leathers. We've come a long way, James Dean. The military-inspired coat: It's

all about the details on this style. You don't have to feel like you're off to basic duty, but instead choose a more sophisticated "officers" coat with just a hint of the brass buttons, pocket flaps, epaulets, belts and buckles.

The parka: Another fall favorite, this

ski-inspired shape is a great winter warm-up when the temperature hits below the freezing mark. In drawstring anorak styles, parkas can be even more streamlined and stylish, and you won't risk feeling like the Pillsbury Dough Boy. Look for even more value with inside-out reversible parkas.

The puffy vest: Also akin to the skiinspired trend, the puffier vest is one solution to outerwear that will stave off the chills and yet easily layer over chunky knits and T-shirts. In bright colors, this piece will be a real perk for

MARINE VET'S DECISION-MAKING HINTS AT A MORE SERIOUS ISSUE

DEAR ABBY: This is in response to "Worried Mom in Gainesville, Fla." (July 13), whose son was not allowed to re-enlist in the Marine Corps. I hate to say this, but that young man knew darned well when he got those tattoos he would not be able to re-enlist. The U.S. Navy (which the Marine Corps "technically" falls under) passed the New Enlistment Tattoo Policy in January 2003, with the Marine Corps adding its policy in April 2007. -- SPOUSE OF RETIRED NAVY CPO DEAR SPOUSE: You are correct. Many readers wrote to say the Navy had passed new tattoo policies in 2003 and the Marine Corps followed suit in 2007. If re-enlisting is so important to "Worried Mom's" son, all he needs to do is have his "tatts" removed. Read on: DEAR ABBY: The issue isn't time served or his honorable discharge. The Marine Times recently published an article on Marine policy regarding tattoos. The Corps seeks to discourage full-sleeve tattoos and tattoos above the neck. They are regarded as unprofessional in appearance and may incorporate gang-related symbols. "Worried Mom's" son likely knew the guidelines. The mother said her son is bored and lacks focus in college. This suggests he may have PTSD. His desire to enlist in the French Foreign Legion may have short-term gains, but it may also compound mental health problems. -- MARC IN SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. DEAR ABBY: The nonsense about joining the French Foreign Legion shows that the young man lacks maturity. He chose to get the tattoos; he can either have laser removal or live with his decision. He wants to be a Marine and is crying about a regulation he does not like? That is definitely not Marine quality! It appears he needs a serious dose of maturity. -- CHRIS IN INDEPENDENCE, MO. DEAR ABBY: The French Foreign Legion is a rational choice for this bored veteran of two tours in Iraq. After three five-year enlistments, he will be eligible to retire. Plus, the legion will

Its Crunch Time in America, So Lets Play Ball

All of this 2012 election talk of small ball-big ball issues has really got me focused on the best ball you can have to strengthen and stabilize your core. Yes, I'm talking about the exercise ball, a low-cost and highly effective way to tighten ball is to engage your core muscles, and one of the best ways to do that is the well-executed tension in your core. Here's the action that makes all the difference: In the lifted position, hold and s-q-ue-e-z-e your Your exercise ball can also give you a great spinal stretch, front and back. First lie down on it, face up, and when you're stable, slowly lower your head toward the floor, leaning back as far as you can. Then flip over, in control, allowing your front body to drape over the ball, and let go of all your tension. Say "ahhhh..." Be sure to use the right size ball for your height. A basic rule is that your hips should not be lower than your knees when you sit on the ball. If you're shorter than 5-foot-9, use a 55-centimeter ball. If you're taller, use a 65-centimeter ball. Over 6 feet, and you'll need a 75-centimeter ball. Christie. Energy Express-O! No Debate About It

crunch. Ab crunches will not get rid of your belly fat; you cannot spot reduce! But crunches on a stability ball definitely contribute to a stronger core. Here's how to do the basic version: Position yourself on the exercise ball so that your knees are bent, your feet are flat on the floor, and you're lying on it with your lower back fully supported. Balls live to roll, so take your time and don't begin the crunch until you feel stable and relaxed. Then take a few deep breaths, focusing attention on your abdominal muscles. Cradle your head lightly in your hands, or keep your fingertips barely touching your forehead. If that throws you off, just relax your arms or fold them across your chest, and wait for your confidence and muscles to build. Now engage your abs, and slowly roll up, raising your shoulders to no more than a 45degree angle. Do not sit upright, or you'll lose all the

