11. Describe (give an account) the quarrel between Mr. Ralston & Mr. Chips.

What were the results of this quarrel? Describe one of the most interesting or exciting incident in Good-bye, Mr. Chips . How did Mr. Chips win over Mr. Ralston? Why Mr. Ralston did not like Mr. Chips? The quarrel between Ralston, the headmaster and Chips is a very important incident in the novel, It show how much Chips was sure of the correctness of his views and action. He was not ready to change his style of teaching on the order of any one. We come to know a lot about Chips character through this incident. Mr. Ralston came to serve as the head of Brookfield in 1900 after the death of Mr. Meldrum. He was a young man of thirty seven. He was a very strict as well as clever and active person. He was a very keen educationist. He liked to maintain discipline in the school. The boys as well as the teachers at Brookfield were afraid of Ralston. He was called live-wire . Mr. Chips, as we know, was not a modern man. He was not liked by Mr. Ralston for the same reason. Suddenly, one day in 1908, when Mr. Chips had got 60 years of age, he was called by Mr. Ralston in his office and he was completely surprised when Mr. Ralston asked if he had ever thought about getting retirement. Mr. Ralston told him that if he wanted to get retirement, the governors of the school would provide adequate pension for him. But he got angry and refused to even think about retirement. Ralston had many complaints against him which he openly placed before Mr. Chips. He told Mr. Chips that his methods of teaching were slack and old fashioned. He also criticized his careless habits and tattered gown at which everyone laughed in the school. He also said that chips spoke Latin words in the old style while other masters used the new pronunciation, according to Ralstons order. Chips replied that the old methods of teaching Latin were better than the new ones. Mr. Chips argued a great deal about the charges and in a way, did not accept them. Ralston told Chips that times were changing and the parents of the students demanded more than the teaching of dead languages (like Greek and Latin) Ralston also pointed out that the, results of Chips lower certificates class were very bad. Chips got furious and replied that examinations and certificates were of no use. He criticized Ralstons desire to have modern ways of teaching. He said that Ralston was trying to make Brookfield a money making factory and he (Ralston) was working only for the children of rich people. There was a small boy listening to this entire row outside the study of Headmaster. He talked to other boys. Therefore, the news spread like a fire in whole of the school that Mr. Ralston had insulted Mr. Chips. The other teachers and students began supporting Chips and Ralston was thought as a cruel Monster. Finally the management or the Board of Governors also supported Mr. Chips and said that Chips represented the old traditions of the school and he would continue his job until he had a desire to do so. Thus Mr. Chips stayed back and won over Mr. Ralston. Mr. Ralston then resigned from the Brookfield school and joined as a headmaster of another school. 12. Chips became the acting headmaster after the death of Chatteris but in 1918 he again fell seriously ill and resigned from his job. After retirement, Chips continued to live as a paying guest with Mrs. Wicket. There was only a road between the school and the house so he could see the school boys playing in the ground. He passed most of the time in remembering his wife and students. Chips kept his time by the school bell. He took tea in the morning, when the bell rang and had dinner when the bell sounded dinner. He also enjoyed listening to the roll call of the boys of Brookfield from the window of his room. In the afternoon, chips used to walk to the playground to watch the games, He enjoyed talking with the boys. He also attended the dinners and parties of school. As president of the old boys he attended their meetings in London and enjoyed them a lot. Chips was also preparing a new edition of the Brookfield Directory. Mr. Chips was a very gentle teacher. He loved the old boys as well as the new corners to the Brookfield school. He often invited the new boys as well as teachers and entertained them with tea and special cakes. He talked to them about his old students and made jokes. Mrs. Wickett took care of all his needs. Mr. Chips was passing a very easy and comfortable retired life. Mr. Chips had been a little wise man. Chips income was more than his needs. After his retirement, He gave a lot of his money to various school funds. In 1930 he made his well about his property. According to his well he wished that after his death his property should go to the mission to Mrs. Wickett and it also should be used for an entrance scholarship to the school. Mr. Chips had a small room which he used as a reading room or a kind of library. There he kept all his books of interest. In winter Chips took great care of himself. He was afraid of falling ill if he went out. So he stayed at home and enjoyed the reading books beside the fire. The books and the collection of various pictures which he used to look at them, gave him great pleasure. He enjoyed reading them so that he could re-live into his sweet past. Therefore, he spent his retired days of life in reading, talking, thinking and recollecting his past happy days while living at the rented room at the house of Mrs. Wickett. 13. He was liked by the students as well as he teachers of the Brookfield and was very popular among them for being a witty fellow. He was, a very intelligent fellow, especially after his marriage with Katherine Bridges, had become full of life and his eyes had gained sparkle. His intelligence worked always like a flash of lightening before the students and the teachers. His wit and humor had become so famous in the school that boys talked about Mr. Chips new and asked about it to one another. He began to make jokes while teaching & the students laughed & laughed. For instance, he made fun of marriages of low class to high class while teaching history. His jokes were usually of general kind and harmless. He could make his students laugh even in a Latin class in which one can hardly make fun. Chips behaved humbly while joking to others. He did not try to show his own importance. For instance, in his retirement speech he said that the captain of the school should not praise him so much. Then he said humorously that he had beaten the captains father an old student for changing a mark in an exercise. Chips humor was based upon affection & love.
