2 Michigan Economic Development Corporation Facilitates Growth

By: Jane Whittington The Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) is hard at work throughout the state and beyond to build Michigans economic well-being. A state-wide, public and private partnership which serves as Michigans front line agency for economic and business growth, job creation, tourism, film incentives and grants to arts and cultural organization, MEDC offers business assistance and capital programs for business recruitment, retention and growth, links strategic partnerships, supports entrepreneurs and assists with community development. The agency, founded in 1999, developed and continues to manage the Pure Michigan marketing program. Before 1999, this effort was spearheaded by the Michigan Jobs Commission, formed in 1993, which worked with businesses in Michigan with the goal of creating more jobs and improving the economy. The reorganization creating the MEDC would, according to then Governor John Engler, allow Michigan citizens to benefit from our successful, award-winning economic development programs by streamlining functions and providing greater consolidation. According to Michael A. Finney, MEDC President and CEO, At the time of the MEDCs formation, the state entered into formal agreements for economic development with local units of government., which allowed them to appoint representatives to the MEDC Board, which evaluates the performance of the MEDC and reviews the acts of its Executive Committee. Finney says, The MEDC is a very different economic driver today with a new focus on doing a better job supporting our states new and exciting businesses by practicing economic gardening, which is basically supporting and growing businesses within the state and doing so without extensive tax credits that have been historically utilized to attract businesses from outside Michigan. Nurturing existing businesses not only creates more and better jobsits done without cost to the taxpayers. He continues, We still look for new national and global business investment opportunities, but our day-to-day focus is on making it easier for Michigans business base to find new paths to prosperity. The Michigan Business Development Program provides grants, loans and other economic assistance of up to $10 million to businesses creating qualified new jobs and making investments in Michigan. Pure Michigan Business Central is a more than $8 billion, multi-year incentive to help Michigan companies grow. Finney says, This program helps companies find new ways to raise capital, gain access to business services and connect with each other with businessto-business procurement opportunities. He continues, Creating an environment for Michigans entrepreneurial companies to grow and prosper is an important piece of our strategy. We have an entrepreneurial ecosystem in place that ensures innovators, start-ups and early-stage companies have access to a network of public and private resources. Throughout the state, the MEDC has 323 employees, three of whom are located in Grand Rapids. Two of the GR employees are defense industry business development managers, and one is an international trade development manager. The MEDC is aligned with the Workforce Development Agency with 194 employees including two in Grand Rapids. Finney says, We partner with regional and local economic developers, elected officials, university leaders, businesses, workers, etc. to foster economic growth and create the kind of places where people want to locate, invest and expand. Michigans economy grew last year 2.3 percent, ranking as the sixth best growth in the US. Michigan led among Great Lake states with the most rapid economic expansion. In addition, Comericas most recent Economic Activity Index, July 2012, showed Michigans economic activity at a 10-year high. Finney also reports, The MoneyTree Report from PriceWaterhouseCoopers shows venture capital investment in Michigan companies during the third quarter reached its highest level in 12 years. The $186 million invested here so far this year is more than double what was invested last year. He says, Some examples of companies doing exciting things in Grand Rapids recently include a facility for ArcticAx US, a molecular diagnostic company that commercializes genetic markers for the testing of diseases, and an expansion of Amways nutritional products division. Were all familiar with the Pure Michigan campaign, started in 2006, which has highlighted Michigan as a tourist destination. In 2010, spending by out-of-state visitors increased 21 percent and surpassed that of Michigan residents for the first time. Travel and tourism generated $17.2 billion in Michigan last year and helped created over 150.000 jobs. Pure Michigan has won a number of awards, including being given the Best State Tourism Radio Advertising Award for four years in a row. Finney says, Anytime a manufacturer makes something in Michigan, thats a success. Anytime a small business opens its doors, thats a success. Anytime an unemployed worker finds a new job, thats a success. Manufacturing is a big part of Michigan, but we work to help businesses in any sector where we see an opportunity for growth whether its automotive, IT, food processing, medical devices or furniture. And with our new improved business climate, which included replacing the unpopular and unfair Michigan Business Tax with a flat 6 percent rate on federal taxable income for C-corporations, we have removed a major barrier to growth and are now fueling creativity, innovation and business startups and expansions more than ever before. 4 Personal Wealth Management