belly button back toward your spine. Then slowly lower back down to the starting position. There are many variations on the basic move. You can push the ball away from your feet as you roll up, and then draw your knees back toward your feet as you lower. You can also do a variety of upper body twists on the ball once you're in the semiupright position. To increase resistance and build more muscle, twist while holding a medicine ball The wider you spread your legs the easier it will be to balance. As your balance improves, you'll want to challenge yourself more by moving your feet closer together. Do as many crunches as you can, and then squeeze out one or two more. Remember: Quality always beats quantity. Keep your form, keep your focus, and keep breathing.

Why is it important to keep your core strong? I'm so glad you

asked. Your core muscles support your spine, maintain good posture and help you keep your balance. If your core is weak, over time, you're a doctor's visit waiting to happen. You wake up in the morning with twinges of back pain. You slouch, your tummy sags, you don't look as good as you would if your core muscles were trim, taut and ready for action. Wrinkle-Free
Wrinkles are depressing. Botox eliminates wrinkles. Ergo, Botox fights depression. That may be overstating things a bit, but perhaps not by much. In the first randomized, controlled study on the effect of botulinum toxin the basis of Botox researchers at the University of Basel in Switzerland report that depressive patients given a single dose (five injections) of Botox around the eyebrows experienced a 47 percent drop in symptoms of depression compared with a control group given placebo injections. The psychological improvement persisted for months. Botox, a neurotoxin, works by essentially paralyzing superficial muscles, softening and preventing well-worn wrinkles and frown lines in the face. The researchers speculate that it succeeds as an anti-depressive because it "interrupts feedback from the facial musculature to the brain, which may be involved in the development and maintenance of negative emotions." In other words, if you can't see your frown, maybe you don't feel your frown.

Savage: 401(k) Fee Disclosure Provides Much Information, Little Recourse

If you're one of the nearly 70 percent of plan participants who told an AARP survey that you didn't know your plan had any fees, this will be a wake-up call. It will help you decide on mutual fund investments within your plan, using costs as one input into your decision. And it will show you any additional fees that your plan imposes. ing expenses. Each fund is also required to have a website link on the chart, so you can check further into the plan's objectives, goals and portfolio turnover. You can also learn more about the fund managers. Clearly, having all this information disclosed will help plan participants make smarter choices if you are willing to take the time to look into these facts. While past performance doesn't guarantee future results, it is helpful to see how the funds have performed over time, how they compare to their benchmark indexes and how much you are paying to get this performance! And that's the huge issue still hovering over the 40l(k) industry. Employees have no control over the plan being offered or the investment choices within the plan. Even worse, they are stuck with the administrative costs of the plan and management costs of the individual fund choices within the plan. Many small companies offer 40l(k) plans that are administered by insurance companies. Typically their overall fees are higher, and the management fees charged by the funds they include may be way above average compared to those managed by fund companies like Fidelity, Vanguard, and T. Rowe Price. closures. The only way you could compare is to check with friends who work at other companies, asking about their level of fees. (Larger public companies typically have the lowest cost plans.) made in the plan offering. The DOL's Employee Benefit Security Administration oversees 512,000 40l(k) plans. It should stop patting itself on the back for requiring the new disclosures until it can use them to actually pressure employers to set up fairly priced retirement plans for their workers. And that's The Savage Truth. Terry Savage is the Chicago Sun-Times' nationally syndicated financial columnist and a registered investment adviser. please!

If you are one of the more than 72 million employees invested in, or eligible to join, your company 40l(k) plan, you'll be getting some very valuable information in the mail. It's the newly required 40l(k) fee and expense disclosure form, now being required by the Department of Labor's Employee Benefits Security Administration. Using this information wisely could make a huge difference in your retirement plan results. The DOL estimates that paying just 1 percent in additional (and unnecessary) fees each year could reduce your retirement plan balance by 28 percent over a long career. For example, someone who has $25, 000 in savings and receives an annual return of 7 percent, paying just 0.5 percent in fees, would have a retirement account worth

What to look for:

