Voters uphold law
in euphoric night
for supporters
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
BALTIMORE Maryland voters on
Tuesday approved the states same-sex
marriage law in a night of historic rsts for
LGBT Americans.
With 97 percent of precincts reporting,
Question 6 passed by a 52-48 percent margin.
Fairness and equality under the law
won tonight, said Josh Levin, campaign
manager for Marylanders for Marriage
Equality, in a statement shortly after his
group announced voters had upheld the
law. Were sure to feel the ripples of this
monumental victory across the country for
years to come.
Gov. Martin OMalley, who signed the
states same-sex marriage law in March,
joined lesbian state Dels. Heather Mizeur
(D-Montgomery County) and Mary
Washington (D-Baltimore City) and other
elected ofcials on stage at the Baltimore
Soundstage.
Thank you for what you have done
in this noble battle to move Maryland
forward, said OMalley.
Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-
Blake echoed the governor.
There are very few times when there
are no words to describe how grateful
I am, she said hours after she joined
OMalley and Brendon Ayanbadejo of the
Baltimore Ravens at a local polling place.
I am so grateful for Maryland standing up
for fairness, for standing up for equality.
Gay state Sen. Rich Madaleno
(D-Montgomery County) told Question
6 supporters they are standing here
as equal citizens of the United States.
He also had a proposal of sorts for his
husband.
I have one last thing to say, said
Madaleno. Hopefully somewhere in
Kensington, Mark Hodge is watching this
broadcast. And honey I say will you marry
me again?
Question 6 opponents maintained the
same-sex marriage law did not protect
religious freedom in spite of what OMalley
and other supporters repeatedly claimed.
Some even resorted to using increasingly
homophobic language that included
equating gay men to predators who
want to indoctrinate children and noting
Superstorm Sandy struck New York City after
Mayor Michael Bloomberg donated $250,000
to Marylanders for Marriage Equality during
the nal days of the campaign.
The Maryland Marriage Alliance, which
opposed the same-sex marriage law, did not
immediately respond to Question 6s passage.
This is a historic night, state Del.
Keiffer Mitchell (D-Baltimore City) told the
Washington Blade as the results began
to come in. When I was talking to voters
out there, they were comfortable with the
religious protections involved and they
started to see it more as an equality issue.
Baltimore resident Monica Jones
pointed to two people with whom she
works in the citys school system who
cannot currently add their same-sex
partners to their health insurance plans.
She told the Blade that Question 6 would
allow them to do that.
I feel like why not give it to them, said
Jones, who sang a song in support of the
same-sex marriage law while awaiting the
results. Theyre family. Theyre no different
than what we are no different at all.
Congressman Elijah Cummings early on
Tuesday said he was optimistic Maryland
voters would support the law, but predicted
the margin of victory would be slim.
I think its going to pass, he told
the Washington Blade in an interview
outside Northwood Elementary School in
Baltimore.
Cummings, who represents parts of Charm
City and Baltimore and Howard Counties,
told the Blade last month he was going to
vote for Question 6. He was the last member
of the Maryland Democratic congressional
delegation to publicly back the law.
We have come a long way on that issue,
he said. Im the son of two Pentecostal
ministers. In my home, women putting on
make-up was considered a sin. Thats the
kind of house I grew up in. And so you can
imagine some issues are very, very difcult.
Gay Delaware candidates lose bids for ofce
Gay Democrats Andy Staton and Marie Mayor lost their bids to become the
rst openly gay candidates elected to the Delaware Legislature on Tuesday in
districts where large numbers of LGBT people live.
Staton, a real estate agent in the popular gay beach resort town of Rehoboth
Beach, ran for a seat in the Delaware Senate in a newly created district that included
Rehoboth Beach and the nearby towns of Lewes, Dewey Beach and Milton.
Supporters believed Staton had a good chance of winning in the majority
Democratic district, which was viewed as being more progressive-leaning than
surrounding parts of Republican dominated Sussex County.
Final but unofcial returns from the Delaware Board of Elections show Staton
received 42.7 percent of the vote compared to Republican challenger Ernesto
Lopez, who received 56.1 percent. Libertarian candidate Gwendolyn Jones
received 1.2 percent.
In a nearby district, lesbian businesswoman Marie Mayor was believed to have
a shot at winning a seat in the Delaware House of Representatives in a district in
Milton. Mayor received 46.8 percent of the vote, losing to Republican Stephen
Smyk, who received 53.2 percent.
