SUPERSTORM Sandy left a trail of devastation and at least 101 dead as it moved from the Caribbean to America's East Coast - but amidst the misery of record power outage and epic flooding, the Fiji representative to the United Nations has assured that all Fijians are safe. New York-based Peter Thomson said the transportation and power systems were crippled and all public institutions were closed. Millions are affected. He said Manhattan was shut off from the rest of the world with nearly all bridges and tunnels to the outlying boroughs and to New Jersey shut down. "At this very moment, New York does not look very pleasant. The island is cut off because most of the workers live in areas surrounding Manhattan, the subway systems are all closed because of seawater surges that also damaged the power system," he said. "As far as we know, all Fijians are safe." "I take my hat off to the State and the government, the way they handled this disaster, the people were warned early and the emergency team was ready to work, so I expect the restoration of services won't take long," he said. Apisai Tuiqere, a Qalikarua, Matuku, native living in Vermont, told the reporter that at 6pm (1am US time) that while they were 193 miles away from New York, he felt like he was at a train station. "The sound of the wind is like there's a train travelling past. We are getting the first wave of winds right now and if it continues on its path then its New

Apisai Tuiqere says while Superstorm Sandy was as destructive as predicted, the situation could have been worse had she maintained strength when she fumed into East Coast America on Monday night. "It could have been worse. We were lucky the winds which were strong at 1am Tuesday died down before daybreak," he said. Tuiqere said he was overwhelmed by the response of the emergency teams. It was very well organised." Counsellor Fiji mission to the United Nations Luke Daunivalu, agreed with Mr Tuiqere. "Had Sandy not weakened it would have been a different story," he said. "We were lucky," she said, adding that she had been in touch with other Fijians in the area. Weather watchers had dubbed the storm "Frankenstorm" because Sandy, a wintry system from the west was expected to combine with cold air streaming from the Arctic as it zeroed in on America's largest city. The monstrous hybrid brought not only rain, high wind and sea surges but snow as well. The width of the storm was 1600 kilometers and it packed a wind speed of 280km/hr at landfall. The largestsized hurricane to hit the United States was expected to affect 60 million people across the East Coast, affecting major cities from New York, Portland, Philadelphia, Burlington, Buffalo, and Washington DC. Storm damage was projected at approximately $20 billion, meaning it could prove to be one of the costliest natural disasters in U.S. history. Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama has reassured the nation that elections will be held in 2014 despite people spreading rumours it would not happen. He said he was aware of certain people spreading this rumour. Let me reassure the people of Fiji that we will go to the polls in 2014 to elect a new government to lead the country, the Prime Minister said. He said he had continuously mentioned Governments commitment to see that the elections would be held in 2014 and has never looked back. In his communication with foreign countries he said, the Prime Minister also reassured them of the Fijian Governments roadmap to democracy. The Prime Minster said they had already started work on the formulation of the new constitution and the Constitution Commission had a timeline to follow. The Commission has just completed hearing and collecting submissions. Now they are collating the public submissions and based on the Guiding Principles, the Commission will draft a constitution. The draft constitution, he said, would then, in January 2013, be submitted to the Constituent Assembly. According to the Prime Minister, the Constituent Assembly will consist of representatives of civil society groups

and organisations that are Fijianregistered, including faith-based organisations, national institutions, political parties, and Government. The assembly will consider the draft constitution in an inclusive and transparent process, based on the Guiding Principles. The Prime Minister has already announced that the rules for the Constituent Assembly, such as quorum, speaking rights and voting shall be finalised with the assistance of international experts prior to the formation of the Constituent Assembly. Responding to claims by some political parties that its membership would be in Governments favour, the Prime Minister said this would not be the case. It will be an inclusive assembly and the selection of the membership will be transparent and they hope all organisations will participate in this Constituent Assembly. Governments objective, he adds, is to hear all Fijians voices. Once the Constituent Assembly approves the constitution by the end of February 2013, it will then be assented by President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau. The Government, he says, is strongly backing its roadmap to democracy and also has the strong backing of its foreign counterparts.
Farmers around the country received their last cane payment for 2011 season. Fiji Sugar Corporation executive chairman, Abdul Khan, said farmers were paid out $65.67 per tonne of sugar. This is quite encouraging. We have seen an increase in income for these farmers compared to past years, he said. Sugar Cane Growers Council acting chief executive, Sundresh Chetty, said from this final payment, farmers would not be paying industry institutions their dues. The council managed to get several
industry institutions such as the South Pacific Fertilisers and the Fiji Sugar Corporation to defer repayment of any loans that the farmers have with them, he said. We tried our best and got confirmation from the industry institutions to defer the repayment of the debts and levies that the farmers might have. However, this does not include any commercial loans that farmers might have with banks. Meanwhile, Mr Khan met with the officials of Rarawai and Lautoka Mills yesterday to discuss the progress on crushing.

Fiji's central bank - the Reserve Bank of Fiji (RBF) - says that while the pick-up in consumption and business investment domestically continues to drive the present recovery, recent downturns in trading partner demand can mean lower production and reduced earnings for the economy from some primary exports and remittances. However, RBF governor Barry Whiteside said the overall expansion for this year was expected to remain above 2 per cent. This, he said would be driven largely by the continued growth in consumption and investment related activities, evident through higher value added tax (VAT) collections, sales of new vehicles, private sector credit, and value of work put in place as well as domestic cement sales. Mr Whiteside made these comments while highlighting the outcome of the central bank board meeting where it was agreed to maintain the overnight policy rate (OPR) at 0.5 per cent. He also noted that the escalation in the financial and debt crisis in the Euro zone and persistent weakness in the US that was affecting economic activity globally prompted the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to downgrade its global growth projections for this year and 2013 from 3.9 per cent to 3.3 per cent and 3.6 per cent, respectively. Mr Whiteside said the downside risks had now worsened and subdued demand in the country's major trading partner economies had the potential to negatively impact the local economy through Fiji's trade and financial linkages. He said globally, the heightened risks were pushing authorities to maintain fiscal discipline through lower deficits and debt levels, as well as shore up foreign reserves in order to maintain buffers in the possible event of declines in their respective economies. He added the Macroeconomic Policy Committee was reviewing its April growth forecast of 2.7 per cent for this year. He said this would take into account the combined impact of continuing buoyancy in domestic demand on the one hand and the deterioration in external demand on the other.

first physical gold trade for a Pacific Central Bank demonstrating the bank's market-leading product capabilities. He said the bank also delivered a landmark transaction for Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC), providing a trade finance facility of $120million to help reinvigorate the country's sugar industry. "ANZ continues to be positive about the region's long-term growth prospects given its geographic, business and cultural links to Australia, New Zealand and Asia," Mr Plante said. "We look forward to being part of the Pacific's ongoing economic and social development," he said. Also late last week, ANZ Fiji chief executive officer Vishnu Mohan was appointed to head the Pacific operations across 12 island countries. Do you know exactly what you are paying for? And do you know your financial obligations under your credit contract? If not, then there is a need for you to read your credit contract before signing it. The failure by many people to properly read, analyze and understand their credit contracts before signing them has left them in a financial mess. An assessment of complaints lodged with the country's consumer watchdog shows that many people do not understand their rights and responsibilities when borrowing credit or taking goods on credit. But despite this, the Consumer Council of Fiji says people blindly sign the credit contracts. In December last year, the council launched the "Read Before You Sign" campaign to allow consumers make informed and wise decisions. The campaign aims to make consumers
The Australia New Zealand Bank (ANZ) has reported a full-year net profit after tax of $A189million (approximately $F349million) for its Pacific businesses this year. This marks an increase of 15 per cent in profit compared to the previous year. "The Pacific is a strategically important market where ANZ has operated for 130 years and we're committed to continuing to invest in service and in innovation for our customers and in contributing to stronger communities," ANZ chief executive officer Asia Pacific Gilles Plante said. "Our international presence means we are uniquely placed to connect our customers in these markets with opportunities in Australia, New Zealand and Asia," Mr Plante said. This year, he said ANZ completed its
The Attorney-General and Minister for Industry and Trade, Mr. Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum, underscored the concerns of the Pacific ACP countries with regards to Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (C-EPA) negotiations, to the European Commissions, Trade Commissioner, Mr. Karel de Gutch. Minister Sayed-Khaiyum and Commissioner de Gutch met in the margins of Joint Ministerial Trade Committee (JMTC), in Brussels, which they cochaired, on behalf of the ACP Group and the European Union, respectively. The Pacific ACP (PACP) region has been negotiating the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement with the European Commission (EC) for the past 9 years and a number of contentious issues are yet to be resolved said the Minister. ((Attorney-General and Minister for Industry and trade Mr. Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum and European Commission's Trade Commissioner Mr. Karel de Gutch in Brussels, Belgium The Minister discussed with the Trade Commissioner the need for continuous and meaningful engagement by the EC with the Pacific ACP countries at technical and political levels, in order to finalise the negotiations on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. As of now, all the 14 Pacific ACP countries have submitted Market Access Offers to the Commission in accordance with EU benchmarks, which is an indication of the commitment from the Pacific countries
aware of their rights and responsibilities before accessing goods and services on credit. It is telling consumers to read, analyze and understand the credit contract before signing in order to know what they have to do financially. With the Hindu festival of lights Diwali on November 13 and Christmas in December, the council said the need to focus on the campaign was now more than ever. Council's chief executive officer Premila Kumar said consumers access goods on credit during the festive season because of tempting advertisements like "zero deposit". She said people should not blindly sign their credit contracts without understanding them when buying goods on credit during the festive season. "The campaign hopes to promote and encourage a holistic change in the way consumers borrow and manage their money," said Mrs Kumar.
to conclude the Comprehensive EPA with the EU, said Minister SayedKhaiyum. The Pacific is requesting for reciprocal commitment from the EC, not only at technical level but also with a demonstration political will to bring negotiations with the Pacific to conclusion for the mutual benefit of both parties, said the Minister. The Pacific ACP region is the smallest configuration of the ACP Group, however, as a group it has many similarities and commonalities such as similar comparative advantages, market requirements and consumer demands, as well as, vulnerable economies and fragile ecosystems. Therefore, a successfully negotiated EPA with the Pacific is highly achievable and will demonstrate EUs repeatedly stated commitment that EPAs are development focused, stated the Minister. The Minister pointed out to the Trade Commissioner that the Pacific ACP region is awaiting response from the Economic Union on the Market Access Offers and textual proposals submitted on the draft Economic Partnership Agreement. Therefore, political intervention and further technical discussions at this point is crucial to get an amicable conclusion to the EPA. Both Commissioner de Gutch and Minister Sayed-Khaiyum agreed that efforts need to be stepped by both sides to achieve a development focused and mutually beneficial Comprehensive EPA between the Pacific ACP and the EU.

