Pure Bible 5Ws John 12-17 On board: www.blessedwitharrows@blogspot.com , jbrackett7712@gmail.com I.

Aim today on board- As Christians, our goal in bible study is to grow closer to the Lord by applying His Word. a. Goal not to fill file folders of bible knowledge in our brain. Our gray matter may expand but nothing else will change and the change we are looking for is spiritual. b. Learning methods of bible study- method we will look at today is the 5Ws- who, what, when, where, why? II. Intro a. Who I am i. Church member, married 12 years, four children, at home with them b. What my quals are- laity, like you, like John (no degree), member of BSF 10 years last 5 of which I taught the class- 250+, 8 studies, expository c. When did my journey with bible study begini. Convo at work, questions arose I could not answer ii. Misuse of scripture occurring I could not address iii. Frustration, prayer for a way to study iv. Beth Moore, small group, wanted more, found BSF d. Where is my journey currently taking me i. I resigned after my 5th year, God is moving me in this season to focus on the disciples under my own roof, see where my church might need me ii. Husband and I teach wee shine, baptism aid, able to cover for case e. Why I am excited to be here i. I have seen first-hand and witnessed it in hundreds of lives over the years ii. That true transformation occurs only through diligent bible study and application iii. Mention application b/c filling file folders in your brain is good but applying what you are learning, seeing its relevance in your life and seeing how God uses it in your life is what draws you closer to him, where transformation begins, where conviction stirs, good stuff iv. I am thrilled with the emphasis on teaching the congregation how to be disciples, how to use their bibles, all of that points to a deeper relationship with God, being secure of our God given purpose, discovering our gifts and growing the kingdom. v. You have been learning from Case tools you can use to aid you in your bible study III. 5Ws (who, what, when, where, why) great tool as study the Bible- use for a whole book of the bible, for several chapters, just one or part of one! IV. Today Look at John 12-17 as a whole, I am going to move forward assuming youve done your homework by simply reading the chapters a. Do your homework, begin where you can, dont expect to be spoon fed everything, bible study takes effort like anything else V. Large passage, great precursor to introducing yourself to the material, giving a broad understanding VI. Not for grasping the fine details though VII. Good method, read through the chapters, then go back and use this 5W tool to make sure you have a grasp for what is going on in the section as a whole 1

X. XI. II. 5 Ws I.

Then go back and start looking at shorter passages in more detail, can also use this tool for that So John 12-17- hopefully your bible has subheadings, quickly glancing just at those in Ch. 12 see Jesus anointed at Bethany, Jesus predicts his death, Ch. 13 Jesus predicts peters denial, Ch. 17 see Jesus prays for himself and his disciples, move onward from that Ch. 18 (next week) Jesus is arrested- so we have in these chapters the last week of Jesus life next events are his arrest, trial and crucifixion Ch. 12 ends Jesus public ministry and from 13-17 he tightens his circle to just his apostles for last teaching, encouragement, predictions, and then prayer. So lets start our 5 Ws for this section

II.

Who? 1. If you have a study bible, then there is typically an intro/outline of the book in the beginning and this can help you answer the who? 2. Basics you know 3. We know who was writing this text- John the apostle- apostle vs. disciples, Jesus had hundreds of disciples, his band of 12 he referred to his disciples- and they are also referred to as apostles, when you hear apostles, referring to the 12, you and I are disciples but not apostles, 4. John the apostle is the author 5. Who is he writing to? He is writing to all- (Matthew to Jews, mark and Luke to gentilesnon Jews) John is presenting the life of Jesus in his gospel so that unbelievers will come to faith in him and believers will grow in their faith in him as the messiah and the son of God descended from heaven. Flip Ch. 20:30-31 Read 6. Who are the main people found in this passage- speaking/interacting? i. Jesus, disciples 12, Martha, Mary, Lazarus, crowds of Jews 12:9, v. 10 chief priests, Pharisees vs. 19, Greeks vs. 20 of 12, ii. Point something out, notice Jewish chief priests, his own people, vs. 9-12 they want to kill laz b/c his rising from the dead drew more people to Jesus, vs. 19 Pharisees are mad b/c quote the whole world is going after him they want Jesus dead, they have never received him, why? Dont want to lose their power and position iii. John sets up a wonderful contrast showing the response to Jesus by the priests and Pharisees, and the gentiles- the Greeks, who want to see him- genuinely seeking him, Jesus ministry is to the Jews, disciples later will go out to the gentiles, peter and later Paul (not part of the 12) iv. More of the whos- God vs. 28 still in 12 now from 13-17 the only whos are Jesus and the 12 disciples What? 1. Lets first look at (remind ourselves of) what johns purpose is for writing this gospel and how he is accomplishing it. i. We know that Johns goal in even writing another gospel account Is found in Ch. 20:30-31 Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. This gives us whats Johns purpose is.

