September 29-30, 2012 - Anglers Quest 2012 Sam Rayburn Saturday Series Championship is now in
the books, and the Saturday Series for Sam Rayburn is complete for 2012. The event began on Friday
evening with dinner & drinks at The Stump Bar & Grill with the presentation of the special Anglers of
the Year Goal Post to the 4 time in a row Anglers of the Year, Rusty Clark & Cory Rambo. They will
receive free paid entries to all A/Q Sam Rayburn Saturday Series events in 2013. The Side Pot Auction
followed and sold teams from $200 and up to raise $4,500 to add to the anglers pot.
The weather was cloudy, cool and raining on Saturday & Sunday, starting in the mid 60s at
daybreak to low 80s during the day with a light breeze for the event on Saturday and blustery 30 plus
mph winds on Sunday. The event got underway with the 28 qualifed teams taking off into the dim
morning light from their choice of launch ramps around the lake at 6:45 am. The anglers were all
going for the $13,190.00 purse that was the payback by Anglers Quest at this Championship event. The
water at Big Sam was at approximately 1 ft below normal pool level. At the end of day 1 the 28 teams
brought in 24 limits of bass, 127 fsh that totaled 352.00 lbs with a 2.77 avg. At the end of day 2 the 28
teams brought in 21 limits of bass, 108 fsh that totaled 264.91 lbs with a 2.62 avg.
After the 2 full days of competition the team of Brian Branum & Keith White from Sam Rayburn
did have the 1st place Big Bass of the event weighing in a fne 8.20 lber and collected $1,000 for that
one bite. They also brought in a total of 10 bass at 28.25 lbs to collect the 2 Martel Welding Works
Rhino Bed Liner $25.00 gift certifcates. The team of Rodney Owens from Ragley, LA & Scott Gill from
DeRidder, LA brought in 10 bass at 28.64 lbs to claim 6th place and $340.00. The team of John Packard
from Nacogdoches, TX & Josh Sowell from Shelbyville, TX came to the scales with 10 bass at 29.33 lbs
to give them a 5th place fnish and collected $825.00 for their portion of the purse and Side Pot.
The team of Johnny McKee & Charles Maclin ran to the north end of the lake to bring in a 10
bass limit at 29.50 lbs and claimed 4th place and $700. They did purchase their team in the Side Pot
auction for $200 and received another check for $450 giving them a $1,150 payday.
The 2012 Anglers of the Year Rusty Clark from Sam Rayburn, TX & Cory Rambo from Orange, TX
brought in 10 bass at 32.77 lbs to claim 3rd place and $800. Rusty & Cory did purchase their team
in the Side Pot auction for $200 and received an additional check for $675 making them a total of
$1,475. They always wish to thank their sponsors: West LTD, Ranger Boats, Yamaha, River 2 Sea,

The team of Charles Ford from Jasper, TX & Ron Risenhoover from Lufkin, TX ran Rons
Champion/Honda bass rig to the far north end of the lake around the 103 bridge and brought in
10 bass at 37.23 lbs to claim 2nd place and $1,600. Charles & Ron did purchase their team in the

The one man team of Clayton Boulware from Zavalla, TX took his Z8 Nitro/Mercury to north lake
areas around the Hwy 147 bridge to catch his 10 bass using his Falcon special H&H rods with Bass
Pro Shops pro qualifers carbon lite reels spooled with Bass Pro fuorocarbon and braided line. These
rods were tipped with Yellow Magics, Pradco football headed jigs and Texas rigged Yum Wooly Bullys.
Clayton came to the scales with 5 bass at 24.97 lbs on day 1 and 5 more on day 2 at 17.38 lbs to give
him the 1st place fnish at 42.35 lbs. Clayton did buy in the side pot for $200 and collected a total of
$5,275 for his day on the water.Good job!!.

Hogs How Many Million???
Hardly a day goes by that the feral hog invasion doesnt draw
media mention, but the math associated with many of the reports
has been mostly speculative until now, said a Texas A&M AgriLife
Extension Service expert.
Jared Timmons, AgriLife Extension Plum Creek Watershed Feral
Hog Education Program assistant in San Marcos, said the new
publication Feral Hog Population Growth, Density and Harvest
in Texas (SP-472), has solid numbers backed by research to
substantiate many of the claims made by those following the feral
hog invasion. The publication available for $1 per copy joins more
than a dozen other feral hog-related publications available at
http://agrilifebookstore.org .
Its pretty well accepted that feral hogs cause at least $52
million in agricultural losses each year in Texas, Timmons said.
But whats poorly understood are the pests population dynamics;
their survival, reproduction and density for example. The work
represented in this publication literally puts facts to fgures
when it comes to this invasive species that exhibits the highest
reproductive capability of any hoofed animal. That trait alone
makes population reduction diffcult.
The publication reports the number of feral hogs in the state
as between 1 million and 4 million. These estimates are not based
on scientifc fact, though increased reports of damage suggest the
statewide population is growing and expanding in range.
By examining a number of scientifc studies throughout the
southeastern U.S. and Texas, the publication authors were able to
create a statewide mathematical model of feral hog populations
using sex, age and reproductive characteristics.
The population model estimated an 18-21 percent annual
population growth with the current average statewide population
being 2.6 million head, Timmons said. Using these improved
population fgures, agencies and landowners can better
understand the scope of the feral hog problem in Texas.
Bottom-line, its not good. In order to hold our feral hog
population at its current level, the annual harvest rate needs to
be at least 66 percent for the next fve years or more. This alone
should be a major cause for concern since the estimated annual
harvest is currently only 29 percent.

