1. The Properties: First we learned the associative property of addition, the commutative property of addition and the identity property of addition. The associative property of addition is when you change the grouping of a number. E.g. (2+4) + (6+8) =. You would change it so its mental math by putting the brackets around 4 and 6, and then 8 and 2. So the problem should look this- (2+8) + (6+4) =20. The commutative property of addition is when you basically just swap the numbers around to make it easier. E.g. 4 +7 + 6 =. You would change it to 4 + 6 + 7 =17 because 4 and 6 are easy to add up. The identity property of addition is when a 0 is added on to an equation. E.g. 7 + 0 + 3 =. You would ignore the 0 because the 0 does nothing to your answer. The problem would look like this using the identity property of addition- 7 + 3 =10 We then learned the associative property of multiplication, the commutative property of multiplication and the identity property of multiplication. The associative property of multiplication is when the brackets of an equation are changed around to make the math problem easier. E.g. (4*2)*(25*5) = you would have to rearrange

the brackets so they go around 4 and 25, and 5 and 2. The proper equation would look like this- (4*25)*(2*5) =1000. The commutative property of multiplication is when you rearrange the numbers to make it mental math. E.g. 4*3*25 =. You would have to rearrange the numbers so you can multiply it in your head. The proper equation would look like this- 4*25*3 =300 The identity property of multiplication is when a number is multiplied by 1 in an equation. E.g. 8*1*9 =. You would just leave the 1 out of the equation because anything multiplied by 1 is your original number. So the equation would look like this- 8*9 =72 2. Multi Step Problem a. The income from 1992-2002 was $-1236. This is a huge Loss. I got this answer by adding $-1340, $-2459, $-872, $1137, $774 and $1524. b. The average income for 1997-2002 was $-206. I got this answer by taking the total income for 1997-2002 and divided it by 6. c. Time period Change (Dollars) 19971998 $-1119 19981999 $1587 19992000 $265 20002001 $-363 20012002 $750

The negative numbers on this table mean that the company lost money that year instead of gaining it. The positive numbers are the years that the company gained a profit. d. The average amount of money earned a year was $224. I got this by adding the numbers from the previous data table (above) divided by 5 and got my answer.

e. I think this company will be successful in the future because they have scrambled their way out of $1236 of debt and started to make a profit. The numbers on the data table have been rising, so by 2012 they will most likely be earning a lot of money. Once a company starts earning money and making a profit then its hard to stop because they are on a roll.
