DIPLOMA IN ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING (COMPUTER)

6.3.1 PROGRAMME OVERVIEW SYNOPSIS Diploma in Electronic Engineering (Computer) covers the broad discipline of electronic engineering, with specialization of electronics used in the field of computer based technology. The programme is designed with a broad-based electrical and electronic engineering foundation which includes mathematics, electrical and electronic fundamentals, computer fundamentals and programming, communication system fundamentals, semiconductor devices, wiring installation and computer aided design which provides versatility to the graduates, while emphasizing the area of specialisation towards the end of the programme. The specialization courses include software components such as visual programming and database system and also hardware components such as computer architecture and organization and computer system diagnosis and maintenance. Apart from the technical knowledge and skills, the programme also emphasizes on the development of the individual potential of students in an integrated and holistic manner through courses such as Islamic studies, moral studies, co-curriculum, softskills and entrepreneurship. 6.3.2 JOB PROSPECT This programme provides the knowledge and skills in electronic engineering with specialization in computer. The knowledge and skills that the students acquire from the programme will enable them to participate in the job market as: Computer Technician Electronic Technician Technical Specialist Electrical, Electronic and Computer Service Technician Assistant Engineer Marketing Executive Self-employed

6.3.3 PROGRAMME AIM Graduates of diploma in engineering programmes at Polytechnics will have knowledge, skills and attitude that will allow them to make tangible contributions and meet new technical challenges. They will possess entrepreneurial skills, practise good work ethics, be able to promote good morality and behaviour, and continuously enhance their knowledge and skills. The graduates will communicate and interact responsibly and be able to contribute effectively as a team member. They will also be adaptable to new changes at the work place.

1. Explain correctly the units associated with basic electrical quantities, concepts of electric circuit, and cells as the unit source of DC energy and the general features of batteries. 2. ET102 Electrical Wiring

ELECTRICAL WIRING exposes students to the aspects of wiring installations. Going through this course student will be able to relate the theoretical aspects in practical work on electrical wiring during workshops or laboratories sessions. 1. Implement clearly electrical safety in working environment and working practices related to NIOSH safety standard. 2. Handle efficiently basic electrical engineering equipment, electrical accessories and tools for wiring installation related to manual procedure. 3. Conduct properly single-phase domestic wiring, wiring inspection and testing according to MS IEC 60364. 4. Identify correctly the types of wiring protection according to MS IEC 60364. 5. Perform practical work as a team applying good work ethics and proper work procedures while complying with related electrical engineering practices and regulation within the stipulated time frame.

MEASUREMENT introduces students to the basic concept of electrical instrument and measurement. It covers the basic principles, safety precautions, meter calibration and use of instruments for measurement such as analogue meters, DC meters, electronic analogue meters, analogue and digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, signal generators and power meters. EE101 Measurement

ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS designed to provide students with the knowledge of electrical circuits. It emphasizes the principles of an alternating current AC waveform, complex number and sinusoidal steady-state circuit analysis. SEMICONDUCTOR DEVICES is an introduction to the basic electronic theories and devices. The course covers the fundamentals of electronic devices which includes diodes, bipolar junction transistors and field effect transistors. EE202 Digital Electronic

FUNDAMENTAL PROGRAMMING provides an introduction to programme design and development. A structured, multiphase programme development process featuring a series of steps involving understanding of a problem, formal programme definition, and programme specification through graphic design methodologies and pseudo coding is stressed. COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN provides knowledge and exposure on the usage of CAD software. The course focuses on the application of the software to produce drawings on graphics, electrical / electronic component symbols, circuit schematics and electrical wiring layout diagram. The skills acquired from this course will also equip students with the ability to learn and use other similar software

EE301 Electronic Circuits

COMPUTER NETWORK FUNDAMENTALS course introduces students to the concepts and principles of data transmission and computer networks. This course enables students to use correctly standard terminology in describing the main Local Area Network (LAN) topologies, hardware and software components used in networking. This course provides students with the knowledge and skills to build a network infrastructure using copper cabling, fiber optic cable, and wireless devices. 1. Prepare the hardware and network devices to build Local Area Network (LAN) for a specific implementation. 2. ELECTRONIC COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN covers the general introduction to the basic concept and fundamentals of electronic simulation and the applications of electronic packages for electronic circuit simulation at the circuit level and the logic level. COMPUTER ARCHITECTURE AND ORGANIZATION course introduces students to the concepts and principles of computer hardware operation and computers component logic design. EC303 Computer Architecture and Organization

