DENTAL SCALER

Lets make the Dentist Better

OBJECTIVE

To design a Dental Scaler that allows dentists to work more comfortably and efficiently while eliminating causes of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

Dental Hygentists use their scaler about half of the time. That is four hours a day.

DESIGN CAN HELP PEOPLE.

For most of us the mere thought of going to the dentist hurts. But it can be painful for them too. We tested prototypes to get real dentists opinions on how to fix the problem.

Different colored grips provide an identification system for dentists to help organize and distinguish one dentists tools from another.

SOLUTIONS

Anti Slip taper reduces slipping.

Connection and function: Different colored detachable grips help dentists identify their tools from others.

Ergonomic rubber grip reduces pinch force through soft rubber and ribbing.

11mm thick handle is easier to grasp reducing pinch force.

Sterilizable metal and rubber.

Final Model:

Simple paneling, tech color pop, and strong flowing lines.

A nose clip inspired a supportive heel clip to secure the foot.

Phase 2

Quick & initial ideations exploring a wide variety of silhouette and panel breaks. Also one piece vamp and quarter, and ankle padding in various thicknesses, and waffle cup design exploration.

Further ideation exploring Phase 3form, side stripe, and features as well as a heel clip.

FINAL DESIGN

FEATURES
Athletic Collar shape for midtop support and comfort. Vamp butt seam on medial side at the same line as the stitch on the lateral. side for symmetrical toe down and cost effectiveness.

Wrap around Vamp quarter for a seamless ollie area that provides durability.

Waffle Cup for support, board feel, and durability.

Heel clip for rigid structure to stabilize the foot, support the ankle, and increase the life of the shoe.

Inner heel lining and foam to secure the foot and provide more color blocking.

Knurled texture on the heel clip and toe bumper.

The side stripe is the most iconic symbol of Vans.

Family of form in the eyerow shape: the Euclid Shoe.

The Vamp shape is a nod back to the classic ERA shoe.

Foxing stripes are now a staple in skate shoe design.

Black suede vamp, quarter, and heel counter with canvas eyerow and collar. Red pop heel clip and a white leather side stripe.

Port Royale/Chilipepper two tone suedes and canvas. Tonal heel clip and pop red inner heel liner.

Navy suede vamp, quarter, heel counter, tongue, and eyerow matched with a cool grey canvas collar and black heel clip.

Pop Red foxing matched on the heel liner. Charcoal suede upper matched with a canvas dark grey collar.

Later Seasons Colorways: Production longevity with interesting color and material breakups.

Inspired by the form of a cyclist riding(photo below), the lower bar lunges forward while also being very instantly recognizable as the Specialized S. A unique frame, there is no mistaking this state of the art composite & aerodynamic machine as anything but a Specialized bicylce.

This is Alfred.
Dedicated to simplicity, he uses very carefully considered details to delight. From the church inspired structure underneath to the contrast of materials. Wooden dowels slide into alluminum hollow dowels capped with rubber feet. Bent alluminum tubes are welded on to form the leg stucture, while the seat and back are made of one piece of molded plastic.
