Brian Mitchell EDTECH 503 ID Project Introduction

My ID Project deals with a professional development session to introduce a group of teachers to the Prezi presentation website and walk them through creating a presentation that they can use in their own classes. Needs Assessment The needs assessment condition that this project falls into is Condition B: There is something new that learners need to learn. In this case it isnt the Prezi software in specific that they need to learn, but rather our faculty needs to learn new teaching technologies and how to incorporate them into their classroom. This is a goal that our administration has set forth. By teaching them Prezi, which is a technology that isnt a big psychological leap for them from Powerpoint, it is hoped that they will begin to see how many Web 2.0 tools are available and how much they can really enhance classroom teaching. As far as needs assessment, most of it has actually already been done. The administration has identified that there is a huge gap between student technology skills and those of our faculty. It is a goal to try to bring all faculty members up to speed on the many technology resources available to them. This is a first step in that effort. As far as identifying the specific needs of the group who will be taking this PD session, we will have to first wait and see who signs up for it, then assess the technology skills of that group of people before proceeding into some of the specifics of their needs and what will be covered. Learning Environment In this case, the learning environment will be a computer lab equipped with a SMART Technologies presentation system. This will enable the teacher to demonstrate the website and how to use it, while the learner follow along on their own computers. While our administration would like to eventually implement more online PD opportunities, the place where our faculty is now insists that we use a more traditional face to face approach. Learners As far as the learners, again the first step will be to assess the technology skills of those who sign up for the session. This will be done in the form of a survey with specific questions about their technology skills and how much they use technology in the classroom. The Prezi platform is such that it can be used in a very simple form or a much more complex application. Thus it lends itself well to a variety of skill

sets. After assessing the skills of the group of learners, we can then determine how deeply we can dive into the platform. Learning Goal The learners will be able to create a non-linear Prezi project to be used as a learning aid for a lesson of their choosing. The learning outcome for this goal is a learning enterprise. This is because the learners must follow a procedure for creating the presentation, but must also use their own creativity and intellectual skills to apply their particular subject matter to the presentation. Prerequisite Analysis 1. Select and organize a topic that is suitable for a non-linear presentation. a. Select a topic within your area of expertise that can be used to teach a lesson. b. Organize the topic into multiple categories, preferably with multiple levels and subgroups. c. Select multimedia (pictures, video, web links, etc.) to help present your lesson. d. Determine a visual structure for your presentation (i.e. circular, pyramid, etc.). 2. Create an Account on prezi.com. a. Select the student/teacher license option. b. Enter your personal information and create a username and password. 3. Watch the Prezi tutorial videos. a. Watch Lessons 1-3 in the basic section. b. Watch both videos in the advanced section. 4. Create your Prezi. a. Write down your main points anywhere on the canvas. b. Write down your subordinate points and make them smaller. c. Look for a pattern or relationship between the points to help you structure your Prezi. d. Rearrange and resize your points into a logical pattern. e. Add multimedia (pictures, video, etc.) to make your presentation more dynamic. f. Add color and frames to your presentation. 5. Use the tools in Prezi to lay out a path for your project to follow. 6. Export your Prezi and add narration, if desired. Learning Objectives 1. Using knowledge from within the learners area of expertise, they will select a complex topic in that subject area. 2. Given their selected topic, the learners will organize the topic and create an outline with multiple categories, levels, or subgroups. 3. Given a list of Creative Commons web resources, learners will select multimedia (pictures, video, web links, etc.) that help present their lesson.

4. Given some online Prezi examples, the learners will create a visual structure for their presentation. 5. After instruction on licensing options, learners will create an account on Prezi.com. 6. Given a list of tutorial videos on the Prezi site, learners will be introduced to and practice using the tools needed to create a presentation. 7. Using their subject outline, visual structure, and the Prezi site, learners will create a dynamic, informative, nonlinear presentation that incorporates several multimedia resources. 8. Based on the layout of their presentation and using the tools on the Prezi site, learners will construct a motion path for their presentations animation to follow. 9. After selecting a partner, learners will view and evaluate their partners presentation. 10. Given feedback from their partner, learners will revise their project into a final version. 11. After instruction on publishing their presentation, learners will export their finished project. 12. Given instruction and screen recording and a/v editing software, learners will add optional voiceover narration to their presentation.