This annual statement will include a chart showing the performance of each of your plan options over four time periods: one year, five years and 10 years, and since the fund's inception. Most interesting, it will show the fund expenses in two ways: as a percent of assets and as a dollar amount per $1,000 invested. This may be a real eye-opener. If your plan includes an S&P 500 stock index fund, the expenses should be well under 0.5 percent. But a managed growth fund may have much higher expenses. It's up to you to decide whether it's worth the additional costs. Plus, if you don't know how well each fund is doing compared to its peers, (funds which may not be offered in your plan), you can also compare each fund's performance over time to its benchmark index. That will give you some perspective. Also, the chart reveals any extra expenses being charged to the account, such as service charges for low balances or for investment advice being offered within the plan. And you'll see the impact of accounting, legal and recordkeepPICTURE FOR ILLUSTRATION PURPOSES ONLY

If you notice that your retirement plan costs are hefty, what can you do? Heading
straight to the HR department to complain is NOT recommended. With such little job security these days, troublemakers can find themselves out of a job. But you know that already. That's where the Labor Department fell down on its job. It isn't publishing a database or benchmark of what most plans charge. Its website (www.dol.gov/ebsa) should collect and show that information. And it should provide a page where anonymous complaints can be registered against companies that provide plans with above-average fees and charges. If the DOL kept a database, they could easily check to see if the employee complaint is valid. And they could contact the employer, nicely "suggesting" that

The fatal flaw:

But while this latest educational missive from the Labor Department is a welcome and useful tool, there is one thing it does NOT do. It does not give employees any power or leverage to force the employer to switch to another, lower cost plan provider or to include lower cost funds.

By the way, what is "average" for plan costs? The Department of Labor said it is requiring disclosure of these costs, but it is not collecting the information from plan providers.
Therefore, there is no "benchmark" for 40l(k) fees and dis-

$227,000 in 35 years. But pay just an additional 1 percent in fees, with the same investment return, and your balance

at retirement would

be only $163,000!

Now that you understand the magnitude of the impact of fees on your 40l(k) plan, you might want to look at the disclosure statement a bit more carefully. Again, it should be arriving in the mail any day now and certainly before the end of the year.

LOVE AND ACCEPTANCE ARE VITAL TO BOOSTING SON'S SELF-ESTEEM

Q: I often hear about the importance of boosting
a child's self-esteem. But how can I accomplish that with my son without making him self-absorbed or self-centered? Jim: Instilling a sense of self-esteem in children is a critical task for parents. And you're right -- there's a big difference between healthy self-esteem and destructive selfishness. Like you, many moms and dads find themselves asking how to find the right balance. Dr. Kevin Leman, a frequent Focus on the Family broadcast guest, suggests that parents can cultivate healthy self-esteem in their kids by learning "the A-B-Cs." The letter A stands for acceptance. We might not always approve of our children's choices or behavior, but we always need to let them know that we love and accept them unconditionally. In other words, you can tell your son that playing video games for six hours a day is unacceptable. But don't give him the impression that he is therefore unacceptable. The letter B stands for belonging. We can give our kids a sense of belonging by creating a sense of community within the family. It's important that we give our sons and daughters a voice in family decisions when appropriate, that we listen to what they have to say, and that we Even when they make mistakes, they'll be gaining life experience that will boost their sense of self-worth in the long run. Acceptance, belonging, and confidence ... if we can instill these A-B-Cs in our kids' hearts and minds, we'll be setting them on the road to healthy self-esteem. ** Q: Every now and then, my 5-year-old daughter cries (usually when she doesn't get her way) and says things like, "Nobody loves me!" My family has a history of depression and I wonder if my daughter's behavior is normal, or if it is a sign that she is depressed. Juli: You are wise to be sensitive to signs of depression in your daughter. However, the behavior you are describing sounds like a normal 5-year-old reaction. Children are not as sophisticated in muting their feelings as we are as adults. That's why they are so much fun to be with! Within a 10-minute span, they can experience elation and devastation, feel love and hatred, and think you are both the best mom and the worst mom in the world. Even so, a 5-year-old can be depressed, and it's good to know what to look for. If your daughter were depressed, her feelings would be less situational. In other words, she would be down, expressing sad feelings even when good things are happening around her. You might also notice changes in appetite and sleep patterns. Depressed children sometimes withdraw, get panicky and lose interest in things they used to enjoy. If you consistently notice these symptoms in your daughter, seek help from a professional counselor or her pediatrician. You also want to be careful not to overreact when your daughter displays negative emotions throughout the normal course of daily life. If you go overboard with consolation and comfort when she makes statements like, "Nobody loves me!" you may reinforce that behavior. She needs a steady supply of love and affection from you, not just when she is showing negative emotion. ** (Jim Daly is president of Focus on the Family, host of the Focus on the Family radio program, and a husband and father of two. support them in their activities. Finally, the letter C stands for competence. We can give our children the gift of competence by allowing them to experience life firsthand. This means we need to avoid being overprotective. And we should fight the urge to do for our kids what they can do for themselves.

