Achievements in Science and Technology contributing to national socio-economic development Many results of science research and technology application

have a considerate contribution to the socio-economic growth in Vietnam for years introduced at the exhibition of introducing achievements in socio-economic growth of Vietnam and Thanglong Hanoi in order to welcome 1000-year Thanhlong birthday festival/Thanglong millennium birthday festival. Science and Technology has many contributions to the national socio-economic growth with the following lists of some great achievements: High-tech mechanical devices Manufacture and application of new technologies in Son La hydroelectric power plant Son La Dam is the largest hydroelectric power plant in Southeast Asia , with 6 turbines, a total capacity of 2400 MW and an annual average generation of 9,4 kWh. This has been the construction taking the greatest amount of efforts undertaken by Vietnam. Many new and advanced technologies and technical solutions are successfully self-employed and applied by Vietnamese consulting, designing, device-manufacturing and implementing agencies. Vietnamese science and technology have contributed an important role in bringing the plant come to operation 2 years earlier than expected, taking advantage of domestic materials, reducing products price and making an over -VND 24.000-billion profit. Manufacture of made-in-Vietnam mechatronic products Industrial Machinery and Instruments Holding (IMI) has established a foundation for developing mechatronics, a new mechanical branch, which has highly competitive ability and economic efficiency. IMI has creatively combined mechanics with automation, electronics and IT in order to make new mechanical products with high flexibility, which improves products competitive ability, dominates domestic market, creates high value added for products and brings economic efficiency. In 2005, 51 new mechanical products belong to the work research, design and manufacture mechtronic products in industry got awarded Ho Chi Minh Prize. The high-tech products of The Institute dominate most of domestic market. The price is 30-40% lower than foreign counters, which helps save millions of USD each year due to replacing imported products. In the last 10 years, the scientific officers of the Institute have successfully researched, designed and manufactured mechtronic products, with over 100 high-tech products, widely applied in industrial production in the whole country. This makes/brings/creates a VND 1000-billion profit annually. Computer numerical control (CNC) manufactured by Vietnam As early as/since the 1990s of previous century, many projects, researching theses of CNC manufacture have been funded by The Government. The researching and manufacturing establishments in Hanoi, IMI

and Hameco, for example, had some initial successes such as manufacturing 3 axis CNC milling, CNC bevel lathe. These above results were just at trial level instead of being commercial because the domestic conditions faced a lot of difficulties at that time. In 2000, a new set of theses and projects had initial result in commercializing CNCs products in domestic market. In the role of partner directly carries out or presides over these above theses and projects, Bach Khoa Mechatronic limited Corp has contributed to bring the products into market and strengthen products mode researching, built domestic and foreign aided suppliers network. The company is successful in applying some new researches in designing machine tool such as optimized structure technique helps reduce products mass/weight up to 30% while retaining its original features of hardness, natural frequency and FEA testing techniques, hardness testing, kinetics testing, thermal variation testing, for example. Thanks to domesticalized devices, CNCs products cost 30% less than imported foreign counters. Products of Institute of Geophysics Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology Automaticalized system of managing, monitoring and controlling ships Satellite technology Pico-Dragon satellite Pico-Dragon satellite is the result of the thesis Emulate, design and manufacture Pico Satellite at Vietnam Academy of Science and Technologys level and is the first Pico satellite self- researched, selfdesigned and self-manufactured by Vietnam.(Department of Aerospace Dynamics and Precision Mechatronics Space Technology Institute Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology) The satellite can be applied in some fields such as communicating and receiving controlling instructions form spacecraft, sending collected data from satellite back to the Earth, photographing the Earth with low resolution, sending photos data back to the spacecraft. The main purpose of Pico-Dragon is to serve the mission of training young official staff following procedures: creating learning conditions, studying stages from designing, manufacturing to testing, launching to orbits and finally controlling the satellite.

The research and manufacture of Pico-Dragon aim to building engineer staff who themselves operate/employ the process and technology in manufacturing the satellite, serving Vietnam futures orientation of satellite technology development.