14.Oct.2012 LUFKIN, Texas Phil Marks of Dallas, Texas, marked his spot in the FLW record books by
catching a 32-pound, 12-ounce sack on the fnal day of competition at the Walmart FLW Tour on Sam
Rayburn Reservoir presented by Mercury giving him a 16-pound, 5-ounce margin of victory, the third
largest in FLW Tour Open history. EverStart pro Randall Tharp of Gardendale, Ala., holds the current
record for largest margin of victory, 23-9, which he set at the 2012 season opener on Lake Okeechobee.
Marks fve-bass limit Sunday gave him a total weight of 82 pounds to win the tournament and
$125,000. The catch gave him the win in impressive fashion over Keith Combs of Huntington, Texas,
who caught a total of 20 bass weighing 65-11 and earned him $25,710.
Marks started the day with a mere 14-ounce lead over Combs, and he knew he needed a monster
bag to claim victory. He believed the tournament would be won offshore and knew the early-morning
bite was his most prolifc all week, so he was confdent all he needed was some wind and rain to turn
on his fsh, and Mother Nature obliged.
The old man had a couple of tricks left, said Marks. I knew the wind and rain would fre up my
bite, and it did. I had four or fve spots in a one-mile circle, and thats where all my fsh came from
today. I could see all the activity on my Lowrance unit, and this morning it was on fre.
I was fshing a pattern all week, Marks went on to say. I was targeting ditches with main-lake
fats, looking for subtle changes within the fats. During practice I discovered a high spot in the
middle of the drain, and yesterday I caught a 5- and 7-pounder in back-to-back casts. This morning I
caught four bass in 20 minutes in that same area.
I have had a couple of dream days like this in the past, but none of this magnitude. After I caught
my third fsh I knew I had about 20 pounds and thought I probably had a good chance of winning
and could relax a little. But then I started to think about it and realized that days like this just dont
come very often, so I kept fshing. I had what I weighed today by about 10 or 10:30 a.m.
My key baits this week have been the Strike King 6XD and a prototype Strike King 10XD. The
10XD has the frame design of the 5XD and is designed to give off a lot of rattle and displace a lot of
water. Its a big bait designed to catch big bass. Four of my 20 bass were caught with the 10XD. Today
I caught three bass on the Strike King crankbaits and two on the Strike King 1-ounce football (head)
jig. My 8-pounder came on the 10XD.
Marks referred to Sam Rayburn as a gem and said he has been fshing the lake for more than 20
years. Despite the high pressure the lake gets year after year, he said that his sack today was more
typical of what Rayburn is capable of giving up on a regular basis. He also added that the 10XD is
scheduled to be out in stores, including Walmart, in February.
Overall there were 49 bass weighing 138 pounds, 15 ounces caught by 10 pros Sunday. The catch
included nine fve-bass limits.
Clint Farris of Joshua, Texas, won the co-angler division and $25,000 Saturday with a three-day
total of 13 bass weighing 33 pounds, 15 ounces followed by Jeff Gengler of Fort Collins, Colo., in

Know how to be safe
before you go hunt
The slight chill in the air signals the beginning of fall, a season full of fun and activities. Its
football season and a relief from the blazing temperatures of summer. And fall also heralds the
beginning of hunting season, a favorite activity of many.
Hunting has developed over the years from a necessary skill using muskets and long rifes during
the times of the wagon trails and Spanish explorers into todays recreational activity using high-
powered rifes with technologically advanced scopes, night-vision cameras and camoufage hunting
gear. But for all these advances, we want to remind hunters they are handling dangerous weapons
that require a degree of safety and awareness to keep everyone safe.
Here is a quick summary of Ten Commandments of Shooting Safety from the Texas Parks and
Wildlife Department:
1. Always point the muzzle in a safe direction. Only point the gun at something you are ready and
willing to shoot -- never at another person. The safety should be on at all times, until you are
ready to make the shot. Also, always keep your fnger off the trigger.
2. Treat every frearm or bow with the same respect you would show a loaded gun or nocked
arrow. Do not handle a frearm or bow until you know how to check if it is loaded or not. Be
sure the chamber and magazine are empty and the action is open until ready fre. Always read
your weapons instruction manual.
3. Be sure of your target and what is in front of and beyond your target. You should also know
how far your bullets, arrows or pellets will fy if you miss. Never shoot at the top of a hill or
ridge, as you dont know whats on the other side.
4. Unload frearms and unstring conventional bows when not in use.
5. Handle the frearms, arrows and ammunition carefully. Dont climb trees, fences or ladders
with a loaded weapon. Get to your position, then load. Make sure you have the correct caliber
ammunition for your gun. Bring a feld cleaning kit.
6. Know your safe zone-of-fre and stick to it. Your safe zone-of-fre is that area or direction in
which you can safely fre. Know where your companions are and aim away from them. If in
doubt, dont take the shot. Always wear something daylight fuorescent orange so you can be
seen from a distance or in heavy cover.
7. Control your emotions when it comes to safety. If you lose control of your emotions you may
do something carelessly. You may be excited if you hit a target or upset if you miss, but always
remember to be safe, no matter what. Rehearse safe actions and keep control of your emotions.
8. Wear hearing and eye protection. Firearms are loud and can have a gradual or immediate effect
on a persons hearing. Glasses can protect your eyes from escaping gases, burnt powder and
other debris.
9. Dont drink alcohol or take drugs before or while handling frearms or bow and arrows. You
need to be in full control of yourself when handling these instruments. Drugs and alcohol
impair your physical and mental control.
10. Be aware of additional circumstances that require added caution or safety awareness. Follow
additional posted rules and know the laws concerning hunting and shooting. Know your
weapon, so you can identify when something is not functioning correctly.

Patriots Challenge Championship Won

The second annual Patriots Challenge
fshing championship was held on Sam
Rayburn Lake the last weekend in September
at Jackson Hill Marina. In spite of an all day
rain 23 of the 24 teams posted a limit of fve
fsh. Big fsh were a little harder to come by,
however, with Stan Burgay and Lance Hughes
coming in with a 4.80lb big bass to help
their overall winning total of 16.12lbs for the
day. Second place was won by Ryan Oneal
and David Shaw with a 14.50 lb sack and
third place was held down by Ed Harris and
Perry Curry with 13.69lbs. The fsh seemed
to bite most of the day with everything from
Carolina and Texas rigged baby brush hogs
to shallow running crank baits and spinner
baits producing the best action.
The Patriots Challenge weekend began
with a cookout on Friday afternoon with
volunteer cooks Larry Knighten and Sammy
Meche throwing down some authentic Cajun
food supplied by Wayne Hollier, Leak Sealers
Environmental and Southwest Beverage
Budweiser. Using a unique Cajun BBQ trailer
donated by Beverly Waite the boys laid out a
menu that included homemade boudain and
smoked sausage, rice dressing, barbecued
chicken and Ms. Connies chocolate cherry
trife.
The crowd was addressed by Roy James the
Texas State Director for the National Honor
and Remember Campaign, an organization
dedicated to establishing a new National
symbol of gratitude and respect for our
American service members who bravely
made the ultimate sacrifce, preserving the
freedoms we all enjoy. On hand were some
of our Wounded Warriors and Veterans who
have all served us well and to whom we are
so grateful.
The Patriots Challenge raises money for
Jackson Hills Outdoor Freedom Program
that has helped Terry and Connie Sympson to
sponsor over 400 hundred Military members,
Wounded Warriors and family members to
free stays, food and fshing trips at Jackson
Hill as well as making contributions to the
Wounded Warriors Association of East Texas
a 501 (c) (3) public charity a program of
the Jasper, Texas VFW Post 6380. Robert
Buck Collins, Special Forces retired,
and the President of the Wounded Warrior
Association was on hand to help host and fsh
in the event as well as picking up a generator