MICROPROCESSOR FUNDAMENTAL covers the basic concepts and application of microprocessor-based systems. Students will learn the fundamental concepts and techniques for designing and programming microprocessor-based systems. Microprocessor architecture, assembly language and fundamentals of interfacing will be discussed during the course of study. COMMUNICATION SYSTEM FUNDAMENTALS introduces students to the basic concepts of communication system and to expand their knowledge regarding the elements involve in communication system. This course covers the principles of telecommunications, national network hierarchy, analog and digital modulation techniques. It also covers SDH, PDH, multiplexing and transmission medium. PROJECT 1 provides knowledge regarding the implementation and development methods of a project based on tools or software or a combination of tools and software. This course provides exposure to the selection and early planning of a project, techniques to develop project, application of computer aided design as well as methods of preparing and presenting project. 1. Conduct research in order to make improvements on a chosen project whether the project is on the hardware, software or hardware-software interfacing. 2. Plan project for the chosen category in the form of a Gantt Chart and implement the project steps within a stipulated time frame according to the chart. 3. Perform project construction procedures (hardware project) or identify the relevant software to be used in implementing the system programme (software project). 4. Use computer aided design package to produce simulation results and Printed Circuit Board (PCB) layout for the proposed project (hardware project) or produce flowchart and draft algorithm for system programme (software project) correctly. 5. EC501 Embedded System Application

EMBEDDED SYSTEM APPLICATIONS covers the basic concept and application of microcontroller system based on Peripheral Interface Controller (PIC) microcontroller. Students will learn software and hardware development on microcontroller development system and understand how to do interfacing with external devices using suitable internal peripheral. 1. Describe the basic architecture of microcontroller using block diagram based on PIC microcontroller. 2. Write program using assembly language and C language in relevant compiler to be successfully interface with external devices. 3. EC502 Visual Basic Programming

VISUAL BASIC PROGRAMMING introduces students to event-driven programming using Microsoft Visual Basic. This module covers designing an application in Windows environment, creating forms, compiling an application, interacting with databases, error checking and debugging, and testing of the application. 1. Apply knowledge of basic concepts of Visual Basic Programming to develop a stand alone application programmes. 2. OPERATING SYSTEM course introduces the fundamentals of operating systems. Topics included are inter-process communication, process scheduling, deadlock, memory management, virtual memory and file system. Formal principles are illustrated with examples and case studies of one or more contemporary operating system. The course shall enable students to develop skills to install and configure a server using Microsoft Windows network operating system and Open Source network operating System. EE601 Project 2

PROJECT 2 is the continuation of EE501 (Project 1) course. The course focuses on methods of circuit construction, testing, troubleshooting, debugging, repair and also completion of the project which was planned during the previous semester. This course also requires students to prepare a project report in a given format and deliver a project presentation at the end of the semester. CREDIT( S ) : 2 PREREQUISITE( S ) : EE501 PROJECT 1

1. Complete the project planning and project activities according to the Gantt chart started in Project 1 within a stipulated time frame. 2. Perform circuit testing, troubleshooting and repair based on electrical circuit fault finding and operation theory (hardware project) or test run, debug and execute system programme (software project). 3. Produce project prototype (hardware project) with suitable and attractive casing or system programme (software project) with user interface. 4. Write a final report in a given standard format with the necessary technical data referred to during project implementation. 5. Develop engagement in independent acquisition of new knowledge and skill and deliver an oral presentation individually or in group confidently inclusive of a final proposal report in a given standard format.