COOL-WEATHER CAUTIONS
Fall into the season by making sure your pets are ready for winter
By Gina Spadafori Universal Uclick Fall is my favorite season, and I think its my pets favorite, too. They all seem to perk up as the evenings get cooler and the days seem to gently warn of the colder days to come. I love walking the dogs as the leaves are turning along the river near our home, watching my little pack as they lift their noses to track the changes in the air. But even as Im enjoying the crispness and beauty of fall, Im aware that it means winter is around the corner, and with it, the seasonal challenges for our pets. As the days get shorter in the fall, dog walkers may be out in lower light than they were a few weeks earlier, making them less visible to vehicles. The danger is higher if your dog is a dark color, you wear dark clothes or you walk on a road without sidewalks. Take a page from the bicyclists book: Being seen is being safe. Check out reflective vests (for you and your dog), reflective leashes and collars, or other safety gear. The change in weather is more critical to outdoor pets. While I am not keen on the concept of outdoor pets these pets are often lonely and bored, and are often neighborhood nuisances as well I realize that people make their own decisions for many different reasons, and most do the best they can. If you have outdoor pets whom you cannot bring inside, the time to review your pets shelter is now. Animals must be able to get out of the elements. A pet must have a well-insulated structure just large enough so that he can curl up inside to maintain body heat. The structure should also have a windblock to protect it from wintry blasts. In the coldest parts of the country, it should also have some sort of outdoor-rated pet heating pad or other device. And be sure that theres always a supply of fresh, unfrozen water by using a heated bowl. Final cold weather caution for outdoor animals: Remember to thump on your cars hood on cold mornings. Your neighbors cat may be nestled against the engine for warmth, and thumping your cars hood will get the animal to skedaddle to safety. Indoor pets dont face the challenges outdoor pets do, but winter can be uncomfortable for them as well. For pets with arthritis, cold weather can be more painful, so ask your veterinarian about supplements or prescription medications that may help your pet feel better. A soft, heated bed may be much appreciated, too, especially by older pets. And remember that one of the best things you can do for a pet with joint problems is to keep the extra weight off: A pet whos more sedentary in winter needs to eat less. Every year, I get questions about sweaters for pets: Are they helpful or just plain silly? Some animals really can use the extra insulation of a well-fitted sweater: older pets and dogs who are tiny (such as Chihuahuas), or are shorthaired and naturally lean (such as greyhounds or whippets). Overcoats can save you time drying your dog if you walk in inclement weather, especially if your pets are longhaired. And dont forget to wipe your pets feet, legs and bellies after theyve been outside to keep them from ingesting any de-icing solutions. Because heating systems can dry out the air, you and your pets may be more comfortable if you introduce some humidity. Birds, especially those species originating in tropical climates, will enjoy extra opportunities for bathing or being misted. Cold-weather pet care is a matter of compassion and common sense. Use both in equal measure, and your pet will get through the worst of the season in fine shape.

Most pets enjoy the change to the cooler days of fall, but pet owners need to be sure all animals are ready for winter.

