All praise is due to Allaah alone; may He send
salutations and exalt the mention oI the seal oI all
Prophets and Messengers. our Prophet Muhammad.
his Iamily and all his companions.
Prayer holds a high rank and great position in
Islaam. It is as important as the head is to the human
body; iust like a body cannot continue to exist
without a head. one`s Islaam can not be established
without prayer.
1he fruits and virtues of praver
It was prescribed in the heavens the night the
Prophet () ascended to the heavens. while the
commands Ior the remaining acts oI worship
were revealed to the Prophet () on earth. This
indicates its great importance. sacredness and
status.
It is the only pillar which is repeated Iive times
each day. and it is never waved except Ior a
woman experiencing her menstrual period or
post partum bleeding.
It is the one oI the most virtuous and most

beloved oI deeds to Allaah as the Prophet ()
said. ".know that the best of vour deeds is the
praver, and onlv a true believer maintains the
state of ablution." (Ahmad)
It is the backbone oI Islam. and brings pleasure
to the eyes oI pious. The Prophet () said. "1he
most important of all matters is Islaam, its
backbone is the praver, and its highest level is
1ihaad for the sake of Allaah." (Ahmad)
It is a prooI oI one`s Islaam. a sign oI belieI. and
it preserves a person`s blood Irom being shed.
Allaah says what means "But if thev repent [bv
rejecting Shirk (polvtheism) and accept Islamic
Monotheismj, perform As-Salaat (Iqaamat-as-
Salaat) and give Zakaat, then thev are vour
brethren in religion." (At-Tawbah. 11)
It is a sign oI honesty and Irees a person Irom
hypocrisy. The Prophet () said. "Whosoever
pravs fortv davs with the congregation,
attending the initial (Allaahu Akbar) of the
praver will be free of two things: Hellfire and
hvpocrisv." (Ahmad)
It is the best issue to be occupied with. the most
proIitable business. and the most likely amongst

all acts oI worship to cause a person to become
humble and submissive. The Prophet () said.
"Praver is the best thing to be occupied with, so
whoever is able to perform much of it then let
him do so." (Ahmad)
It is a command Irom Allaah. an advice oI the
Prophet (). and a Ieature which distinguishes
the people oI Islam and Eeman. Allaah says what
means. "Cuard strictlv (five obligatorv) As-
Salawaat (the pravers). and stand before
Allaah with obedience." (Al-Baqarah. 238)
It elevates the ranks and expiates sins. as the
Prophet () said. "1ell me, if there were a river
in front of one's house in which he would bath
five times a dav, would anv dirt remain on him?
They said: 'No dirt will remain on him.` He
then said. "1hat is the example of the five dailv
obligatorv pravers, for through them Allaah
erases sins." (Bukhaari & Muslim)
It secures one Irom the HellIire. protects against
danger. and makes a person win Paradise. The
Prophet () said. "1he one who pravs before
sunrise (Fajr praver) and before sunset (Asr
praver) will not enter the Hellfire." (Muslim)

It is a sign Ior success and victory and an
indication oI being accepted. Allaah says what
means. "Successful indeed are the believers.
1hose who offer their Salaat (pravers) with all
solemnitv and full submissiveness," (Al-
Muminoon. 1-2) and also. ".and those who
strictlv guard their (five compulsorv
congregational) Salawaat (pravers) (at their
fixed stated hours). 1hese are indeed the
inheritors. Who shall inherit the Firdaus
(Paradise). 1hev shall dwell therein forever."
(Al-Muminoon. 9-11)
It is the Iirst thing Ior which the slave will be
held accountable. The Prophet () said. "1he
first thing for which the slave will be held
accountable for on the dav of Resurrection is
his praver; if it is good (bv performing it
properlv and on time). then the rest of his deeds
will be good, and if it is ruined (bv neglecting
it). then the rest of his deeds will be ruined."
(At-Tabaraani)
It is a provision Ior the way. a comIort Ior the
soul and body. a light Ior the heart. puriIication
Ior the soul and a sign Ior salvation. The Prophet
() said. "O Bilaal! Call the Iqaamah! Bring

us comfort bv it!" (Ahmad & Abu Daawood)
It Irustrates Satan and the disbelievers. The
Prophet () said. "When the son of Aadam
recites a verse which recommends him to
prostrate and he does, Satan starts crving and
savs, :Woe to me, the son of Aadam followed
what he was commanded and he will get
Paradise as a reward, while I was commanded
to prostrate and refused and will enter Hell."
(Muslim)
It is a Iorm oI expressing appreciation and
gratitude. as well as being a treasure Iull oI
magniIication oI Allaah gloriIication and praise
oI Him. When the Prophet () was asked about
the reason behind his excessive prayer. he ()
said. "Shouldn't I be a thankful slave?!"
(Bukhaari & Muslim)
It protects against Iollowing desires. evil sins
and cures Irom sicknesses. as Allaah says what
means. "Jerilv, as-Salaat (the praver) prevents
from al-Fahshaa' (i.e. great sins of everv kind,
unlawful sexual intercourse) and al-Munkar
(i.e. disbelief, polvtheism, and everv kind of evil
wicked deed)" (Al-Ankaboot. 45). The Prophet

