Dear PBC Family,

One of my students at A-B asked me, " I have heard talk of Alderson-Broaddus splitting with the
Baptist affiliation, and am curious as to the impact this would have on BCM." I have had similar questions asked to me concerning Philippi Baptist Church as well. I then responded to her in the following way:

Below you will find the first paragraph as the short answer to your question. You got me to thinking so I have also included the long version! "Our privilege to serve the students through Baptist Campus Ministries at A-B College will continue no matter how the representation on our Board of Directors will be selected." Now the long version: 'I would like to respond to the talk of Alderson-Broaddus College splitting with our Baptist affiliation. We can no more split from our affiliation than a son can split from his affiliation with his family without changing his name. Our name comes from our dear Emma Alderson, a Baptist laywoman here in West Virginia and our other name was picked by a Baptist preacher, Rev. Edward Jefferson Willis, in honor of the civil war Baptist preacher, Rev. William Francis Ferguson Broaddus. Our Baptist roots not only run deep, our Baptist connections still continued to grow and flourish in different but significant ways. "In 1950, a young Baptist pastor, Richard E. Shearer, accepted the offer of the board of trustees to assume the presidency of Alderson-Broaddus College. At 30 he was thought to be the youngest college president in the country. Under Shearer the fortunes of the college improved dramatically, ushering in two decades of growth. It was during Shearer's 32-year tenure that the modern campus and identity emerged."1 In his entry in Who's Who in American Education, Dr. Shearer stated his philosophy: "Education gives power, but it takes good religion to give it direction. I believe that sentiment still prevails on this campus." From where I sit, the college is not requesting a split with our Baptist affiliation. It is requesting to reduce the Board of Director's representation appointed by the West Virginia Baptist Convention to give the college more opportunity to select trustees with a more accurate skill set to match our current needs. We are moving forward but it does not mean we are turning away from our roots. I see it as on opportunity to expand while keeping our core values.' I also wanted to include a statement that is now present on A-B's website to help clarify the recent changes for legal purposes. (see following page)

"Announcement Regarding Church Affiliation

Alderson-Broaddus College and the West Virginia Baptist Convention have officially taken steps to mutually affirm a change in their legal relationship. As the A-B community has been aware, in April of 2012, alumnus and Board Chair Ron Burbick appointed a six-person task force to review and update the Alderson-Broaddus College charter and by-laws. This action was in response to a recommendation by a consultant with the Association of Governing Boards at the February board retreat. This recommendation included a change in size and composition of the A-B board of trustees. Chaired by A-B alumna and trustee Jean Denny Cunningham, the task force met throughout the summer, and as a result of their discussion and deliberations, in October, 2012, the A-B College board took the first step toward implementing the AGB recommendations by unanimously approving a resolution to pursue the dissolution of the legal relationship between A-B College and the West Virginia Baptist Convention, pending concurrence of the Convention. This is to specifically include fiduciary responsibility, board composition, and other legally binding obligations or oversight. The resolution also affirmed an ongoing relationship with the Convention on a level of personal, social, and religious affiliation, as well as with American Baptist Churches, USA. In response to this, the West Virginia Baptist Convention acted upon the resolution at their annual meeting at Huntington, West Virginia, on October 19, 2012, with a proposed amendment of the WVBC charter and by-laws. This amendment was approved with the required 2/3 majority vote by the delegates in attendance. With these actions completed, President Rick Creehan and Chairman Ron Burbick anticipate that the A-B College task force will have a path to complete its work with a final proposed charter and bylaws revision to be voted upon at the Spring, 2013 board meeting." I've said and quoted all that to say in the same manner as BCM, "Our privilege to serve the students, faculty and staff through Philippi Baptist Church will continue no matter how the representation on the A-B Board of Directors will be selected." After visiting Dr. Shearer in the hospital last week, I will allow him to have the last word. He was reminding me of the founding churches, First Baptist Church, Richmond Va. and Old Greenbrier Baptist Church, Alderson WV that birthed A-B College. He went on to say this: "Although Philippi Baptist is not the mother church of Alderson-Broaddus College, we have adopted her as our own!." May we continue to be a part of helping give Godly direction to our campus on top of the hill!

