ThentheDRAGONLANCE(R),DARKSUN(R),andSPELLJAMMER(R) campaignsappeared,andwehadthingslikekender,halfgiants, andxixchilPCsrunningaround.(Xixchil?Look'emup.)Thencame TheCompleteBookofHumanoids,andeverythingfromaarakocrato wemicswasreadyforplayerstoplay.Youcouldalmostforgetthat humanswereevenaround. YettherichnessoftheAD&Dfantasyuniversewashardly touched.WiththereleaseofTSR'sCOUNCILOFWYRMS(TM)boxed adventureinJune1994,thefrontiersofroleplayingwere expandedyetagain,thistimebyahugemargin.Inthismost fantasticofallcampaignsettings,playerscannowbecomethe mightiestofcreaturesdragons! Butthere'smore!PlayersusingCOUNCILOFWYRMSrulesalso canbecomehalfdragons,thegrownoffspringoftheunionof certainmetallicdragonsandtheirdemihumanvassals.Theboxed setprovidesmanydetailsonthestatisticsandroleplayingof theserare,unusualbeings,butthetopicbegsformore elaboration.Cantherebehalfdragonsinothercampaigns?Ifso, howaretheyplayed,andwhataretheylike? Thisfileprovidesanexpandedlookathalfdragonsfromother TSRcampaignworlds.DungeonMastersmustdecidewhethertobring thisinformationintotheircampaigns,ofcourse,butguidelines foritssensibleusearepresented.

Fantasygenetics Somebasicrestrictionsshouldbelaiddownregarding halfdragons.Thereareimportantexceptionstotheserules,but forthemostparttheyshouldbetakenasbasicfantasy"truths." First,onlymaledragonsandfemalehumansordemihumanscan createhalfdragonchildren;femaledragonscannotbeimpregnated bymalehumansordemihumans,andbeingsotherthanhumansor demihumanscannotbearadragon'schildren.(Anexceptionoccurs withtheOrientaldragons,asdetailedlater.)Demihumansinclude elves,halfelves,dwarves,gnomes,halflings,kender,andsimilar humanlikeraces(includingdrow).Thiscategorydoesnotinclude giants,ogres,orcs,halforcs,halfogres,goblins,centaurs,and other"nonhuman"races;fornow,we'llassumethattheseracesare notfertilewithdragons,orthatdragonswon'thaveanythingto dowiththem. Second,onlythosedragonswiththeinnatepowerto polymorphthemselvesintohumanordemihumanshapecan interbreedwiththelatterwhileinthelatter'sform. Third,interbreedingisnotpossiblewhileadragonisusinga normalpolymorphselfspell,soareddragonorshadowdragon withafourthlevelspellslotcouldnotimpregnateahumanor demihumanfemale. Fourth,somedragonsthatmighthavethepowertocreate halfdragonoffspringsimplyhavenointerestindoingso,and activelyavoidit.Thesearemostcommonlydragonswhohavelittle ornointerestinhumanityorhavestrongprejudicesagainst humans,demihumans,ormammalsingeneral,greatlypreferringthe companyofotherdragonsalone.(Thispointallowsustoeliminate thehalfplatinum,halfadamantite,halfradiant,andother potentiallyoverpowerfultypesnotabadthing,asthese admittedlymakelittlesenseinacarefullyconsideredcampaign. ImagineZeusfallingdesperatelyinlovewithanoverly intelligenthamsterandwantingthefuzzylittlerodenttobear hischildren.Onemustdrawthelinesomewhere!) TheCOUNCILOFWYRMSsetprovidestherulesforgenerating halfdragonsintheIo'sBloodislandscampaign,andtheserules aregenerallyfollowedhere.However,notalldragonsonall worldsarealike,asyouwillseeandtherearemoresortsof dragonsthanjustgold,silver,andbronze.Asnotedabove,we alsoopenuptheworldofhalfdragon/halfhumanoffspring. Generalnotes