Children using firecrackers should be closely monitored at all times. Firecrackers should be used in a well-spaced area and not exposed to other flammable substances. On the same note firecrackers should be stored well away from children who might be tempted to use them without supervision. She said the National Fire Authority (NFA) continued to stress the need for every family member to know about fire safety. As stressed by the NFA, it is imperative that every member of the family was made aware of what to do in an emergency and to ensure there is an evacuation plan in place. People have been made homeless with hundreds and thousands of dollars lost through fires that could have easily been avoided if attention was paid to even the tiniest of situations that could be a fire hazard. The Fiji Police Force is concerned with the recent increase in the number of reported fire incidents as Diwali draws near. Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said 10 structural home fires were reported this month alone, with two reported fires for business premises. She said a number of fires reported this month resulted from unattended cooking and unsupervised children left to play with fire ignition sources. As we near the Diwali celebrations with the use of firecrackers expected to be high, there needs to be closer supervision of their use because it could result in the unnecessary loss of property and lives, Ms Naisoro said. We are anticipating the use of candles, firecrackers and diyas for decorative use and we are encouraging people to enlist the services of a qualified electricians to help put up their lights as a safety precaution.

"Fiji's constitution-making process just saw the successful conduct of the electronic voter registration and the completion last week of the public consultation on the new constitution," she said. "The Constitutional Commission is now assembling the public submission and based on the declared guiding principles, will draft the new constitution for submission in January 2013 to a constituent assembly, who will from January - March 2013 deliberate on the draft constitution for approval by the end of March 2013," Ms Mawi said.

The Head of Government made the comments at the opening of the new Raiwaqa Rugby club house. Prime Minister Bainimarama said, we all know that this community has had its challenges and problems in the past but Raiwaqa is turning itself around. Theres a new sense of community spirit. And Im delighted to say that this is being driven by young people, the Prime Minister said. While opening the rugby club, Prime Minister Bainimarama also highlighted nearby housing projects. It will be a gathering point for many of the residents of one of the most ambitious of my Governments projects - to provide new housing worthy of the new Raiwaqa. We will soon be seeing construction at two sites around this facility that set a new standard for affordable housing, he said This time next year, Raiwaqa will provide 208 brand new homes for our people. Forty-six (46) of these will be available by the end of this year. As part of efforts to effectively address healthy living and proper sanitation, the ministry of health is taking the lead role in creating more awareness in rural communities across the country. A team from the ministry recently toured the Lomaiviti group to conduct awareness programs where typhoid cases were often prevalent in the past. The Ministry of Healths Lomaiviti sub divisional medical officer, Doctor Josaia Tiko said that, the visiting team conducted awareness programs about the illness and to reiterate the
importance about hand washing and proper sanitation. It is important that the community learn how to prevent the spread of typhoid by washing hands well especially after using sanitary facilities, before preparing food or drinks. Its equally important to recognise the early signs and symptoms of typhoid fever so as to seek medical advice early, Tiko said. He has also advised members of the public to practice safe and clean hygiene to prevent the spread of such diseases.

One of Royal Caribbeans Vision Class cruise ships was quarantined in Suva due to an outbreak of the gastrointestinal bug, norovirus, according to a report Oct. 30. According to the report, the Fiji Health Ministry has confirmed 51 cases of the highly communicable norovirus on board the Rhapsody of the Seas which is carrying over 2300 passengers and 870 crew. The reporter also states the affected passengers have been isolated and no one is allowed to enter the quarantined area on the ship except the medical response team. Rhapsody of the Seas has departed Fiji for Noumea. In late August, the same cruise ship was quarantined in Victoria, British Columbia for a norovirus outbreak that infected at least 159 passengers and crew, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Norovirus is a highly contagious illness caused by infection with a virus of the same name. It is often called by other
names, such as viral gastroenteritis, stomach flu, and food poisoning. The symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and some stomach cramping. Sometimes people additionally have a low-grade fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, and a general sense of tiredness. The illness often begins suddenly, and the infected person may feel very sick. In most people, the illness is self-limiting with symptoms lasting for about 1 or 2 days. In general, children experience more vomiting than adults do. Norovirus is spread person to person particularly in crowded, closed places. Norovirus is typically spread through contaminated food and water, touching surfaces or objects contaminated with norovirus and then putting your hand or fingers in your mouth and close contact with someone who is vomiting or has diarrhea. Norovirus causes more than 20 million illnesses annually, and it is the leading cause of gastroenteritis outbreaks in the United States.

Airports Fiji Limited has set up a centre to address emergency medical issues faced by international travellers transiting through Nadi. The setting up of the Nadi Airport Medical Centre is to prevent incidents which attract negative international publicity, such as a recent incident where it was claimed that a visitor had died because of the ignorance of airport staff. The clinic's medical officer, Doctor Kanna Goundar, said the centre was well staffed and prepared to handle cases. He acknowledged that the absence of medical staff at the airport could have
resulted in delayed medical attention to some passengers in the past. "By having us at the airport 24 hours and seven days a week we will be able to reach people within minutes," Dr Goundar said, adding that previously, patients were referred to the Lautoka and Nadi hospitals. The clinic has two doctors and an ambulance will be on standby to transport patients to the hospitals. AFL general manager finance, information and technology Lawrence Liew said the new clinic was for the safety of its customers and that people needed to understand that sometimes human lives would be lost.

Fiji's Constitution Commission will host a seminar on Religion and State in Suva where representatives from many religious institutions will discuss their views on the role of religion with regard to the state. The seminar which is held in conjunction with the Faculty of Arts, Law and Education of the University of the South Pacific will have panelists from the Christian, Hindu and Muslim faiths. Religion has been a highly-talked about subject during the public consultations held by the commission around the country in the last three months; some who submitted their views spoke on the importance of religion in their own lives and that of the nation as a whole. This seminar is the third in a series of public forums being organised by the Commission as part of its on-
going consultation and dialogue process, providing the Commission an opportunity to listen to expert views and engage the public on some very important constitutional issues such as this religion and state. The key speakers include Rev. Dr. Cliff Bird and Dr. Holger Szesnat of the Pacific Theological College, Abdul Qayyum Khan of the Fiji Muslim League, Vijendra Prakash of the Shree Sanatan Dharm Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji, Pastor Wame Sausau of Seventh Day Adventist Church, General Secretary Methodist Church in Fiji Rev. Tuikilakila Waqairatu, Elder Taniela Wakolo of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and Fr Jim Kolodisi of the Catholic Church. Everyone must adhere to the Legal Notice No. 131 of 2006 which says that all use and discharge of firecrackers shall be conducted between the hours of 5.00pm and 10.00pm except for Diwali Holiday where the time for discharge of firecrackers shall be from 5.00pm to
12 midnight,Mr Wailker said. He said it is illegal to sell firecrackers to persons under the age of 18 years and should be used under adult supervision. Mr Fotofili said that various agencies including the Fiji Police Forces will monitor the sale and use of firecrackers around the country. This is to also ensure that merchants around the country dont sell fireworks to those below the age of 18 years. We are serious about this because we do not want a repeat of past incidents and accidents which has resulted in a loss of life, he said.