Fall is in full swing and water temperatures on my favorite
fshin hole have fallen as water levels have remained mostly
stable the past 3 months.
We did have a foot rise on the lake the last part of
September when some parts of the lake received 6 inches
of rain with a weather system as the lake rose to 169.4 feet.
In addition, there were reports of large mats of salvinia in
the northern part of the lake and some control spraying has
been done. At times heavy rains can cause a rapid rise in the
lake thus foating the mats of salvinia out where they can
be reached to spray/treat.
I recall when Toledo had its worst infestation of salvinia
several years ago as we had similar conditions with a huge
amount of rain in a short period of time. There were some
salvinia mats an acre or more in size that foated out of
the creeks to the main lake which made them accessible
for manual spraying. Hopefully, this will help to keep this
invasive, tropical plant in check as it is unlikely that we
will ever completely rid this plant from Toledo but we are
learning to control it.
THERMOCLINE IMPACTS FISHING
The cold fronts are giving me more fshing options as
cooler air temps are bringing water temps down basically
eliminating the thermocline. The thermocline forms in
June on most of the areas deep reservoirs and is a line
of demarcation where the oxygen-rich warmer water is
on top and the colder, low-oxygenated water is on the
bottom. During the summer it is diffcult for fsh to survive
below the thermocline which on Toledo and Rayburn
is normally around 25 ft. On my 998c Hummingbird SI
unit in Switchfre mode/max you can see evidence of the
thermocline as a horizontal thin feld of debris around 25.
In the fall with the arrival of several cold fronts, the
surface water is cooled and becomes heavier and sinks
to the bottom pushing the bottom layer of water off the
bottom where it mixes with the rest of the water volume
thus eliminating the thermocline. This process is commonly
called turn-over. The turnover has basically already
occured this fall as the beginning of this phenomenon
started in October.
Most of the time there will appear a brownish foam on the
surface and in certain conditions there can even be a distinct
odor which I would describe as a musty smell. With the
thermocline gone, there is now decent oxygen content all the
way to the bottom of the lake allowing bait and fsh to again
relate to the bottom no matter how deep. There are times
when we often fsh those deep areas (30-50 ft) from October
through early February with water temps determining when
we move shallow in the early spring.

When the Oilmen get together, it is a time for camaraderie and having fun, mixed in with a lot of
getting things done. For the past 16 years, the Rayburn Oilmens Classic has provided a venue for this
group of men and women associated with the oilfeld industry to get together for a great cause and
have a little fun in the process.
Among other organizations that the Rayburn Oilmen help fnancially is their primary benefactor
the St. Judes Childrens Research Hospital. They raise money through generous sponsors, raffes,
auctions and a team fshing tournament. Over the years, the Rayburn Oilmen have donated over
$500,000 to St. Judes. The mission statement of St. Judes says it all: The mission of St. Jude Childrens
Research Hospital is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases
through research and treatment. No child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a familys
ability to pay.
There are so many people and companies that come together to make this possible, stated
Rayburn Oilmens President Charlie Parks. Too many to name provided monetary and prize
donations, volunteered their time to work the event and more. Sun Coast Resources came in and

cooked wonderful meals for everyone for three days. Representatives from IB Services Vernon Green Sr
and Jim Farr helped to handle the weigh-in and traffc. HB Rental provided the offces and sponsored
the event. Special thanks to Mike Roper of HB Rental. Ships Marine and Phoenix Boats came in as a
sponsor and provided demo rides of the new Phoenix boats. The Stump Restaurant was open early
and provided breakfasts. Thanks to the folks at Bass Buster Inn for taking care of everyones stay
and Brian Branum here at the Umphrey Pavilion for working hard and helping us out. We would
also like to thank the people of Jasper for their hospitality every year we come. Wayne Davis provided
championship rods and thank you to Keith Lelux for providing on-site trolling motor repairs.
The fshing tournament is a two day event, winners determined by cumulative weights. The top 50
teams were awarded checks as well as the individual anglers who caught the fve biggest bass of the
tournament. Two scales were open concurrently to effciently register all of the fsh brought in and get
them released back into Sam Rayburn.
There were 320 participants in this team event and many limits were brought to the scales. John
Bowen and Josh Grantham took the lead on day one with 16 pounds even, followed by Jeffery Tate
and Kenneth Mire Jr having 14.33 lbs. John Walker and John Morgan were in 3rd with 14.02 lbs, then
Ricky Landry and Wayne Falcon in 4th with 13.73 lbs. Earl Harrington and Richard Bird wrapped up
the top fve with 13.01 lbs.
Many teams improved their daily creel on the fnal day and the leader board got all shook up. Carl
Kellogg and Jimmy Forsyth were in 6th place at the end of the frst day, but brought in a 16.45 lb sack
to lunge into the 1st place spot with a two day total of 28.83 lbs.
Ricky Landry and Wayne Falcon came up from 4th place on day one to a 2nd place fnish with
26.49 lbs.
David Matheny and Kenny Babin made the biggest move in the top fve coming up from 10th the
frst day to 3rd place in the fnal standings with 26.48 lbs.
4th place was won by Joe Bigler and Kevin Macumber, who were in 7th place on day one, with 25.87 lbs
Jeffery Tate and Kenneth Mire Jr, in 2nd on the frst day fnished 5th place overall with 25.27 lbs.
There were several nice kickers brought in over the course of two days. Don Schibi caught the
biggest bass of the tournament on day one weighing in at 6.74 lbs.
Once the scales were closed, and everyone had an opportunity to eat the great BBQ meal provided,
the festivities began with a prayer and the National Anthem. Directors were introduced, and sponsors
along with participants were thanked for their part in making the event successful. Drawings for
additional prizes that included rods, reels, Academy and Bass Pro gift certifcates were held.
While the participants take their fshing seriously, everyone who entered was already a winner
before they caught their frst fsh. This year the Rayburn Oilmen were able to donate another $30,000
to St. Judes Childrens Research Hospital.
Wed like to thank everyone who helps make this event a success for the kids, and glad we all have
a great time together in the process, stated Charlie Parks. Everyone mark your calendars for the

Weve moved
No longer is the smell of fresh donuts, Mexican food, hamburgers, or the seafood buffet wafting
into my nose (depending on which way the wind was blowing) while I write these articles. We have
moved out of our old location in town close to the intersection of Highways 96 and 190. The Wildlife
Division District 6 Field Offce is now located at what was the old fsh hatchery off of FM 1747. There
are some big plans for the area which will now be called the Pineywoods Outreach and Conservation
Center (POCC). Most of these plans revolve around outdoor education and bringing that education to
landowners, hunters, naturalists, and other interested in the outdoors.
The POCC is situated on 200 acres located at 289 County Road 98 (Fish Hatchery Road). To get there
from Jasper take Highway 63 West towards Lufkin approximately 7 miles to FM 1747. Take a left on FM
1747 (can only turn one direction) and follow about 1 mile until County Road 99. Turn Right onto
County Road 99. In about to miles County Road 99 will turn sharply to the left. Do not turn to the
left, but go straight instead. This will be County Road 98 and follow about 100 yards until the gate of
the POCC is reached.
The offce moving has many benefts. This gave district 6 a better layout for the offce building with
a reception area, a seating area, and a separate kitchen area that was lacking in the old offce. In
addition to the offce, there is plenty of storage space that allowed for the consolidation of equipment
into one area instead of being strung out across the district. Parking is much improved with a nice
gravel parking area.
The larger log cabin on the area that fsheries had used as their offce has become our conference
center. The main room has been set up to allow for larger meetings that seat around 25-30 people.
The building will eventually house a small museum about the area, kitchen, small meeting room,
library, and room for hands on activities.
The large red building next to the conference center will become an outdoor education building.
The building is large enough that it could be used for demonstrations and hands on activities that
could not be done in a smaller room or would be too messy. For instance, this building has water and
drain pipes spaced throughout the foor. This would allow for tanks or cages (cleaned, flled, etc)
housing live animals to be used in demonstrations.
The ponds that were used to grow fsh will now be managed as wetland units. These wetland
units will be fooded seasonally to promote habitat for animals such as ducks, wading birds, shore
birds, and turtles. In addition to fooding, these ponds will be subjected to management practices
such as prescribed fre, mowing, shallow disking, herbicide, and planting as needed to accomplish
management goals.
Open areas around the pond area will have demonstration plots established. These will be small
plots (2> acres) that demonstrate a particular type of management. Examples of management types
include native grass restoration, longleaf pine plantation, loblolly pine plantation, and hardwood
plantation.
The POCC has approximately 80 to 100 acres of wooded land. This will be managed as an example of
a mixed bottomland hardwood forest. Management of this area will entail such things as prescribed fre,
maintenance of natural openings, removal of invasive species, and proper timber harvest to name a few.
This area will no longer be managed as the manicured freshly mowed place that it once was,
but will be managed as a natural landscape. The Pineywoods Outreach and Conservation Center
we hope will become a place that can help foster outdoor learning and introduce new people to
nature. Currently the area is not open to the public, but hope to be soon. For more information call