By: Jane Whittington In volatile economic times, financial management can be a daunting prospect. ly been volatile. It has taken nerves of steel to watch the markets and other financial markers fluctuate, often up, then down, and then up again for no apparent reason. Suze Orman said, In all realms of life, it takes courage to stretch your limits, express your power and fulfill your potential. Its no different in the financial realm. Fortunately, there are experts who are ready, willing and able to help us maximize our economic potential, even in sometimes trying times. Both Mosaic Wealth Management and Grand Wealth Management have years of experience and the expertise to make your money work for you. Jeffrey Williams, President of Grand Wealth Management, and Carol Dehen, Managing Director and Ted Vogt, Managing Director/CIO, both of Mosaic Wealth Management, recently answered questions about their firms and the work they do. According to Williams, Grand Wealth Management was founded in 2004 as an independent, fee-only wealth management firm. We have one location in downtown Grand Rapids and are 100 percent employee-owned. We currently have five employees-two professionals and three associates. All Grand Wealth Management employees have years of experience in the financial services industry. Williams spent 18 years in public accounting with Ernst & Young prior to founding his business. Ellie Winter Bolline spent 14 years in the banking industry and nine years at Ernst & Young. The three associates also have prior experience in financial services. Both Bolline and Williams hold the Certifed Financial Planner (CFP) designation. Williams also holds designations as a Certified Investment Management Analyst (CIMA), an Accredited Investment Fiduciary (AIF) and a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Dehen of Mosaic Wealth Management says, We formed Mosaic Wealth Management in 2007. Our custody services are provided by LPL Financial member FINRA/SIPC. We have a combined 50 plus years of experience in financial services. We currently have one location in Grand Rapids but are seeking to partner with the right people and expand our firm into other areas of West Michigan. Mosaics Vogt began his career in 1982 and, during his tenure at Morgan Stanley, earned the designation of Wealth Advisor, Senior Consultant, and Investment Consulting Services and served as the Branch Manager for 11 years. He holds his Series 7 (General Securities Representative), Series 63 (Uniform Securities Agent), Series 65 (Uniform Investment Advisor), Series 24 (Registered Principal), Series 8 (General Supervisory) as well as life insurance and annuities licenses through LPL Financial. He was named to the list of Outstanding Financial Advisors by Registered Rep Magazine. Mosaics Dehen began her career in financial services in 1986. She holds her Series 7, Series 31 (Managed Futures), Series 63 and Series 65 as well as Life Insurance and Variable Annuity licenses through LPL Financial. She is a member of the Grand Rapids Economic Club, CFA West Michigan Society and serves as Treasurer of the Grandville Education Foundation. According to Williams of Grand Wealth Management, Our core service is wealth management, including investment management and financial planning. We believe that the most effective approach to financial management integrates these two disciplines. We are a fee-only firm, which means that our only compensation comes from our clients and not from any other individual or entity. We dont sell any commissioned products, nor do we accept commissions in any form, including fees from mutual fund companies whose funds we recommend. Our services are best suited to those with $1million or more in investment assets or those who plan to reach that level in the near future. By limiting the number of clients, we can give each our highest level of service. He continues, We also provide our services to institutional investors, including pension, profit sharing and 401(k) plans, private foundations and corporate accounts. Mosaics Vogt says, Our mission is to provide clients with comprehensive financial services and investment management with the highest degree of integrity, trust and service. We work toward that goal through a well-defined investment plan, along with ongoing monitoring of the plans performance and our clients personal objectives. He continues, We have developed a successful business working with individuals, business owners, endowments, trusts, 401(k) and pension plans. Prior to the formation of Mosaic Wealth Management, we (Vogt and Dehen) spent 20 years elsewhere assisting high networth individuals in planning for and achieving their financial goals by focusing on tax management and asset allocation using managed portfolios as well as equity and fixed income vehicles. Williams says that his business generally starts working with clients at a transition point-retirement or the years leading up to retirement. He says, A common circumstance is a high income family whose focus has been on paying down their mortgage and educating their children. They reach a point where they need to focus on retirement, saving as much as possible and determining when they can retire comfortably. Most of our clients have some connection to the business community; they are professionals, business owners, corporate executives or retirees form one of these professions. Speaking of the economic downturn experienced in the United States over the past few years, Williams says, Our advice has not changed as a result of the recession. It remains the same: have a written plan, invest for the long term and stay invested in spite of the short-term ups and downs of the stock market. Dehen agrees, Our goal has always been to assist clients in achieving a competitive rate of return within their personal risk parameters. Those with a higher tolerance for risk may be rewarded with a greater return over time. Over the past decade and the