The Ministry of Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation and UNICEF launched the Blue Ribbon Campaign to protect children against abuse and neglect. And a total of 19 days will be devoted to raise more awareness on the theme, Protection of Children Against Abuse and Neglect before the celebration of the universal Children's Day on November 20. Permanent Secretary, Govind Sami says the National Roadmap to Democracy and Sustainable Socio-Economic Development (RDSSED) 2009-2014 articulates this commitment enabling various ministries and departments to promote awareness on the protection of young citizens. There is a need for all of us to collaborate together to protect our children from fear, negligence and abuse so that they can live freely and independently in their countries, Sami said.
UNICEF Chief of Child Protection, Amanda Bissex added that 72% of the respondents admit to household abuse of their children. Child abuse is mostly perpetrated by someone close to the child like parents, guardians or teachers, she said. She further added that there will now be zero tolerance for child abuse and child negligence. Meanwhile, the Ministry has also hired a consultant to assist in review of the following legislations on child welfare and protection, the adoption of infants act, juveniles act and the probation act. Sami added that that there will now be a more controlled adoption in Fiji to avoid children become vulnerable to child labour and human trafficking which is on the rise across the world now. Activities across the country has been organised by the Ministry and Unicef for over a period of nineteen days ending a parade on November 20.
Minimum wage rates for Fiji workers have been revised by between 7.9% to 10.4% under new rates announced by the Labour, lndustrial Relations and Employment, Jone Usamate. The new minimum wage rates applies to workplaces covered under the ten (10) Wages Regulations Orders (WROs) and comes immediately into effect. Sawmilling and logging workers get the biggest rise of 10.4%, while road transport workers receive the second largest bump of 10%. Workers in the manufacturing and garment industries get a 9.9% increase and security service workers get a 9.7% increase. An increase of 7.9% has been extended to workers in the Printing Trades, the Building and Civil and Electrical Engineering Trades, Hotel & Catering Trades, Mining & Quarrying Industry, and Wholesale & Retail Trades. The Minister said these raises are reflective of the positive growth in the national economy and confidence in the labour market. He mentioned that this is the first time in the history of Fiji that government has introduced a productivity-based
wage system for the ten sectors covered under the WROs, which also accounts for the cost of living component. Usamate has appealed to all employers to honor their moral and legal responsibilities to their workers by fully complying with the new wage rates and minimum conditions under the 2012 WROs. He reminded them to continuously improve their levels of productivity by adopting modern business practices and to invest in the quality training of their workers to remain competitive. He also thanked the Deputy Chairpersons of the ten Wages Councils for their dedication and commitment to complete the due process under the labour law despite the resignation of the Wages Councils Chairperson and the boycott of the FTUC members of the Wages Councils. Usamate reiterated government's commitment to ensure social justice prevails for workers and he thanked all stakeholders for their understanding and patience in reaching the new rates after the respective Wages Councils adopted productivity-based wage criteria to review the initial rates proposed by the Councils.

Foster's Group Pacific Limited's group operating profit before income tax dropped by 34.9 per cent to $6.039m this year from $9.277million last year. The company says the decrease was mainly driven by the increase in cost of sales by $4.6 million (8.9 per cent) over last year. And that increase, it attributed to the one-off $1.026million write-down of bottles and crate fraud, and the $0.389million write-down of spare parts stock write off (both in its Samoa operation); and commodity cost increases driven by the high Australian dollar. Another driver of the decrease in operating profit, it said was the increase in selling, marketing and distribution costs totaling $0.767million that because of increased investment in brand advertising, trade promotion activities and trade marketing to support its brands. The company's annual report released from the South Pacific Stock Exchange (SPSE) yesterday said those cost increases were partially offset by a decrease in administration expenses of $0.211 million. Overall, it reports consolidated sales revenue increased by 3.4 per cent ($4.653million) this year from $2.087million last year. Consolidated sales volume increased by 1.5 per cent to 3.352 million nineliter cases this year from 3.301 million nine-liter cases last year.
In his report, FGP's chairman John Murphy said during the year, their businesses continued to face many operational issues and challenges. He said sales demand and growth was modest, constrained by domestic economic and market conditions, while costs of production continued to increase, driven by the high Aussie dollar on imported raw materials and fuel prices. "Our business in Samoa incurred oneoff costs in relation to a fraud incident and a spare parts impairment charge. I am pleased to report that the fraud incident has been fully investigated and remedial action has been taken to prevent a re-occurrence, including a significant strengthening of our internal controls," Mr Murphy said. FGP's outlook for 2013 and beyond, he said would largely be determined by continued growth in the Fijian economy as well as further recovery in the global economy. He said a main focus for 2013 and beyond would be "unlock the growth potential of the local and export markets" for beer and rum via an increased capital investment program. "This will provide the essential plant and equipment upgrades needed to improve our business efficiencies and capability to enhance our ability to compete in export markets," Mr Murphy said. FGP is a stock listed on the South Pacific Stock Exchange (SPSE).

Chai Time
ARIES (March 21 to April 19): Events in the last few days of the week show how much your position has improved. Decisions made then allow you to turn your attention to the nittygritty of change or recent developments. These include working with friends or associates and discussing plans for the future. Do not be disheartened if you go through several problems. It is a time of change and each revision adds something important. Of equal significance is time with loved ones or offspring. They too are changing and need your attention. The week brings you money, but luck forces you to undertake intense discussion; nothing could be more productive. A happy journey comes your way. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20): While you may face minor complications, this is an extraordinary week. Opportunities begin on Monday. In between you run into fresh ideas, new people and places. The trick is to show interest, but commit to nothing until very late in the game. Life has not always been kind to you in the past; now is your turn to make up for lost time. Career offers are positive and lucrative. Your familys health is faint and expenses are heavy. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20): Wonderful opportunities thread their way through this week. But the planetary emphasis is on obligations to others, or work and duties to yourself, which range from your health and wellbeing, to certain troublesome issues. Initially, these seem uninteresting; however events around the week make you confront obstacles. Some involve partners; many are self-made. On the 1st, putting what you have learned into action proves more than worthwhile. Domestic matters are easy. Journeys and happy holidays come your way. CANCER (June 21 to July 21):
Opportunities and dilemmas that involve money, travel, legal matters and certain obligations, some of which are out of your hands, are of considerable significance. But these may have to take a back seat to issues of a partnership nature. Some bring understanding; others raise uncomfortable but worthwhile issues. Decide on nothing until after this week, and then act quickly, since the pace picks up remarkably and you feel more than ready to capitalize on what arises. Cloudy trends persuade you to take on emotional targets. LEO (July 22 to August 22): During the week you encounter opportunities, intriguing people and even the option of travel. The one thing you cannot have, however, is the outcome of endeavor. Obviously, you are not happy about this. But it is a time to settle problems from the past that could potentially trip you up, while you explore options. Practical, financial and domestic matters need attention, but are easily resolved. After that the worlds your oyster. After this week, decisions must be made. Until then, leave no stone unturned. You may think you are sitting on the fence for some achievement, but that is the only way. VIRGO (August 23 to September 21): The only real mistake you could make is to assume that others know what you feel or want. However obvious to you, recent changes have influenced everyones priorities, including yours. Further, discussions could be as important as any outcome. Remarkable opportunities could leave you better off financially in a new home or even madly in love; there are a few limits, though, to what you can do or experience. So do not wonder what might happen or waste time thinking what the best line of action might be. Travel may come your way. LIBRA (September 22 to October
22): The week is all about practical matters, where situations demand concentration, combined with discrimination. Disciplines that once seemed restrictive are actually welcome. In fact, they make it easier to know how to respond to the remarkable opportunities on this week. Confusion on the next week requires caution, but nothing can undermine this remarkable week. Good news comes your way in business. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21): Usually it is you who introduces friends or colleagues to the latest in people, places or ideas. From late this week the roles are reversed and as much as you enjoy the attention, you are uncomfortable. But let others open doors for you; this is a time of change and the broader the spectrum of your experience the more satisfying is the next chapter of your life. On matters related to the family, home or security, there is some reluctance to give up what is familiar. But further exploration will not increase your anxiety; it will only make you more certain when decision time comes. Be prudent in your dealings with money matters. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21): Opportunities taken are inextricably linked to increased responsibilities. Though things are going well, you could nevertheless begin to feel boxed in. Some obligations are made to yourself and relate to your physical or even emotional well-being; others are duties to others which you really cannot ignore. Situations early this week force you to review these and while your first instinct may be to lighten your load - do not. It is far better that you work with others, sharing the burden. Personal happiness is accented and the more organized you become, the more time you have to enjoy happy moments
with loved ones. Your career may go far. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19): The events on this week could lead to a crisis or could be a fullfledged opportunity, but with the speed of chance, which remains unclear until the end of the week. So give everything at least one try. Furthermore, confusion could obscure important facts. You are in the midst of a period of remarkable development. While nothing can undermine that, making the best of it requires a more easygoing approach to life than is your habit. Developments on the career scene keep you on your toes. Socially, a hectic phase. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18): It is not so much what you do, but achieving a balance between activities out in the world and responsibilities close to home that is your challenge. New people or intriguing developments make work interesting and life a joy; particularly with those you love. But confusion for most of the week could muddy otherwise clear waters; if you are worried or feel slighted, discuss your concerns. Duties of a family or domestic nature could easily dominate you, but you will regret allowing them to do so. Each star brings its own dramas, but also its own remarkable opportunities. Socially, an upward trend. PISCES (February 19 to March 20): Only sometime ago the stern and rather humorless Saturn departed from your sign, leaving you with a lighter and less complicated life, and with a kind of new discipline. This week brings opportunities, interesting new ideas and people, but you do not know what to make of them. Take your time, things may not be what they seem; you will later see the finest opportunities fruition. Hasty actions achieve nothing. Health causes concern. Children bring good news.

