Phrasal verbs: is a verb formed from two (or sometimes three) parts a verb and an adverb or preposition. These adverbs and prepositions are often called particles when they are used in a phrasal verb. Most phrasal verbs are formed from a small number of verbs (get, go, come) and a small number of particles (away, in, out, up, down...). They sometimes have meaning that you can easily guess (sit down, get up). However, in most cases their meaning ise quite different from the meanings of the verb they are formed from (ex. Look after). There are five main types of phrasal verb. 1. Intransitive: You have to slow down when driving near schools 2. Transitive (the object can come between the verb and participle or after the participle): Put your jacket on, its cold. Put on your jacket. However, if the object is a pronoun, it must usually come between the verb and the participle: put it on. 3. Transitive (the object must come between the verb and the participle): Her flaming red hair sets her apart from all the others in her class. 4. Transitive (the object must come after the participle): John takes after his mother. 5. Transitive (with two objects, one after the verb and one after the participle): They put their success down to good planning. Idiom: is an expression where the meaning is different from the meaning of the individual words. Many idioms are colloquial. A lot of idioms are formed using phrasal verbs. Examples: Tara is an intelligent girl who has both her feet firmly on the ground (to have your feet on the ground means to be sensible). Do you want to learn more about this topic?