unprecedented market declines we experienced, we have seen many clients become more conservative. Capital preservation has become more important and many have become willing to trade lower returns for lower levels of risk. Williams adds, The stock market have done remarkably well over the past three years, and our clients have benefitted by sticking with their investment plans. Dehen says, The markets have improved considerably and, over time, we believe equities still offer a great opportunity for growth and income. Williams says, Many investors are easily persuaded that successful investing requires constant attention to current events and frequent adjustment of their stock portfolio. We suspect that many investors not only failed to achieve the market rate of return over the past three years, but would be surprised to learn how well stock prices have done during that period. We dont believe that anyone can predict what the market will do in the short term. We advise our clients to focus on the things they can control, such as managing their spending, paying down debt, saving as much as they can and investing wisely for the long term. Mosaic Wealth Managements Vogt says, Our company motto is Providing Midwest Values with a Global Perspective. We will work toward this goal through a well-defined investment plan, along with ongoing monitoring of the plans performance. Both agencies agree that unwavering integrity and exceptional service are key. Despite the vagaries of the economic landscape, these values do not change. SBA Loan Volume Sets Record in Michigan

Detroit - The Michigan District Office is pleased to announce that 2,075 loans for a total of $944 million were made in fiscal 2012. Although the total number of loans decreased from fiscal 2011, the dollar value increased by $10 million, setting a new record in Michigan. The Michigan District Office guaranteed 1,742 loans under its flagship 7(a) loan guarantee program in fiscal 2012, for a total of $547 million. This was 16% lower than the prior year, primarily due to the end of American Recovery Act funding. However, SBA 7(a) dollar volume was the second highest ever in Michigan. The 7(a) loan guaranty program provides a 50% to 90% guaranty to a financial institution, giving more small businesses access to much needed capital to fund working capital, machinery and equipment, or purchase real estate. Lenders throughout the state have found that SBA loan programs are an important asset in helping small business clients, said Gerald Moore, SBA Michigan District Director. Driving the record setting dollar value in fiscal 2012 was the SBA 504 loan program with 333 loans totaling over $176 million, another record setting amount. These loans leveraged another $221 million in financing for a total of more than $397 million in financing for Michigan businesses through the 504 program. This program helped small businesses position themselves for expansion and job creation, said Moore. The dollar value was 62% higher compared to the prior year. The increase in the 504 loan volume was driven by a temporary program that allowed for the refinancing of existing debt. The authority for the refinancing program expired at the end of September, 2012. Loans were made in 74 out of 83 counties in Michigan by more than 135 lenders demonstrating widespread participation in SBA loan programs throughout the state.

8 Tetra Discovery Partners Received Major NIH Award to Develop New Alzheimers Drug
Grand Rapids Tetra Discovery Partners LLC, a leader in the design of new treatments for major neurological conditions based on PDE4 modulation in the brain, today announced it has been awarded a five-year cooperative agreement by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The award will support Tetras efforts to develop a new drug to treat mild cognitive impairment, which is typically associated with aging and often precedes and accompanies Alzheimers disease. Tetras award includes up to $1.5 million in direct funding and access to millions of additional dollars worth of contracted research services; the Company estimates that the total value of the NIH award to be worth at least $10 million over the projects anticipated five-year period. The award was made through the Blueprint Neurotherapeutics Network (BPN), a recently launched NIH initiative involving the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and the National Institute of Aging. Under the terms of its cooperative agreement with NIH, Tetra will retain the intellectual property related to its research and be responsible for the commercialization of the new drug. We are delighted that Tetra Discovery Partners has been accepted into NIHs highly selective Blueprint Neurotherapeutics Network, said Mark Gurney, Ph.D., Tetras founder and president. We expect that the funding and access to industry resources provided by the BPN will help support the significant acceleration of Tetras work, which holds real promise for the millions of individuals and families contending with agerelated cognitive decline and the ravages of Alzheimers. Tetras research focuses on designing drugs that inhibit phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4), a key enzyme in the brain that controls the biochemical process of memory. The compounds designed by Tetra act like a type of molecular glue, closing a lid over the PDE4 catalytic site. This innovative approach to preventing the enzyme from functioning has been shown to improve efficacy and tolerability over previous compounds that simply inhibit the enzyme altogether. Tetras NIH-funded work will focus on developing a treatment for mild cognitive impairment (MCI), which includes memory difficulties as well as other changes in thinking skills and sequencing tasks. The subtle cognitive decline associated