About IMEC

International Mechanical Engineering Convention 2012

The organizing team of ASME GIKI Chapter believes in continuous improvement and modifications to our events to conform to an ever evolving engineering field. We have incorporated three new modules, Human Powered Vehicles Contest (HPVC), Rapid Design Competition and Climate Control Challenge to this years event. In HPVC the participants will be required to build vehicles that dont require any chemical energy (from fossil fuel) to run. These vehicles shall run by mechanical effort put by the driver. This category can prove to be of immense use in Pakistan keeping in mind the energy and fossil fuel shortage issues. The second category named Rapid Design Competition calls for students to solve real world engineering problems. Problems would be taken from daily life or from industry that would require innovation as well as software techniques. The third new module climatic challenge calls for participants to develop a prototype of a climate control system by controlling parameters like temperature, humidity, and light intensity for a specific crop which would greatly increase the growth of that crop. Therefore this event may help Pakistan in increasing its agriculture capacity.

MODULES
Human Powered Vehicle Contest (HPVC)
Design a vehicle powered not by polluting fossil fuels but your very own hands and legs! The HumanPowered Vehicle Contest aims to develop a simple and cost-effective alternative to conventional vehicles. The contest will require an innovative solution to what is one of the most serious issues confronting mankind today: the dwindling reserve of fossil fuels.
www.giki.edu.pk/asme

The contest will include a race to pit your vehicle against others from around the world in a bid to see which design is the fastest on the track.

Climate Control Challenge (ASHRAE GIKI Chapter)

Climate all over our world varies greatly from sub-zero temperatures to 50C, from little sunlight to extreme sunlight throughout the year and from arid and dry climates to those where it rains daily. According to conservative estimates, 800 million people are dying of hunger and a further 800 million are unsure about the availability of their next meal. With a rising inflation rate, a growing population and ever-increasing unemployment, it is imperative that food be produced on such a large scale that grain prices are reduced and food is made available to people at reasonable and stable prices. An engineering solution is required to tackle this problem and ensure that food production remains unaffected by drought, floods, storms and any other extreme manifestation of climate. Participants must develop a prototype of their proposed solution to controlling the climatic parameters. The solution would have to control the temperature, humidity and light intensity of a large area and keep it constant.

Rapid Design Competition

The twenty first century has brought with it the need of Innovation for survival. Today it is evident that corporations, governments and welfare organizations delve into a sprint for novelty every step of their way. Therefore, the professional engineers of tomorrow are required to be equipped with the fiercest tools to face the challenges of the market. Rapid Design Competition provides the perfect platform for students to exert their aptitude and creativity in a real world problem; simulating all its constraints and targets. More importantly, this endeavor will help prove the talents that they possess at an international podium.

Research Paper
Research in the field of engineering is one of the best ways of increasing ones own knowledge of the field as well as contributing to the overall knowledge base of the engineering community. Participants will have to research on a topic of their own interest and present a paper based on their findings. This module will enable participants to develop and hone the skills needed for being professional researchers as well as giving them an opportunity to hear and discuss what their colleagues from around the world are interested in.

Xploneering Pakistan (SMEP GIKI Chapter)

Pakistan today faces several complications: electricity shortages, natural disaster management and environmental issues. Engineering solutions are required for these issues, both from within Pakistan and abroad. Participating teams will be assigned one problem each. They will propose a solution to the problem. The solutions will be evaluated by government officials and the best solutions will be considered for implementation. The module will allow participants to apply their theoretical knowledge and provide a feasible solution to an engineering problem just as they would in their professional careers.

Modules
HPVC
The module will consist of two major contests, namely Path of Survival and Tour de GIKI. However, to add spice to the mix there will be a bonus surprise round as well. The vehicles combined performance in all three contests will determine the overall winner of HPVC.

Tour de GIKI
The Tour de GIKI will be a timed event in which the vehicle shall have to traverse from one end of the track to the other. As the name suggests, the track will pass through most of the scenic GIKI campus and will include long straight stretches of road, as well as obstacles such as speed breakers, sharp turns, tactical stops, slaloms, and the notorious wet patch. The course will test not only the vehicles capabilities, but will also those of the driver such, such as his reaction time and the ability to process and decide how best to overcome the obstacles within seconds of having to deal with them.

