Miss Vacationland Scholarship Program Coming to Huron

By Lisa yako On Saturday, November 24, at 7:30 PM at the auditorium at McCormick Junior High, young women will have the opportunity to compete for the title of Miss Vacationland. The Miss Vacationland Scholarship Program has been in existence since 1962 when Sandusky native Jackie Mayer was crowned the first Miss Vacationland. Mayer went on to compete in the Miss Ohio competition, which she won in 1962, and then the Miss America competition, which she won in 1963. In addition to it being a life-changing experience, Mayer was able to earn enough scholarship money to pay for her final three years of college at Northwestern University. Though the Miss Vacationland Scholarship Program began in 1962, it was held for only another four to five years thereafter. However, the program returned four years ago when Mayer resurrected it. Today the Miss Vacationland Board of Directors diligently works to raise funds through generous donations and other events in order to award to scholarships to deserving young women. The Miss Vacationland competition is open to any woman who is between the ages of 17 and 24, and who is from Ohio or attends school here. The contestants are judged on a variety of topics including their talent, appearance in a swimsuit and an evening gown, how well they perform during an interview, and their passion and involvement in a platform or topic area. The platform can focus on any social, medical or other relevant topic about which the candidate is passionate and has shown involvement. Each contestant will receive a small scholarship ($75-100), and the winner will receive a $5,000 scholarship. The newly crowned Miss Vacationland will then have the opportunity to compete for additional scholarship money in the Miss Ohio contest. The Miss Vacationland Scholarship Program aids young women in a number of ways. In addition to receiving scholarship money, contestants will build their self-confidence and their interviewing skills. Both of these experiences can benefit the young woman in her future job searches. Mayer explained that her experiences helped develop me as a person, helped me to become more comfortable in my own body, and helped my confidence and everything I did. The deadline for applying for the Miss Vacationland Program is November 7. Applications can be found online at www.missvacationland.org or www.missohio.org. On Saturday, October 20, the Miss Vacationland

Jackie Mayer, Executive Director, and other Board members will be present to answer any questions.

November Gardens
Mary Strayer, MaSter Gardener, author, Lecturer The weather turned warm again, then cold again and many of us wonder how many more days we will have in the gardens. As I walked through my garden today, I thought of all the everlastings still in my garden, and decided to bring a bunch of cuttings into the house for holiday use. The following are some ideas which came to mind as I gathered my cuttings. First of all the alliums seed heads are still there and lovely. I cut the stems as long as possible, to give me flexibility later. Last year I painted 7 of them with silver paint to use in Christmas arrangements. You can use any color you want, but plan now, before the heavy snows ruin the plants totally. Fertile fronds of the ostrich fern are also still available. They are rusty brown, and look great in arrangements. Cut the stems long also. Remember to spray the fronds with hair spray or polyurethane to keep the seeds intact. Walk around the evergreens and the arborvitae to see where they can be trimmed for December holidays. I do not cut mine ahead of time; as they hold up better if cut fresh closer to the holidays. If you are using evergreens outside, cut and shaped into an arrangement, you may cut them as soon as the weather turns cold, and stays that way. They will hold up at least until you desire to change them. I have kept some, and added Valentines Day touches to them, and they were most appropriate. You may also notice the grasses have bloomed and their heads are ready to be clipped. First of all you do not have to trim your Miscanthus grass until March and can enjoy the movement of the plant all winter. It is especially beautiful with the snow and ice crystals on it. Again cut the stems and keep them in the garage until you want to use them. Sedum blooms are still in great shape most places, and hold up well in arrangements. Cut them and hang upside down to dry in the garage for use after a weeks time. Autumn Joy Sedum is especially lovely, and if you dont have it, consider adding it to your gardens next spring. My Echinacea or purple cone flower heads are a deep color now, almost black. Pick them, and you can use as they are, paint them any color you wish, including silver and gold, and enjoy them all winter. If the weather holds, consider crab apples on stems for your arrangements for Christmas. You can pick them ahead of time, but they dry down, and are not as lovely. A simple pot or vase with a cluster of stems would make a lovely table arrangement. Thanks for reading my column, and Happy Gardening!