When asked why Staton and Mayor fell short of predictions by some that they
were poised to win their races, gay Democratic activist Peter Schott, an ofcial
with Stonewall Democrats of Delaware, said: Its very simple. The whole county
has become increasingly more Republican.
Staton, who couldnt immediately be reached for comment, told the Blade last
week that he was optimistic about his prospects for winning.
People are responding overwhelmingly, he said, referring to his campaigns
TV ads.
Delaware Gov. Jack Markell, state Attorney General Beau Biden, U.S. Sens.
Chris Coons and Tom Carper were among the big name elected ofcials that
endorsed Staton.

Grosso beats Brown in
at-large Council race
By LOU CHIBBARO JR.
lchibbaro@washblade.com
Veteran gay and Ward 8 community
activist Phil Pannell lost his bid for a Ward 8
seat on the D.C. State Board of Education
for the second year in a row on Tuesday,
nishing far behind incumbent school
board member Trayon Tray White.
Final but unofcial returns from the D.C.
Board of Elections show White captured
72.5 percent of the vote, with Pannell
receiving 27.1 percent.
Pannell lost to White in a special election
last year by fewer than 200 votes. Ward 8
gay Democratic activist Bradley Lewis, a
Pannell supporter, said Pannell faced a
greater challenge this year because White
had the benet of incumbency.
Lewis said White also beneted from
the support of Ward 8 Council member
and former D.C. Mayor Marion Barry,
who is highly popular in the ward. Barry
breezed to re-election on Tuesday,
trouncing challenger Jauhar Abraham by
an 87 percent to 12 percent margin.
In a separate school board race, gay
Dupont Circle ANC Commissioner Jack
Jacobson won election to the boards
Ward 2 seat. Jacobson ran unopposed.
In a development expected by most
political observers, acting Council
member Phil Mendelson (D-At-Large)
won his race to become Council Chair
in a special election. Mendelson, who
had been serving as acting chair, beat
Democratic challenger Calvin Gurley by a
75.5 percent to 27.3 percent margin.
Mendelson is a longtime supporter
of LGBT rights and played a key role
in helping to pass the citys same-sex
marriage law as chair of the committee
with jurisdiction over the law.
In the hotly contested race for the at-
large D.C. Council seat reserved for a non-
Democratic candidate, challenger David
Grosso beat incumbent Michael A. Brown.
Both are independents. With 100 percent
of the citys 142 precincts counted, Grosso
received 20.8 percent of the vote; Brown
received 15 percent of the vote.
Both candidates are strong supporters
of LGBT rights and campaigned
aggressively for the LGBT vote. Most
political observers say Brown lost due to
voter concern about a series of personal
and campaign nancial problems that
surfaced over the past several years
The two were competing in a seven-
candidate race for two at-large seats up
for grabs this year. Under the citys election
law, the candidates nishing in rst and
second place win the seats. Incumbent
Council member Vincent Orange, a
Democrat, won re-election to the other
seat, capturing 37.4 percent of the vote.
Republican Mary Brooks Beatty received
7 percent of the vote, independent
candidates A.J. Cooper and Leon Swain
each received 6.6 percent, and Statehood
Green Party candidate Ann Wilcox
received 5.8 percent.
Council members Jack Evans (D-Ward
2) and Muriel Bowser (D-Ward 4), who are
also strong supporters of LGBT rights,
won re-election unopposed.
Council member Yvette Alexander (D-Ward)
beat Republican challenger Ron Moten by a
margin of 86.7 percent to 12.3 percent.
In other D.C. races, Democratic Del.
Eleanor Holmes Norton won re-election
with 88.7 percent of the vote, defeating gay
Libertarian Party candidate Bruce Majors,
who received 5.8 percent of the vote, and
Statehood Green Party candidate Natale
Stracuzzi, who received 4.7 percent.
Norton, a longtime strong supporter on
LGBT issues, received the endorsement of
the Stein Club. Major, who has also been a
longtime gay activist, was endorsed by the
gay conservative group GOProud.
D.C. shadow Senator Michael D. Brown
and shadow House candidate Nate
Bennett-Fleming, who also received the
Stein Clubs endorsement, won their races
by lopsided margins.
LGBT supportive at-large school board
candidate Mary Lord and Ward 7 school
board candidate Karen Williams, who also
expressed support on LGBT rights, won their
respective races by comfortable margins.

Pannell loses bid for D.C. school board seat
Cassey might be
nations youngest
out gay ofcial
By SANTIAGO MELLI-HUBER
A Georgetown University sophomore
was on track this week to become what
he claims will be the youngest openly gay
elected ofcial in the country, running for
a special ANC Commission post for Ward
2E, a campus-specic seat.