Path of Survival
Those faint of heart, beware! Eight laps around the sloped track encircling the GIKI auditorium, including sharp inclines and uncontrollable sloped corners; this tweak on the traditional lap timed race will challenge the speed and handling of the vehicles, but more than that, it will challenge the endurance of the driver himself. This will be the ultimate test for any man-vehicle team.

RULES
TOUR DE GIKI
Tour de GIKI will take place on GIKI Campus on 21st April'2012 on the track mentioned in the accompanying map and video.

Track
This event will take place on a track 1.35 km in length. The event will be of one lap and no more than two cars will be on track simultaneously.
www.giki.edu.pk/asme

The drivers are supposed to be at a 10 meter distance from the locked vehicles at the start of the event. Assistance by other team members is not allowed in this event. If the vehicle fails to complete the track, the time will be recorded for the last checkpoint. (The checkpoints are mentioned and are the delivery section,180 degree turn and wet zone.) There will be following features on the track for this event:

Features:
A ramp is located near the start line of the track. The dimensions of the cemented ramp are as follows: Height 4 feet 4 inches Length 29 feet 2 inches Width 15 feet 11 inches

Speed breakers are located at different locations which are demonstrated in the accompanying map. The clearance height can be found in the following table: Height(max) 4.5 inches The vehicle is supposed to stop for 5 seconds at the "stop area" mentioned in the map. A "delivery area" is one of the checkpoints on the track where the vehicle is supposed to stop and pick up some parcel. A water hose will spray water at the "wet area" mentioned in the map. A 180 degree turn is to be taken by the vehicle. Minimum Turning Radius: 9 feet 6 inches There will be obstacles in the zig zag form on the track.

Path of Survival
Track
The path of survival will have a track in a circular form. The length of the track will be approximately 0.5 kilometers.

www.giki.edu.pk/asme

The track consists of downhill and uphill areas which are demonstrated in the accompanying pictures. The slope can be also found in the accompanying material. The path of survival shall contain 8 laps. The first lap will be considered as a trial run. The time will be recorded from the second lap. There will be a pit stop on the track, including safety facilities, refreshments and maintenance facilities. Only one vehicle will be on the track at one time. If the vehicle fails to complete the given number of laps, the time will be recorded for the last completed lap.

HPVC (General Rules)

Provision
The participants should try their best to comply with the rules. One of the factors for assessment will be the level of compliance. Deviation from the rules specified here will not necessarily lead to disqualification.

Fairness of Competition
All participating teams will be assured an equal opportunity and a fair competition. Any participating team that, in the reasoned opinion of the judges, seeks to exert an unfair advantage over other competitors will be subject to a penalty in performance points or disqualification from the competition..
Event Scoring: Scoring for each event and the overall scores will be based on a

simple points system. The team with the most points wins the event.

Safety
General: The safety of participants, spectators, and the general public will override all other considerations during the competition. The judges will consider the safety features of the competition courses, as well as those of the competing vehicles, in permitting each event of the competition to begin or continue. Any event of the competition may be delayed, terminated prematurely, or canceled if the Chief Judge, in consultation with ASME and the Judging Team, determines that such action is necessary in the interest of safety.

Performance Safety Requirements:

Each vehicle must demonstrate that it can come to a stop from a speed of approximately 15 miles per hour in a distance of 20 feet or less, can turn within a 25-foot radius and demonstrate stability by traveling for 100 feet in a straight line at a speed of 3-5 mph (fast paced walking speed). Rollover Protection System All vehicles must include a rollover protection system (RPS) that protects all drivers in the vehicle in the event of an accident. Functionally, the RPS must: Absorb sufficient energy in a severe accident to minimize risk of injury Prevent significant body contact with the ground in the event of a fall (vehicle resting on its side) or rollover (vehicle inverted)
www.giki.edu.pk/asme

Provide adequate abrasion resistance to protect against sliding across the ground. In addition, the RPS shall meet the top and side load requirements described below.

