Important Resume Guidelines Essential items in your resume:

Make sure that your resume: Is concise! If your reader cannot figure out who you are within 30 seconds, your resume might be trash canned. Provides as much relevant information as possible, particularly at the upper half of the page. o The resumes upper-half of the page should Introduce your qualification level Portray the business value that your skills can provide. Highlights your achievements, including academic and professional. Club related information that is career-relevant should be included in the Education section. o Social activities should be listed in Additional Information Section.

Quantifies your accomplishments whenever possible; numbers are powerful! Identifies transferable skills and achievements from one job to the next. The reader should be able to quickly identify the pattern in which each job is presented.

Follow these resume style rules

Grammar and punctuation matter! All past-tense verbs should include endings(i.e. initiated, implemented) Add a period with one space at end of each phrase Spell Web site, not web site Spell Internet, not internet Plural of analysis is analyses Make sure you use commas correctly: EX: apples, oranges and bananas - OR - apples, oranges, and bananas Italicize magna cum laude, summa cum laude and cum laude Frequently misspelled words detract from your resume quality! For example, the words below are often misspelled: Led (not lead) Liaison Entrepreneurial PowerPoint Duke and Fuqua information should be standardized and correct ! Master of Business Administration (not Masters in Business Administration) Concentration in Health Sector Management (not Health Services Management) Duke University comes first, followed by The Fuqua School of Business Remember the definite article in front of Fuqua: The Fuqua School of Business, not Fuqua School of Business) Always use the Duke e-mail address on your resume, as it tangibly brands you as a member of this community.

Write precise and compelling Accomplishments Statements

When most people write their resumes, they think in terms of what they did in a job. They focus on tasks and responsibilities. However, they dont tell recruiters what they want to know how your past performance predicts your future behavior, or how your combined skills and experiences helped you succeed. Below are examples of the same task expressed in three very different ways: ordinary, better and extraordinary. Ordinary example Assisted U.S. and European clients in negotiating the acquisition of Chinese companies. This seems like an important task, but it doesnt really tell a recruiter anything about the person applying for the job. Was the candidate successful in this role? Better example Assisted U.S. and European multinational clients in successfully negotiating the acquisition of more than 10 Chinese companies. This is better. It includes some descriptive and quantitative qualifiers such as successfully and more than 10 as an indication of scope of the responsibility as well as relative performance. However, it still lacks a strong result. Listing results provides evidence to the recruiter that this candidate was successful in this position. Extraordinary example Assisted U.S. and European multinational clients in successfully negotiating the acquisition of more than 10 Chinese companies with a combined value in excess of $200 million. This bullet describes and quantifies the results. This tells the recruiter that not only can this person perform this task but that this candidate has demonstrated the ability to be successful in this task.

Always use Action Verbs in your resume Action verbs are concise, dynamic and indicate high-energy initiative and creative action. They are used to maximize skills and qualifications highlighted in your resume.
