Title: Little Bird Tales Topic: Technology to enhance reading comprehension and story telling

Stage 1- Desired Results NETS Technology Standards: NETS 1- Facilitate and Inspire Students Learning and Creative Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments. Teachers: a . promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness. d. model collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in learning with students, colleagues, and others in face-to-face and virtual environments. NETS 2- Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessment incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitude identified in the NETS S Teachers: a. design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote students learning and creativity. c. customize and personalize learning activities to address students diverse learning styles, working strategies, and abilities using digital tools and resources. NETS 3- Model Digital-Age Work and Learning Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work process representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society. Teachers: a. demonstrate fluency in technology systems and the transfer of current knowledge to new technologies and situations. b. collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success and innovation. c. communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital-age media and formats. d. model and facilitate effective use of current and emerging digital tools to locate, analyze, evaluate, and use information resources to support research and learning.

NETS 4- Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility Teachers understand global societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional practices. Teachers: a. advocate, model, and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology, including respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of sources. b. addresses the diverse needs of all learners by using learner-centered strategies providing equitable access to appropriate digital tools and resources. c. promote and model digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to the use of technology and information.

NETS 5- Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership Teachers continuously improve their professional practice, model lifelong learning, and exhibit leadership in their school and professional community by promoting and demonstrating the effective use of digital tools and resources. Teachers: a. participate in local and global learning communities to explore creative applications of technology to improve student learning. Understandings Using a Web 2.0 tool can enhance student creativity and confidence Students can play an active role in their learning by using a recording digital resource. All student learning styles can be met by allowing the students to use a technology resource that interest them. This will make learning the material presented more enjoyable and meaningful to them. To allow students to work together on a digital project enhances classroom community and social skills. Allowing students to showcase their work will create an environment where the students take pride in their work and make the students want to produce products of a greater quality. Reading can be enjoyable and not something that they have to do. Essential Questions Overarching Questions: -How does incorporating technology enhance the information for a student? -How does listening to a recording of himself/herself improve self-confidence?

Teachers will know -How to set up an account for Little Bird Tales. -Understand how to record and save online audio on Little Bird Tales. -How to upload students artwork to Little Bird Tales.

Teachers will be able to -Set up an account for themselves and their students. -Create audio books from students recordings and artwork. -Add text to the students artwork. -Showcase students audio books from Little Bird Tales.

Stage 2- Assessment Evidence Performance Tasks: Goal: To learn how to give students another option for creating and sharing stories and to enhance reading comprehension. Role: To teach your students how to effectively use a Web 2.0 tool and to show improved understanding of the reading standards. Audience: The target audience will be the students in your classroom. Situation: Participants are to create a class book using Little Bird Tales. The teacher will upload students artwork and have the students record a message about their artwork. Product and Performance and Purpose: You need to design a class book and email me the finished book at toni.bowers@appling.k12.ga.us. Then place your completed book on Edmodo or class wiki to be shared with other teachers and students. Standards and Criteria for Success: The class book must meet the following standards. Name: Class Book Title: CATEGORY Clarity of the audio book Book includes artwork Creativity of book Excellent (3pts) All students could be heard very clearly. Most to all students had artwork uploaded and recorded message. Book had an interesting storyline and students used sounds or a different voice than their own. Good (2pts) Most of the students could be heard clearly. Less than half of the students had artwork and a recorded message. Book had an interesting story line, but students spoke monotone. Poor (1 pt) Most of the audio book couldnt be understood. Book did not include artwork or recorded messages. Book had no interesting storyline and students spoke monotone. Total Points: Other Evidence: -Participants will take questionnaire at the beginning of class to determine their knowledge of Web 2.0 tools. -Participants will create a class book using Little Bird Tales. -Participants will complete a self-evaluation on their class book.

Stage 3- Learning Plan W: Hook Question- How can students create a story/book without paper and pencil? H: Participants will observe a short story created in Little Bird Tales by a student to understand what kinds of books can be created to show comprehension of a standard. (http://littlebirdtales.com/tales/view/story_id/65247) E: Complete the survey to establish a level of understanding with each participant. R: Participants will discuss the questions and reflect their understanding of the questions on the questionnaire. E: Participants will be able to explore Little Bird Tales to create a short recording. They will then be able to transfer their knowledge of Little Bird Tales to their classrooms. T: The participants will participate in the following activities: Visual-Example of an audio book made by a student. Kinesthetic-Class working as a group to create a class book Interpersonal-Group/Class discussion Musical-Final audio book Intrapersonal-Work of the individuals on the book Linguistic-Creation of a class book O: Participants will be exposed to the content in the following sequence: Day 1 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Day 2 1. 2. 3. 4. Have a group discussion about the class books. Watch examples of class books. Discuss if Little Bird Tales could be used in other areas of the curriculum. Allow participants to share ideas about how Little Bird Tales could be used in the other areas of the curriculum. 5. Allow for final questions and assistance in uploading book to Edmodo or class wiki. 6. Participants take the end of class survey. Questionnaire Discuss answers and introduce Little Bird Tales with example of student book. Discuss how to create an account on Little Bird Tales. Discuss how to upload artwork onto Little Bird Tales and the best type of image to be uploaded. Discuss how to record a message for the artwork. Discuss how to add text to the artwork. Allow remaining time to practice and explore Little Bird Tales and to answer questions.

Steps to Creating an Account on Little Bird Tales 1. Go to www.littlebirdtales.com 2. Click on Create an Account 3. Type in first name, last name, email address, and search for Appling County Primary School 4. Click Create Account

Steps to Creating a Tale from Little Bird Tales 1. Sign-in to your account 2. Click on Create a New Tale 3. Upload the first picture from your picture file 4. Record the message 5. Type in the text 6. Click Save 7. Repeat steps 3-6 until Tale is finished 8. Listen to you newly created class book

Name/Title of Class Book: Use the scale below to rank your class book quality/content. The class book communicated the topic/subject I wanted to communicate. The student recordings were easy to hear. It was easy for me to upload my students artwork. I was able to easily share my class book on Edmoto or my class wiki. The overall quality of my class book was Excellent Good Fair Poor
