A Publication for Students and Parents

Fall 2012

Principals Message
Dear Cougar Students and Parents,

ur Homecoming edition of Changing Tides is also a time to welcome all Cougars back for another amazing year of academics and extracurricular excellence. I cannot believe that we are already wrapping up the first quarter of the 2012-2013 school year! While school days are passing quickly and Back-toSchool Night and the Pumpkin Festival have come and gone, I finally have positive data results to share. Test scores became public on October 11th, and we have yet again made tremendous gains in our state testing scores and overall academic performance. Our API (Academic Performance Index) is up by 16 points (surpassing our target gain of 5 points) from a 781 to 797. We are still striving to surpass 800 and will no doubt cross that threshold this year. Our Socio-Economically Disadvantaged students made a 9 point gain, our White population gained 26 points, and our Hispanic students gained 15 points. After achieving dramatic increases over the past three years, the results of our English Learners surprisingly fell 16 points. Our staff is closely analyzing the test data and working together to address this area of concern. Our Similar School Rank (how we compare with respect to 100 other schools of similar population and demographics) reported one year after CST administration is now a 6. This unbelievable 2 point gain from the previous year demonstrates the hard work of staff and students. Our overall state rank remains a 7. Our Cougar scholars continue to show the state of California and the community that we can achieve at high levels. Check out all of the students who earned Grade Bumps in the C & I Corner. So, I am sure that you are wondering what else has happened on campus since August 27th. Besides gearing up for Homecoming week, the students helped make Back-to-School Night one of the best ever. The band, chorale, and the cheerleaders performed, and the Leadership students guided parents to classes as well as showed off the new and improved Student Store. The Future Farmers of America (FFA) hosted state officials. This only happens once every three years and was a great experience for all of the Agriculture students and school officers. Our first ever Web Design and Animation

courses hosted an Open House, and the Counseling Department put on an incredible College Night which included information about financial aid. ELAC (English Language Advisory Council) and the Puente Club collaborated to serve the annual Welcome Back dinner sponsored by the Ritz. PACs Long Branch fundraiser was a hit again with fabulous auction items, delicious barbeque and an incredible vibe. If you missed it, you can join the Cougar Boosters for the Black and Orange Ball fundraiser at Cetrella on November 3rd. Dodge ball is back thanks to Mr. Riordan and Mr. Barnes is working with a new improv group on campus. Our free tutoring center is open Monday-Thursday after school in the library. The MUSE, Yearbook, and The Paw Print (http://hmbpawprint.com/) are under construction while Monsters in the Sky, illustrated by students in Mrs. Evans Art II classes is already published. Pick up a hard or digital copy today! This is only the tip of the years iceberg so stay tuned for more. Also, for periodic updates, check out my blog at https://hmbhs.schoolloop. com/principals-message. To another great year. Go Cougars! Cheers, Ms. Silvestri Principal

Safety
HMBHS now has an anonymous Bully Reporting Box located in the Counseling hallway. Please feel confident to report bullying anonymously, or to your Counselor. Together, we can make HMBHS a better place as we stand united against bullying. The HMBHS Safety Committee has executed two drills this year a Lockdown and an Earthquake drill. Students are expected to follow specific instructions during drills so as to simulate our best response to a potential emergency. Staff and students have committed to the drills and increased efficiency greatly over the past few years. The Safety Committee meets regularly to review drill records, processes, and discuss other safety items such as bullying, hazards, etc. If you would like to be included in future meetings, please contact Mr. Dooley at your convenience.

Mr Anderson is a recent graduate from Chico State, with a degree in Kinesiology. Student Section: Homecoming Themes Announced

By Kathryn Nassar Homecoming themes were announced on September 7th at the Welcome Back Assembly. As Principal Silvestri began the standard welcome back message something seemed awry when a police officer briskly walked towards her, handed her a note, and stepped back. After reading the note, Silvestri said, A few students have gone missing this last period. No one is in trouble. We just want to know where they are. If you know where Melanie Lanier, Lorna Mata, Sarah Lococo, or Bridget True are please let us know. The lights went out and while a spotlight located each class president in the gym who stood up, ripped open her sweater, and revealed the emblem of her classs hero. Then all four ladies rushed to the center of the gym where the missing students had appeared, defeated their guards, and brought them back to their respective class sections. And so the race to win homecoming began. This years Homecoming theme is Superheroes. The Freshmen are Spiderman, the Sophomores are Superman, the Juniors are The Avengers, and the Seniors are Batman. As Homecoming approaches, each class is working to perfect their contribution to the Homecoming events through mural, skit, dance, sports tournaments, class project, and red carpet. Each task is further complicated as the classes must incorporate their theme into each project. We look forward to Homecoming Week. Especially the Football Game vs. Sacred Heart that follows our Assembly on that same day. Make sure you come out and support our school and our athletes on Friday, November 2nd. And students we encourage everyone to attend the Homecoming Dance in the MU immediately following the game. Please follow the homecoming scoring and Class of the Year points on the Activities webpage on School Loop. GO COUGARS!

A message from HMBHS Parent Advisory Council (PAC):

Welcome back to HMBHS! PAC has had a very busy and productive fall! Our 5th annual Western Fundraiser Night on October 5 was our most successful yet! Thank you for those of you who were able to support this very important fundraiser. Also, our New Leaf Grocery Store card program continues to grow and has already made $1,160.00 (since July 2012) this school year! We are very excited to announce that we have teamed with HMBHS Athletic Boosters (BAC) AGAIN to form the BACPAC Study Center. The HMBHS Library is now open from 3:15pm to 4:15pm, Monday through Thursday, and is staffed by some of our wonderful teachers and counselors to help with math tutoring, peer counseling, the college application process, etc. BAC and PAC are co-funding this great opportunity that is available to ALL HMBHS students. Please go to www.hmbhspac.com to see our updated website and learn more about PAC. Take a look at our calendar and see how you can get involved! We are looking for people to help with our various hospitality responsibilities including teacher luncheons. These are easy ways to help our school and meet some new friends at the same time! Please be sure to look at the Teacher Wish List on our website as well and consider donating specific items that our teachers need. PAC continues to build school community by funding academic and enrichment programs such as: Annual School Loop subscription for the entire student body Student Recognition Enrichment opportunities including field trips and guest speakers Scholarships for graduating seniors School Beautification Professional development for the faculty to enhance classroom experiences for students Hospitality for important events such as 9th Grade Orientation, Back To School Night, Teacher Appreciation Luncheons, College Night, Cougar Awards Night, Scholarship Night and Graduation The Cougar Scholastic Excellence Fund (CSEF) was founded and continues to exist for the sole purpose of helping HMBHS to fund a competitive selection of elective courses to prepare students for both college and career. CSEF has contributed more than $225,000 in four years resulting in

15 elective sections overall that otherwise would not have been available to HMBHS students. For the 2012/13 school year, CSEF funded the following sections: Chemistry (from 4 to 5 sections for schedule flexibility) Advanced Placement Physics (new course for 2012/13) Advanced English 10th grade (2 to 3 sections) This effort was achieved through the generosity of 75 Cougar families. These sections helped lower overall class size and alleviated many scheduling conflicts. We are asking that each family donate $500/child or more per year for the next two years. The more families that donate, the less the burden for all. If your budget wont allow for $500, please consider something less. Please help make the 2013 CSEF drive a success and donate!