Teaching Down The Generations

Many high school students aspire to be teachers after graduation. A group of students in EHOVEs Teacher Academy have found they can reach their goal through the training and experience theyll receive through the program. Whats brought them together was the spark that moved them toward education. That spark was their parents, who are all EHOVE employees. Teacher Academy teaches students how to be an educator for a variety of ages, as well as teaching techniques, classroom management skills and child development education. Although students are enrolled at EHOVE, this senior only program is actually held at BGSU Firelands. Brooke Stieber (Monroeville HS) started in EHOVES Early Childhood Education Program last year. I want to be a teacher, and taking the Teachers Academy Class through EHOVE at Firelands College, which will help me be more prepared for college, says Stieber. I heard a lot of good things about this program. I saw presentations about it and I liked what I saw. I went for it. Stieber took advantage of this opportunity to help her decide what she wants to do-Teach middle school, high school or early childhood education. Students meet everyday for the first six weeks of school. After this, they will meet on Mondays. They will then experience working in labs by teaching in the schools where they live. Students will learn how to make lesson plans, teach kids a different way to learn that works for them and learn about classroom management. Caitlyn Dickey (Vermilion HS) is excited to be in the Teachers Academy Class. I am excited to learn how to handle different situations, conflicts with students and learning how to teach, said Dickey. This class is a great idea to learn something more structured before going to college, and it looks great on your college application. Caitlyns parents both work at EHOVE and have been a great influence for her choice to explore working with kids. My parents pushed this program and thought it would be great for me because they know I enjoy working with kids, said Dickey. Tiffany Hammill (Perkins HS) is also a student in the Teachers Academy Class, and her dad is the instructor for the Diesel Program at EHOVE. I have family members that are teachers that have been a good influence in my choice to becoming a teacher, said Hammill. I teach the kids program at church and I just love working with kids. Mary Kate Bodkin (Edison HS) is also a student and her parents are both instructors at EHOVE. My parents are instructors at EHOVE, and I have been able to help volunteer with my mom at EHOVE during Summer Camp and Saturday Youth Enrichments Programs, said Bodkin. I love any opportunity to work with kids. Bodkin plans on working with special needs children in her future. EHOVE has been a big help for me. I went to EHOVE last year and was involved in SkillsUSA. EHOVE and SkillsUSA helped me to become much better at socializing with people.

Young Life In Huron
This past Wednesday (Oct. 10th) students from Huron High School gathered to have fun singing a few songs, playing some messy games, and talking about life. Young Life, a high school based outreach ministry, held their weekly get-together, called Club, in a giant plastic bubble, or what Young Life calls Clubble. Over 50 students poured into the Clubble Wednesday night at Enderle Farm to have one of the best nights of their year! Young Life Club, which is for Freshmen through Seniors, is held each Wednesday from 8-9:00 p.m. in the basement of a Huron students home. What is it about Young Life Club that makes it the best night of the week for thousands of kids all over the country and world? Young Life likes to think of it as a party with a purpose. Its controlled chaos thats almost impossible to describe, but kids know it when they see it. And before the party ends, a Young Life leader shares a simple message about Gods love for them. And thats what the celebration is all about. Young Life brings the good news of Jesus Christ into the lives of adolescents with an approach that is respectful of who kids are and hopeful about who they can be. Young Life in Huron has been active for over a year with volunteer leaders Andrew and Deedra Bejarano leading the way in starting up Club. In June they took 16 students to Young Lifes summer camp, Timber Wolf Lake in Michigan. In August, Firelands Young Life added a paid staff person to the team. Austin Neal, originally from the Cincinnati area, was hired by the Young Life organization and assigned to our community as the Young Life Firelands Area Director. Austins job is to maintain and grow the Young Life ministry in Huron, while also helping to start Young Life in other local schools in the Firelands area (Perkins, Berlin-Milan, Margaretta, Sandusky, etc.). On November 16th-18th the Young Life Firelands area will be hosting Young Lifes annual Fall Weekend at Kalahari. That weekend, hundreds of students from Northern Ohio and southern Michigan will have the best weekend of their lives right here in Sandusky! All high school students from the Firelands area are invited to join Huron students and the other 500+ students who will be there. If you have questions about Young Life, or want to find out more about what they do, what theyre about, and how to get involved, please visit www.younglife.org or email Austin Neal, Young Life Firelands Area Director, at austinleeneal@gmail.com. Huron City Schools Celebrate National School Bus Safety Week