ii. Johns focus is on the divinity of Christ, Jesus is God and Jesus alone is the way to salvation, John 14:6, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the father except through me. iii. What is the general outline and how does this section fit in. 1. John introduces in Ch. 1:1-18 the Word, the divine nature of Jesus, He is God 2. From 1:19-12:50- John gives us the account of Jesus public ministry and highlights 7 miracles that Jesus did, just 7, his power is revealed in increasing measure, the first miracle mentioned is Jesus changing water to wine and the last is raising Lazarus from the dead 3. John then transitions to Jesus private ministry to his disciples from 1317 4. And then 18-21 give the account from johns vantage point on his arrest, trial, crucifixion, resurrection, reinstating of peter and ascension. 2. Now, my first thought when I see the word What is Whats going on, but need the context so your what makes sense- to see in Ch. 12-17 what is going on, lets skim the subheadings by chapter. i. 12- Jesus anointed by Mary at Bethany 1. Luke Ch. 7:36-50 is the anointing of Jesus by a sinful woman, different anointing- different Mary, this is Martha and Lazarus sister Mary this time. You can find some interesting commentary on the differences as well. ii. 12- Jesus triumphal entry iii. 12- Jesus predicts his death iv. 12- The Jews continue in their unbelief, prophecy from Isaiah given v. 13-Jesus washes his disciples feet vi. 13- Jesus predicts his betrayal vii. 13-Jesus predicts peters denial viii. 14-Jesus comforts his disciples ix. 14-Jesus the way to the father x. 14-Jesus promises the Holy Spirit xi. 15- the vine and the branches-another discourse showing relationship between Jesus and his redeemed people xii. 15 the world hates the disciplesxiii. 16- the work of the holy spirit xiv. 16-the disciples grief will turn to joy xv. 17- prayer, Jesus prays for himself, his disciples, all believers 3. So that answers what, looking solely at content 4. What stands out to you? i. Ch. 12 ends his public ministry, ends it with his entry and with his close friends Mary, Martha and Lazarus ii. Ch. 13-17 he is focused solely on his disciples iii. What is something you glean from this? Something I gleaned was that iv. He has been with these men the most the past 3 years v. He knows there will be a window where they will be confused and devastated vi. He knows they will need encouragement and lots of it, so that once he is arrested and crucified, and they run, peter denies, Judas hangs himself, they will be to put it lightly forlorn, afraid, confused3

III.

5. Short period few days, critical, i. He is preparing them, shows compassion, care, consideration, eternal perspective but also meeting the needs of the moment ii. What comfort does this passage bring to you? iii. You know Christ is with you and with me, his word offers comfort and care and guidance, God can use it to help me and meet my needs at this moment. iv. Anyone find that a verse they read in the morning pops up to minister to them later in the day or in the following days v. Importance of bible study not just to fill file folders in your brain of information vi. Bible study, reading Gods words to you, is the way God speaks to you. vii. It is the only source of truth viii. When the tape player begins in your head listing your failures, ix. When troubles of this life or the current world climate starts to blot out hope, x. True hope is found here, and it is here God ministers to you. xi. When we neglect Gods word, we not only have empty file folders, we know less about our father and creator, we miss the bigger opportunity to be ministered to xii. Take your time when you read, dig deep, pray, meditate, memorize xiii. Remember thinking that just reading the whole bible through would be such an accomplishment. I know of people so proud b/c they sat down and over a weekend read the whole bible- thats great. But you miss a ton. I know from experience, the more I study the more I realize that Gods word is like an onion with infinite layers, you slowly peel away layers superficially and you realize there are more and more layers, there is more and more to understand and apply. You may come back to John 17 6 months from now and it will speak to you in a completely different way xiv. The bible is alive, its Gods living word, you cannot exhaust it. xv. When I was teaching Isaiah a couple years ago- I was listening to Walk Kaiser, he is on the board of BSF and he was giving a lecture at the billy graham institute and I received a copy of it- Dr. Kaiser is a past president of Gordon Conwell theological seminary and a world renowned OT scholar- he said, he realizes even though he knows so much, he understands how much he still doesnt know. xvi. So the good news is, bible study is a lifelong process, you are never too old or too young to begin studying and your creator will use it to minister to you. 11. As Christians, our goal in bible study is to grow closer to the Lord by applying his Word. When? 1. http://bible.org/article/passover-time-jesus 2. Easy one, b/c scripture is very clear 3. This is the week leading up to Jesus death 4. Vs. 1 of 12, 6 days before the Passover 5. Timeline here: 6. Friday Jesus arrives in Bethany and Tuesday is anointed at Bethany, 6 days before Passover, which was celebrated on Friday- that is when the remaining Passover lambs were slaughtered 7. Sunday Jesus has his triumphal entry 8. Monday- clearing of the temple 9. Tuesday- Jesus is anointed by Mary (Luke- different annointing) 4

IV.