with MCI may also precede the development of Alzheimers disease, often by many years, and can affect an individuals ability to work, hold a job and cope with daily activities. Launched in 2011, the BPN program has been fostered by NIH Director Francis S. Collins, with support from the Institutes other directors, as part of the agencys heightened emphasis on translational medicine. It marks a first-ofits-kind collaboration for NIH enabling award recipients to leverage resources across 15 agency institutes and centers, as well as the expertise of outside consultants and contractors and involves making a total of $50 million in funding available to selected academic and industry-based researchers. Tetra is the first award recipient to be notified in the programs second year and one of only a few non-academic teams accepted to date. Key members of the project team led by Tetra include Alex Burgin, Ph.D., chief scientific officer of Emerald Bio( embios.com) and Professor James M. ODonnell, assistant dean for research, and Dr. Han-ting Zhang of West Virginia University. Dr. Gurney noted: The BPN will become a natural complement to Tetras lean business structure, which is defined by minimal staff, a network of expert outside collaborators as exemplified by the key contributions of Alex, James and Han-Ting, as well as the structural biology scientific team at Emerald , and a combination of private and public funding sources. Importantly, our work has been facilitated by the incubator services of the West Michigan Science & Technology Initiative (www.wmsti.org), which include affordable access to customized lab space, leading-edge instrumentation and proximity to world-class healthcare, research and education institutions such as Grand Valley State Universitys Cell and Molecular Biology Department. This model has contributed to Tetras early success, enabling us to employ minimal capital by providing us with the ability to spend virtually every dollar on strategic projects vs. infrastructure and equipment. If its NIH-funded project proceeds as the Company anticipates, Tetra plans to begin Phase I clinical studies in as soon as three to four years. We believe there is an important market opportunity for new treatment approaches addressing cognitive decline, added Dr. Gurney. Current global sales of the five approved Alzheimers drugs are estimated at $4 billion annually. According to the Alzheimers Association, these drugs are effective for less than one year in about half of patients who take them, and their utility wanes as the disease becomes more severe. In addition, the drugs currently approved to treat cognitive decline in Alzheimers do not help individuals with MCI, which is a significantly larger patient population. Tetra is also exploring the ability of its compounds to restore cognitive function in patients who have suffered traumatic brain injury (TBI). TBI frequently involves the front of the brain, which is important for functions such as remembering and sequencing tasks.

12 Dow Chemical to shut down 20 Factories, despite small gains in the Industrial Coating Market.
By: Jeremy Martin Midland-In October, Midland based Dow Chemical Company announced that it will be closing upwards of 20 factories world-wide. The announcement came on the heels of the companys quarterly earnings report which showcased a decreasing profit margin across the companys many product lines. Dow had initially intended to release its third quarter stock report on October 24th, was late in filing its official release following a statistical leak which took place a week in advance. In the end Dows revenues plummeted to $13,637 million for the quarter, down 9.7% from this time last year. Dows results this quarter demonstrate the acceleration and delivery of our cost reduction actions, Andrew Liveris, company chairman and CEO said in a statement. We focused on execution and intervened to protect our prioritized growth path The intervention includes; management decision to eliminate about 2,400 jobs and close roughly 20 manufacturing plants. Michigan Chronicle Online also reported that The company also plans to slash capital spending and investments. It expects that will save an additional $500 million. Dow anticipates it will save $2.5 billion, including other cost-cutting measures. Some of the blame can be traced to slipping prices in the Industrial Coatings market. Despite increasing its volume by 1% during the quarter, the division saw a pricing decrease of nearly 10% worldwide. As Zacks Equity Research reported on October 24th Sales fell in the Dow Coating Materials business as lower price more than offset volume gains driven by higher demand in Industrial Coatings. On a positive note, Dow saw demand raise for industrial coating products such as traffic paint and paper coating applications; however those products did not raise enough capital to offset losses in other parts of the company. For example, according to Michigan Chronicle Online Weak pricing in epoxy-based products continued to hamper sales and profitability. Dow Building and Construction experienced volume declines as a result of actions taken within the quarter to improve profitability, particularly in Europe The reality is we are operating in a slow-growth environment in the nearterm and, while these actions are difficult, they demonstrate our resolve to tightly manage operations particularly in Europe and mitigate the impact of current market dynamics, Liveris said. Liveris did however explain that Dows financial and business related stratagies were fully intact and that the company was optimistic about its future in the marketplace. our long-term growth fundamentals are strong, Liveris said. Moving forward, Dow is squarely focused on driving cost efficiencies, generating cash and earnings growth.

