Pipe compost units in every house: joins hand with corporation

Main News 21 June 2012

By Anjaly C THE CORPORATION and City Journal plan to jointly launch pipe composting units in every home. Already, the civic body is installing pipe composting around 900 homes in the corporation. The authorities plan to go ahead with its resolution to set up 20,000 pipe compost units in the corporation limits with 90% government subsidies. Health standing committee chairman CS Sreenivasan talked with City Journal about pipe composting and future plans. Pipe composting Pipe composting is a simple household waste management device in the backyard of their houses. It requires only two pieces of PVC pipes, each with a length of 1.3m and a width of minimum 6inches. The pipes should be buried vertically in 30-cm-deep pits. An approximate of 2kg of waste is generated per day for a family including five members said Sreenivasan. Initially, 400ml cow-dung solution (or jaggery solution) should be poured into the pipe before putting degradable throwaways such as vegetable waste, fish waste, and leftover food items into the pipe on a daily basis. After two days, the solution should be poured into the pipe again so as to expedite the bacterial decomposition process, he added. Time and expenditure to set up a plant CS Sreenivasan said, Every person in the corporation can implement pipe composting within half an hour. The expenditure is only `100. This is the first time such a cost-effective system is being utilised for waste treatment. Government subsidy for waste composting

State government has issued an order to increase the subsidy for composting plants up to 90%. Every person will inform the health inspectors after installing a pipe compost unit and corporation will be paying the 90% of money. Those who are interested have to consult the health inspectors of their respective zones and the councillors will also support them. Instead of pipe composting, government will be giving 90% subsidy for every waste treatment system like biogas plants or any other technologies. Success story Around 65% of houses in Ollur, Vilvattom, Koorkkanchery and Ayyanthole zones have already installed the pipe composting units successfully, says Sreenivasan. He said that 13 divisions in the corporation have waste problems now. Corporation has already distributed pipe composting equipments to 400 houses and it will be extended to 20,000 families. What will do with plastic or other solid waste? Sreenivasan also said that the corporation will start 110 centres, two in each division in 55 divisions, for the centralised collection of nonorganic waste such as plastic, CFL and other glass wastes, wooden and e-wastes. A centre for recycling or recovery will be set up in Kuriyachira, near the existing biogas pant. A mother plant will be built in Lalur and primary solid waste management plants will be set up in Ollur, Ayyanthole, Mannuthy and some other places. What about the flats? Seventy five flats have already applied to avail different waste treatment technologies. They will set up different biogas plants or bio-bins for treatment of the waste generated in their flats including Thumburmuzhi model aerobic composting, Credai bio bins and different biogas plants.