10. On Thursday Jesus ate the Passover meal with his disciples, he instituted the Lords supper at the end of this meal, he left to go to the Garden Of Gethsemane and he was arrested late Thursday night and was crucified on Friday- you will study that in the coming weeks 11. Now interesting fact: I only know to tell you this from teaching John in the past but 12. Notice that I said earlier that Passover was celebrated on Friday traditionally and Jesus had his Passover on Thursday, why? And how do I know that, well the bible tells us he did and 13. Some say this is the Passover meal, some say its not, just a meal 14. Most agree it is the Passover meal, Thursday evening, Jesus crucified Friday afternoon 15. In ch. 18 of John, priests go to see pilot, Jesus has been taken to him 16. They refuse to enter praetorium to avoid ceremonial defilement so they can eat the Passover, thats a Friday. 17. We know Jesus and his disciples had a Passover feast and that it was before his crucifixion, the last supper, had to be on a Thursday 18. How to reconcile 19. The Jews had two methods of reckoning days i. Jews from northern part of Israel (incl. Galilee, where Jesus most of the 12 were from) counted days sunrise to sunrise, Pharisees used this method too ii. Jews in the southern region of Israel counted days sunset to sunset iii. Would include the Sadducees (who of necessity lived in the vicinity of Jerusalem b/c of their connection with the temple) iv. Prob. Confusing at times like our diff. time zones, daylight sav. Time v. Had practical benefits during Passover, allowing feast to be eaten on two consec. Days vi. Would have eased the congestion in Jerusalem vii. 2 mill or so people flooding in, not all had lambs sacrificed in temple on one day viii. SO being Galilean, Jesus and the 12 would have viewed Passover day as running from sunrise on Thursday to sunrise on Friday, eaten their Passover meal Thursday evening. ix. Jewish leaders, Sadducees, would have viewed it as beginning at sunset on Thursday and ending sunset Friday and would have eaten their Passover meal Friday evening x. Interesting fact, Passover lambs would have been slain for the Friday evening meal the same time Jesus was being crucified, we know from timetable given that it was in the afternoon Jesus was crucified xi. So this meal, very likely was last supper xii. John is giving detail that the other authors did not with the foot washing xiii. All the other gospels pick up after, John alone gives us this detail 20. So there is a lot of info for When, which takes us to Where? Where? 1. Bethany, Jerusalem 2. Good time to use your bible maps to see where Jesus is. Notice the proximity of Bethany to Jerusalem. 3. We have our who, what, when and where, last of the ws is why?

V.

VI.

Why? 1. Now, Johns focus is on the divinity of Christ, Jesus is God and Jesus alone is the way to salvation, John 14:6, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the father except through me. 2. We have answered some of the whys already 3. We answered why john included this in his gospel- he is providing evidence of Jesus deity so that the reader may believe and have life in Jesus name 4. We know why Jesus did what he did- fulfilling prophecy, offering himself as the Passover lamb, preparing his disciples for his death and their future ministry 5. And weve discussed why this matters to us today- we are seeking a closer relationship with Christ and applying what we learn helps us to do that 6. also matters to us as Christians, b/c if we are not convinced of the deity of Jesus Christ we cannot properly evangelize, minister to, or guide those who are lost to their only hope for salvation 7. Bible study prepares you for reaching out to others 8. Those in your homes, in your workplaces, in your church, in your neighborhood 9. Why do this? Why study, why apply, why reach out? B/c you have the truth in your grasp, you can offer that truth to others to claim as their own as well. 10. Real truth offers real hope and there is a real second coming of a real Christ coming, this world we are in will pass away, our lives here are important but they point to a more important reality of eternity. People need to understand that the temporary is truly temporary- our society has no concept of an eternal perspective, as Christians we must be mindful of our eternity with Christ and therefore guide others in the same direction 11. Remember our goal is to grow closer in relationship to God, our best means of doing so, is through application of pure bible study. Website, notes, resource list