CMOS INTEGRATED CIRCUIT DESIGN course exposes the students to the basic principles of CMOS integrated circuit design, with comprehensive overview of the MOSFET transistor theory. Furthermore, the students will be equipped with the knowledge to design nucleus of digital design, the inverter, and designing simple to complex digital CMOS gates. 1. Explain the basic principles of integrated circuit design, design metrics, design methodology and design hierarchy of CMOS IC design. 2. DATABASE SYSTEM course offers a comprehensive coverage of basic concept and application of data manipulation. EC602 Computer System Diagnosis and Maintenance

COMPUTER SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS AND MAINTENANCE course provides knowledge on the general concept of computer system diagnosis and maintenance. Students are exposed to computer system hardware, laptop system, computer peripherals and security. 1. Explain clearly the fundamental components and security system of personal computer, laptop and computer peripherals. 2. Perform correctly installation, configuration, optimization and upgrade of the components on the motherboard and security system. 3. Perform correctly preventive maintenance on personal computer, laptop, computer peripherals and security system. 5. EJ501 Programmable Logic Controller (CLO) & Automation

PROGRAMMABLE LOGIC CONTROLLER (PLC) AND AUTOMATION provides knowledge regarding the concept and principle of automation system as well as PLC. This course emphasizes the relationship between relay ladder logic/hardwired and PLC, application of industrial sensors and actuators through the PLC, design process, programming and maintenance method. 1. Describe clearly blocks, parts and components found in the conventional and PLC systems. 2. Develop simple conventional ladder logic/hardwired automation system using automation devices and relate it with PLC ladder logic based on IEC1131 & NEMA standards. 3. IC FABRICATION AND PACKAGING TECHNOLOGY course exposes the students to the basic integrated circuit (IC) fabrication processes. IC testing, yield and reliability are also introduced to the students. 1. Apply basic concepts of multimedia to develop a multimedia interactive application using interactive application software. 2. Develop multimedia interactive presentation materials for technical field in a creative way based on the seven step procedures. 3. EE604 CMOS VLSI Layout Design

CMOS VLSI LAYOUT DESIGN course introduces the student to the design of CMOS VLSI layout. The contents include the knowledge of integrated circuit fabrication process, layout quality, hierarchy concept, auto place and route, electronic discharge, full chip integration and tape out. 1. Explain correctly fundamentals of digital CMOS VLSI design from the transistor up to the system level based on bottom up design methodology. 2. EMBEDDED ROBOTIC course presents the combination of mobile robots and embedded systems, from introductory to intermediate level. It is structured in three parts, dealing with embedded systems, mobile robot, and mobile robot applications. These parts are essential to students in mastering the crucial steps of building a complete working robotic system. 6.4.1 PROGRAMME OVERVIEW SYNOPSIS Diploma in Electrical Engineering programme is designed to cover the electrical engineering discipline with emphasis in the field of power generation and transmission.The broad-based electrical and electronics foundation of which includes electrical and electronic principles, computer fundamental and programming, semiconductor devices, wiring installation, power system and computer aided design provide versatility to the graduates. Towards the end of the programme, students would have been equipped with knowledge and skills of specialized courses such as power system protection, AC and DC motor control, power electronics and electrical maintenance. Apart from the technical knowledge and skills, the programme also emphasizes on the development of the individual potential of students in an integrated and holistic manner through courses such as Islamic studies, moral studies, co-curriculum, softskills and entrepreneurship.

6.4.2 JOB PROSPECT This programme provides the knowledge and skills in electrical engineering that can be applied to a broad range of careers in most power generation providers and manufacturing industries. Students will learn the fundamental concepts and techniques for designing and programming microprocessor-based systems. 6.5.1 PROGRAMME OVERVIEW SYNOPSIS Diploma in Electronic Engineering (Communication) covers broad discipline of electronics engineering, with specialization in communication technology. This programme is designed with a broad-based electrical and electronic engineering foundation which includes mathematics, electrical and electronic fundamentals, computer fundamentals and programming, communication system fundamentals, semiconductor devices, wiring installation and computer aided design which provides versatility to the graduates, while emphasizing the area of specialization towards the end of the program. The specialised courses include telephony, fiber optic communication, data communication, wireless communication and microwave devices. Apart from the technical knowledge and skills, the program also emphasizes on the development of the individual potential of students in an integrated and holistic manner through courses such as Islamic studies, moral studies, co-curriculum, softskills and entrepreneurship.