Q: I'm moving into my (second) husband's apartment and he's agreed to let me do some redecorating. The apartment is in an historic old building built in the Art Deco style. We plan to entertain a lot and I want to make it glamorous, even sexy, especially the dining room, but I can't find many glam dining rooms to inspire me.

echoed in the rug; the banquet seating that wraps one end of each table, balanced by pull-up chairs; her inspired use of color "that effectively functions as an architectural element by influencing the ways in which the room's tectonic properties are perceived." In other words, if you know how to harness the power of color, you can visually raise or lower a ceiling ... push walls back or bring them closer ... smooth out architectural eccentricities, such as niches and load-bearing beams ... energize or pacify the overall attitude of a room. Here's the key: dark colors "advance." That is, they make surfaces look closer to the eye. Light colors recede, so things look further away, ergo, more space. Matte (flat) finishes work much like dark colors, while glossy finishes act like mirrors, creating more space than what actually exists. Colors also have attitude: the warmer the hue (think sunshine-hot yellows, oranges, reds), the livelier the space. The cooler the colors (think ice blue and green, blue-white and frosted yellows and pinks), the more serene the scene. Back to the subject of glamorous decor: the last word may be the Swarovski fireplace (introduced by Napoleon Fireplaces & Grills, napoleonfireplaces.com). Available in

one- or two-sided versions, the limited edition comes with a bed of authentic precision-cut crystals that shoot "sparks" when you turn on the fireplace lights.

A: Then you haven't yet seen a new

book by designer Amanda Nisbet, aptly named "Dazzling Design (Stewart, Tabori & Chang, publishers)." Based in New York City, Amanda knows glamour ... Art Deco, too. Just seeing the Chrysler Building gleaming on the skyline is inspiration enough. The dining room we show here could inspire yours, with its deep, rich color scheme and high-gloss sparkle. Amanda custom-designed the black glass-and-brass dining tables a second mirror-image dining arrangement sits just out of the photo to the left, so there's ample room for eight swellegant dinner guests. There's also another pair of those vintage crystal light fixtures hanging from the ivory-painted ceiling she had lacquered high-gloss to bring "sparkle to an already-sexy room." More ideas to investigate: the dramatically scaled abstract art on the wall Set for sparkling dinner conversations: dining room goes glam with high-gloss finishes and crystal lighting.Photo: Roger Davis.

Q: I'm looking for something new in cabinets for my kitchen, which is contemporary. I am bored with stainless and don't want painted cabinets or do I? A: High-gloss painted cabinets, say in dove or charcoal gray, black or bright white, would be smart in an haute-contemporary kitchen.
New and even newer-looking: check out the textured high-pressure laminates about to be introduced by one top cabinetry company (woodmode.com). The surfaces are textured to look like real, raised wood grain, giving cabinets the look and feel of weathered wood that also promises to wear like iron. Vanguard Plastic Texture Laminates will be available in four natural-woodlook colors in December.

A: If I've said this once, I've said it a thousand times: think paint! It's magic in a can, the quickest and easier way to freshen and liven up any room in your house.

But there's more than one way to paint a room to make it young and bright again. In fact, there's more than one kind of paint the kind you roll or brush onto walls and cabinets, and the kind artists use to create charm and whimsy on other surfaces.

Recipe for a kitchen that's as titillating as it is utilitarian: antiques, oddments, and works of art in unexpected places. Photo: John Ellis The kitchen we show here sings a paean to the latter. We're in the Northern California home of Dena, the celebrated artist behind Dena Designs, the studio that creates designs on products, such as linens and fabrics and books that rake in some $4 million a year. This year, she's turned her hand to writing a new book, "The Painted Home by Dena," published just this month by Stewart, Tabori & Chang. From it, we borrowed this photo of Dena's kitchen to inspire your own. As you can see at a glance, it's a fun place to be, and half the fun is in discovering her accretions from a lifetime of flea markets and antiques gathering: the plates that march across the soffit, the vintage mirror behind the sink, that old crystal chandelier above it. Everything you see says, "Here lives an interesting and, yes, eccentric artist." The best news is that you don't need Dena's artistic talents to recapture the ambience in your own kitchen. Dena confides that she commissioned the paintings on the cabinet doors to another artist. "Landscape painting isn't my forte," she writes. "Inspired by English landscapes, I brought the interior panels, which pop out, to a local artist (who) painted them in the pastoral style of the reproductions I gave her." There. Talk about an easy recipe for brightening up your kitchen! ask. Decorator Sara Ruffin Costello, who writes a design column for the Wall Street Journal's weekender known as "OffDuty," said it's going to be all about saving money. You'll have to save it, you see, because you'll be spending bags of it to achieve the "Grand Dame" look she foresees: flora in extremis, window curtains that are swagged, layered and fringed all over, plenty of plush upholstery and "just a dollop of chintz...like a quick shot of vodka." As Sara laid out the future for design pros at last week's "What's New/What's Next" annual autumn event at the New York Design Center, we can also expect faded pink to be "the new color for living room walls." We can also expect natural woods honey-colored and warm to regain importance, sofa backs to curve,... Continues on page 10