Muchofwhatfollowsappliestohalfdragonoffspringwhose dragonparentswereametallictype.Thematerialisbasedonthe principlessetforthintheCOUNCILOFWYRMSboxedset.The childrenofOrientaldragons,however,aremuchdifferentin natureandreceivemuchdifferenttreatment. Halfdragonsaresubjectedtoconsiderableprejudiceinmany landsonmanyworlds,makingthemajorityofthemexilesand outsiders.Theideaofcreaturesasdifferentasdragonsand demihumans(ordragonsandhumans)havingoffspringisconsidered repugnantbymostindividualsofanyspecies,evenwithinthe COUNCILOFWYRMSsetting.Forexample,halfdragonshaveno officialplaceintheCOUNCILOFWYRMSsettingitself,eventhough thisiswheretheyaremostcommonlyfound,andmosthalfdragons findthemselvescastoutofthesocietiesofeitherparent. Evenamongthosedragonswhowillinglyengageinintimate relationswithhumanordemihumanmates,producinghalfdragon youngisbasicallyunacceptable.Adragonmaytrulyloveamate, butdragonsocietiesofalmostanylandfindtheideaofcreating halfdragonsintolerable.Thus,halfdragonyoungarequiterare. Halfdragoninfantstakethephysicalformoftheirhumanor demihumanparent.Fewphysicalfeaturesidentifyanewbornbabeas ahalfdragon,thoughtherearetelltalesignsthatacareful observercouldnotmiss.(Fearofdiscoverythusleadsmost motherstoleavehome,nevertoreturn,toseekasecure wildernessareatogivebirthoftenthelairofthedragon parent.)Thehalfdragonnewbornusuallyhaseyesorhairthatare thecolorofthedragonparent'sscales,suchasgold,silver,or bronze. Astheyreachadulthood,halfdragonsgrowtallandlean,no matterwhathumanordemihumanbloodmixeswiththeirdraconic heritage.Thedragonheritagethenbeginstodevelop,overwhelming "lesser"genes.Duringadolescence,dragonlikepowersmanifest themselves.(Thesearecalled"discretionaryabilities"inAD&D gameterms,astheyarechosenbytheplayerduringthe character'sprogression.)Theseabilitiesbecomestrongerandmore pronouncedwithtimeanduse,untilahalfdragongrowstofull power.Physicalchangesaccompanytheappearanceofthese abilities,eventuallymetamorphosingtheyouthintoabeautiful

anduniquebeingbutthebeautyisanalienone,notentirely alonghumanordemihumanstandards. Amaturehalfdragonlookslikeaverytall,slenderhumanoid withelflikefeatures:athinframe,leanmuscles,longlimbs,and pointedears.Itdoesnotmatterwhichhumanordemihumanstock runsthroughthehalfdragon'sblood.Skinhasthelookand textureofnormalflesh,thoughwiththepigmentationofthe draconicparent(golden,silvery,orbronzetinged,forexample). Thehalfdragon'shairisluxuriousandthick,ofadeeperor richershadeoftheflesh'scolor.Thefingersarelongandthin, withnailsliketalons.Yetthetruemarkofdragonheritageisin theface,whichhasaremarkablyreptilianappearance:snakelike eyes,elongatedfeatures,andahintofhornsprotrudingfrom abovethetemples.Halfdragonshavenowings,notails,andno scales. Halfdragonsdonotautomaticallylearnanylanguageexcept forthosetaughtbytheirparents.Ifthedragonparentis present,whateverdraconiclanguagesthatparentknowsmaybe learned,andthehumanordemihumanparent'snativetonguesalso maybepickedup.(TheKrynnishhalfsilver,detailedlater,will neverstartoutknowingadragon'slanguage,astheoncedragon parentlosttheabilitytospeakthosetonguesupon transformation.)Notethebonuslanguagespickedupbyriver spiritfolk,thehalfdragonoffspringofcertainOriental dragons,asshowninthesectioncalled"Halfdragonroster." Beyondthesegeneralities,halfdragonsofvariousAD&Dgame worldshavefewthingsincommon.Ashortlookateachworld follows,withappropriatenotesandcomments. GREYHAWK(R)campaign Oerthisamorecosmopolitansettingthanmany,itspeoples longaccustomedtomagicaldisplaysandunusualbeingsintheir