() said. "Prav the optional night praver, for it
is the wav of righteous before vou; it brings vou
close to vour Lord, prevents vou from
committing sins, expiates vour sins and cures
vou from sicknesses." (Tirmithi)
1hose who have abandoned the Praver
O you who have abandoned prayers! What is
leIt oI your Islaam aIter you have abandoned them?!
Don`t you know that it is the backbone oI Islaam
and an indication oI your belieI?!
O you who have abandoned prayers! All
creatures prostrate to Allaah except Ior you. while
Allaah says what means "See vou not that whoever
is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth, the
sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees,
ad-Dawaabb [moving (living) creatures, beastsj,
and manv of mankind prostrate themselves to
Allah?! But there are manv (men) on whom the
punishment is justified." (Al-Haii. 18) II you don`t
pray. then you will be among those on whom the
punishment is iustiIied.
O you who have abandoned prayers! Don`t you

know that abandoning it is an act oI disbelieI. as the
Prophet () said. "1he pledge between us and them
is (expressed bv their performance of) the praver;
whosoever abandons it has disbelieved." (Ahmad
O you who have abandoned prayers! Don`t you
know that slackening in it is a Iorm oI hypocrisy?!
Allaah says what means. "Jerilv, the hvpocrites
seek to deceive Allaah, but it is He Who deceives
them. And when thev stand up for the praver, thev
stand with laziness and to be seen of men, and thev
do not remember Allaah but little." (An-Nisaa.
142) Do you not see that the hypocrites during the
time oI the Prophet () would pray. although to be
seen. while you don`t pray at all?!
O you who have abandoned prayers! Don`t you
know that abandoning it causes heedlessness and
hardness oI the heart. as the Prophet () said. "Let
the people stop abandoning the Fridav praver, or
else Allah will surelv seal their hearts, and thev will
become of the heedless." (Muslim)
O you who have abandoned prayers! Don`t you
know that this leads to the punishment in Hell. as
Allaah says what means. " :What has caused vou to
enter Hell?' 1hev will sav: :We were not of those
who used to offer the Salaat (pravers).' " (Al-

Muddaththir. 42-43)
O you who have abandoned prayers! Don`t you
know that abandoning it causes worry. disorder and
a diIIicult liIe. Allaah says what means. "But
whosoever turns awav from Mv Reminder, verilv,
for him is a life of hardship, and We shall raise
him up blind on the Dav of Resurrection. He will
sav: :O mv Lord! Whv have vou raised me up
blind, while I had sight (before).' (Allaah) will sav:
:Like this Our Avaat (proofs, evidences, verses,
lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) came unto vou, but
vou disregarded them, and so this Dav vou will be
neglected (in the Hell-fire, awav from Allaah's
Mercv).' " (Taa Haa. 124-126) What a pity and a
waste! How is it that the years oI your liIe are
passing. and your heart is veiled Irom worshipping
Allaah; how can you depart this liIe and you did not
taste the best oI it?! Indeed the best oI this liIe is
worshipping Allaah. mentioning Him and expressing
your gratitude to Him.
O you who have abandoned prayers! What
remains to be important to you in your religion iI
you give no importance to your prayer? Don`t you
know that one who abandons prayer Iinds it easier to
abandon other acts oI worship?!

Repent. O heedless one. to Allaah . beIore death
comes to you while you have abandoned the prayer.
O vou who have slackened in vour praver!!
What are going to do aIter you learned about the
great virtues oI prayer?
What are going to do aIter knowing the abundant
awards set Ior those who pray?
What are going to do aIter you learned about the
punishment awaiting those who abandon it?
Are you going to continue slighting and neglecting
your prayer?!
Will you still insist to sleep through your prayers or
delay them aIter their prescribed times?!
Dear brother! Where is your ambition?! Where is
your strong determination?! Where is your readiness
Ior Paradise?! Where is your adherence to the
prescribed timings Ior prayers?! Where is your early
arrival Ior the Friday and congregational prayers?!