A Man with a Servants Heart Olin Campbell grew up in a non-church family, but on his own, he attended the Silent Grove church, where Minnie Carder was his Sunday School teacher. We had an old-fashioned country preacher, he reports, who taught us to trust in God. When I was about fifteen, I was baptized in a very cold creek in Nestorville, and over the years, that experience has become more and more meaningful. One of five sons in a Barbour County family, Olin attended schools here, then went to WVU for a degree in Mechanical Engineering. From there he went to Long Island, New York, where he worked for thirty-nine years for Sperry Gyroscope Company (later to become part of Unysis). He was the only one of the five boys to leave Barbour County. While living on Long Island, he attended a Baptist church and was invited to counselor- training sessions for a Billy Graham crusade. It was there, through the intervention of a friend, that he met Marj, also a Billy Graham counselor. They were married in 1957 and came back to Philippi occasionally to visit Olins family and to build a vacation home. With the prompting of one of their daughters, they bought some of the Campbell family land, and in 1995, after their retirement, they added to the house and moved permanently to Sand Run Road. Not content to occupy rocking chairs on the porch, they opened two businesses, Marj at Mountain Treasurers and Olin at The Office Store. With his work on those buildings and the apartments therein, plus his work at the church and on the homes of two of his children, Olin is far from most of us would consider retirement. Over the years and whenever they were in town, Olin and Marj had visited Philippi Baptist Church, so it was natural for them to become members. We like the people here, Olin says. Its easy to relate to them and their focus on the Scriptures, their dedication to the Lord. The Campbells, says Olin, especially appreciate the Wednesday evening Bible study sessions. Wednesday night services have always been a part of our lives. Here at Philippi Baptist, the group is small but very important to us. We just wish many more people would take advantage of this great opportunity. It gives us a chance to reflect on what God has done and continues to do for us, and through the discussions we gain on-the-spot insight into the Scriptures. We learn from each other. He gestures with both hands. I just cant imagine going from day to day without the Lord. Its hard for the rest of us to imagine Philippi Baptist Church without the Campbells and their endless service to this congregation and to the community.

CHILDRENS RALLY
WVBC Childrens Rally (kindergarten 5th grade) is Saturday, November 3rd from 9am-3pm at Parchment Valley Conference Center in Ripley, W. The theme is Gods Olympics: Running the Christian Race. Cost is $12 per person, which the church will pay. If interested in going, please let Koreen know by October 14. Transportation will be provided also. Theme t-shirts are available for $10, which you must prepay by October 14th.

Stewardship
The theme this year for the Every Member Canvass is Saints Alive! Living Generously, Pastor Jon has suggested that we take our guidance from 1 Corinthians 16:1-4 wherein the Apostle Paul challenges the believers in Corinth: Now concerning the collection for the saints: You should follow the directions I gave to the churches in Galatia. On the first day of the week, each of you is to put aside and save whatever extra you earn, so that collections need not be taken when I come. And when I arrive, I will send any who you approve with letters to take your gift to Jerusalem. If it seems advisable that I should go also, they will accompany me. Let us contemplate these words from Paul, and the example of our Lord Jesus, as we prayerfully consider our 6 tithes and offerings, as well as our time and service commitments, to the Lord for 2013.

Arts Council will sponsor Carol Ervins book signing Nov. 24

Carol Ervin will talk about Internet publishing and sign copies of her novel, The Girl on the Mountain, at Mountain Treasures in Philippi on Saturday, Nov. 24, from 1-3 p.m. The book talk and presentation is being sponsored by the Barbour County Arts and Humanities Council. The council and Marj Campbell, owner of Mountain Treasures, will provide refreshments. All are invited to attend. Anyone who has purchased a book may bring it to the shop for the book signing. Marj also has copies for sale.

We are privileged to welcome Lucretia Moyer as our new church secretary! Her husband and two children moved from Parkersburg last year and have been a great addition to the Philippi Community! Our office hours continue to be 9am to 1pm, Monday through Friday. She can be reached through the church contact information on the front of our newsletter!