Craig Cassey, 20, ran as a write-in
candidate. The Board of Elections didnt
have numbers available as of Blade press
time this week, but Cassey says he was
running unopposed. He knows of no
one else conducting a write-in campaign
for the seat. If he wins, hell be sworn in
in January and serve with seven other
members of his commission.
The Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund
conrmed that a Cassey victory would be
unprecedented for an LGBT elected ofcial.
Weve checked and can nd no out
elected ofcial as young as him anywhere in
the country, Denis Dison, a spokesperson
for the Victory Fund, wrote in an e-mail.
A representative from the D.C. Board of
Elections said this week that their ofce
should have estimates of the number of
write-ins in the race this week, but that
ofcial numbers and the names of the
candidates could take weeks to conrm.
Cassey hopes to inspire young people
if he wins.
In the same way, I think being the
youngest openly gay elected ofcial will
motivate others and will allow younger
gay and lesbian teens to see that you
can be elected as a gay person. Politics is
something you dont have to shy away
from for fear of persecution, he said.
Cassey said he went the write-in route
because the lack of students on campus
during summer, when petition signatures to
get on the ballot must be gathered, made
it difcult to secure enough to get on the
ballot. He tried but came up two short of
the 25 needed. Students switching dorms
made it hard to nd enough during summer
who knew where theyd be for fall, he said.
The matter was further complicated by a
redistricting process that occurred last year
affecting the makeup of the district for which
hes running.
Cassey, a psychology and philosophy
major, hopes to earn a masters degree in
applied positive psychology and use it to
help gay teens realize their potential and
role in the world.
In reference to his sexual orientation
and age, Cassey has not experienced any
criticism in his bid for ofce. Looking back on
the anti-gay assaults against Georgetown
students in recent years, Cassey expressed
relief at the changing culture.
In todays campus climate, we can have
an openly gay candidate run, and its really
not a big issue.
Cassey recently won the Victory Funds
Onward to Victory contest, which earned
him an all-expenses-paid trip to the Funds
Candidate & Campaign Training in Long
Beach, Calif., at the end of November.
Craig is what this country needs, said
Jack Jacobson, openly gay ANC Ward 2B
commissioner. Hes young and gay, which
are two underrepresented demographics.
Hes standing up and giving them a seat at
the table. It will make a positive impact for
the entire community.
Jacobson ran unopposed for the Ward 2
seat of the D.C. State Board of Education.
Early on in Casseys time at Georgetown,
he noticed tension between the student
body and the surrounding community.
He decided to run for a seat on the ANC
because he saw the potential to build a
stronger sense of community between the
two populations.
He hopes to promote more student
involvement in the Georgetown
community and encourage students to
volunteer in the area. He would also like
to see Georgetown University hold more
events to engage young, local families.
G-town student, 20, earns distinction in local race
Georgetown University sophomore CRAIG
CASSEY says tension between students and the
community near campus inspired him to run.

AURORA, Ill. Assistant Superintendent Dr. Christie Aird will retain her position
in the East Aurora, Illinois school district, despite controversy over implementing
and then rescinding policies protecting transgender students.
On Oct. 14, the school board unanimously approved gender protections
proposed by Aird that would have allowed students to use bathrooms matching
their gender identity, and compelled teachers to refer to gender-variant students
by the name of their choosing, according to the Chicago Phoenix.
However, controversy following the vote led to the school board rescinding
the policies just ve days later, and called a community meeting regarding Airds
continued employment in the district on Nov. 5, where teachers, parents and
students overwhelmingly expressed their support for Aird and her policies.
Have you ever taken a step forward, when everyone asked you to take a step
back? one mother asked board members, according to the Windy City Times.
AIDS mortality rate still high among blacks
LOS ANGELES A new study shows that, despite drops in the overall mortality
rates among those infected by HIV, the disease still ranks as the ninth biggest
killer among African Americans.
The study published in The Archives of Internal Medicine this month shows a 93
percent drop from 1993 to 2007 in the HIV mortality rate for white American men, and an
88 percent drop for white women. However, less educated African-American men are 26
times more likely to die of an HIV-related illness if infected than their white counterparts.
The time has come for a major commitment of resources to address these
shameful disparities in HIV outcomes in the United States, writes Dr William
Cunningham of the UCLA Medical School in his editorial accompanying the
study, according to the organization AidsMap. There continue to be important
disparities among minority populations in the United States that deserve greater
attention than they have received thus far.