Slam Dunk for Shook and Iles at
Bass N Bucks Toledo Championship

The Bass N Bucks Toledo Series wrapped up a two day championship at Cypress bend October
20-21, 2011. One place per seven teams entered were awarded in this championship with a $45,000
certifcate toward a Legend Alpha 191 Boat on the line for the 1st place team. Several 20 pound
class sacks were brought in over the course of two days, but Danny Iles and Brian Shook took the
feld by storm from the frst day and never looked back.
Gorgeous weather set the scene on Toledo Bend for 55 teams that scattered all over this massive
water body, launching from any ramp they chose to be closer to their coveted fshing areas. Mild
temps ranging from 60s to 80s and fairly gentle southerly winds under mostly sunny skies set the
scene for this two day event.
Jim Furr christened the scales the frst day fshing by himself with 13.41 lbs. From that point, as
the rest of the teams came to weigh, the tier of weights were all over the scale. Danny Iles and Brian
Shook brought in a massive bag of fsh locking in at 29.79 lbs. Their 7.03 lb kicker took the Big
Bass lead for a short while. Several nice bags in the upper teens were seen, then Andy and Malcolm
Williams brought in their sack, frst weighing in their kicker. It took over as biggest fsh of the
tournament weighing 9.59 lbs. Adding the rest of their creel the brothers were in a strong second
place position with 23.26 lbs going into day two.
The fnal day of competition brought with it a little more wind, a few more clouds, and temps
again ranging from 60s to 80 degrees. Among the frst to bring in their creel were day one leaders
Iles and Shook. Their fve bass limit weighed in at 24.63 lbs, which included a 6.44 lb kicker. This
gave them a two day total of 54.42 lbs, ultimately topping the rest of the feld by nearly 20 pounds.
We started each morning with 6th Sense crank baits in a shad pattern at main lake points
18-20 deep, the team explained. Each morning they procured two good bass that way, then a
few hours into the day headed to grassy areas, 14-15 using Strike King Hack Attack jigs. We had
a limit by around 10:30 each day, but caught our biggest ones around noon. They hit a lot of
different areas, but caught most of their fsh out of six different spots. We lost a lot of crank baits
in the deep timber, but we didnt lose any fsh. The team would like to thank Ranger, Mercury,
Carlsons Marine, Power Tackle Rods, Needmore Tackle, Costa Del Mar and 6th Sense Lures.
The father and son team of Jeff and Tyler Fisher brought in another strong sack weighing in
at 17.16 pounds, bringing them up in the rankings from fourth place on day one to a 2nd place
fnish with 35.16 lbs. Jeff said (This weekend) was a hoot! Any time you get to fsh with your son
is a great time. These two have been fshing tournaments together for a long time. Tyler fshed
his frst tournament with me when he was 9 years old. Weve been fshing Bass N Bucks together
since he was 11. Now hes 23. The frst day they fshed structure in 16-18 depths with a shaky
head. We got our limit and left them biting at 9:00 so we could save some for the fnal day. They

followed by a 24 pound sack resulting in a slam dunk Championship win.
This father and son team of Jeff and Tyler Fisher started out in
a good position, fourth place, on day one. Bringing in another
strong sack on day two they fnished in 2nd place overall.

headed to the south end of the lake to fsh grass and culled one time. The second day we stayed
on structure all day. When it got down to the last hour, we made a move and Tyler caught one on
a rattle trap, culling a three pounder for a four pounder. That made all the difference as there
was less than a pounds difference in 2nd thru 4th place! The team would like to thank Mercury,
Legend, Santone, Power Pole, Motor Guide and Humminbird for their support. I would also like to
thank my wife Nancy for always being there for us!
3rd place was won by Mike Cortelloni and Wendell Wright with a two day total of 34.66 lbs. We
had found some good fsh during practice on the south end in the grass, Cortelloni explained. The
areas were along main lake grass beds and creek areas in 14-18 of water. We used a 1 oz and a
oz Stanley Jig. The frst day the bite was off to a slow start. They started biting better around
11am, then it just stayed strong all day. They had 17.96 lbs the frst day, putting them in a strong
ffth place position coming into day two. (The bite) was slow again Sunday, but fnally got better
after 1:00. They were on solid 3-5 pound keepers. Adding another 16.70 lbs to their total weight,
the team fnished with 34.66 lbs and a 3rd place win. They would like to thank Stanley Jigs, Kistler
and their Helium and Z-Bone rods, Skeeter and Yamaha.
A few teams had some real nice kickers in their bags over the course of the weekend, but none
bigger than the 9.59 lbr caught by Malcolm Williams, fshing with his brother Andy on day one
of the tournament. It was about 1:00 in the afternoon, and we were fshing a creek about 12-16
deep. I had a 1 oz jig on and pitching in the grass. Suddenly, it just didnt feel right. I jerked the
rod to set the hook and thought I had a catfsh. It stayed down and ran hard. Andy thought it was
a Gasper Goo. There were a lot of trees and snags around us. It swam all up in them and never got
tangled. Thats just luck.
Ryan Pinkston and Scooter Clark were presented plaques for their achievements in both the
Bass N Bucks Toledo Spring AND Summer Series. They had the highest accumulated points for
each of those series earning Anglers of the Year status. Wed like to congratulate them for their
accomplishment against a feld of great anglers. Theyll be able to fsh both of those series in 2013
absolutely free! Bryan Davis, Tournament Director.
The season is not over for Bass N Bucks and Bud Light Trail anglers. All Bass N Bucks and BLT
championship qualifers have more championship opportunities. Next is at Ray Roberts October 28
for a 1st place purse of $10,000. The top 50% in each of the Region Championships qualify to fsh
the Grand Championship on Lake Texoma November 10-11. The winning team will receive TWO
Legend boats a $90k value!

