What should be the function of our streets?

Streets are not just for vehicles, they are also places where people live, work and spend time shopping and socialising. Streets are vital for the economy moving people and goods from place to place Streets need to be safe and not daunting or unpleasant for people walking and cycling We aim to make our streets more liveable spaces; will lower speed limits help achieve this vision?

Why set lower speed limits?

Numerous studies demonstrate that lower speeds are safer Higher speeds cause more accidents, and more severe injuries from accidents At 20 mph there is a 2.5% chance of being fatally injured, compared to a 20% chance at 30 mph 20 mph zones and limits were brought in by the Government in 1992 to improve road safety
