1What is MIS? How it is useful to you as a 1.MBA Student & 2.MIS Manager?

A computer system designed to help managers plan and direct business and organizational operations.A management information system (MIS) is a subset of the overall internal controls of a business covering the application of people, documents, technologies, and procedures by management accountants to solve business problems such as costing a product, service or a business-wide strategy. Management information systems are distinct from regular information systems in that they are used to analyze other information systems applied in operational activities in the organization. Academically, the term is commonly used to refer to the group of information management methods tied to the automation or support of human decision making, e.g. Decision Support Systems, Expert systems, and Executive information systems.[ Computer-based or manual system that transforms data into information useful in the support of decision making. MIS can be classified as performing three functions: (1) To generate reports-for example, financial statements, inventory status reports, or performance reports needed for routine or non-routine purposes. (2) To answer what-if questions asked by management. For example, questions such as "What would happen to cash flow if the company changes its credit term for its customers?" can be answered by MIS. This type of MIS can be called Simulation. (3) To support decision making. This type of MIS is appropriately called Decision Support System (DSS). DSS attempts to integrate the decision maker, the data base, and the quantitative models being used.
The overall purpose of MIS is to provide profitability and related information to help managers and staff understand business performance and plan its future direction. IMPORTANCE OF MIS: 1. MIS is always management oriented and keeps in view every level of management and gets the desired information. 2. Integrated - refers to how diff components(sub systems) are actually tied up together. eg: diff departments of organization linked together. 3. Useful for planning - as every organization makes log-term and short-term plans with the help of information like sales & production, capital investments, stocks etc management can easily plan..

4. Effective MIS helps the management to know deviations of actual performance from pre-set targets and control things. 5. its important for increasing efficiency. 6.MIS provides updated results of various departments to management. 7.MIS is highly computerized so it provides accurate results. 8.MIS adds to the intelligence, alertness, awareness of managers by providing them information in the form of progress and review reports of an ongoing activity. 9.Helps managers in decision- making.

2How Pivot Table is useful to MIS Manager? Explain this by using a Hypothetical Database of your choice. pivot-table tools can automatically sort, count, and total the data stored in one table or spreadsheet and create a second table (called a "pivot table") displaying the summarized data. Pivot tables are also useful for quickly creating cross tabs. The user sets up and changes the summary's structure by dragging and dropping fields graphically. This "rotation" or pivoting of the summary table gives the concept its name. basically they allow us to pivot our data via drag-and-drop to produce meaningful information. This makes Pivot Tables interactive in that once the table is complete we can very easily see what effect moving (or pivoting) our data has on our information.
What would we use them for ?- We would use a Pivot Table to produce meaningful information from a table of information. Imagine you have a table of data that contains names, addresses, ages, occupations, phone numbers, postcodes etc. With a Pivot Table we could very easily and quickly find out:

How many people have the same names.

How many postcodes are the same.

A count of a particular occupation.

See only people that match a particular occupation.

Find out the addresses of people that match a

postcode In fact the list can go on and on! What is the advantage ? - Perhaps the biggest advantage to using Pivot Tables is the fact that we can generate and extract meaningful information from a large table of information within a matter of minutes. Or perhaps it is because they will not use up a lot of memory from your PC. In a lot of cases we could get the same results from a table of data by using Excels built in functions, but this would take more time and use far more memory. On top of this, if we wanted some new information we can simply drag-and-drop (pivot). We can also opt to have our information update each time we open the Workbook and/or by clicking refresh.

3What are the operations normally performed on Database?

4Using the Database given below can you generate MIS Question that can be asked on it? Get the answers manually.

5Take Functional Area of your choice. Generate Management Questions that can be asked on it. What fields do we include in Database?

6How Internet helps Management to get MIS Information quickly?

7Which of the Microsoft Office suite will you prefer for creating MIS for your college library?

8What are the MIS Systems you need to deploy for management colleges?

Library Management System (LMS) is an integrated software solution of automated Library functions. LMS functions support activities such as search based on Author, Title or ISBN code. This software is developed to reduce the manual labour of working staff of any Library. In this

system we can add or update the records of books. It has been designed to automate , manage and look after the over-all processing of even very large Library. The availability of books and

location of books. Providing membership details , sending emails/SMS for due date Intimations. Managing accounts effective way based on student or faculty. Providing different reports etc.
Accounting management information systems: All accounting reports are shared by all levels of accounting managers. Financial management information systems: The financial management information system provides financial information to all financial managers within an organization including the chief financial officer. The chief financial officer analyzes historical and current financial activity, projects future financial needs, and monitors and controls the use of funds over time using the information developed by the MIS department.

Human resources management information systems: Human resources management information systems are concerned with activities related to workers, managers, and other individuals employed by the organization. Because the personnel function relates to all other areas in business, the human resources management information system plays a valuable role in ensuring organizational success. Activities performed by the human resources management information systems include, work-force analysis and planning, hiring, training, and job assignments.