Brothers Andy and Malcolm Williams had a strong start the frst day of the
tournament, weighing in 23.26 pounds which included the biggest bass weighed in
over the course of two days. Malcolm caught the 9.59 lb tournament Big Bass that
anchored the teams overall 6th place fnish

The D-Shad is a new breed of soft plastic jerk bait. It has a
streamlined body designed to give that side-to-side twitching
action, but the tail is thicker and heavier so when you kill the
bait it sinks level and gives a little shimmy.

November can be magnifcent here
on Sam Rayburn with some brisk cool
mornings on the lake. You have got to
love bundling up for an early morning
ride across the lake as the morning
sun is breaking. Then you pull up to
the frst cove and stand on the deck
looking at the steam rise off the water.
The frst cast of the day as your bait
sails through the cool crisp air toward
the still water, splashes down, and
ripples spread, creates its own kind
of memories. Memories are the most
important things we can hold onto in
life and we all need good ones. So get
out and enjoy yourself! There are lots
of days to enjoy the beauty that Sam
Rayburn offers as the trees begin to
dress for fall.
Lots of folks will be in the woods
and that means fewer boats on the
water. Dont let this time of year slip
by, get out and do some fshing.
The water temperature will be
dropping down into the 60s to low
70s and the fsh will be moving up
chasing shad to fatten up for winter.
Theres a lot of grass in the shallows
and it has been loaded with bait. The
pads have been holding a few fsh and
will start to hold more as they move
in for the bait.
Keep those fshing poles handy
because this can be some of the
best fshing time on the lake. Fewer
fshermen to compete with, more
fsh for you to catch. The fsh will
be moving around a lot looking for
a quick meal. Using a Stanley Ribbit
is a great way to cover the pads and
grass that is still hanging around
out there. A Stanley spinner bait is
another way to cover a lot of water.
For the ones that want to slow down
and enjoy the day pulling a Texas or
Carolina rig on the bottom, that will
pick up some fsh. If youre lucky you
may just hook into a trophy using this
technique. Some very large fsh are
caught from fall thru spring so get out
there and give it a whirl. For the folks
that want to get away and enjoy the
cool mornings and beautiful sunrises,
nows the time.
The Crappie will start to bunch
up and move up river slowly. Youll
fnd them moving a lot but should
still catch some nice fsh over the
brush piles and along the river edges.
Fish dont stop biting here on Big
Sam, the fshermen take a break.
The fshermen have to clean up the
Honey Do list so they can hit it
hard next spring. Its fun, cool, pretty
and darn nice here this time of year.
So what are you waiting on? This is
your invitation to the party. Dont sit
at home and miss out on the fun. We
have seen some fall trips fll the ice
chest as the fsh start to bunch up.
Everyone has loved the pontoon with
the shade and the changing room
with the port-o-potty. It makes the
trip a lot nicer for everyone. Get your
fall trip booked. We can handle up to
8 anglers.
Dont forget we have Gift
Certifcates for the loved ones that
have everything. They are good for a
year so they have time to get their trip
booked.
Ive never seen a fsherman that
cant tell everyone about their big
catch and what bait is hot. HOT
TIPS are generally free at the local
tackle stores.
All you guys that put up the fshing
poles and head to the woods, nows
a great time to get the boat down to
the shop and have a few things done.
Check the water pumps, plugs, fuel
flters, and have the lower unit fushed
and reflled. Have them winterize it
for you so its ready to go the frst time
you get a break. Dont wait till you
get out there, break something, need
some work done and then fnd a long
line at the repair shop.
Whether youre hunting or
fshing, its a great time to be in the
outdoors. Mike and I have had some
nice deer taken with customers so
far this year. Fishing has also been
very good this Fall.
Bass are moving into their late
fall patterns chasing shad before
winter. They can be caught on
fukes in shad color, rattle traps and
2.5 square bill crankbaits. Also old
style bombers that run about 4ft.
deep. Wacky worms and Texas rig
trick worms with a 1/16 oz weight
have also been producing some nice
bass. Secondary points are holding
bass where you can fnd pepper
grass and hydrilla. A few fsh can
still be caught on topwaters like the
yellow magic.
Crappie can be found in the brush
tops in about 25ft of water. They can
be caught on jigs
as well as shiners. We have had
several good days with customers
this fall.

2 of Us Championship

The 2 of Us Couples headed to Lake
Palestine for their 2012 Championship. We
had a total of 28 couples fish.
It was a beautiful start to a 2 day
tournament. Saturday we had a total of 80
fish caught with a weight of 177.44 lbs. First
place Saturday was David & Katy Ginn caught
5 fish with a weight of 18.21 lbs. Second Place
Saturday was David & Tina Bozarth caught
5 fish with a weight of 12.11 lbs. Third place
Saturday was Wayne & Marilyn Lilljedahl with
5 fish with a weight of 12.00 lbs. Ladies big
bass Saturday was caught by Kathy Timmons
with a weight of 4.71 lbs with a winning of
$150.00. Mens big bass was caught by David
Ginn with weight of 7.97 lbs with a winning
of $150.00.
Sunday we had a total of 70 fish caught
with a weight of 144.98 lbs. First place Sunday
was Marc & Kelly Mayo with 5 fish with a
weight of 13.86 lbs. Second was David & Molly
Atwell with 5 fish with a weight of 13.33 lbs.
Third place was David & Katy Ginn with 5 fish
with a weight of 11.86 lbs. Ladies Big Bass was
caught by Katy Ginn with a weight of 3.45 lbs
winning $150.00. Mens Big Bass was caught
by Joe Moore with a weight of 3.99 lbs winning
$150.00.
First place 2 day total was 30.07 lbs caught
by David & Katy Ginn winning $917.00 and
$615.00 Calcutta. Second place 2 day total was
21.88 lbs caught by David & Tina Bozarth with
a winning of $775.00 and Calcutta of $575.00.
Third place 2 day total was 21.64 caught by
David & Molly Atwell winning $642.00 and
Calcutta of $535.00. Overall Ladies big bass
was caught by Kathy Timmons with a weight
of 4.71 lbs and overall Mens big bass was
caught by David Ginn with a weight of 7.97
lbs. Smallest 5 fish Saturday stringer went to
David & Molly Atwell with a weight of 8.31
winning them $200.00. Random drawing for
Sunday was won by Jason & Lisa Bell winning
them $100.00. We had a total payout of
$3,572.00. Total Calcutta of $3,465.00.
Our John Smith award was given to Jesse &
Kathy Timmons.

had BIG success bow hunting already
this season.

a nice 8.58 lb bass caught on 10/6
using a top water chug bug. The fsh
was caught somewhere near Jackson
Hill Marina.
Savanna from Newton spent a great
day on the water with her dad and this
20 lb op was Savannas frst big catch
ever!! She made some great memories
this day and they also had nice fxings
for a fsh dinner.
Trophy Duck
Two Refugio County game wardens were checking teal hunters in the
northern part of the county when they came across one hunter in particular.
The hunter produced his bag and told one of the game wardens that he
had bagged the biggest teal duck he had ever seen. The warden advised
the hunter that the reason the duck was so big was because it was a
mottled duck. The hunter was fled for lack of hunter education course.

