W h e n a b o d y m o v e s t h r o u g h a frictionless fluid its i n e r t i a is a p p a r e n t l y modified in v a r i o u s ways. I n t h e case of rectilinear m o t i o n t h e effect is e q u i v a l e n t to increasing t h e m a s s of t h e b o d y b y k t i m e s t h e m a s s of t h e fluid which i t displaces, where k is a c e r t a i n c o n s t a n t d e p e n d i n g on t h e direction of m o t i o n relative to t h e body.