1he ranks of people in relation to praver
Ibn Al-Qavvim may Allaah have mercy upon him
said. 'There are five ranks of people in relation to
praver.
The First is he who transgresses against himself bv
neglecting parts of Wudoo. its timings. its limits and
pillars. This person will be punished.
The Second is he who maintains its timings and
conditions. but his mind is occupied during praver.
and he will be asked about this.
The Third is he who maintains its timings.
conditions. and all its rights. but spends his efforts
struggling against himself not to become busv
thinking of something else. He is in a state of Jihaad
and praver. He will be forgiven.
The Fourth is he whose heart is fullv consumed bv
the praver. and his main concern is establishing it
properlv and perfectlv. He is in a state of servitude
to his Lord. and he will be rewarded.
The Fifth is he who does as the fourth. but in
addition he sets his heart in the Hands of his Lord.

seeing Him through it. watchful of Him. filled with
love and magnification as if he is witnessing his
Lord. His mind is concentrated on praving. The
difference between this level and the others is like
the distance between the heavens and the earth. This
person is consumed with his Lord in his praver.
bringing him comfort to his eves. This person is
close to his Lord. and his eves will be comforted in
the Hereafter as well bv being close to Him.`
Dear brother! Which one oI these Iive ranks do
you Iit in? Hold yourselI accountable and weigh it
according to your perIormance oI prayer. Ior indeed
the scale oI the prayer does not err!
Magnifving the role of praver
One can magniIy the role oI prayer in his liIe in
many ways:
1. PerIorm it on time.
2. PerIect its conditions and compulsory acts.
3. Rush to perIorm it.
4. Feel sorrow iI any portion was perIormed

improperly. like he who becomes saddened Ior
not perIorming it with the congregation because
he missed out on the twenty seven multiples oI
reward. or iI he was not attentive and submissive
during prayer which is its soul and essence; a
prayer without submission is like a body without
a soul.
An accepted praver
Beloved brother. the Iollowing is some advice to
help you preserve and guard your prayer. and
perIorm it in a proper manner. which is more likely
Ior it to be accepted:
Properly perIorm Wudoo because the Prophet
() said. "Allaah made compulsorv upon
Himself to Admit into Paradise anv Muslim
who properlv performs Wudoo', then pravs two
Rak'ah with attentiveness and submissiveness."
(Muslim)
Leave your house in the state oI Wudoo. Ior the
Prophet () said. "1he one who leaves his
house in a state of Wudoo' to perform an
obligatorv praver will get the reward of

pilgrimage." (Ahmad)
Be keen to perIorm it as soon as its time is due.
Ior the Prophet () said. "1he best of deeds is
performing praver on its due time." (Bukhaari
& Muslim)
Be keen to perIorm it with the congregation. Ior
the Prophet () said. "Praver with the
congregation is twentv seven multiples better
than praving alone." (Bukhaari & Muslim)
Be keen to reach beIore the Imaam utters the
initial Allaahu Akbar. Ior the Prophet () said.
"Whosoever pravs fortv davs with the
congregation, attending the initial (Allaahu
Akbar) of the praver, will be free of two things:
Hellfire and hvpocrisv." (Ahmad)
Be keen to walk to the masiid. Ior the Prophet
() said. "Cive glad tidings to those who walk
to the masjid in the dark of complete light on
the Dav of Resurrection." (Abu Daawood &
Tirmithi).
Be attentive with your heart while perIorming
prayer.

Have your heart attached to the masiid and wait
in the masiid Ior the next prayer as much as you
can. Ior the Prophet () said when he mentioned
the seven whom Allaah will protect under the
shade oI His throne. "A man whose heart is
attached to the masjid." (Bukhaari & Muslim)
Learn the rulings oI prayer and the Sunnah oI the
Prophet ().
PerIorm the regular optional prayers at home. Ior
the Prophet () said. "1he best praver is the one
performed at home, except the obligatorv
praver." (At-Tabaraani)
Beware oI staying up late at night. Ior it will
cause you to miss the Fair prayer.
Beware oI eating. drinking and laughing too
much. because this makes perIorming prayer
heavy on the heart.
Set your alarm Ior Fair. or get someone to call
you to wake up Ior prayer.
Ponder upon the verses read during the prayer.
Read about the Salaf and their ambition and

keenness in guarding their prayers. Ior it will
cause you to Iollow their example.
Think about the Greatness oI Allaah beIore
commencing your prayer.
Always say the recommended supplications and
remembrance aIter prayers. and do not be in a
hurry to leave the masiid beIore Iinishing them.
May Allah make us Irom those who careIully guard
their prayer and are attentive and submissive in it.
and the last oI our supplications is that All Praise is
due to Allah.