midst.Individualpower,bothphysicalandmagical,isrespected andsought;thepeopleoftheFlanaessareonthewholepractical, calculating,materialistic,andpronetolookingoutfortheirown interestsfirst.Thisdarkflavorhaspromotedacertainfreedom frombiasamongitspeoples,especiallyintheCityofGreyhawk. Onewaghascommentedthatastrangercanbeasstrangeashe wants,solongasheobeystherulesofthegame. Interbreedingbetweendragonsandtwoleggedmortalsisthus notunheardofhere,thoughitwillprovokeanythingfromoutrage tosighs,painedlooks,andacertainrollingofeyes.Halfdragon offspringwhosurvivetoadulthoodencounterfewsocialstigmasin

enlightenedareas,whichunfortunatelyarefewinthepostwar Flanaess.MosthalfdragonswillintimecongregateintheCityof Greyhawk,whichhasbecomeahavenforthem.Indeed,inGreyhawk, beingthedescendantofadragongivesweighttoahalfdragon's socialandpoliticalstatusasthedragonparentisassumedtobe availabletoperformafavorortwoortoofferadvice,regardless ofwhetherthisisactuallytrue. Afewhalfdragonindividualsappearinthehistoriesofthe Flanaessanditsnations.Rumorssometimespassthatonememberof theCircleofEighthaddragonancestorsinhisfamilytree. Still,becausetheylooksodifferent,halfdragonstendtobe lonersandhaveveryfewassociates(andfewerstilltrusted friends). OfthedragontypesmentionedintheCOUNCILOFWYRMSset, onlythegoldandsilverdragonsofOerthcaninterbreedwith humansanddemihumans.BronzedragonsofOerthcannotassumehuman ordemihumanform,beingrestrictedtotakingtheshapesofhigher mammalsonly. Halfgoldandhalfsilver:Thebasicstatisticsforthese racesareasdescribedintheCOUNCILOFWYRMSset.Thehalfgold typeisextremelyrare,onlytwobeingknowninthelast500years (andtheyweretwins).Thehalfsilverisbetterknown;oneis rumoredtooperatealoneinthedomainsofIuzasaranger,acting asacombinationspy,saboteur,andguerillafighter.Threeare rumoredtoliveintheCityofGreyhawk,butlittleisknownabout them. HalfGreyhawk:AuniquedragontypefoundonlyonOerthis thesocalledGreyhawkdragon,whichappearstoberelated (probablybysomecommonancestor)tothesteeldragonofthe FORGOTTENREALMS(R)setting.TheGreyhawkdragon,describedinthe GREYHAWKMONSTROUSCOMPENDIUM(R)appendixandGREYHAWK Adventureshardbound,loveshumananddemihumancompany,living outmuchofitslifeincities,particularlytheCityofGreyhawk forwhichitwasnamed.TheGreyhawkdragonissaidtobealmost aslikelytohaveanondragonconsortasadragonone,whichhas giventhecityaslightlyseedyreputationamongknowledgeable travelers.Thispreferencehasalsogiventhecityaboutadozen halfGreyhawksatanyparticulartime,nearlyallofwhomfind

gainfulemploymentwiththeirdraconicparents. DRAGONLANCE(R)campaign Generallyspeaking,residentsofthecontinentofAnsalonare idealists,forgoodorevil.Theircousinsonthecontinentof Taladasaremorepracticalandearthy,butstillpronetocarry causes.Moreinsularthanthepeoplesofmostworlds,Krynnish folkareslowtotrustoutsidersanddonotminglewellwiththose whoarenotlikethem.Thiscautioneasilycrossesoverinto prejudice,andhalfdragonsherecannotexpecteasyacceptance,if theywinanydegreeofacceptanceatall. OfallthedragonsoftheworldofKrynn,onlytwosortshave thepowertoassumehumanordemihumanshapegoldandsilver dragons.