UPCOMING FALL AND SPRING EVENTS

Fall Oreo Pudding Cup Sale LHS Holiday Candle fundraiser Second Mr. Julius Caesar Quiz Saturnalia Banquet 3 Annual Lord of the Rings Marathon Latin Regional Forum
rd

Well, we all survived the epic 22-hour Harry Potter movie marathon this past Friday and Saturday, and I think everyone had a very good time. This was very likely the longest marathon well ever do, unless one day we combine it with the LotR with the Hobbit series. *shudder* The new layout for the event worked very well, and the food and prizes were, I believe, enjoyed by all. Theres always room for improvement in anything, and I ask all members to let me know how we can make the event even better for the Lord of the Rings marathon on January 26th. At a mere 14 hours, that event should be childs play now.

It is important to fight and fight again, and keep fighting, for only then can evil be kept at bay though never quite eradicated.

We are officially the LHS Booster Club!

As of Friday afternoon, the final paperwork was completed with Bank of America and our parent sponsor, Marcia Thornton, to turn the LHS into a booster organization, which will greatly free up the red tape as we do fundraising and LHS events.

Fundraising and The Forum3 Yearbook

This month LHS has decided to once again do the Oreo cup fundraiser. This will be the first of two Oreo cup fundraisers we do this year. The proceedings we receive will go to both States and the yearbook fund. This being said, we need to do our best to sell as many cups as we can. But before we sell them, we have to make them, so be ready to become Roman slaves once more! Also, if anybody has any ideas on the yearbook page

Regionals Is Approaching!
By Mariah Thornton Make sure you are asking questions and getting started on your projects NOW! All information on projects will be posted in one of the clear bins in the front of the classroom. When doing projects, rely on the instructions to confirm you are following their procedure so you will not get disqualified. If you have never been to Regionals, it will consist of a test, project, and Olympica. Again if you need any help with project information or assistance please see one of the LHS officers or Mr. Earle.

LHS Holiday Candle Sale

Very soon, well be doing our main fundraiser for LHS, the candle sale. Its effortless, and is a terrific way to raise capital for the LHS. I ask each of our 63 members to at least sell one itemdoing that will raise hundreds, all of which will benefit our student members.

(spread?) please come to me or Mr. Earle and let us know what you are thinking. LHS is also interested in getting as much coverage as we can this year, so spread the word on whats going on!

college level Latin. Several of my former students had the great fortune of learning from her, and I only wish more of my students, current and future, would have had the chance to know such a great teacher and friend.

In memoriam
By Guy Earle On Friday afternoon, a colleague called me to let me know some very tragic news: Dr. Ava Chitwood, the Chair of the USF Classics department, passed away unexpectedly at age 58. She was my former teacher, who in the past 16 years came to be a mentor and a dear friend. Dr. Chitwood took an active part when we hosted Regionals in 2009 and 2010, and was always enthusiastic about the involvement of pre-college students in Classics. We met every few months to chat about what was new, and sought ways to bridge the gap between high school and the

LHS Hoodie Update:

We are still currently waiting on the LHS hoodies to get done, but we should have them soon. Once they come in, I will let all my classes know. A second chance to order a hoodie will come right after Christmas break.

Roman marble coffin sells for 96,000

By BBC News in October 2012
The 7ft (2.1m) sarcophagus was being used as a trough to stand flowers in, until its significance was recognised by auction valuer Guy Schwinge. Mr Schwinge described how he saw the coffin "peeping out from under some bushes" during a routine valuation. Experts from the British Museum have estimated the "As I drew closer I realised I was looking at a Roman sarcophagus of exceptional quality," he said. The owners were "utterly delighted" with the sale, Mr Schwinge, of Duke's in Dorchester, discovered the family had acquired the sarcophagus almost 100 years ago at auction. 'Utterly delighted' An auction catalogue from 1913 shows the coffin was imported to Britain by Queen Victoria's surveyor of pictures, Sir John Robinson, who lived at Newton Manor in Swanage, Dorset. "When I saw the name Duke's on the front (of the catalogue) I couldn't believe it," Mr Schwinge said. Duke's said. sarcophagus dates from the 2nd Century. The rectangular sarcophagus is carved from fine quality white marble, said a spokesman for Duke's, who sold the coffin for a second time. The quality of the carving suggests it was made for a high status individual.
