Department of Chemical Engineering 20/04/2012 Special project (Design of Process Plant) Registered students will be required to solve a problem

on design of a chemical plant of known capacity. The design will have to be submitted in the form of a s tandard typed report. Two students will work in a Group on different aspects of a project. Students are free to form their own Groups. The student will be assessed based on the progress made during the semester. Stu dents will make periodic presentations of their progress and progress will be ev aluated by faculty in the Department. Important Modalities 1. Students will submit a soft copy of their final report about 100-150 pag es to the Head of Department of Chemical Engineering routed through their Superv isor (Date to be decided by the faculty supervisor). 2. The project must be typed with the name of the student, the Title of the problem on the cover page. 3. Incomplete or careless work will not be accepted. The report must be fre e from typographical and grammatical mistakes. 4. Students are expected to use their judgment in sizing various units from first principles in case adequate data / info is not available. The supervisor is expected to guide the student, but the student has to finally defend his/her project. 5. Detailed process designing should be done for 1equipment. Detailed mecha nical design should be done for 1 equipment. The detailed design will have equip ment data sheet prepared for the same. For the rest of equipments a separate lis t is prepared with equipment identification number and Four Line specifications, a dequate enough to estimate cost. 6. The choice of the units should be SI wherever possible. 7. Use of software to do balances must be avoided to a maximum. The following Topics / aspects may be part of the final report: It is desired that the candidate should include following topics/aspects in this report; 1. Introduction 2. Executive Summary 3. Process Selection: Must include literature survey, competing processes in bri ef and justification for the chosen process. The selected process should be desc ribed in details. The process description should include the equipment number gi ven in the PFD. For exampleThe crude product is pumped from a day tank (V1001) to a feed pre heater (E1003) and then to the distillation column (D1001) 4. Site Selection: Justify the site location with points relevant to the site. 5 Process Design 5.1 Design basis: For a continuous plant 8000 hrs are considered in a year for production purpose. For example, Plant capacity 100,000 TPA mea ns 12.5 T / hr. For a batch process 300 days are considered in a year. A suitabl e basis should be chosen. 5.2 Material and Energy Balance: Material balances must show total and component input and output quantities. Properties for all the substances used in the En

ergy Balance must be presented in a tabular form. Energy conservation (ENCON) ph ilosophy should be adopted in the design 5.3 Process Design of Equipment Design basis be stated If computer programme is developed it should be included as an Annexure All calculations with formulae should be clearly exhibited. At the end nomenclat ure should be included Standard Engineering Practices be followed Selection of material of construction (MOC) with references should be included Process Design Data Sheet should be given 5.4 Detailed Design of an Equipment Detailed design should be as per standard engineering practices. Use Indian Stan dards, ASME or TEMA standards Various nozzles should be clearly identified with sizes. The equipment drawing showing elevation (sectional) and plan should be drawn. Al l nozzles should be shown properly. P & ID (Piping & Instrumentation Diagram) around this equipment should be shown separately) The rest of equipment should be listed separately with four line specifications.

5.5 Outside Battery Limit (OSBL) Facilities Utilities Storage: Any special storage requirement of the ware house. For example, tempera ture control, humidity control etc. Effluent treatment Plant: Present estimate of effluents generated. Suggest treat ment facility w.r.t. your project and the site. Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) : Salient features, not exceeding two pages be presented for major chemicals in the project as Annexure 5.6 Lay Out Plant Layout: Block or major equipment layout for the B/L Plant should be presen ted Project Layout: Block Layout w.r.t. project should be presented. 6.0 Project Economics Present estimates of Plant & Machinery Project cost Gross Cost of Production for 10 years Project Financing Estimate of working results Project Profitability (Viability) Analysis. 7.0 Conclusions 8.0 References 9.0 Drawings Process Flow Diagram (PFD)

Must include the equipment no. legend of description of each equipment no. At th e bottom present a table giving each stream number with component and material b alance with temperature and pressure. Process lines of the main flow must be bol d and utilities light. Piping & Instrumentation Diagram Only for the equipment whose detailed design has been performed Detailed Drawing of an Equipment you have designed totally

The equipment drawing showing elevation (sectional) and plan should be drawn. Al l nozzles should be shown properly. Industrial establishment must not be approached for getting any information rega rding design data or technology without the prior permission of the Supervisor. Evaluation will be mainly on the basis of: (i) Rational approach to the problem (ii) Accuracy, correctness and soundness of calculations and conclusions (iii) Clarity of presentation and perspectives (iv) Performance in the oral examination