(Bronzedragonshere,asonGreyhawk'sOerth,canassume onlytheformsofmammals.)Ofthesetwo,onlysilverdragons enjoytakingthesmallershape.Indeed,unlikethedisdainfulgold dragonswhoholdthemselveslargelyapartfromtheaffairsof twoleggedbeings,silverdragonslovehumanandelvencompany. LegendsaretoldofHumaandthesilverdragonwholovedhim,and ofSilvaraandtheelflordGilthanis,whovanishedfromtheworld beforetheCouncilofWhitestoneandwereneverheardfromagain. Tragedy,however,inevitablyscarsanylovingrelationship betweenmortalanddragon.Withouttransformation(explained later),adragonwillfaroutliveitspartner,andthecouplewill bearnochildren.Withtransformation,thedragonlosesalmostall tracesofitsoldidentityandmustconfronttherapidlyclosing specterofdeaththatfacesallhumansanddemihumans.Worse,the enemiesofgooddragonsaremanyandhavelongmemories;evil forceswouldbeonlytoohappytostrikebackatasilverdragon, inwhateverform,throughthedragon'slovedones.Themortal lovereventuallymightevenrejectthetransformedpartnerforany numberofreasons,leavingtheformerdragondevastatedand aloneandperhapswithachild.(Itmustbeaddedthatthislast possibilityhasnotyethappened,thankfully.) Mostdevastatingofall,however,isthealmostuniversal oppositionthatKrynnishnativesanddragonshaveforanyhint ofintimaterelationsbetweendragonandnondragon.Thediscovery thatalovingpartnerisactuallyasilverdragonhasbeenknown todestroyarelationship,andevenanacceptinghumanorelven partnerwillfacehorror,rage,andpityfromothersofhiskind wholearnofthesituation. Halfsilver:TherehaveneverbeenanyKrynnishstories, fromanysource,ofanyoffspringresultingfromtheunionofa

silverdragonandahumanordemihuman.(Thefewtragicromances knowntolegendinvolvedahumanorelvenmale.)Therearerumors, however,thatasilverdragonwholovesamortalcanbegiventhe chancetoforeverremaininmortalform,asaspecialgiftfrom thedragongodPaladine.Suchwassaidtobethechoicethat Huma'sloverfaced,thoughsheturneditdownsothatHumacould findthedragonlancesandfighttheevildragonsoftheworld. AnyKrynnishsilverdragonwhomateswithahumanordemihuman oftheoppositesexwillnotbeabletoconceivechildren. However,asilverdragonwhoistransformedbyPaladineintoa mortalwillbeabletohavechildrennormally.Such transformationsarealmostunheardof,andnoexamplesareknown ofit.Thesetransformations,intoeitherhuman,halfelven,or elvenform,wouldbedonesolelyfortheloveofamortalhuman, elf,orhalfelf,invariablyofgoodalignment,whostandsoutas anadmiredchampionofGood. Thechildofsuchaunionalwaysappearstohavethenormal characteristicsofitsmother,whethershewasoriginallyahuman, halfelf,orelf(orwastransformedintoone).Thechild'ssilver irisesandhairarenotparticularlyremarkabletomostpassersby, assomeelvenraceshavethesamefeatures.However,thechild willshowalifelongaptitudeatunderstandinganythingsaidto it,inanylanguage.Evenifspokentoinaforeigntongue,the childhasa75%chanceofmakingitsanswerclearlyknown. Additionally,theoffspringcanreachconsiderablelevelsof abilityinwhatevercharacterclassitadopts,perhapslessthana humancoulddobutoftenbetterthananormalelforhalfelf. Otherthanthis,theKrynnishhalfsilverhasnoparticular legacy,exceptfortheundoubtedlyshockingdiscoverythatoneof itsparentswasonceadragon.Thismomentcouldbetheonethat caststhecharacteroutintotheworldasanadventurer,seeking tolearnmoreaboutitsparent'slostdragonheritagewhiletrying tokeepthesameknowledgeasecretfrompotentiallyhostile strangers.Unfortunately,thecharacter'sacceptanceintosilver dragonsocietyishardlyguaranteed. FORGOTTENREALMS(R)campaign ThepeopleoftheRealmsarealmostascosmopolitanasthose