Fishing Glossary

This fshing business can be very confusing, especially the lingo that is used. Here are a few
defnitions for fshing terms that you may hear.
Fishing Hours of high ecstasy and deep depression caused entirely by whether the bass are
biting or not. This is usually followed by hours of boredom and depression at work until you can
get back on the water.
Bass An animal that grows the fastest between the time its caught and the time the fsherman
describes it to his friends.
Boat A hole in the water that you pour money into Accessories are small holes that you
pour money into that are connected to the boat.
Get em in the boat! .. Get em in the boat! Term used when you have a giant fsh on and
your partner is trying to net it
Oh No!!!!!!! Oh No!!!!!! Term used when partner knocks the giant bass off your hook
Creek Usually associated with a small stream but in East Texas and Louisiana it is pronounced
crick meaning the pain you get in your neck and back after a morning of tossing an Alabama-
rig.
Hot Stick Normally applied to someone in the boat that is really catching lots of bass but can
also be associated to a barefoot angler that steps on rods that have been basking in the 100-degree
sun for hours.
Jig - A lead-head poured around a hook and featuring a skirt of rubber, plastic, or hair. Also the
dance you do when you step bare footed on those hot fshing rods.
Newbie Angler that shows up at boat ramps with all new fshing tackle (some still having the
price tag hanging on them).
Row vs. Wade What you alternately do way up in a shallow creek when your boat motor wont
run.
Buzzing - Retrieving a lure, such as a spinnerbait fast to cause a noisy disturbance or can refer
to what take place when you accidentally snag a wasp nest and they all come in the boat after you.
Lots of Action - Measure of rod performance but can refer to what takes place in the boat when
wasp attack the anglers.
Dink What your partner calls most of the fsh you catch.
Outside Bend - The outside line of a creek channel or grass bed but can also refer to a trolling
motor that is bent under the boat by a submerged stump.
Stick-Up - Stationary structure that extends about 5 feet or less above the surface or a gas
station that is selling gas for $4+ per gallon.
Bag Limit - Restriction on the number of fsh that an angler may harvest in a day or how much
stuff your wife will let you buy at Bass Pro Shops.
Keeper - A bass that conforms to a specifc minimum length limit or a wife that will encourage
you to buy more fshing tackle and go fshing more often.
Lipless Crankbaits Usually what happens to your favorite deep diver when it hits a rock and
breaks off the lip.
Chugger - Topwater plug designed to make a splash when pulled sharply. Can also be a low
horsepower outboard motor that is running badly.
Clarity - Refers to the depth your fshing partner can see your chartreuse cap when you fall
overboard.
Controlled Drift Associated with using a paddle when your boat runs out of gas.
Crankbait - Typically, a $20 lipped lure that dives under the surface and gets hung up on some
type of snag or brushpile.
Drag Usually what happens to your boats skag if you dont raise it when pulling the boat up
the ramp.
Feeding Times - Certain times of the day when fsh are most active usually in China.
Flipping - The technique of placing a lure in a given spot precisely or what happens to you
when your boat hits a partially submerged stump and you are tossed out into the lake.
Inactive Fish - Bass that are in a non-feeding mood. This usually happens from Friday
afternoon until Sunday night.
Point - A fnger of land jutting into the water or what other folks do to you when you launch
your boat without the plug in.
Tail Hooked Bass that slaps at a lure and gets hooked in the tail. Can also refer to an angler
that sits down on a lure with treble hooks.

SRA of Texas has
been busy spraying the
Salvania that busted
loose from the heavy
rains we had in October.
When we have a gully
washer, the fast fowing
water will actually push the Salvania out of the
shallows in the backs of the coves clearing out those
areas that are unreachable or diffcult to get to by
boat. The Salvania will be pushed into the main lake
bunching up in big blankets where SRA can then
spray.
November is my favorite month of the year to be
on my favorite fshing pond. Typically you have cool
mornings, warm afternoons, and spectacular vistas of
the lake. You never know what Mother Nature may
have in store for you this time of year. So, besides your
fshing pole, dont forget to bring your camera.
November is one of the most productive fshing
months of the year. The Black and White bass will
be feeding heavy in anticipation of winter, and the
Crappie here on the north end of the lake will be
moving to the river channel ledges ganging up on
natural and man made cover. Its fshing time on
Toledo Bend, and if you like to catch fsh, November is
a great time to be on the water.
As the water temperature starts to drop, the shad
will start moving into the coves and the bass will
follow. Watch for schooling activity and keep a top
water plug, spinner bait, buzz bait, trap or shallow
running crank bait handy. For bigger fsh throw a
worm, jig, spoon or tail spinner under the schooling
bass. Finesse plastics (Trick Worms, Flukes, and
Senkos) fshed along shallow grass lines close to deep
water will also be very productive. Areas to concentrate
are main lake points, river channel shelf and ledges,
the mouth of the major creeks and coves, and creek
shelf and ledges.
The White bass will be on a rampage on the north
end sandbars. Slab spoons, tail spinners, Rat-L-Traps
and crank baits will all be productive. Watch for
schooling activity and keep a lipless crank bait and
top water plug handy.
Whether you call them Crappie, sac-au-lait, White
Perch or paper mouths, anglers from all over the
country will be heading to The Bend to pursue our
world famous fall/winter Crappie season. The fsh will
gang up on the ledges of the old river channel around
natural and planted brush piles. Jigs and shiners
vertically fshed over cover are the ticket.
FISHING REPORTS/
BASS: Multiple patterns
are still in place but it
seems we are fnding
the bass somewhat
more concentrated.
Spinnerbaits plus also weightless soft plastics should
get some attention over the grass in 2 to 16 feet.
Also, in the grass, work a 1/4 oz. as well as 3/8
oz Stanley Vibra-Wedge spinnerbait with double
willow leaf blades. I prefer one of the two blades
to be gold/copper and the other silver/nickel.
There is a new series from Stanley called the Vibra
Shaft Painted Blade Series and we have had good
success with it. The series has matching paint on
both the blades/lure/skirt. You may also want to try
the LSU color which is my personal favorite of the
new series. The offcial code color of the LSU color
is actually called Royal Purple. Both Toledo and
Rayburns seem to like it plus the 3/8 oz. version
is not a big bait and should work great in some of
our local rivers. Topwater patterns are also working
with Pro Pop (Norman), Chug Bug and Yellow
Magic all catching bass in shad colors, bone and
black and silver. All of these three baits have one
thing in common.......a teaser tail.... which in my
book is a must.
A Texas rig continues to be one of the most
consistent producers with Berkley Havocs Bottom
Hopper, Rocket Craw and Trick Worm being our top
soft plastics. I am very particular when it comes to
rigging the Texas rig currently as we are using 15
and 17 lb test Berkley Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon,
a light sinker from 1/8 to 1/4 oz depending on
conditions. We are also using a Daiichi 2/0 or 3/0
Offset Worm Hook with these soft plastics. The
water we are fshing is ultra clear, so a small profle
hook hardware seems to get me more bites and the
high carbon Daiichi hooks are thin, yet strong and
ultra sharp.
On windy days we are throwing DD22s (deep
crankbaits) as there are a lot of bass suspended and
the DD22s can cover a lot of area. Yes, we continue
to use a drop shot and jigging spoon with Havoc
Bottom Hopper Jr (4.75 inch) our only drop shot
worm.
CRAPPIE/YELLOW AND WHITE BASS: Some of
the crappie are starting to move to main creeks
channels as well as deeper points. We have started
to catch a few on spoons as we are fshing for bass
as a lot of the shad are moving deeper. Yellow and
white bass are also moving deeper following the
shad and have been hitting spoons and tailspinners
such as Knock Off (Norman) and Little George.