Rollover Protection System (RPS)

This is a system to ensure that the driver is not damaged in case of a topple of the vehicle.

Load Cases: The RPS system shall be evaluated based on two specific load cases V a top load representing an accident involving an inverted vehicle and a side load representing a vehicle fallen on its side. In all cases the applied load shall be reacted by constraints on the vehicle seat in an inverted or side position with drivers strapped in and clipped in to the pedals.

Top Load
A load of 600 lb per driver/stoker shall be applied to the top of the roll bar(s), directed downward and aft (towards the rear of the vehicle) at an angle of 12X from the vertical. Note that there may be one roll bar for the driver and another roll bar for the stoker which will result in each RPS having an applied load of 600 lb, or the driver and stoker can both
www.giki.edu.pk/asme

be protected by a single roll bar which will result in the RPS having an applied load of 1200 lb. The roll bar is acceptable if There is no indication of permanent deformation, fracture, or delamination on either the roll bar or the vehicle frame, The maximum elastic deformation is less than 2.0 inches and shall not deform such that contact with the drivers helmet, head or body will occur.

Side Load
A load of 300 lb per driver/stoker shall be applied horizontally to the side of the roll bar at shoulder height. Note that there may be one roll bar for the driver and another roll bar for the stoker which will result in each RPS having an applied load of 300 lb, or the driver and stoker can both be protected by a single roll bar which will result in the RPS having an applied load of 600 lb. The roll bar is acceptable if 1) There is no indication of permanent deformation, fracture or delamination on either the roll bar or the vehicle frame

Safety Harness All drivers of all vehicles in all events will be secured to their vehicle
by safety belts and, where feasible, shoulder harnesses at all times that the vehicle is in motion. Commercially available seat belts and harnesses designed will generally be accepted without test data for the straps and buckles. Test data for attachment points may still be required.

Vehicle Hazards
All surfaces of the vehicle both on the exterior and in the interior in the region of the driver(s) and in the access area must be free from sharp edges and protrusions. G) Clothing and Protective Equipment All participants must wear appropriate clothing and properly fitting helmets with fastened straps that meet Safety The design and construction of their respective vehicles have been carried out with due consideration of occupant and bystander safety. The specified safety tests will have been completed before arrival at the competition. All drivers and stokers will have had no less than 30 minutes of riding experience in their vehicle prior to the competition. Each team shall present a ride log at registration that
www.giki.edu.pk/asme

clearly indicates the operators name, date, duration in hours and minutes, and location for each ride or vehicle test used to satisfy the safety certification requirement.

Safety Inspection and Demonstration

A competition official shall oversee tests of each vehicle's ability to meet the braking, turning and forward motion requirements. Each vehicle shall be visually inspected by the judges to ensure that no hazards exist that are likely to cause harm to the driver, passengers, competitors or pedestrians. Potential hazards include but are not limited to defects or play in the steering system, sharp edges, protruding bolts, open tube ends, and pinch points. In addition, the vehicle must provide the driver with a field of view of at least 90 to right and left of vehicle front and center. During the safety check, teams are responsible for providing start and catch assistants if they are required. The rollover protection system must appear substantial and correctly installed. The tallest driver on the team must sit in the vehicle and demonstrate the roll bar assembly extends beyond the drivers helmeted head and shoulders.

Disqualification of Unsafe Vehicles

The competition officials reserve the right to remove from the competition any vehicle that is judged to be unsafe. This includes consideration of a vehicle's perceived performance under prevailing weather conditions.

Vehicle Design, Analysis, and Construction

The research, analysis, and design of all vehicles entered by a school must be performed solely by current students at that school. Construction of the vehicle may include the assistance of outside vendors where the required capabilities exceed those available at the school. Submittal of Final Entries Final entries must be received by the published entry date and must include the following: The registration fees Identification and certification of eligibility of team members A signed certification of vehicle safety An acknowledgment of understanding of the rules, or requests for clarification or variance A description of the vehicle(Attached to design report) A top level 3-view engineering drawing of the vehicle (Attached to design report)