ofOerth,butlessinclinedtoselfcenteredness.Theyareoften idealisticaswell,butstillpronetomindtheirownbusinessand avoidpryingintothelivesofstrangers,whoaregenerally acceptedandtreatedwellbutwithsomereserve(atleastingood societies).Ahalfdragon,however,willfaceprejudiceinsome areasbecauseofitsstrangeappearance. Aconfusingelementthrownintothediscussionofhalfdragons intheRealmsistheissueofweredragons,auniquelocalrace describedinDRAGON(R)issue#134andtheFORGOTTENREALMS adventure,FA1HallsoftheHighKing.Thisraceisinterfertile withbothdragonsandhumans,butitisnot(yet)suitablefor presentationasaplayercharacterintheAD&Dgame,sowewill skipfurtherdiscussionofithere. Asidefromtheusualgold,silver,andbronzedragons(the latterofwhichcanassumehumanordemihumanformintheRealms), afewotherdragontypesarepresentthatcan(andsometimesdo) interbreedwithtwoleggedfolk. Halfgold,halfsilver,halfbronze:Theseareallfound intheRealms,thoughtheycannotpossiblybecalledcommonor even"rare."EvenElminsterispressedtonamemorethantwodozen ofthemknownfromthelastthousandyearsofRealmshistory,and someofthese(wholedlessthanexemplarylives)aresuspectedof fabricatingtheir"draconic"parentagetocoverdarkeroriginsor togainacertainnotorietyorrespectfrompeers. Halfsteel:ThesteeldragonoftheRealms,calledthe Waterdeepdragonbysomebecauseitismostoftenfoundinthat city,appearsrelatedtotheGreyhawkdragonthrougharather recentcommonancestor.Thesteeldragon(describedinthe FORGOTTENREALMSsupplementDraconomicon)sharesmanyofthe characteristicsandbehaviorsoftheGreyhawkdragon.Aswouldbe expected,therearealsoaboutadozenorsohalfsteelsin Waterdeep,looselyassociatedasalittleknowngroupcalling itselfTheConfluence.MembersofTheConfluencearesupportedby patronswhoareusuallytheirparents,eitherdragon,human,or demihuman.Halfsteelstravelinmagicaldisguisesor,atminimum, inallcoveringrobestoavoiddrawingattention.Theyareoften calledupontoundertakemissionsfortheirpatrons,andthey themselvesmighthirenoviceadventurerstoperformcertain missions,thoughwithoutrevealingtheirtruenatures. Drowdragon(halfdeep):Theevildeepdragonsofthe Realms'Underdarkhaveonlyonetwoleggedally:thedrow.Onecan hardlyimaginethepotentialforevilofwhichtheprogenyofa deepdragonandadrowwouldbecapable,andthisoutcomeis

indeedthecaseinnearlyall"drowdragons,"astheyarecalled. Onlytwohavebeenknowntorecordedhistory;onewasslaininits youthbyjealousdrowrivals,buttheothergainedconsiderable powerandmayyetlivesomewhereintheUnderdark.Itis speculatedthatadrowdragoncouldbecomedisenchantedwithits lifeundergroundandbecomeaseekerofgood,butthechancesof thisareregardedareminuscule. KaraTurcampaign BecauseoftheunusualpowersandstatusoftheOriental dragonsoftheRealms,theyandtheiroffspringaretreatedhere separatelyfromthe"western"dragonsofthatlandandother worlds.Itshouldbenotedthatthankstospelljamming,Oriental dragonsarewellestablishedonavarietyofworldsinmany crystalspheres.Still,allthatissaidaboutthehalfdragonsof KaraTurappliestosimilarbeingselsewhere. CertaintypesofOrientaldragonsofKaraTurarewellknown totakehumanloversattimes,eitherbydesignorwhim.(Elves andother"western"demihumansarelittleknowninKaraTur,and OrientaldragonsarenotparticularlyinterestedinOriental demihumanssuchaskorobokuruorhengeyokai.)Highlyrespected royalfamiliesandthelowestpeasantclansareequallylikelyto havedragonsasancestors(possiblythesamedragon),thoughsuch aneventisstillquiterare.Thisdoesn'tpreventsome exaggeratedboastsandoutrightfalsehoodsfrombeinghandeddown throughthegenerationsbyunknowingdescendants.Humanancestors whowereknowntobetheconsortsofdragonshaveaspecial notorietyinfamilyhistories,andareaccreditedwith extraordinarybeauty,leadership,rightfulbehavior,marvelous clothing,orothersuchqualities.Tobethepartnerofadragon, underalmostanycircumstances,isoftenabadgeofhonor. Thereasonsforsuchgeneralacceptancearenothardto fathom.ThehalfdragonoffspringofOrientaldragons,knownas spiritfolk,arequitebeautifulbyhumanstandards.