3.8 Read and understand simple factual texts for main ideas, supporting details, sequence, and cause and effect.

Learning outcomes/ Objectives: By the end of this lesson, pupils should be able to; i. ii. Read aloud the text clearly. Arrange at least one paragraph correctly.

Previous knowledge: Pupils could read simple and compound sentences. Teaching aids: Multicultural Malaysia picture, pictures of festivals in Malaysia, The elements of Malaysian cultures sheets, English Year 4 textbook, sentence scripts, vocabulary cards Moral value: We need to respect other peoples festivals and cultures. Educational Emphasis/ thinking skill(s): 1. Constructivism pupils build on new knowledge based on existing schema about festivals and cultures in Malaysia. 2. Living in harmony, unity and tolerance. Stage/time Stage 1 Set Induction (5 minutes) Content Teaching aids: Multicultural Malaysia picture The elements of Malaysian cultures sheets Teaching/ learning 1. Teacher pastes Multicultural Malaysia picture on the whiteboard. 2. Teacher explains that Malaysia is consisted of different races. 3. Teacher distributes The elements of Malaysian cultures sheets to the pupils. Rationale To generate pupils interest on the lesson.

4. Teacher asks pupils on the elements of Malaysia cultures. 5. Teacher explains that they are going to focus on the festivals in Malaysia for the lesson. Teaching aids: Pictures of Pre-reading festivals in Malaysia (15 minutes) - Wesak Day - Hari Raya Puasa - Hari Gawai - Thaipusam Stage 2 1. Teacher explains that there are many festivals in Malaysia. 2. Teacher asks pupils on the festivals that they have known. 3. Teacher writes down the festivals on the whiteboard. 4. Teacher pastes the pictures of festivals in Malaysia. 5. Teacher asks pupils on what they think the festivals are. English Year 4 6. Teacher writes the names of the textbook festival below the pictures. 7. Teacher asks pupils to open to Vocabulary cards page 137 of the English Year 4 - blowpipe textbook in which there is text of - festival - harvest festival festivals in Malaysia. - temple 8. Teacher introduces some difficult - honour words to the pupils. - fasting 9. Teacher pastes the vocabulary cards on the whiteboard. 10. Teacher explains the meanings of the words. 1. Teacher asks pupils to read the text at page 133 of the English Year 4 textbook silently. 2. Teacher reads aloud the introduction text and asks pupils to listen carefully. 3. Teacher reads aloud the first paragraph about Hari Gawai and asks pupils to listen carefully. 4. Teacher asks pupils to read aloud the first paragraph together. 5. Teacher asks for volunteers to read aloud the next paragraphs. Teacher might call out pupils names.

Teacher explains that in arranging the sentences, pupils need to identify the main idea and the supporting details first. 4. Teacher asks pupils to look at the first paragraph example. 5. Teacher asks pupils to identify the main ideas and the supporting details in second, third, and forth paragraphs. 6. Teacher asks for volunteers to arrange the sentences on the whiteboard. 7. Teacher asks pupils to write the right sentences in their exercise books. 1. Teacher asks feedback from pupils on the lesson; What have you learnt today? 2. Teacher gives reflection on the lesson. Today, we have learnt about festivals in Malaysia. So, we need to respect other peoples festivals and cultures.