An immigration adviser has been fined $3000 after he left a family stranded illegally in New Zealand - one of two punishments for immigration officers announced. In decisions released the Immigration Advisers Complaints and Disciplinary Tribunal barred Prem Singh and Barbara Nassiep from applying for a licence for two years. Mr Singh, of Romys Immigration Services in Hillsborough, was penalised for "delinquent disregard for professional obligations," the tribunal said. Mr Singh lodged a visa application for his client which failed. He told his client the matter was being referred to the Ombudsmen and he could not be contacted after that. When his client contacted Immigration New Zealand she discovered there was no ongoing process and she and her family were in New Zealand
unlawfully. "This was not an isolated lapse; in the course of his instructions Mr Singh consistently failed to act professionally," the tribunal said. Mr Singh was ordered to refund fees of $1480, pay compensation of $1200 and pay $3000 in penalties. In the second case, Ms Nassiep, also known as Barbara Parker, failed to sign a written agreement with her client or account for fees she received in advance from her client when her licence had expired. "This was not simply an issue of lack of care; she held funds she had no entitlement to, did not bank them properly and then left the country. "Ms Nassiep's lack of remorse, insight, or even willingness to engage with what a serious complaint is clearly, is significant." She was ordered to refund fees of $7505, and pay $4000 in penalties.

The NSW Police Integrity Commission (PIC) is investigating an officer accused of fraud, including helping fake marriages to fool immigration officials. The PIC has begun a public hearing into the conduct of Senior Constable Hoan Thien Pham. Counsel-assisting Jeremy Gormly SC has told the hearing that Senior Constable Pham helped his long-term partner Bich Tuyen Kha to fake two marriages to get Australian visas for Vietnamese men. The PIC heard one of the men was registered as a parent to a child who was actually fathered by Senior Constable Pham. Senior Constable Pham was also asked about a text message sent from his phone earlier this year warning his brother-in-law of a drug raid planned,
targeting an associate. But he said he did not send the message, and it may have been sent while his phone was charging. Mr Gormly says the policeman also misused his role as justice of the peace and deposited nearly $20,000 into his bank account that could be proceeds of crime. The hearing has been played phone taps of Senior Constable Pham speaking earlier this year to his brother, Chau Pham. In the call, the policeman asked his brother to fake a break-in at his house and take $50,000 being kept in a wardrobe by his brother-in-law, Tan Dung Kha. He says in the call that the money has come from junkies. Senior Constable Pham has told the PIC the call was a joke. The hearing continues.

President Barack Obama has won glowing praise from a fierce foe for his handling of superstorm Sandy, which has killed at least 30 Americans and caused widespread destruction along the east coast. Republican New Jersey governor Chris Christie has repeatedly attacked Mr Obama on the campaign trail, claiming the Democrat does not deserve a second term in the White House. But just hours after the worst of the storm knocked out power for 2.4 million people in New Jersey, south of New York City, Mr Christie gave Mr Obama a glowing character reference. He said he had asked the president to cut through bureaucratic "mumbo jumbo" and help New Jersey, and he "got on it". "The president has been all over this, he deserves great credit," Mr Christie said. "He gave me his number at the White House, told me to call if I needed anything, and he absolutely means it. "It's been very good working with the president, and his administration has been coordinating with us great - it's been wonderful." The praise from Mr Christie, who is mentioned as a possible 2016 Republican presidential candidate should Mr Romney lose, represented the kind of publicity a campaign, for all the hundreds of millions of dollars spent on it, simply cannot buy. It came just a week before the election, with polls showing the race as a dead heat. "I don't give a damn about election day," the outspoken governor said. "It doesn't matter a lick to me at the moment. I've got bigger fish to fry." Sandy made landfall in New Jersey Monday morning (AEDT), leaving behind a trail of flooded homes, toppled trees and downed power lines in the nation's most densely populated
region. At least 30 people were reportedly killed along the eastern seaboard. Mr Obama again cancelled his campaign activities for Wednesday and will instead visit New Jersey to assess the damage and recovery efforts. Asked by the media whether he would tour parts of his state with Mr Romney, Mr Christie replied: "I have no idea, nor am I the least bit concerned or interested," he said. "I've got a job to do here in New Jersey that's much bigger than presidential politics, and I couldn't care less about any of that stuff. "If you think right now I give a damn about presidential politics then you don't know me." On Tuesday Mr Romney transformed what was intended originally to be a campaign stop into a storm relief event in Ohio, taking donations of food and supplies to storm victims. But he will return to full campaign mode with three rallies in the key swing state of Florida on Wednesday. Mr Romney will stump for votes in two crucial districts in Florida - the cities of Jacksonville in the north and Tampa in the centre - as well as in Coral Gables, near the Democratic stronghold of Miami. Mr Romney is seen as having a more narrow route than Mr Obama to the 270 electoral votes necessary to win the White House. With some national polls showing Mr Romney slightly ahead, Mr Obama is clinging to slim leads in many of the eight or so swing states where voters will likely determine the outcome of the election. A RealClearPolitics average of polls gives Mr Romney a 1.3 percentage point edge over the president. A CNN survey released on Monday showed Mr Romney at 50 per cent support and Mr Obama at 49 per cent.

Want to avoid paying extra baggage charges on flights? Put on this 'wearable' suitcase! An Irishman has come up with a bizarre new "wearable luggage" that can hold a total of 15kg of luggage and can help you beat the baggage charges levied by budget airlines. Engineer John Power has invented a coat, priced at 56 pounds, which is made of light but strong polyester and has 14 variously sized pockets that can hold a total of 15 kg of luggage, as reported. After boarding, the dress called
Jaktogo can be folded up and carried as a shoulder bag. Power, 57, said that he travels twice a week using budget airlines. Though the budget airlines' advertised ticket prices are often low, most of them charge extra for hold luggage. However, they allow passengers to take one piece of hand luggage on board for free. They also allow jackets or coats? So Power's invention allows travelers to by-pass the charges altogether, the report said.
A Sydney man who threatened staff and passengers on a Tiger Airways flight has been fined $1,000. Scott Laughlin, from Sydney's northern beaches, was given the fine for behaving in an offensive and disorderly manner on a flight from the Gold Coast to Sydney earlier this month. him when the plane landed. The 39-year-old has also been given a 21-month jail sentence for intimidating a police officer, using offensive language and using a carriage service to menace or harass following an incident in April. A magistrate is yet to determine if he can serve the sentence as community service.
Zac Vawter Will Use 'Bionic Leg' Controlled By His Thoughts To Climb Chicago Skyscraper
After losing his right leg in a motorcycle accident, the 31-yearold software engineer signed up to become a research subject, helping to test a trailblazing prosthetic leg that's controlled by his thoughts. He will put this groundbreaking "bionic" leg to the ultimate test Sunday when he attempts to climb 103 flights of stairs to the top of Chicago's Willis Tower, one of the world's tallest skyscrapers. If all goes well, he'll make history with the bionic leg's public debut. His whirring, robotic leg will respond to electrical impulses from muscles in his hamstring. Mr Vawter will think, "Climb stairs," and the motors, belts and chains in his leg will synchronise the movements of its ankle and knee. Vawter hopes to make it to the top in an hour, longer than it would've taken before his amputation, less time than it would take with his normal prosthetic leg - or, as he calls it, his "dumb" leg. He kicked a soccer ball, walked around the room and climbed stairs. The researchers beamed. Mr Vawter likes the bionic leg. Compared to his regular prosthetic, it's more responsive and more fluid. As an engineer, he enjoys learning how the leg works. To one generation it sounds like The Six Million Dollar Man, a 1970s TV show featuring a rebuilt hero. A younger generation may think of Luke Skywalker's bionic hand. The $US8 million project is funded by the US Department of Defence and involves Vanderbilt University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Rhode Island and the University of New Brunswick. Mr Vawter and the Chicago researchers recently took the elevator to the 103rd floor of the Willis Tower to see the view after an afternoon of work in the lab. Mr Hargrove and Mr Vawter bantered in the elevator in anticipation of Sunday's event. Mr Hargrove: "Am I allowed to trash talk you?"