(Obviously, differentlawsofgeneticsapplytoOrientaldragonsthanapplyto theirwesterncousins.)Theappearanceandmysteriousnaturesof spiritfolkmakethemintenselyattractive.Furthermore,Oriental dragonsareacentralpartofthemuchreveredCelestial

BureaucracyofKaraTur,andanypositiveassociationwiththemis widelysought,particularlybythosewhoselivelihoodsfallunder theswayofparticulardragonsintheBureaucracy. TwotypesofOrientaldragonsareknowntotakehumanlovers, andeitherbearorfatherchildrenbythem.Bothareriver dragons:thechianglungandtheshenlung.Theirhalfhuman offspringareriverspiritfolk,whoaredetailedintheOriental AdventuresvolumeandKaraTurappendixtotheMONSTROUS COMPENDIUMsupplement.Riverspiritfolkareeasilyacceptedinto theirhumanparents'clansorfamilies,thoughtheyalsomustobey anydirectives,summons,orrequestsfromtheirdragonparents withoutquestionordelay.Theyarealsosubjecttomoodswings basedontheconditionoftheirhomerivers,asoutlinedinthe tworeferencesnamedabove. Halfchianglung:Thesearethemostcommonhalfdragons ofKaraTur,buthalfshenlungrunaclosesecond.Thedaughters oftheofficiouschianglungfindhumansfascinating,andoften theyassumehumanformandattempttomarrymenwhohavecaught theirfancy.Thesedaughters'fathers,however,arefarfrom pleasedatsuchliaisons,andmightordertheirdaughters(even themarriedones)toreturntotheirriverhomesforever.Itis notunusualforsuchprohibitionstoarrivetoolatetoprevent thebirthofchildren,however,andafterajointupbringingby dragonandhumanclanstheseyouthsarefreetogoadventuringif theywish. Suchadventurersareinvariablywarriortypes,particularly samuraiandkensaibecauseoftheirhighsocialstandingand martialexcellence.Thegrownoffspringofchianglungandhumans areknown(andsometimesfeared)fortheirpursuitofperfection, honor,andduty.Someeventuallyleadtheirhumanparents'clans, aneventthatthealliesofthoseclanscelebrateandtheenemies ofthoseclansregardwithgreatconcern,ifnotterror. Itdoeshappen,ifachianglungmaleiswithoutapartner, thathemightbeattractedtoahumanfemaleofexceptionalbeauty ortalent.Thisisveryrare,however,asmalechianglungtry veryhardtodiscourageinterbreedingofanykind.Inanyevent, riverspiritfolkbornofchianglungandhumansarequitewelcome ineithersociety,andanychianglungelderwouldlookuponthe achievementsofhisspiritfolkgrandchildwithpride. Halfshenlung:Nearlyallthatissaidaboveabout halfchianglungistrueofthehalfshenlung,whoarealsoriver spiritfolk.Mostofthosewhogoadventuringarechaoticbut honorablebushiwhodonotcaretosubmitthemselvestoaplethora

oflaws.Itisalsothecaseherethatmaleandfemaleshenlung areequallyattractedtooppositesexhumanpartners. Dragonsfromotherworlds Itisdifficulttosaymuchaboutthewidevarietyofdragons acrossthemanycrystalspheresandOuterPlanes,regardingany halfhumanoffspringtheymighthave.Aboutallthatcanbesaid isthatthesingulardragontypes,suchastheplatinumdragon (variouslyknownasBahamutorPaladine)andthetwoadamantite dragonsoftheTwinParadises,isthattheyaretooconcernedwith dragonstobothermuchwithhumans.