13 Manufacturing CEOs Retain Optimism About Business in 2013

Las Vegas, NV - Same as it ever was is not only a lyric by The Talking Heads, it also describes the outlook for the fabricating and manufacturing sector in 2013. A group of CEOs who will be featured at a roundtable at the FABTECH exposition remain optimistic that growth experienced by many manufacturers since 2010 will continue for a third year in a row. The roundtable is part of the special events planned for FABTECH 2012, November 12 14 in Las Vegas. The CEOs include Jerry Ward, Vice President of Metcam, Inc.; Rick Taylor, President and CEO of Jay Industries; Gregg Simpson, President of Ohio Laser; Shivie Dhillon, President of SunDial Powder Coatings and Patrick Thompson, President of Trans-Matic Manufacturing. The roundtable featuring these industry leaders, entitled State of the Industry: Manufacturers Executive Outlook, will take place the first day of the show at 12:30 p.m. Dr. Chris Kuehl, Economic Analyst for the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association, International, will moderate the panel. The session is free and open to all attendees. Each CEO participating in the roundtable represents a business that specializes in a different technology and serves a different customer base. This will ensure a variety of opinions during the roundtable discussion that mirrors the breadth of opinions found among the 25,000 attendees at FABTECH. The CEOs will discuss and debate several factors that impact business for manufacturers: energy costs, raw materials, regulations, areas of growth and decline, exports, uncertainty, skilledlabor issues and capital investments. The CEO roundtable will have something for everyone - whether youre in the metal forming, fabricating, welding or finishing industries, or involved in some other sector of manufacturing, said John Catalano, the shows co-manager. These CEOs are all distinguished leaders and bring varied perspectives on manufacturing. This makes the roundtable a cant miss event at FABTECH. In pre-show interviews, some CEOs agreed that materials supply will continue to be unpredictable, making it challenging to plan. For others, energy costs are a greater concern. However, despite this uncertainty, the CEOs all agreed that their companies expect to continue the growth that they have experienced in the last two years. Some of the CEOs predicted strong growth of 20% or more, while others are expecting slow, but steady growth in the coming year or two. FABTECH is expected to attract more than 25,000 manufacturers to the Las Vegas Convention Center to view 1,100 exhibits, including live equipment demonstrations covering more than 400,000 net square feet of floor space. In the shops we do more meals, but everything we do offer in the stores, we also offer with the catering, Del Vacchio said. But we talk to the customers, see what they want and go from there. Big or small orders, Water Street initially plans to deliver within a 12.5 mile radius of Kalamazoo, but the company may extend the service farther afield if demand is deemed high enough. Large business functions, university events and weddings are all easily catered by Water Street, but Del Vacchio said size doesnt matter so long as the order goes in, on average, 48 hours prior to the event. We recommend 48 hours but to be honest I have put them together in 24 hours. We do make everything fresh from scratch so it will always have to depend on how quickly you will need it, but we try to fulfill any order that comes through, Del Vacchio said. There is a $100 minimum on catering purchase and Water Street charges and additional $20 delivery fee; although customers do have the option of picking up their orders direct from the kitchen. Del Vacchio said that the company hopes to hire additional employees in the near future in order to help with event site responsibilities such as set, serving and clean up. As business expands we hope to hire more. Weve been hiring in the kitchen as well because weve been producing a lot more food, Del Vacchio said. Its a really exciting time for Water Street; were doing a lot of events and expanding within the community.

