Slovenian Pantheon
Carantanian Slovenian pantheon reflects a system of pre-christian beliefs in the area of middle eastern Europe between the Adriatic Sea and north of the Alps, inhabited by Slovenian people today. These beliefs have been traced and confirmed by chroniclers of northern middle Europe, whom christianity reached much later, and where the temples still stood in the 12th century. Discovery of the pre-Christian life of Carantanians reveals a culture and a spiritual world that is unique. In it we find no trace of the classical pantheon, that is to say, about rivalries and quarrels of gods, jealousy, revenge, etc., as we find in Greek, Roman and Germanic mythology. Rather than divine beings, the laws in Carantanian pantheon are symbols of universe, planet and environment, in which Slovenian man lived his life and had even then been assured of pax Dei. The old beliefs turned into new, into Christian faith, the experience of belief remained. Carantanian Slovenian pantheon is in its entirety separate and not consistent with deities of the Slavic (Russian) pantheon. Some of the deep experience and spirituality, reflected in the old faith, to all that was later transposed into Slovenian Christianity. The ethnologist Niko Kuret defines all this spiritual heritage, not without cause, as the festive year of Slovenes, where the observance of ancient traditions, customs, rituals continues to the present.
