Color Scheme:
Fonts:
Mistral (through his Muses): I wanted to use a font similar to Picassos handwriting, and Mistral seemed to be the best fit. Rockwell: I wanted to use a readable but Sans serif font, just to make it seem more academic with authority, since that is the setting that I imagine most timelines to be in. Since Rockwell also reminded me of Norman Rockwell, another artist, I decided to use it. I like its curvature, where the fonts all seem very round but readable and fun.
Design Process:
I initially designed the poster vertically, from up to down. However, fitting the pictures into such a small vertical space was difficult, and I decided to change the art-board orientation to landscape. My main concern was the balance between horizontal and vertical lines. I already designed a horizontal header banner, and was going to do three more horizontal lines: one each for timeline, art period line, and the names of the women. To balance the horizontal lines, I created the vertical lines dividing the period that Picasso spent with each woman. The pictures then followed a natural vertical orientation. My second concern was using so many square and rectangular shapes. I couldnt help using them for all of Picassos works, but I wanted to avoid using it within my own design as much as possible. I decided to trace each of the womens photos by using the pen tool, and then added a film gradient filter to make them look more uniform. Finally, I decided to blend the colors together where two art periods overlapped, to convey that the two periods are not necessarily distinct from each other but that one flowed into another.
