The voiceless alveolar fricative phoneme is present in many spoken languages. This is common in many languages, however, not all languages possess. In the Spanish language alphabet, appears in the graphs S and s. The phonologies of many variants of the Spanish pronounce this phoneme instead of voiceless dental fricative ("z" or Castilian Spanish).

In the International Phonetic Alphabet, the letter used to represent this phoneme is the spelling s, which comes from the Latin alphabet.

Characteristics