No Kitchen (Should Be Without) An Island

By Rose Bennett Gilbert

Q: We really love our old house

(circa l891), but we're realizing that, more than a century later, maybe it's not the right place for three children, two dogs and lots of friends. We added a Great Room three years ago, and are planning a kitchen makeover (when the economy allows). My question is about the old butler's pantry charming, but we'd rather have room for a work island. Will taking the pantry out decrease the resale value of the house? Also, should the new island match the cabinets (dark cherry)? The floor is oak in a lighter finish. Confused by so many woods!

A: Houses are for living now, not for

re-selling whenever. And the more a house can be adapted to changing needs through the years, the better every family lives, and the more you will cherish your old home while you are its caretaker. In short, if you don't have a butler, you don't need a pantry for him. A center island works much better in many ways. Not only does it give the cook(s) more elbow room, an island organizes both the space in the kitchen and the family, friends and kibitzers who gather around it. Designer Jeannie Fulton (www.ulrichinc.com) didn't hesitate to rip out the "casually used" butler's pantry in the l898 traditional home we show here. "By removing the wall between these two rooms (kitchen and pantry), the cooking/eating area was expanded so that the cooks could always be in touch with both the family room and the eating area," she reports. In one well-placed stroke, she created "a kitchen that really works for today's energetic and busy lifestyle! "It is comfortable, warm, and inviting, in addition to having a great workflow and open space for socializing," she said. Much of the new room's appeal comes Many cooks and kibitzers won't spoil the broth in a l9th-century kitchen space expanded for 21st-century living. I was dazzled by an unexpected irony: "casual" furniture is mostly about the Great Outdoors, about living and relaxing in the bosom of Mother Nature. Yet here's the dichotomy livin' easy with nature in the summertime doesn't always come naturally; some of the most interesting new outdoor furniture of the 21st century owes a big debt to manmade technology. Take fire pits, for instance. A new obsession gaining momentum, fire pits come built into cocktail, dining and free-standing tables, fed by hidden propane tanks (like your barbecue) and ready to extend outdoor living well into the early winter months. But, in the midst of the chaos, six Americans manage to slip away and find refuge in the home of the Canadian ambassador. DONT MISS IT

The GustBuster

By T.J. TOMASI
ITS GOOD FOR YOUR GAME QUOTE OF THE WEEK

How to chip
The key to accurate chips is to chip like you putt, with no cocking of your wrists. The clubhead stays near the ground and the lower body remains still as the club is moved mostly by the arms and shoulders and a small chest rotation. Note how I retained the angle of my right wrist throughout the chip. This can only be accomplished when you keep your chest moving through impact. Although a chip has minimal flight time, youll need a setup that creates the descending motion necessary for producing loft. The chipping setup
Done correctly, the putting stroke is the most accurate motion in golf, so its a good idea to think of your chip as a putt. Once you know what club you need, adapt it so you can use your putting motion.

I said theres no second doubt, inside right, step up, make it. So very clear thoughts, which was nice.

Martin Kaymer, who made the winning putt in the Ryder Cup a tough 6footer.

encourages a descending motion and creates just enough loft to land the ball on the green so it runs to the hole.

Stance Width
The chip stroke requires no lower body motion, so your stance width is narrow to encourage an upper-body stroke. Since the stroke is so short, you dont have time for a weight transfer and you certainly dont need the power that it provides. Thus the watchword phrase is, quiet down below.

In chipping, you want to hit the ball with a descending blow, so place 80 percent of your weight on your front foot. Pull it back from the target line into an open position so your foot line points to the left of the target (to the right for left-handers) and allow your weight to settle naturally into your front hip. This distribution anchors your lower body and encourages your weight to start, stay and finish on your front side throughout your stroke.

Ball Position

Open Stance
Once youve set up correctly, your backswing is all shoulders and arms, without any conscious wrist action. Your shoulders control the stroke in both directions just as they do in the putting stroke. Throughout the chipping motion your lower body stays quiet, but not rigid. The watchwords here: quiet hands.

