Cookie Cutter
nce, I had a friend come to pick me up so we could go to the movies together. She had a hard time finding my house because she didnt own a GPS, so I had to describe where it was to her over the phone. She did finally find it after a lot of confusion, and upon entering my neighborhood for the first time, she told me, laughing, Wow, all the houses here are so cookie cutter. I knew she meant it as a joke, so I laughed along with her, but I couldnt help but feel slightly irritated by what she said. It was true-the houses in my neighborhood are externally very generic, which was something I noticed myself when I first moved in. But still, something just nagged me about her statement,
and I couldnt figure out why. Thinking about it now, I guess it was because it gave off the implication that my home, not just my house, was ordinary...nothing special. And thats not the case at all. I guess most people wouldnt know it because of how plain my house is on the outside, but its absolutely amazing. Its where my dad first taught me how to play guitar and where I celebrated getting a 4.0 in my first semester of high school. Its where my little sister cultivated her passion for knitting and where I watched my first pet, an adorable baby kitten grow up into a feisty, hyperactive cat. And no, its not perfect, and as many good times there have been, there have also been equally as many bad times.
But I love it, because as imperfect as it is, its my home, and thats what makes it wonderful. Theres nowhere else I could sing as loudly or dance as awkwardly or act as crazily as I want without shame. Theres nowhere else where I could feel as loved and accepted and prided upon just for being who I am, and altogether, its those aspects that separates it from being any ordinary cookie cutter house. Its been a big part in shaping the person I am today, and as much as I complain about it, I wouldnt trade my crazy, perfectly imperfect home for anything in the world.