If a person was affected by the Newton Moore Branch fre
in 2000, the recent fres in Jasper County or was in awe of the
devastation of the Bastrop fre of 2011, then time is of the essence
to become FIREWISE.
What is Firewise? Firewise is being aware of the dangers posed
by wildfres and doing all that can be done to prevent wildfre from
occurring in this area.
While attending a Firewise school the question what is
Firewise was posed time and time again. Texas Parks and
Wildlife people explained the need to overhaul the landscape
around homes to make them more fre resistant.
Firewise landscaping includes green lawns and plants that are less
combustible; using hardscaping (rocks, gravel and paving) close to
the house; and cleanup of wildfre fuel from around the house.
Things to do to rid the home of fre hazardous conditions:
Step back from the home and observe common fre hazards that
occur within 10 feet of the home. Are there gasoline cans stored
near the house? Gas cans and equipment should be stored away
from the house Never should they be stored under the porch.
Fireplace wood should never be stored on the back porch. It
may be convenient to step out the back door and pick up a log, but
frewood should be stored away from the house under a separate
shed or cover.
Create a fre-free area within fve feet of the home, using
non-fammable landscaping materials such as rocks, pavers
and/or high-moisture content annuals and perennials. There is
much to be said of the old timers who kept clean yards by hoeing
off any plants and religiously sweeping their yards to get rid of any
fre sustaining debris
Trees that are close to the house should be pruned to a height of
10 feet above the ground. This prevents the ladder effect, where
lower branches provide a ladder for fre to climb up the house to
the eaves.
Clean fuel (leaves, pine straw and pine cones) off the roof, out
of the gutters and away from the foundation of the house. Never
should pine straw be used as mulch around the house.
Enclose decks and eave vents. Openings allow embers to fy in,
smolder and ignite.
Consider doing control burning around your home. While there
are some stringent guidelines for this practice, burning is one of
the ways to rid East Texas of fuel that feeds wildfres.
The Firewise initiative has become country wide. The website
www.frewise.org has much information to help the homeowner
become more aware of what needs to be done to make the home as
fre proof as possible.
Hunters: fall brings hunters to the forest, deer stands get
cold, and its tempting to leave the campfre burning. However,
it is important that they observe all open fre regulations and
recommendations:
Drive only on designated trails. Dont park or idle vehicles in dry
grass, which can be ignited by contact with a hot muffer.
Use caution with cigarettes and matches.
Use spark arresters on all power equipment
Obey outdoor burning bans. Dont build a fre during dry or
windy conditions.
Clean the area where the fre will be built.
Never leave the fre unattended.
Store any fre starter materials away from the burn area.
Keep fre extinguishing materials close at hand.
It is recommended that a commercial fre extinguisher be kept
close by.

The Hawg Hunters Bass Club of
Lake Charles held their September
tournament on Toledo Bend. Larry
and Quincy Byrd bested the feld of
anglers with a 5 fsh limit weighing
16.28 lbs which took frst place. The
father and son team used jigs for the
majority of their frst place catch.
Steve Toney fshed the south
end of the lake with crankbaits for
a second place 5 fsh tournament
limit weighing 15.66 lbs. Toneys
limit also included the big bass for
the tournament, which was a 6.09
pounder.
Terry and Randy Hornsby used
Carolina rigged fukes for a 3rd place
fnish weighing 12.55 lbs.
The 409 Bass Club held their 9th event of
the 2012 season on Sam Rayburn, October
3rd and 6th. There were 15 teamed anglers
that showed up for the all cash purse. The
conditions Wednesday were calm, clear, and
sunny with the water temps running in the
upper 70s. The anglers that fshed Saturday
faced frontal conditions, with high winds
cloudy skies and occasional drizzle. After all
the weights were tallied, 1st and 3rd place
were only separated by a half a pound. First
place went to Eric Van Horn and Will Williford
with 11.99 lbs. They reported catching their
fsh in the mid-lake area on topwater and
spinnerbaits in the morning and as the sun
got overhead they picked a few off with
fnesse soft plastics. Jim McDonald and
Stan Verett weighed in 11.67 lbs to take
second place. They reported catching the
majority of their fsh on spinnerbaits and
topwaters. The weight of 11.54 lbs was
enough to give Marcus Van Horn and Billy
Desormeaux 3rd place. Their catch came
mostly on soft plastics.
Top big bass honors went to Michael
Stephenson with a nice 4.50 pounder that
was caught on a topwater frog. The fnal
regular season tournament will be held on
Sam Rayburn on November 7th and 10th.
The 409 Bass Club would like to thank Bass
Kandi, Simon Outftters and R1-Bass for their
continuing support.
Jimmy Campbell won the Many Bass Clubs October 2012 tournament with a fve fsh limit
weighing 12.42 lbs. Fishing ledges and points in the southern part of Toledo Bend Campbell
caught his fsh using a Carolina rig in 1218 feet of water. Mike Smith was the 2nd place & Big
Bass winner with a fve fsh limit weighing 11.86
lbs, his big bass weighed 6.44 lbs. Jim Campbell
fnished in 3rd place with a fve fsh limit weighing
11.10 lbs.
A total of 65 fsh were caught weighing 145
lbs for an average fsh weight of 2.20 lbs.
April & October are the two months of
the year that are open to guests and lady
anglers. Fishing in conjunction with the clubs
regular tournament, lady anglers compete
in these two combined tournaments for the
Lady Angler of the Year title. This year, edging
out her close competitor by .07 lbs, Tammy
Mong was crowned Lady Angler of the Year!

