First Grade Comprehension Lesson Lesson 3

Standards: - RL 1.5: Explain the major differences between books that tell stories and books that give information, drawing on a wide reading of a range of text types - W 1.1: Write opinion pieces, in which they introduce the topic or name the book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply a reason for the opinion and pride some sense of closure. - W 1.2: Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the topic, and proved some sense of closure. Objectives: - I can identify the characters and setting of a story - I can use details I found in the story to describe the characters, setting, and major events - I can explain how fiction and nonfiction texts are different - I can express why I like a certain story- Completed in their writing piece - I can compare and contrast fiction and non-fiction stories These are objective that were completed as a whole group.

Resources/Materials: - City and Country, written by: Jenny Feely, photography by: Michael Curtain - Goldilocks and the Three Bears, retold by: Jenny Giles, illustrated by Pat Reynolds - White board - Dry erase markers - Picture of a bear in overalls - Picture of a city skyline - Writing paper - Pencils - Crayons Formative Assessment Information: (as needed/used for your lessons) - I am going to be collecting the students sentences. If their reasons of why they like that genre the best make sense and include 1 detail, I will know that they understand the differences between fiction and non fiction. - I will also be monitoring students actions and participation during the whole group discussions and lessons. I will be able to check off the students who participate and use correct terms.

I will also be going around during work time and asking the students questions about the lesson and see if they understood what was taught.

Procedural Steps: (including the teacher action/student action for the instructional strategies/learning tasks) Teacher: -I will draw a venn diagram on the board and ask the students if they know what we are going to be doing. (Anticipate answers of comparing two things) - I will then hold up City and Country and Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Then tell the students that we are going to be comparing these two books. -Why are we comparing these books? -Anticipate: fiction (fantasy) and non-fiction - If the students do not make the fiction and non-fiction connection then I will use questioning to help them and if that does not work then I will tell the students why we are comparing the two books. - As students are giving me ideas and words to write in the Venn diagram I will write them in the corresponding circles. - After completing the Venn diagram I will lead the students into a writing activity where the students will be choosing a city landscape or a bear with overalls to write about. - The students will have prompts - I like fantasy the most because_____________________. - I like non-fiction the most because_____________________. - I will tell the students that I would like them to write about why they like fantasy the most or why they like non-fiction the most. The students will have to have supporting details about why they like those specific genres. Students: - Students will be answering questions - Telling me what to add to which circle of the Venn diagram and why - Students will then be in charge of writing and opinion or informative piece about why they like fantasy the most or why they like non-fiction the most - The students will need to include supporting details of why they like that genre the most. Assessment: - Students will write about which genre they like the most; they need to include 1 detail that state why they like that genre the most. Students having 1 or more details will be proficient. Students with no details will need improvement. Writing needs to be clear and should be easy to read. (*In addition, be sure to note where you are providing differentiation within the lesson/s that you plan.)
