DRUGS & DOSAGE OF COMMONLY USED DRUGS

Anaesthetics:
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Propofol - 1% oil suspension IV Lignocaine Hydrochloride (Local anaesthetic) - 1-2% solution infiltrate the tissue Diazepam (Pre-op sedative) - 5mg IV injection Midazolam (Short-term Sedative) - 1mg/ml IV injection Morphine Sulphate - 10mg/ml IV injection

Analgesics, Antipyretics, NSAIDs:


1. Aspirin In MI Stat 325mg single tablet (along with Clopidogrel 300mg) Post-MI to prevent recurrence - 160mg/day regularly Post-Stroke to prevent recurrence - 160mg/day regularly To prevent MI in previously normal patients - 75mg/day regularly As a Pain killer - 300-900mg QD 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Diclofenac - 50mg tablets BD for 5-7 days (Max 150mg/day) Ibuprofen - 400mg tablets TDS for 5 days (only after meals) (Max 1800mg perday) Paracetamol - 500mg tablets TDS for 5-7 days (Max 4g per day) Tramadol - 50mg tablets TDS for 5 days (Max 400mg/day) Allopurinol - 100mg OD and then increase 100mg/week until the Uric acid level falls below 6mg/dl) 7. Colchicine - For Acute Gout Attack 2 tablets of 0.5mg followed by 1 tablet of 0.5mg in 1hr Course is of 3 days: 1st day 1mg (2tabs) then after 1 hr 0.5mg (1tab) 2nd and 3rd day NO TABS TO BE TAKEN If gout does not subside in 3 days then start new course only after completion of 3 days. Repeat the course again for 3 days.

Anti-allergics:
1. Cetrizine - 10mg OD for 3-5days in Cold, allergic bouts, etc 2. Chlorpheniramine Maleate (CPM) - 4mg TDS for 3-5 days (Max 24mg per day)

Anti-dotes:
1. Atropine Sulphate - 0.1mg/ml IV injection for Mushroom poisoning and Snake bite 2. Desferrioxamine Mesylate - 500mg IV injection for Iron overload 3. D- Penicillamine - 250mg Tablets TDS for Poisoning (Copper or Arsenic) 250mg Tablets OD for 1-2 months for RA 4. Flumazenil - 0.1mg/ml IV Injection for Benzodiazepine overdose 5. Naloxone - 0.4mg-2mg/ml 2-3 times repeat IV Injection for Opioid induced respiratory depression (Max 10mg given) 6. Pralidoxime - 30 mg/kg (typically 1-2 g), administered by intravenous therapy over 1530
minutes and repeat after 60 minutes.

Anti-Microbials:
1. Albendazole - 400mg Single tablet for deworming & filariasis 400mg BD with meals for Hydatid disease and Neurocysticercosis 2. Amoxicillin - 250mg or 500mg TDS for 5-7 days For Gonorrhea Single dose of 3g 3. Cefotaxime - 0.5g to 1g daily IM injection 4. Cefpodoxime - 200mg BD for 5 days for URTI or Skin infections 5. Azithromycin - 500mg on 1st day and then 250mg daily for 4 days 6. Ciprofloxacin - 500mg BD for days for UTI, Infectious Diarrhea, Skin infection 7. Co-trimoxazole - 960mg (160mg Trimethoprim+ 800mg Sulphamethoxazole) BD for 10-14 days in URTI, UTI, GIT infections and Pneumocystic pneumonia 8. Metronidazole - 400mg TDS for 5 days for all GIT infections 9. Fluconazole - 150-300mg once in a week for skin infections 150mg/day for 2 weeks in Vulvovaginal candidiasis 600mg/day for 2 weeks in severe systemic infection 10. Acyclovir - 200mg or 400mg tabs 5 times per day for 10 days for Genital or Oral Herpes 800mg tabs 5 times per day for 10 days for Herpes Zoster 11. Arte-ether - 150mg OD for 3 days for P.Falciparum 12. Chloroquine - 150mg base tablets 1st day- 4tabs followed by 2 tabs in 8hrs, 2nd day- 2 tabs, 3rd day- 2 tabs

Blood-related Medicines:
1. Cyanocobalamin - 1oo mcg/day for 6-7 days IM injection 2. Ferrous Sulphate - 300mg OD for 1-2 months for prophylaxis of FE def anemia 3. Folic acid - 5mg tab OD along with Ferrous sulphate

Cardiac and Anti-hypertensive:


1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Metoprolol - 50mg OD for Hypertension Enalapril - 5mg OD for HTN Atenolol - 50mg OD for HTN Isosorbide dinitrate emergency use - 5mg Sublingually repeat 3-4 times till removal of attack Furosemide - 40mg tabs BD for HTN or Heart failure or Edema

Gastric Medicine:
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Ranitidine - 150mg BD for 5-7 days Omeprazole - 40mg OD for 5-7 days Pantoprazole - 40mg OD for 5-7 days Metoclopramide/Domperidone - 10mg QD for controlling emesis Meftal SPAS (Dicyclomine 10mg+Mefenemic acid 250mg) - 1 tab TDS for Spasmodic pain relief and Dysmenorrhea

Anti-Diabetics:
1. Glibenclamide - 5mg BD Regularly for DM type 2 2. Metformin - 500mg BD regularly for DM type 2

Vitamins & Minerals:


1. Ascorbic Acid - 500mg tabs OD 2. Calcium carbonate - 500mg tabs OD 3. Pyridoxine - 50mg tabs OD

** Note that these are most commonly used medicines which are oftenly used in OPD or in Emergencies.
