More appliance recycling options

for great Lakes energy members
improvements made at east Jordan city airport
Great Lakes Energy has expanded its appliance re-
cycling program giving its member-consumers more
opportunities to save energy and receive more re-
bates.
GLE members can schedule a free pick up of an
old refrigerator or freezer and receive a $30 rebate.
They can now receive an additional $15 for each old
air conditioner or dehumidifier that is picked up at
the same time as their old refrigerator or freezer.
Great Lakes Energy member-consumers can save
up to $150 annually on their electric bills and prevent
10 tons of CO2 and CO2 equivalent from entering the
atmosphere by recycling outdated refrigerators or
freezers. That amounts to saving up to 1,000 kilowatt
hours (kWh) annually, or about 20 days of an average
home’s total kWh use.
In addition, recycling an outdated refrigerator
saves over 188 pounds of metal, glass, and other ma-
terials for future use. It has the environmental im-
pact of removing two cars from the road for a year.
“It’s an easy and effective way for our members to
save money on their electric bill, especially now dur-
ing Energy Awareness month,” says Shari Culver,
GLE’s vice-president of communications and mar-
keting. “Old refrigerators and freezers consume as
much as three times more energy than newer, more
energy-efficient models.”
How to participate
To schedule a free pick up of an old, secondary re-
frigerator or freezer call 1-877-296-4319 or visit michi-
gan-energy.org. Refrigerators and freezers must be in
working order and have 10 cubic feet or more of stor-
age capacity to be eligible for the program. There is (left to right) Bob Strehl - volunteer, Courtney Fender - east Jordan Chamber Ambassador, Tom Sheridan - Airport Assistant

doomed program restored and full state
funding for over 200 at-risk youth
Jimmie Jones from the Michigan Youth Chal-
leNGe Academy (MYCA) is hosting an orientation
for the January class at the Grayling National
Guard Armory on October 27th at 10:00 AM. The
goals of the orientation are to familiarize new ap-
plicants with the ChalleNGe Program and to fill
the largest class since 2009.
The Academy was removed from the 2010 state
budget. However, it was able to survive on less
than half of its original funding through negotia-
tions. The State Legislature and Governor’s Office
approved the Program for 1.5 Mil for the Fiscal
year 2013, which will enable the MYCA to return
to its previous size of over 200 accepted applicants
per class.
The Michigan Youth ChalleNGe Academy is a
22-week resident course designed to help high
school dropouts or at-risk youth earn a GED or
high school diploma, improve life skills, and gain
employment in a military-style environment. In
addition to 400 hours of classroom instruction,
students receive leadership skills, self-discipline,
and physical and vocational training. They also
perform a minimum of 40 hours of Service to