Position the ball toward the back of your stance with your hands canted forward, opposite the inside of your front thigh. By anchoring the weight on your front side you can easily produce the proper angle of attack, a naturally descending motion, without trying to hit down on the ball. Since the ball is well back in your stance, your GOLF SPOKEN HERE shoulders tend to be closed, making it all too easy to mis-aim the clubface. To counteract this common mistake, adjust your shoulders as part of your pre-shot routine so they are pointing parIf you know what allel to your line of roll.

Achieve then leave

youre doing, your practice is disciplined and focused. You set goals before you begin and when you are satisfied that you have reached them, you stop whether its takes 10 balls or 100. The rule is: Achieve, then leave.

The Stroke
On longer chip shots youll need some body turn so your arms can swing freely without bumping into your sides, but what movement there is should be reactive to the action of your arm swing.

To fight

Earnhardt talks about concussion, playing hurt

oncussions in the sports world have pretty much been a football story, until last week when NASCARs biggest star, Dale Earnhardt Jr., had to get out of his car. Earnhardts problems began with a violent wreck during a tire test at Kansas Speedway in August. But he kept it quiet until a seemingly minor impact on the last lap at Talladega Superspeedway triggered more symptoms and led to his seeking medical help for concussions suffered in both incidents. Missing Saturdays Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway pretty much ended any hope Earnhardt had of winning the Sprint Cup championship, but the driver and

those around him all said the most important thing at this point is the drivers health. And most around him were praising him for having the courage to come forward and admit he was suffering. Earnhardt, throughout his career, has been known for telling the truth no matter the consequences. I think thats one thing everybody admires about Dale is how honest and up front he is, Earnhardts car owner Rick Hendrick said in a press conference at Charlotte. He cares a lot about the team, his fans, and the sport in general. But when he knew that there was something not right, he went to see Dr. [Jerry] Petty, and I admire him. I think a lot of guys would try to play hurt, but

when the doctor tells you if you get hit again like right away, it could be catastrophic. Petty, who has worked for Dale Earnhardt Jr. (right) with team owner Rick Hendrick speaks to the media at Charlotte Motor Speedway on years with NASCAR and Thursday. New Toyota Camry Hybrid is much of the same but better

By Christopher A. Randazzo
Last year Toyota redesigned the Camry for the 2012 model year, and it should come as no surprise that it quickly made it to the top of the list of bestselling cars in America. We then got a second dose of the Camry when a few months later Toyota released the new Camry Hybrid. The 2012 seventh-generation Camry is a better, more stylish car than the one it replaces. The angular styling of the exterior makes it more pleasing to the eye while inside there is a big improvement in design and quality. The Camry Hybrid gets all these enhancements as well as advances to the Hybrid Synergy Drive System. The Hybrid Synergy Drive the heart of the Camry Hybrid consists of a 2.5 liter fourcylinder engine and an electric it is a complete package that works extremely well together and compromises practically nothing. Take the interior it is a fine place to be and the best one ever to be used in a Camry. There is more room, making it easier for all the passengers to get comfortable and settled in. And unlike the last model, nothing inside the new Camry looks cheap. Safety features include ten airbags throughout the cabin, anti-lock brakes, stability control, traction control and brake assist all part of Toyotas Star Safety System and standard on every Camry. And thanks to a smaller yet more powerful battery pack, trunk size in the Camry Hybrid is now more useful jumping from just 10 cubic feet to a useful 13 cubic feet. On the road, the Camry Hybrid drives and handles much like a normal 2012 Camry and is an improvement over hybrids of past. For first time hybrid drivers, it still takes some getting use to when the cabin gets eerily quiet as the gas engine completely shuts off as the car runs on just the electric motor. But other than that, the Camry Hybrid is a lot like its all-gas counterpart. Acceleration is impressive and the Camry Hybrid is surprisingly quick on its feet, By The Numbers: sometimes even feeling as if there is a V6 under the hood. Its actually quicker than the base four-cylinder Camry although not quite as quick as the V6 model. But best of all, transition between the gas engine and electric motor is no longer felt and is now really seamless. Even the regenerative brakes, which usually feel different in a hybrid, feel normal in the fuelsipping Camry. The rest of this hybrid is really all Camry, which is the best part. It seats five comfortably and delivers a smooth, noncompromising ride, making it perfect for long trips or as a daily driver. For on-lookers, their only clues that that the Camry is a hybrid are by the badges on the fenders and trunk and the front Toyota emblem its sits in a blue background rather than black, borrowing a design element from the Prius. One last thing that is new to the Camry Hybrid is its competition. Where it once stood alone in a class by itself, it now has to share the stage with the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid and the Ford Fusion Hybrid both respectable vehicles. But with Toyotas solid reputation and hybrid experience, its hard not to see the Camry Hybrid excel.