Effective October 25, 2012, sponsored spouses or partners must now live together in a legitimate relationship with their sponsor for two years from the day they receive permanent residence status in Canada. If you are a spouse or partner being sponsored to come to Canada, this applies to you if: You are being sponsored by a permanent resident or Canadian citizen You have been in a relationship for two years or less with your sponsor You have no children in common Your application was received on or after October 25, 2012 There are some people who think marriage to a Canadian citizen will be their ticket to Canada. It is a crime for foreign nationals to marry Canadian citizens or permanent residents only to gain entry into Canada. Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) is working to prevent these fraudulent marriages. In many cases, sponsors and foreign applicants arrange a marriage of
Marriage Fraud
convenience: a marriage or commonlaw relationship where the sole purpose is for the sponsored spouse to immigrate to Canada. CIC officers are specially trained to recognize genuine immigration applications, and they know how to detect marriages of convenience. They use several methods to uncover marriage fraud, including document checks, site visits and interviews with sponsors and applicants. Canadian citizens or permanent residents found to be part of a marriage of convenience for immigration purposes may be
charged with a crime. Dont become a victim of marriage fraud If you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and you meet someone from another country on the Internet or while travelling, you should take care if you are considering marrying them and sponsoring them to Canada. Sponsors must financially support their spouse for three years, even if the marriage or relationship fails. If your spouse uses social assistance, you will have to repay the money, and you
wont be able to sponsor anyone else until the debt is repaid. Sponsorship is a legally binding financial commitment with the Government of Canada. Sponsors: Do not be tempted by offers of money or other rewards to enter into a marriage of convenience just so the person can immigrate to Canada. If you do this, you can face serious criminal charges, and you will still have to meet the terms of the sponsorship. Do not feel you are obligated to help somebody by being part of a marriage of convenience, no matter what the reason. It is not worth the risks. Visa applicants: Dont get involved in a marriage of convenience. You will be refused a visa and may be banned from travel to Canada for two years. This will remain permanently on your CIC record. CIC recognizes that even genuine marriages can fail. However, if you enter into a marriage of convenience and come to Canada as an immigrant, enforcement action can be taken against you. This enforcement action could end with your being deported by the Canada Border Services Agency.

The family of the Grade 6 girl who died after being pinned by a minivan that crashed into her classroom in St. Paul, Alta. on Thursday says she was a happy girl with a passion for dance. Megan Wolitski died in an Edmonton hospital on Friday. We would like Megan to be remembered for the incredible girl that she was. She loved her family and loved to take care of her sister and baby cousins, her family wrote in an emailed statement.
Megan and two other girls were critically injured when a van smashed through a ground-floor window of Racette Junior High School on Thursday morning. All three were flown to Edmonton hospital. One was upgraded to stable condition on Thursday afternoon. We ask that you pray for her classmates who are still recovering from their serious injuries, the statement said. Megan's family said she was a Girl Guide who was looking forward to an upcoming trip to Switzerland with her unit. Police have charged the driver of the van, Richard Edward Benson, 46, with three counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm, one count of resisting arrest and one count of possession of marijuana.
Surrey RCMP are requesting the publics assistance in identifying a bank robber with a unique clothing description. On Tuesday, October 2nd, 2012, at approximately 10:15am, Surrey RCMP received a report of a robbery at a financial institution in the 15200 block of 56th Avenue (Hwy 10). A male had entered the financial institution and demanded money from the teller advising that he had a weapon but did not produce one. The suspect was described as a Caucasian male with a stocky build, broad shoulders, a beard, and wearing glasses. He was dressed in white coveralls, like a painter, and had a
Many B.C. homeowners assume that earthquake coverage is included in their house insurance, or that governments will compensate them for damage, but neither is the case. Many homeowners who arent sure if they are insured are reminded to ask about it when events occur like Saturday nights 7.7-magnitude quake centered near Haida Gwaii. "Every time there's a bit of a rumble, we do see more uptakes, if you will, from the public in terms of looking at earthquake insurance," said Lindsay Olson, of the Insurance Bureau of Canada. A B.C. government study in 2002 showed that 65 per cent of British Columbians in high-risk areas have quake insurance. Those who dont buy the extra coverage often dont bother because they assume their fellow taxpayers will pick up the tab, according to Jason Vander Zalm, of Square One Insurance. They believe that the government will step in if theres a major catastrophe and the government is going to somehow magically compensate the public if something happens to their homes, Vander Zalm said. The reality is, because it is an insurable event, its quite clear the government will not be stepping in. Cost also a deterrent Vander Zalm said that another reason
people dont bother is the extra cost. "On average, here in B.C., it accounts for between five and 50 per cent of people's homeowner insurance premiums, obviously depending on whether you are in a really earthquakeprone area," he said. Those areas include locations on Vancouver Island, Richmond and Delta. Earthquake insurance costs drop toward Maple Ridge, Abbotsford, Chilliwack and into the Interior. The price is based on information from the Geological Survey of Canada combined with characteristics of individual properties. "They reflect things like soil condition, what the structure is actually constructed of, whether it's woodframe or whether it's brick, and it also reflects the value of the building itself," Olson said. Compared to California where quakes are far more frequent B.C. rates are low. A B.C. house insured for $300,000 would have an annual earthquake premium ranging from $225 to $485. A California house insured for the same amount would have an annual premium of $865. Earthquake insurance will usually cover all damage caused by an earthquake. The only exception is damage caused by a tsunami.

The energy drink you consume may contain more caffeine than you know, according to new testing by Consumer Reports. Health concerns about energy drinks were heightened last week with reports of five deaths possibly linked to Monster Energy drinks. The family of one victim, a 14-yearold girl, is suing the company that produces Monster, claiming she died after drinking two 24 oz cans, each containing 240 mg of caffeine. This is the equivalent of four or more cups of coffee or bottles of caffeinated soda. The company issued a statement that it did not believe its product was in any way responsible for the death. Before the FDA story broke, Consumer Reports asked Monster why it didn't list caffeine levels. A representative replied, "because there is no legal or commercial business requirement to do so, and because our products are completely safe, and the actual numbers are not meaningful to most consumers." Caffeine is a key ingredient in nearly every energy drink on the market, but it can be hard to tell how much they contain. Consumer Reports has just conducted lab tests on dozens of topselling drinks. Everyone from Tim Tebow from 50 Cent and even Joan Rivers are advertising them. With their Facebook pages and internet video campaigns, manufacturers specifically target young people. But Consumer Reports says you have to be careful how much caffeine you drink. "It can quicken your pulse, cause abnormal heart rhythms, keep you from sleeping well and elevate your blood pressure," said Gayle Williams. Consumer Reports analyzed the caffeine content of 27 top-selling energy drinks, testing three samples each. Although some list the amount of caffeine on the package, they're not required to.
Consumer Reports found the numbers can be way off. "Some of the energy drinks underestimated the amount of caffeine listed on the label by 20 per cent or more," Williams said. So how much caffeine do energy drinks contain? In Consumer Reports' tests, it varied widely. For example, FRS Healthy Energy averaged 17 milligrams per container. Red Bull and Street Kings Energy around 80; 5-Hour Energy had 215 milligrams and 5-Hour Energy Extra Strength had 242. Most healthy adults can consume up to 400 milligrams of caffeine a day. "So for many people, an occasional energy drink is probably OK," Williams said. Or you can drink regular coffee. An eight-ounce cup contains roughly 100 milligrams of caffeine. Consumer and scientific groups have urged the food and drug administration to require companies to disclose caffeine levels, but the agency says it lacks the authority to do so. Many energy drinks do carry warnings that they are not for children, women who are pregnant or nursing women, or people sensitive to caffeine. Other research suggests that more than 13,000 people a year visit U.S. emergency rooms because of symptoms associated with these drinks, and thousands more call regional poison control centers. Health Canada used to classify energy drinks as natural health products because certain brands made health claims abut how they could restore alertness. That changed last fall, when the agency announced new regulations which will force manufacturers to say what's in those energy drinks, including the very high caffeine content. Health Canada has given the energy drink makers a transitional period to get up to speed. Labels should be present on all drinks by late 2013.