The Huron City Schools Transportation Department and local law enforcement agencies will be celebrating the importance of National School Bus Safety Week. This years theme for the week long celebration is I see the driver. The driver sees me! The theme is a reminder to the students to use caution before crossing a street. The greatest risk to the student is when they are outside of the bus. Student injuries and fatalities occur as a result of motorists attempting to pass a stopped school bus with flashing red warning lights while students are loading or unloading. Nearly one million Ohio students ride on school buses each day and over 15,000 bus drivers are dedicated to providing safe transportation for children in the state of Ohio. National studies show school buses are the safest method for transporting young people up to 22 times safer than a passenger car, according to the Ohio Department of Education. The safety of the students as they are transported to and from school or a school related event is one of the highest priorities of Huron City Schools, stated Director of Transportation & Maintenance, Mr. Jim Blodgett. The Huron Transportation Staff take careful measures in providing a safe and secure means of transporting the Huron students daily, he continued. State law requires school bus drivers to follow certain procedures at every bus stop, therefore creating extra time on the roadways and adding congestion to heavily travelled areas. Drivers are encouraged to demonstrate patience and special care when traveling around school children. All students need to be aware of the School Bus Danger Zone. The Danger Zone is the area 10 feet around the school bus. The two most dangerous places near a school bus are at the front of the school bus and near the right rear tire area. Parents are encouraged to discuss the Danger Zone of the bus with their students and to be aware that not all motorists will stop for a stopped school bus. Students are reminded never to pick anything up that has fallen under the bus or to never leave sight of the bus driver. Parents are encouraged to take the time to check their students clothing and backpacks to ensure they are safe and free or drawstrings, key chains or objects that may get caught up on the bus. The school bus has several different warning lights on it to signal drivers. Alternating flashing yellow lights indicate a bus is stopping to load or unload students. Alternating flashing red lights means the bus is stopped and a stop arm simultaneously operates from the side of the bus. A white flashing strobe light is often used in rain, fog or low visibility situations. Four-way hazard lights are activated at railroad crossing and turn-around situations. Understanding the signals of a bus is important for all drivers as there are hefty penalties to pay when the rules are not obeyed. The Huron City Schools bus fleet is equipped with roadside cameras that capture images of oncoming cars when the stop sign is activated. In celebration of National School Bus Safety Week the students will be practicing Emergency Exits and local law enforcement agencies may be shadowing buses throughout the week. The District wishes to thank everyone for their efforts in helping to keep the Huron students safe.

Another volleyball regular season has finished and Coach Woods squad has again shown its mettle with a 19-3 overall record and going undefeated (14-0) in the Sandusky Bay Conference for yet another outright crown. The final week of the season saw Huron pick up two more 3-0 SBC wins over Port Clinton (Senior night) and Edison. The season finale was another tournament prep type match against perenial volleyball powerhouse Bishop Hartley from Columbus. The Lady Tigers won this contest 3-1 (25-21, 25-16, 22-25, and 31-29). While Kat Ferrell led the visitors with 15 kills, Huron again showed its balance with Hannah Cantrill and Megan McCarthy also reaching double figures. The Tigers served up an outstanding 10 aces including three a piece by seniors Sydney Grendow and Sydney Bragg. Grendow continued to shine with 41 assists, while Bragg led the defense with 23 digs. Next up is the Division III State tournament where Huron, who opted to take a bye, will play in Norwalk Saturday against the winner of the Gibsonburg and Fostoria showdown. The Lady Tigers are all about balance on this squad. There is a nice mix of experience (5 seniors) and youth. While Kat Ferrell led the attack, the next three hitting leaders on offense are two sophomores and a junior. Two juniors, Piper Miedema

and Megan McCarthy led the frontline in blocks. Meanwhile, the team has senior leadership through out the critical backline which could make all the difference when looking to go deep into the State Tourney. The team is ranked 8th in the state. Pat Shenigo has provided the leadership that has brought our businesses, community leaders, and citizens together in creating and retaining over 1000 jobs, giving Erie County one of the lowest unemployment rates in Ohio (Avg 5.4%, 2012)! We continue to build on the half billion dollar investment at NASA Plum Brook by working with our congressional leaders in Washington and aerospace companies around the world. Pat Shenigo has over 33 years of creating good paying jobs in Erie County. In these difficult economic times, he has managed to lower the county debt and made the tough decisions to reduce our expenses to match declining revenues. ALL WITHOUT REDUCING SERVICES OR RAISING TAXES. We now have the new tools in place that will help save lives, improve services, rebuild decaying neighborhoods and create jobs. These include the newly formed Regional Dispatch, Erie County Port Authority and the Erie County Land Bank. We have also established stronger relationships with surrounding counties for regional growth and economic development.