Tests set for repaved speedway

Sprint Cup drivers and teams will arrive at Kansas Speedway a day early this week. NASCAR is allowing an extra day of testing because the track has been repaved and slightly reconfigured since the last time the circuit raced there. Kasey Kahne said hes looking forward to the extra laps to fine tune his No. 5 Chevrolet. We dont get a lot of testing these days. So its nice to go to a race track that you race on, and have the tire that you are using, he said, adding that some of the knowledge gained could apply to other tracks the circuit races on this season. You can learn some things for Texas and Homestead, and maybe even a little bit of stuff for Phoenix. So, I think its a nice test for all the teams to just be a little bit better prepared throughout the rest of the season. His Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jimmie Johnson agreed that the test will be helpful for this week and for the future. I would imagine the Chase guys will really just be focused on this years stuff and what we need to do there, he said. Its nice to have data files, as we all know, for our simulations programs and 7-Post machines and all the stuff that we use back at the shop. So, thats good. I really feel more than anything, its just a safe move and it makes total sense to do it for our sport. He said that if there is a problem with the tires or the track, itll come out in time to make a fix before Sundays race. We all get acclimated with the new surface and re-design, he said. I guess there are some small little changes and things; and validate the tire and validate the track and get everything right so that when we show up Friday, we can put on the show that we need to.

motor that, combined, makes approximately 200 horsepower a 13 horsepower increase from the last Camry Hybrid. Not only does the new Camry Hybrid make more power than the old one, it also gets much better fuel economy. Whereas the previous model achieved 33 mpg in town and 35 mpg on the highway, the new Camry Hybrid gets 43 mpg in town and

39 mpg on the highway. If you choose the high-end XLE model, those figures drop a bit to 40/38 due to higher rolling resistance of its larger wheels and tires. Either way, the new Camry Hybrid will be able to pass by a lot of gas stations without stopping. But the Camry Hybrid isnt just about excellent fuel economy,

Smith drives Earnhardts No. 88

Dale Earnhardts concussion opened the door for Regan Smith, displaced from the No. 78 Furniture Row Chevrolet, to get in Earnhardts No. 88 Chevrolet, and Smith made the most of it while the car was running. He qualified a disappointing 26th, but was second fastest in the Happy Hour practice session. Then in the race he was steadily marching toward the front when a blown engine sent him to the garage at Lap 61. I think the important part is that we had a really fast race car, he said. We had a good first adjustment there, went just a little too far with it and got a little too free. Needed one more stop and I think we would have had it dialed in. Im looking forward to next week. We get three days to test when we get there to Kansas and we will see if we can get the AMP Energy/National Guard Chevrolet up front there. I feel confident we will have the same speed we had here. Smith had planned to drive James Finchs No. 51 Chevrolet at Charlotte, but his move to the No. 88 opened the door for A.J. Allmendinger to make his return to NASCAR after being suspended back in July for failing a drug test. He responded with a 24th-place run despite a late-race penalty on pit road. Hes expected to drive the car again this week at Kansas. Kurt Busch, who had been driving the No. 51, made his first start in the No. 78 Chevrolet that had been driven by Smith. He finished 21st.

The No. 88 Chevrolet driven by Regan Smith is pushed into the garage area during Saturdays Sprint Cup Series Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Smith stepped in to drive the No. 88 following driver Dale Earnhardt Jr.s concussion. (NASCAR photo)
As a competitive racer you always want to go out there and be a contender, but on the other hand when youre starting something new you need to focus on the big picture, and that big picture is to get primed and ready for the start of the 2013 season, Busch said. Finishing 21st might not appear that we made progress, but the fact of the matter is that we did in our first three days together at the track. But were also realistic, knowing that there will be more kinks along the way to work out in the final five races of the season.