6.5.3 PROGRAMME AIM Graduates of diploma in engineering programmes at Polytechnics will have knowledge, skills and attitude that will allow them to make tangible contributions and meet new technical challenges. AA102 Pendidikan Moral 1

PENDIDIKAN MORAL 1 memberi pengetahuan tentang konsep asas moral. Kursus ini menekankan konsep dan teori moral serta peranan individu terhadap masyarakat dan negara. Kursus ini juga menerangkan elemen-elemen yang mencabar nilai moral di politeknik. KREDIT : 2 PRASYARAT : TIADA

1. Menerangkan dengan jelas kepentingan Pendidikan Moral dalam Falsafah Pendidikan Negara. 2. Membezakan dengan tepat konsep-konsep dan teori-teori asas moral supaya dapat diaplikasikan dalam kehidupan seharian. 3. Menjelaskan secara menyeluruh kebertanggungjawaban dan peranan individu terhadap masyarakat dan negara berdasarkan situasi yang diberi serta membentangkannya secara berkumpulan. 4. AA202 Pendidikan Moral 2

PENDIDIKAN MORAL 2 memberi pengetahuan tentang kesan kemajuan sains dan teknologi maklumat. Kursus ini menekankan tentang pembentukan moral dan etika, isu-isu moral semasa dan isuisu remaja. Kursus ini juga membincangkan etika keprofesionalisma dalam menghadapi pelbagai cabaran hidup. KREDIT : 2 PRASYARAT : TIADA

1. Menerangkan dengan jelas tentang kesan kemajuan sains dalam kehidupan manusia. 2. Menjelaskan secara terperinci kebaikan dan keburukan perkembangan teknologi maklumat supaya dapat dimanfaatkan dalam kehidupan seharian 3. Membentangkan dengan tepat isu-isu semasa yang melibatkan remaja dan dunia secara berkumpulan berdasarkan situasi yang diberi dan mencadangkan penyelesaiannya secara bertulis 4. Membincangkan dalam bentuk penulisan kepentingan kod etika keprofesionalisme bagi melahirkan tenaga kerja yang berintegriti 5. Menulis dengan jelas kesan budaya kerja negatif terhadap kerjaya individu dan kemajuan Negara bagi memastikan kestabilan Negara

AE101 Communicative English 1

COMMUNICATIVE ENGLISH 1 focuses on speaking skills to develop the ability to communicate effectively and confidently. It is designed to provide students with useful expressions that can be used in a wide variety of social interactions and situations. It also provides students with an opportunity to initiate and participate in group discussions. CREDIT(S) : 2 PREREQUISITE(S) : NONE

1. Use appropriate communication skills and registers for social interactions and discussions. 2. Listen to selected conversations/speeches and respond appropriately. 3. Apply dictionary skills correctly to check meanings,pronunciation and usage of words. 4. Pronounce words correctly based on phonetic symbols. 5. Read and respond appropriately to current issues/topics of interest. 6. Write and speak effectively in response to current issues/topics of interest. 7. Communicate to an audience confidently using effective delivery techniques, organizational strategies, graphics and visual support.

COMMUNICATIVE ENGLISH 2 emphasises the skills needed to describe products and services as well as processes and procedures. It focuses on the skills to give and respond to instructions. The course will also enable students to make and reply to enquiries and complaints in their future workplace. CREDIT(S) : 2 PREREQUISITE(S) : AE101 COMMUNICATIVE ENGLISH 1

1. Describe products and services clearly and confidently. 2. Describe processes and procedures using appropriate language devices. 3. Give clear instructions using the imperatives and respond to instructions appropriately. 4. Make and respond to enquiries using appropriate language. 5. Make and respond to different types of complaints using appropriate language. 6. Deliver an oral presentation on a product/ service or a process/ procedure using suitable visual aids.

AE301 Communicative English 2

COMMUNICATIVE ENGLISH 3 aims to develop critical reflection skills in the students. It also emphasises work-related communication skills. Students will learn the process of job hunting which includes job search strategies and awareness of workplace issues. The students will develop skills to introduce themselves, highlight their strengths and abilities, present ideas, express opinions and able to establish rapport and respond appropriately during interviews. CREDIT(S) : 2 PREREQUISITE(S) : AE301 COMMUNICATIVE ENGLISH 2

AE501 Communicative English 3

1. Present ideas and opinions in oral and written form. 2. Read and analyse job advertisements. 3. Make and reply to job enquiries. 4. Prepare resumes when applying for jobs. 5. Write cover letters to accompany resumes. 6. Respond to interview questions using appropriate language.