19 Holiday Happenings
By Jane Whittington As if the winter holidays werent busy enough with shopping for gifts, cooking for family parties, planning festive get-togethers and having a heart-toheart talk with Santa, Grand Rapids is full of special things to do, places to go and things to see. Trying to work them into the schedule may be a challenge, but making that extra effort is worth it. After all, Christmas (December 25) and Chanukah (December 8-16) come but once a year. Celebrate! There are many arts and crafts shows throughout the holiday season. Here are just a few: The Grand Rapids Junior League holds their annual Beneath the Wreath arts and crafts spectacular on November 3 and 4. Whether youre looking for holiday decorations or the perfect gift, youll find it there, and the money you spend will go to a good cause. The event will be at the Cultural Center at St. Nicholas. On November 6, the Spectrum Golden Rule Guild opens up their Holiday Market Sale. All things Christmassy and interesting gift options for the whole family makes this an event not to be missed. This is at Spectrum Health (Butterworth). On November 10, the Meijer Gardens Holiday Gift Show will feature local artists and craftspeople selling their wares. November 26 is the day for the NCO Club Auxiliary Craft Show to be held at the National Guard Armory. West Catholics Christmas Arts and Crafts Fair will happen on December 3. Again, a fine time to shop, enjoy the atmosphere and soak up the holiday spirit. Its at West Catholic High School. Have you heard? Santa Claus is coming to town at the Grand Rapids Jaycees Santa Parade on November 17 at 9:00 AM. The Farmers Market remains open through December 22 and offers all the makings for holiday decorations, spectacular meals and fresh, local goodness. On Sundays, an Artists Market fills up the booths with unique gifts galore. Its a great place to look for oneof-a-kind presents that will please even the most Scrooge-like recipient on your gift list. Keenly anticipated each year is the Meijer Gardens annual Holiday Celebrations Around the World. From November 20 through January 6, the halls will be decked with all things festive. Holiday customs from throughout the world and across the spectrum of religious beliefs and cultural diversity will be celebrated. There are horsedrawn carriage rides, caroling and a train exhibit which travels through three separate indoor gardens. On November 30 and December 1, Calvin College will present Handels Messiah, a Christmas tradition beloved for centuries. On December 2, the Festival of Lessons and Carols will fill the sanctuary of LaGrave Avenue Christian Reformed Church. On December 7, the TransSiberian Orchestra brings their own special brand of holiday music to the stage of the Van Andel Arena. Theyll be debuting the rock opera, The Lost Christmas Eve. To get in the Christmas spirit, take the family to Dickens A Christmas Carol, playing at the GR Civic Theatre from November 16 through December 16. As the children wait for the Big Day to arrive, the whole family can chill with Shrek, presented by the Forest Hills Fine Arts Center on December 23. And, to forestall that afterChristmas letdown, take the kids to Beauty and the Beast running from December 26 through December 30 at DeVos Performance Center. And what would Christmas be without The Nutcracker? Beloved by children everywhere, the Grand Rapids Ballet will fill the stage with dancing mice, ballerinas galore and beautiful music. The Nutcracker will be presented December 14 through December 23. As the only professional ballet company in the state, Grand Rapids Ballet is always a treat and never more so than at Christmas time. On December 15, the Gaither Christmas Homecoming Show will fill Van Andel Arena with songs of the season. Suitable for the whole family, this popular musical presentation will bring the best in Christian music to an appreciative crowd. Our own Grand Rapids Symphony hosts Cirque de Noel on December 18. With splendid music and the magical Cirque do Soleil troupe, it will be a special evening of entertainment for everyone. Of course, your own church or synagogue, the local schools and many other venues will offer forth their own lineup to keep you busy during the winter holidays. You can find out more about these events and many, many others at www.experiencegr.com and in Thursdays editions of the Grand Rapids Press. Fill your calendar with what you love best about the season and enjoy!

Review of The Female Vision

issue in companies failure to recognize, value or understand womens workplace contributions. Their research finds that meaningful work and strong relationships motivate women more than financial compensation. Women also recognize the consequences of sacrificing long-term goals for short-term profits. The third chapter, which discusses the 2008 financial crisis, provides a great example of the dangers of the typical (read, male) narrow, one-sided vision. To create a setting where women can thrive, leaders should embrace empathy, and value both qualitative and quantitative knowledge. The authors make a compelling case for why managers should care about the lack of women in high-level positions and explain what companies can do about it. getAbstract recommends this book to executives who care about their companys strategy and leadership, and want to tap into the female vision.