The province has introduced new legislation to protect public servants and employees of boards, agencies and commission from losing their jobs or facing bullying at work for reporting government misconduct. The Public Interest Disclosure Act will cover employees of the Alberta public service, school boards, health organizations and academic institutions and provincial agencies, boards and commissions. An independent agency called the Office of the Public Interest Disclosure Commissioner will be created to accept and investigate complaints from employees. The act also levies fines for anyone who impedes an investigation. "This is a historic milestone on our road to changing the way government does business," said Service Alberta Minister Manmeet Bhullar.
Bhullar says that the law protects those who "speak up against the abuse of taxpayer dollars, threats to public health and safety and the environment and allows for the ethical disclosure of information from anyone." In 2002, Calgary Liberal MLA David Swann was fired as the medical officer of health for the Palliser Health Region after speaking in favour of the Kyoto Protocol. Swann said that in its present form, the new legislation would not have prevented him from losing his job. "It only applies to employees," Swann said. "I was a contracted physician for the Palliser Health Region. I think it needs to be broadened if we're really serious about trying to protect everybody." The new law is expected to take effect next June.
Service Alberta Minister Manmeet Bhullar said the whistleblower legislation changes how the government does business
It was a sleepless night for a whole section of western North America watching and waiting for a tsunami threat to pass after a powerful earthquake rocked the northern tip of Vancouver Island. The 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit about 30 kilometers north of Sandspit, B.C., just a few minutes past 8 p.m. local time, sending tremors up Haida Gwaii and down as far as Metro Vancouver. There were about half a dozen aftershocks. Officials said it was the strongest earthquake to hit Canada in more than half a century. Neil Goodwin, a 35-year-old fishing lodge manager from Sandspit, B.C., was in his living room when the rumbling started. It was the kind of shaking that if you werent holding onto something youd be on the floor, Goodwin said. It wasnt very violent for probably the first ten seconds and then it really amped up. As the power cut out, Goodwin used the flashlight on his cellphone to find his two dogs and escape his house. He didnt have time to assess the damage or find his cat. I was just trying to get out as fast as possible, he said. Were all just waiting for the next aftershock. Goodwin drove to one of two hills designated as safety point in tsunami drills where he stood with his neighbours and watched the waves grow in size and strength. Within ten minutes pretty much 90 per cent of everyone in town was in one of the two points. In Queen Charlotte, Canadian Coast Guard Malcolm Dunderdale spent a sleepless night in darkness after the power cut off within seconds of the shaking. Gathering cell phone, mobile radios and general tsunami kits, plus blankets and pillows, Dunderdale said after the quake, which played out for what felt like as long as 30 to 45 seconds, there was nothing to do but wait. Its pretty dark out there right now, said Dunderdale about an hour after the earthquake first struck. Were all just playing it cool and waiting to see if it gets worse.
The first tsunami was to reach the west coast at Langara Island about one and a half hours after the earthquake first struck at 9:16 p.m. But the waves caused no damage. While the northern tip of B.C.s coastline remained on tsunami advisory for more than seven more hours after the earthquake, the fear of tsunami shifted to Hawaii. Emergency sirens across Hawaii alerted residents of the oncoming tsunami. A tsunami has been generated that could cause damage along coastlines of all islands in the state of Hawaii. Urgent action should be taken to protect lives and property, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said. Carla Morris, a stay-at-home mom in Kauai, Hawaii, first heard the emergency siren as she drove home from church. It continued for hours. As we passed by the WalMart and gas station, theyre filled with people headed to higher ground, Morris, 38, told the reporter in a telephone interview. Theyre just so scared. Members of Morriss church helped evacuate seniors who live near the beach. Were just praying for everyone to be safe. We dont want to see any destruction and most importantly you dont want to see any lives lost, she said. Highways and streets were clogged as residents living along the coast were ordered to seek higher ground. Honolulu Police ordered drivers to abandon their vehicles around 10 p.m. HST and begin walking to higher elevation. Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie issued an emergency proclamation about half an hour later giving emergency personnel authority to shut off water and gas mains and force evacuations. The tsunami warning was lifted around 3 a.m. for B.C., Oregon, Alaska from the West Coast/Alaska Tsunami Warning Center, but an advisory remained in place for California suggesting residents move out of the waters, off beaches and out of harbours and marinas.

Growth Disorders
Does your child seem much shorter or much taller - than other kids his or her age? It could be normal, or it could be a sign of a problem. Very slow or very fast growth can sometimes signal a gland problem or disease. The pituitary gland makes growth hormone, which stimulates the growth of bone and other tissues. Children who have too little of it may be very short. Treatment with growth hormone can stimulate growth. People can also have too much growth hormone. Usually the cause is a pituitary gland tumor, which is not cancer. Too much growth hormone can cause gigantism in children, where their bones and their body grow too much. In adults, it can cause acromegaly, which makes the hands, feet and face larger than normal. Possible treatments include surgery to remove the tumor, medicines and radiation therapy. Acromegaly Acromegaly is a long-term condition in which there is too much growth hormone and the body tissues get larger over time. Causes Acromegaly occurs in about 6 of every 100,000 adults. It is caused by abnormal production of growth hormone after the skeleton and other organs finish growing. Excessive production of growth hormone in children causes gigantism rather than acromegaly. The cause of the increased growth hormone release is usually a noncancerous (benign) tumor of the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland, which is located just below the brain, controls the production and release of several different hormones, including growth hormone. Symptoms Body odor Carpal tunnel syndrome Decreased muscle strength (weakness) Easy fatigue Excessive height (when excess growth hormone production begins in childhood) Excessive sweating Headache Hoarseness Joint pain Large bones of the face Large feet
Large hands Large glands in the skin (sebaceous glands) Large jaw (prognathism) and tongue Limited joint movement Sleep apnea Swelling of the bony areas around a joint Thickening of the skin, skin tags Widely spaced teeth Widened fingers or toes due to too much skin growth, with swelling, redness, and pain Other symptoms that may occur with this disease: Excess hair growth in females Weight gain (unintentional) Exams and Tests High growth hormone level High insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) level Spine x-ray shows abnormal bone growth Pituitary MRI may show a pituitary tumor Echocardiogram may show an enlarged heart, leaky mitral valve, or leaky aortic valve This disease may also change the results of the following tests: Fasting plasma glucose Glucose tolerance test Treatment Surgery to remove the pituitary tumor that is causing this condition usually corrects the abnormal growth hormone release in most patients. Sometimes the tumor is too large to remove completely. People who do not respond to surgery will have radiation of the pituitary gland. However, the reduction in growth hormone levels after radiation is very slow. The following medications may be used to treat acromegaly: Octreotide (Sandostatin) or bromocriptine (Parlodel) may control growth hormone release in some people. Pegvisomant (Somavert) directly blocks the effects of growth hormone, and has been shown to improve symptoms of acromegaly. These medications may be used before surgery, after surgery, or when surgery is not possible. After treatment, you will need to see your health care provider regularly to make sure that the pituitary gland is working normally. Yearly evaluations are recommended. Outlook (Prognosis) Pituitary surgery is successful in most patients, depending on the size of the tumor and the experience of the surgeon. Without treatment the symptoms will get worse, and the risk of high blood pressure, diabetes (high blood sugar), and cardiovascular disease increases. Continued Next Week

Full-body scanners used at airports can damage the insulin pump or continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) device used by diabetics, caution experts. The risk to these sensitive devices posed by scanners and the low-pressure conditions on airplanes were the focus of a report published in the journal Diabetes Technology and Therapeutics. Authors Andrew Cornish and H. Peter Chase of University of Colorado, Denver, caution that the motor of an insulin delivery pump or glucose
monitoring device may experience electromagnetic malfunctioning when passed through an airport security scanner. However, little research has been published on the potential impact of that exposure, according to a Colorado statement. People with diabetes can present a travel letter obtained from their physicians to avoid possible damage caused by exposure to imaging equipment in airports, suggest researchers.
Chewing betel quid or paan exposes half a billion people to substances that act as direct carcinogens in the mouth, scientists have revealed. Mu-Rong Chao and Chiung-Wen Hu explained that betel quid (BQ) consists of nuts from the arcea tree, sometimes combined with spices, such as cardamom or saffron, and other ingredients. Available in commercial forms, BQ is popular among people in China, India and other Asian countries, and people of Asian heritage living in the U.S. and other countries. Scientists have known for decades that chewing BQ can lead to oral cancer, and showed recently that the substances in BQ could be changed into carcinogens
in the body. The researchers explored whether there were any substances in the arcea nut that can cause cancer directly, without any need for the body to change or "activate" them. They discovered that compounds in the arcea nut can "alkylate" the genetic material DNA, causing changes that increase the risk of cancer, and they are present in betel quid in amounts high enough to do so. "Our study showed that these alkylating agents are present at levels sufficient to cause DNA damage and could potentially have adverse implications to human health, particularly in the case of the development of oral cancer for BQ chewers," they said.
Eating More Legumes May Help Lower Heart Disease Risk In Diabetics
Eating more legumes - such as beans, chickpeas or lentils - appears to improve blood sugar control and reduce estimated coronary heart disease (CHD) risk in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM), according to a new study. David J.A. Jenkins, M.D., of the University of Toronto and St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto, Canada, and colleagues conducted a randomized controlled trial of 121 patients with type 2 DM to test the effect of eating more legumes on glycemic control, serum (blood) lipid levels and blood pressure (BP). Patients were randomized to either a low-GI legume diet that encouraged patients to increase eating legumes by at least one cup a day or to increase insoluble fiber by eating whole wheat products for three months. "People with diabetes did better in terms of blood sugar control on the bean diet versus a diet without beans, which was otherwise extremely healthy," says researcher David J.A. Jenkins, MD, PhD, DSc, professor of medicine and nutrition at the University of Toronto and St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto. The bean diet lowered the predicted risk of heart disease more, too, Jenkins says. And it did so in a way that surprised him, he says. "It reduced heart disease risk predominantly because of its effect on blood pressure," he said. "In conclusion, legume consumption of approximately 190 g per day (1 cup) seems to contribute usefully to a lowGI diet and reduce CHD risk through a reduction in BP," the authors note.