Weevils successfully destroy
acres of lake-invading plants

A weevil that feeds exclusively on giant salvinia has successfully
destroyed about 150 acres of the invasive plant this summer on
B.A. Steinhagen Lake near Woodville in East Texas, according to
personnel involved in a statewide giant salvinia management
program.
Researchers from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Texas Parks
and Wildlife Department, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service
and Texas A&M AgriLife Research are working to control giant
salvinia, a free-foating aquatic fern native to South America.
The plant has invaded 17 Texas lakes and bodies of water in
the southeastern U.S., according to Dr. Allen Knutson, AgriLife
Extension entomologist in Dallas.
Knutson said the fast-growing plant forms dense mats, which
interfere with water recreation, displace native vegetation and
reduce oxygen content of the water, often harming fsh and other
aquatic life.
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Departments Aquatic Habitat
Enhancement Program staff has released more than 112,000
adult weevils since 2010 from its Jasper rearing facility onto B.A.
Steinhagen Lake.
Knutson, Dr. Abhishek Mukherjee and Dr. Kevin Heinz, Texas
A&M University department of entomology, and Chris Moret,
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, studied the lakes weevil
populations this year and in 2011.
Late last winter, weevil numbers ranged between 20 and
30 weevils per kilogram of salvinia and are now up to 60 per
kilogram, which is an excellent population, Mukherjee said.
Populations of this size cause more damage to the plant than it
can overcome and are able to effectively control giant salvinia.
Photos taken before and after weevil releases illustrate the
tremendous job the weevils have done in controlling giant salvinia
this year, said Floyd Boyett of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in
Woodville. We purposefully refrained from spraying this area to
see what the weevils could do this year.
Now, there is abundant open water, and what giant salvinia
remains is contained within foating mats of grass or lotus along
the shore, he said. Weevils are in areas east and south of where
they were released, indicating that the foating material must have
carried the weevils a good distance and allowed them to establish.
Knutson said a similar effort aims to recreate these successful
results at Caddo Lake in northeast Texas. Research there is being
conducted at a weevil-rearing facility at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Services Caddo Lake National Wildlife Refuge through the Center
for Invasive Species Eradication. The center is part of the Texas
Water Resources Institute, AgriLife Research and AgriLife Extension
and operated in collaboration with Texas Parks and Wildlife, U.S.
Fish and Wildlife Services Caddo Lake National Wildlife Refuge
and the Caddo Lake Institute.
Lucas Gregory, the water institutes manager for the project, said
giant salvinia is extremely abundant at Caddo Lake this year.
The food and freezes in the winters of 2010 and 2011 greatly
reduced the amount of giant salvinia present in Caddo Lake, but
it has come back with a vengeance this year, he said. Some
areas of the upper lake are almost impassable due to thick mats of
salvinia.
So far in 2012, the facility has produced about 50,000 adult
weevils, which were released at a research site on Caddo Lake,
Knutson said.
Efforts to establish a self-sustaining weevil population on
Caddo are underway, Knutson said. However, the effectiveness
of the salvinia weevil, a tropical insect, is limited by cold winters,
especially at Caddo Lake.
Our research has demonstrated that populations vary in their
ability to survive freezing weather, he said. We are now searching
for cold-tolerant strains that could better survive cold winters in
Texas and therefore have a greater impact on salvinia infestations
the following summer.
Knutson and Mukherjee plan to acquire some weevils from
Argentina later this year and evaluate their cold-hardiness in
laboratory tests at Texas A&M.
By collecting weevils in higher, and therefore colder, elevations
in Argentina, we expect to fnd weevils more cold tolerant than
those currently in the United States, which were originally
collected from Brazil, he said. Finding more cold-tolerant weevil
populations would be especially helpful when colder winters return
to East Texas.

Bass Regulations 101
Often, especially when I am out doing creel
surveys, I come across fshermen that want to know
why TPWD has a certain bass regulation in place
versus some other regulation. Depending on what
the fshermens motivation is, more often than not
the appropriate regulation they feel is needed is
the one that will likely impose the least restriction
over them compared to other fshermen with
different fshing motivations (i.e. harvest, release,
tournament, non-tournament, etc.). The goal of any
fshery regulation is to ensure long term sustainable
quality use of a natural resource. Texas has three
general types of bass regulations minimum length
limits, slot length limits, and catch and release only.
Most bass fsheries are regulated with minimum
length limits. The current general statewide
largemouth bass 14-inch minimum length limit
has been in place since 1986. A few lakes in the
state have minimum length limits of 16 inches
and 18 inches. Minimum length limits are suited
for fsheries where the goal is to increase catch
rates and overall yield. Minimum length limits
are recommended for bass populations that
have low to moderate recruitment (baby bass
production) and good growth rates. The purpose of
the minimum length limit is to provide protection
for the reproductive potential of the population.
Largemouth bass generally are sexually mature
at about 10 inches, so with the 14-inch minimum
length limit most bass will be provided with at
least one spawning season before they reach legal
size and can be harvested. Most bass in East Texas
lakes will reach 14 inches in about three years.
The success of a minimum length limit depends
on fshing and harvest pressure, with the higher
the degree of harvest on the fsh to be protected
the greater the potential increase in catch rates
following a minimum length limit. In other words,
if you let smaller fsh go you can catch them later
on when they are a little bigger. We know from
recent studies on Sam Rayburn that about 10% of
all legal sized bass die each year from fshing (all
fshing, tournament and non-tournament). This
is a low to moderate mortality rate and maybe
the population does not quite need the amount of
protection being provided. However, growth rates
are excellent, catch rates of largemouth bass are
some of the highest in the state, and the population
has an excellent size structure under the current
regulations.
A slot limit is a size range in which fsh may only
be harvested below and above that range. TPWD
has managed largemouth bass at select lakes with
slot limits since the mid 1980s. Some notable lakes
that have slot limits are Nacogdoches and Fork and
both have shown excellent results under their slot
limits. Slot limits usually work well in restructuring
the size structure of a fsh population where there
is high recruitment and low to moderate growth
rates. Allowing harvest of smaller fsh decreases their
abundance and competition and improves growth
and survival of larger fsh. Slot limits also provide
protection to those fsh within the slot, which are
usually quality sized and increases the catch rates
of those fsh but not harvest. The lakes that we have
had the best success with slot limits are those places
where recruitment is high due to a lot of vegetation,
and fshing and harvest pressure is also high.
Catch-and-release only regulations are usually
set in lakes that have been newly renovated and
stocked or where there is little recruitment and
good growth. Obviously this is a regulation that is
imposed when the objective is to leave every fsh in
the water. The three situations where a catch-and-
release only regulation should be used is when high
catch rates are the goal, fshing for food is not a
priority, and length and bag limits are not adequate
to prevent over fshing of the population.
TPWD is constantly monitoring lakes and
the fsh that live within them. We are full of
information, statistics, graphs, etc. Really though
at the end of the day all we can do is manage the
people that use the resource through length limit
regulations. This is why it is imperative that TPWD
personnel spend as much time as possible in the
feld speaking with the people that we represent
and serve. More often than not we get our best
information during our creel surveys when we are
trying to fnd out how people are using the fsheries
and what their success in doing so is. We are always
looking at our lakes to see if abundance and size
of the fsh are changing over time and to see how
the habitat is doing. Finally, regularly we need to
honestly ask ourselves if the regulations we have
in place are the best for the people and best for the
resource and be willing to change if necessary.