Young men who eat more than three slices of cheese a day may be risking their chances of becoming fathers, a new study has revealed. Even small amounts of full-fat dairy food have been shown to dramatically impair their fertility. Harvard academics have discovered that men who eat just three portions a day had poorer quality sperm compared to others, as reported. A portion included an ounce of cheese (28g), a teaspoon of cream, a scoop of ice cream or glass of full-fat milk. The researchers believe that female hormones that occur naturally in milk may be interfering with men's ability to reproduce. Until recently, experts have been far more concerned with how women's diets are affecting their chanced of having children. But there is increasing evidence that men's lifestyles - and crucially what they eat - may be just as important.
Scientist from the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, the US, compared the diets of 189 men aged 19 to 25. None were overweight - they were all very fit and did at least one and a half hour's exercise a week. They had each filled in a questionnaire answering how often they ate dairy products, fruit, meat and other types of food during a typical week. The researchers also looked at their sperm, including how fast it traveled and its shape. They found that the sperm of men who ate more than three portions of full-fat dairy food a day was 25 percent poorer quality than those who had less. Myriam Afeiche, who led the study, explained that the female hormone estrogen in milk that had come from the cow may be affecting men's fertility. It may also be impaired by pesticides which find their way in to dairy products, she added.
Magazines in the waiting room can provide a welcome distraction before facing the dentist, but they could do more harm than good by spreading germs, infection experts have claimed. Experts insist that magazines should be thrown out or recycled after just a week and not left out to be leafed through by patients for a very long time The advice was handed out to Monica Symes, a dentist in Lyme Regis, Dorset, by an NHS infection control worker. The 65-year-old was also warned that ignoring it could lead to her failing an inspection by the Care Quality Commission. "I can't believe the magazines would pose any risk to patients," the media quoted Symes as saying. Symes, who has been practising since the past 30 years, has some magazines dating back to 2004. "Generally we try to keep up-to-date but plenty of old magazines are quite interesting," she said. The adviser, from Dorset Primary Care
Trust, also warned Symes that Blu-tack on posters in her waiting room posed a health risk if re-used. The General Dental Council said it was heavy-handed to wage war on magazines. "Providing magazines in waiting rooms for patients are a good way of helping them relax and can ease the concerns of anxious individuals," Dr John Milne, chairman of the organisation's general practice committee, said. He added that posters are used to give advice on oral health or provide information about the surgery and its services. The Care Quality Commission stressed that it has not banned magazines from waiting rooms, or set any rules about Blu-Tack. "The only time these things would be an issue would be if they were used in such a way as to compromise someone using the service - and it's pretty hard to see what these circumstances might be," a spokesman said.
Stroke is a medical emergency. Recognizing and responding immediately to the signs of stroke by calling 9-1-1 or your local emergency number can significantly improve survival and recovery. If a person is diagnosed with a stroke caused by a blood clot, doctors can administer a clot-busting drug available only at a hospital, and only within a few crucial hours after symptoms begin.
Thats why it is very important to be able to recognize the 5 warning signs of stroke and immediately call 9-1-1 or your local emergency number. Stroke can be treated. That's why it is so important to recognize and respond to the warning signs. If you experience any of these symptoms, call 9-1-1 or your local emergency number immediately.
Eating a well-done steak or hamburger could put you at a greater risk of heart disease, experts have warned. They have found that searing red meat activates harmful chemicals associated with cardiovascular disease, as reported. Professor Karen ChapmanNovakofski, of the University of Illinois and colleagues has concluded that foods cooked at very high temperatures produce end products
linked to heart disease. These byproducts "tend to end up on other tissues in the body, causing longterm damage," Chapman-Novakofski said. The study found a stronger link to heart disease from the by-products in cooking than the harmful saturated fat in food. Diabetes sufferers at risk of heart disease are warned to avoid cooking methods that leave a crust on meat.
Eating at least eight portions of fruits and vegetables every day will keep you more cheerful and optimistic about the future, scientists say. The researchers analysed surveys involving 80,000 Britons, which included questions on their diet and general feelings, according to the reporter. Each person was given a score between 0 and 10 based on their satisfaction with life. The study found that those who ate around eight portions of fruit and vegetables a day had an average score that was one point higher than people who did not eat any. The link remained even when peoples exercise levels and overall diet - both of which can influence mood - were
accounted for. Although it is not known exactly how fruit and vegetables improve wellbeing, they contain chemicals known as antioxidants, which are thought to reduce stress levels. Recently studies have found that children who eat more fruit and vegetables are less at risk of depression in later life. Andrew Oswald, of the Warwick Universitys Department of Economics, who conducted the research, said: This study has shown surprising results. We know that fruit and vegetables carry a lot of antioxidants and those protect us against attacks on the body. But how that works through into our minds and emotions, researchers have no idea.

The trend of male playback singing has changed quite significantly over the years. Gone are the days when singers were known as the voices of actors on screen. Kishore Kumar for Rajesh Khanna and Dev Anand, Mukesh for Raj Kapoor, Mohd Rafi for Shammi Kapoor, Dharmendra and so on. It was history when every second Bollywood popular song was sung by either Kumar Sanu or Udit Narayan. With the evolution of internet, the music industry was adversely impacted as the demand for music cassettes or CDs declined drastically. As a result, music directors are trying out new voices today with huge success. The long race horse is very difficult to determine but there are quite a few who have managed to grab the attention of avid listeners. Quality masters Sonu Nigam and Shaan have understandably become selective about their work. Also we get to hear voices of multi-talented guys like A.R. Rahman, Himesh Reshammiya, Farhan Akhtar, Vishal Dadlani, Adnan Sami, Lucky Ali, Daler Mehandi, Wajid and Shankar Mahadevan mostly in their own albums (movies) only. Atif Aslam, Benny Dayal, Kunal Ganjawala, Shahid Mallya, Shafqat Amanat Ali and Ash King have also been impressive in their outings and have shown a lot of promise. Here is a list of the Top 5 singers who are worthy contenders for the most popular male playback voice today:
Trained by his legendary uncle, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Rahat debuted with a masterpiece Laagi tumse mann ki lagan from the movie Paap. There was no looking back since, as he has sung a number of unbelievably sweet renditions over the last few years. Some favorites are Main Jahaan Rahoon, Jiya Dhadak Dhadak, Jag Soona Soona Laage, Bol Na Halke Halke, Teri Ore, Tere Mast Mast Do Nain, Surili Akhiyon Wale, Teri Meri Prem Kahani and the list goes on. The songs have been loved, acclaimed and appreciated by one and all. He is, arguably, the most popular and loved voice of the generation. Hope to see a lot more of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan in the near future.
KK has got arguably the most versatile voice amongst all the singers of this age. Just imagine, the voice of most recent Laapata from Ek Tha Tiger is the same voice which we heard almost 13 years ago in Tadap Tadap from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. He has given his silken touch to many classic and popular numbers like Sach Keh Raha hai Deewana, Tu Aashiqui hai, Its the time to disco, Bas Ek Pal, Kya Mujhe Pyaar Hai, Alvida, Aankhon mein teri ajab si, Khuda Jaane, Dil Ibadat, Tu Hi Meri Shab Hai, Zindagi Do Pal Ki and many more. The freshness of the voice has remained the same during all these years. Commendable!

The Actor Is Angry That His Steamy Scenes Have Been Edited Out! No actor likes seeing his role snipped This upset Arjun who couldnt
and unfortunately, Arjun Rampal was pretty upset when he saw the first print of his Prakash Jha starrer Chakravyuh. Arjun was shocked to notice that his love-making sequence with Esha Gupta was scrapped. The same scene that the director insisted on shooting was nowhere to be seen as suddenly Jha apparently had a change of heart! Not too pleased with what he saw, Arjun apparently got into a heated argument with the filmmaker over this issue is what sources reveal. Arjun always had reservations about shooting steamy scenes but Prakash Jha who always uses a certain format of on screen intimacy in his films suddenly felt the need to bring in a passionate scene between Arjun and Eshas characters. Convinced with the directors vision, both stars agreed. The scene took around three whole days to shoot and it was quite a task to make it look as authentic as possible. It was expected that this scene would be there in the film keeping in mind that Prakash believed it would fit and bring in a tender interlude in the story. But while sitting at the editing table, the scene didnt fit at all. He had to resort to snipping it out from the film. understand why Prakash shot it in the first place when he knew that it wouldnt work for his genre of films, reveals the source. Well now Arjun has to just accept it and move on!
5. Ranveer Singh
John Abraham has been given the title of the sexiest man, and well this model turned actor definitely deserves the title. His long workouts ensure that whenever his shirt comes off, his fans who think of him as Eye candy arent disappointed.

He definitely is a newcomer on the block, but his body can certainly be rated as one of the best. We were shocked to see Ranveers perfect 8 pack in Ladies vs Ricky Behl. Since then directors are making sure that his shirt comes off in every movie of his as it grabs a lot of eye balls. According to you, who has the hottest physique?

The 2013 Nissan Cube is an outlier in the marketin many ways, really and it's hard to categorize, even in a market that's become increasingly segmented. It's not quite a van, but almost; not quite a crossover wagon, but almost. One thing is for sure: It's a quirky vehicle through and through, and it's unrivaled in style and packaging within its quirky limitations, of course. It's the details that make the design, and while the rounded corners on an upright box can make the Cube look a little appliance-like, just take a closer look at the asymmetry of the windows, the beveled window frames, and flared sheetmetal, and it's anything but simple. Combine all that with lower aero work that seems to pull the Cube downward, visually, and it has a gravitas that the Scion xB never had (at least not in its current version). Inside, the Cube can feel a little too overdesigned, with a "Casual Lounge" theme that rounds the curves, leaving you feeling like you're in a Jacuzzi tub (water ripples and all). But it's fresh, and it's functional. The Cube's least charming trait may very well be how it drives. Considering its car-based underpinnings and relatively low center of mass (compared to crossovers), it's surprising it doesn't feel a little sportieror have much of a driving personality. A 1.8-liter fourcylinder produces 122 horsepower and drives the front wheels. With either the six-speed manual gearbox or the continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), the Cube can move along rapidly enough, but it's not at all a sports car, or the type of vehicle you'd fling into corners. The 2013 Nissan Cube has more space for people than you might guess from the outside, but if you need versatility, and to maximize space sometimes for larger items, you can do a lot better. Seating is one of the Cube's strengths; and in layout, inside, it's quite van-like. The seats up front are much better than what you get in the Versa or Sentra--
Autos
and of course a little higher--provided you aren't cornering that hard, as there's no significant side bolstering. The rear seat has enough space for two adults (possibly three, squeezed in), and it slides back and forth and also reclines-though not all the way. Where you get into trouble is with larger cargo, as the seatback doesn't simply flip forward or flat. Ride comfort, on the other hand, is surprisingly good in the Cube next to other small cars or the smallest compact crossovers. What there isand this probably comes as no surpriseis quite a bit of wind noise at highway speeds. Otherwise interior materials betray the Cube's sub-$20,000 price tag, although all the styling touches will probably distract you from that for a while. And the Cube is a good value for the moneyespecially considering the value of having something that's genuinely different and quirky, yet also well-equipped. Prices are a bit higher for 2013, however; with the discontinuation of the base model, there are now just S and SL trims of the Cube--and if you want a manual transmission you're stuck with the S, as the top SL is only offered with a CVT. The S includes a lot of popular features, but step up to the SL and you get automatic climate control, alloy wheels, an Intelligent Key system, Bluetooth connectivity, and an upgraded sound system that includes iPod connectivity. Beyond that, a Preferred Package that adds an SD-based navigation system with XM NavTraffic capability, plus Rockford Fosgate audio with a subwoofer, XM satellite radio, and front fog lamps. And if you want appearance extras, though, you're in luck. There are more than 40 different accessories available at the dealership, and they range from practical items like cargo organizers to custom wheels, decals, and other appearance options.

You don't have to acquire a taste for olive oil, seaweed or soya to maintain a low-fat, healthy diet. Indian cuisine can be healthy too, if it's cooked with oil and ingredients that take care of your heart and health. Ayurveda suggests you include all tastes sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter and astringent in at least one meal each day, to help balance unnatural cravings. Here are 12 foods that can help you lose weight and gain health:
Moong dal:
It is a home remedy for obesity. It mobilizes the extra fat deposits in the body allowing it to be utilized as energy for normal functions. One should start with about 10 grams or a tablespoon, taken with hot water early in the morning.
Buttermilk:
Turmeric:
Cardamom:
Curcumin, the active component of turmeric, is an object of research owing to its properties that suggest they may help to turn off certain genes that cause scarring and enlargement of the heart. Regular intake may help reduce low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or bad cholesterol and high blood pressure, increase blood circulation and prevent blood clotting, helping to prevent heart attack.
Incorporating curry leaves into your daily diet can help you lose weight. These leaves flush out fat and toxins, reducing fat deposits that are stored in the body, as well as reducing bad cholesterol levels. If you are overweight, incorporate eight to 10 curry leaves into your diet daily. Chop them finely and mix them into a drink, or sprinkle them over a meal. Garlic: An effective fat-burning food, garlic contains the sulphur compound allicin which has anti-bacterial effects and helps reduce cholesterol and unhealthy fats.
The bean sprouts are rich in Vitamin A, B, C and E and many minerals, such as calcium, iron and potassium. It is recommended as a food replacement in many slimming programmes, as it has a very low fat content. It is a rich source of protein and fibre, which helps lower blood cholesterol level. The high fibre content yields complex carbohydrates, which aid digestion, are effective in stabilising blood sugar and prevent its rapid rise after meal consumption. Honey:
Mustard oil:
It is the somewhat sour, residual fluid that is left after butter is churned. The probiotic food contains just 2.2 grams of fat and about 99 calories, as compared to whole milk that contains 8.9 grams fat and 157 calories. Regular intake provides the body with all essential nutrients and does not add fats and calories to the body. It is thus helpful in weight loss.
Chilies:
This is a thermogenic herb that increases metabolism and helps burn body fat. Cardamom is considered one of the best digestive aids and is believed to soothe the digestive system and help the body process other foods more efficiently.
Cabbage:

Whenever you stop at traffic lights, tighten your thighs and bottom, over and over again. You will firm your leg muscles, boost blood flow (thus preventing the pins-and-needles sensation that tends to attack your bottom when youve been sitting in a car seat for too long) and give yourself something to focus on. 2. Quick Exercise First Thing in the Morni
Before you get out of bed in the morning, do the clam. Lie on your back, bring your feet together, and open your knees out to the sides. Then, as you exhale, lift your knees brining them together. Lower and repeat these exercise 10 to 15 times and youll strengthen your inner thighs. 3. Exercise While Cooking
Get up, place your palms against your desk and do a series of donkey kicks when you find yourself falling asleep at your keyboard. Bend one knee, flex that foot and kick your leg back, as if you were a donkey kicking someone behind you. Alternate legs for 15 kicks in total. Then return to work refreshed with a stronger bottom. 6. Dance!

San Francisco capped a wild postseason ride by beating Detroit Tigers 4-3 in 10 innings last Sunday to complete a four-game sweep and be crowned World Series champion for the second time in three years. Marco Scutaro, the most valuable player in the National League Championship Series, was again the hero for the Giants, cracking a sharply hit single into shallow center to bring in Ryan Theriot with the winning run. Having survived six do-or-die elimination games in the National League Division and Championship Series, the Giants closed out the season in ruthless style reeling off seven consecutive wins. "What made them so special was they were such an unselfish group, they just loved each other and played for each other and the fans and had a never say die attitude," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said at the trophy presentation. "It's amazing what a group of guys who play like a team can accomplish." Big-hitting Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval was named the series' Most Valuable Player (MVP). The Venezuelan batted .500 with four runs batted in, including a three-homer game in the series opener. Sandoval's Game One heroics set the tone for the Giants' stunning and perhaps unexpected victory. The Giants won that game 8-3 as Sandoval became just the fourth person to hit three home runs in a World Series game, joining Babe Ruth, Albert Pujols and Reggie Jackson in the record books. No team has ever erased a 3-0 deficit to win a World Series and the Tigers dug the hole a little deeper when they fell behind 1-0 in the second inning. Hunter Pence doubled to the wall in deep center for Giants first hit then trotted home when Belt drilled a triple into the right field corner to silence the chilled sellout crowd. But Tigers fans were back on their feet cheering wildly in third when Cabrera took a 1-1 offering from Giants ace Matt Cain and crushed a towering tworun homer into the right field bleachers to give Detroit their first lead of the series. Posey answered with a two-run blast in sixth that slipped just inside the left field foul pole but the fireworks continued in the bottom of the inning with Young launching a solo shot over the right field wall to tie the game at 3-3. The Tigers had a glorious opportunity to take control in the eighth when Avisail Garcia was issued a lead off walk with their big bats lined up to drive in the go ahead run. But Giants reliever Jeremy Affeldt defused the threat striking out Cabrera, Fielder and Young.
Sergio Romo struck out leadoff hitter Austin Jackson, pinch hitter Don Kelly and Tiger slugger Miguel Cabrera to complete the triumph.

England will be without their most potent attacking weapon for the Test against Fiji on November 10, after Chris Ashton was handed a suspension. The Saracens wing attended a hearing on Wednesday night after receiving three yellow cards so far this season, and was hit with a one game ban. National coach Stuart Lancaster and his assistants are now planning for life without the predatory finisher for the first of their four QBE Internationals at Twickenham. Ashton has made an encouraging start with his new club since a summer move from Northampton with the England coaches particularly impressed by a try he scored in the Heineken Cup demolition of Edinburgh. However, he was sin-binned in the games against London Irish and Exeter, and a citing from the match against the Saints last Saturday counts as another yellow card. The 25-year-old cross-code international has scored 15 tries in his 26 England appearances to date, although he has not touched down in his last nine Tests. The loss is a further setback for

on November 10 with knee injuries while Jonathan Joseph is rated as doubtful after damaging his ankle at the weekend. In the meantime, Ashton has been urged by the RFU's disciplinary panel to work on his tackle technique after effectively receiving three yellow cards for dangerous play this season. Panel chairman Judge Jeff Blackett said: 'We are concerned about his tackling technique and encouraged that he and his coaches work to correct it. 'We were guided by the IRB recommendation that a one week suspension was appropriate for totting up offences. 'The player was not released back to his club by England for Saracens' game on Sunday, November 4 so it would be inappropriate to commence the suspension immediately. 'We have therefore deferred commencement until Sunday November 4 so he misses a game he would have played in. 'We would like to add that Chris Ashton took a realistic and mature approach to proceedings and expressed genuine contrition.'
Lancaster, who is already without another member of the first-choice back-three unit Ben Foden, who is recovering from ankle surgery. In addition, Northampton hooker Dylan Hartley appears certain to miss the entire autumn campaign with a knee injury, while Courtney Lawes and Jonathan Joseph are seemingly destined to be unavailable for the Fiji game.
The path is now clear for Ugo Monye to win a recall to the starting XV, with Charlie Sharples of Gloucester on course to claim the other wing place. Ashton will be available for England's autumn Tests against Australia, South Africa and New Zealand but he joins a lengthening list of absentees from the Fiji game. Dylan Hartley and Courtney Lawes have both been ruled out of the match