San Fran to provide transition care to patients
SAN FRANCISCO The body governing the San Francisco Department of Public
Health voted unanimously Tuesday to remove restrictions to transition-related care to
transgender patients enrolled in a health care program for uninsured residents.
According to the Transgender Law Center, the San Francisco Health Commission
brought Healthy SF in line with health care plans already in place for employees of
the cities of San Francisco and Berkeley by approving the new rules recommended
by the Board of Supervisors. Professional organizations, including the American
Medical Association, have deemed the procedures medically necessary.
Like so many of my transgender peers, my need for transition-related care was
so important that I focused on it above meeting my other needs, said health care
provider, and former Healthy SF enrollee, Cyd Nova. Today, as a trans health care
provider, I often see participants at the clinic who face the predicament of choosing
between saving money for transition related care or meeting basic needs.
Teens with lesbian moms do better in school
LAS VEGAS Teens with lesbian moms have higher grades and report being
generally happier in life, according to a new Williams Institute study tracking 78
kids over a period of 26 years.
These kids were planned and their lesbian mothers were very engaged in
parenting, Nanette Gartrell, principal investigator of the study for the Williams Institute
at UCLA, told CBS Las Vegas. At the end of high school, the teens tell us that they have
excellent grades, feel connected to their families and friends and admire their parents.

Sandy decimates LGBT
homeless center
NYC facility served youth,
appeals for help
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
Superstorm Sandys record storm surge
on Oct. 29 inundated a New York City
drop-in center for homeless youth.
Carl Siciliano, executive director of the Ali
Forney Center, told the Washington Blade
that the storm left up to four feet of water
from the nearby Hudson River in the facility
on West 22nd Street in Manhattans West
Chelsea neighborhood. The water has since
receded, but Siciliano said the storm surge
decimated the drop-in center.
Everything is destroyed all of the
electricity in the place, the oors, the
computers, the laptops, the phones, les,
all the furniture, he said. Everything
is just destroyed. The refrigerator was
oating and knocked over, all the food
was out. The space is uninhabitable.
The organization named in honor
of Ali Forney, a homeless LGBT youth
advocate who was murdered in the
Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan in
1997, operates seven housing facilities in
Brooklyn and another in Queens. None of
them suffered any damage from the storm.
Were very grateful for that, said
Siciliano.
Sandy also left the Ali Forney Centers
administrative ofce in Midtown Manhattan
undamaged. A second drop-in center
currently under construction in Harlem is not
scheduled to open until early next year.
Its going to be some months before
were able to be in there so were going to
have to really scramble to gure out a way
to work with these kids, said Siciliano.
The kids that come into that space are
like our most vulnerable kids. Theyre
the ones who are out on the streets
with nowhere to go. And that programs
really a lifeline for them. They get food
and clothing and showers and bathroom
facilities, medical care [and] HIV testing.
Its kind of our triage place in the city for
kids who are chucked out on the streets.
Sandy forced the Empire State Pride
Agenda, the National Gay and Lesbian
Task Force, the International Gay and
Lesbian Human Rights Commission and
other LGBT advocacy groups to close
their New York ofces because of a lack
of electricity and in some cases ooding
from the storm surge that reached 13.88
feet at the Battery in lower Manhattan.
Neither the LGBT Community Center in
Greenwich Village or the Gay Mens Health
Crisis new ofces on West 33rd Street
on the West Side of Manhattan suffered
any damage from Sandy. Gay City News
reported the storm surge ooded Bailey-
Holt House, a building on the corner of
Christopher Street and the West Side
Highway in the far West Village in which
44 people with HIV/AIDS live.
We seem to have taken the brunt of
it, said Siciliano, referring to the impact
the storm had on other LGBT advocacy
groups in the ve boroughs. Were just
half a block away from the river.
Siciliano said he has spoken with
ofcials at the White House, the Federal
Emergency Management Agency and
both New York City Council Christine
Quinns and Gov. Andrew Cuomos ofces.
The Ali Forney Center is also accepting
donations on its website to continue its
outreach and advocacy efforts.
There are so many problems that I
have to deal with all the time with these
kids, but I never did really think in my
mind about catastrophic ooding, said
Siciliano. Thats denitely a new level of
things to be concerned about.
Superstorm Sandys storm surge inundated the Ali Forney Centers drop-in center
for homeless LGBT youth.

By BRIAN T. CARNEY
Arlingtons Signature Theatre is about to
tackle one of the biggest shows in Broadway
and Hollywood history: Dreamgirls.
Director and choreographer Matt
Gardiner had one word to describe his
initial reaction: daunting. For actress
Nova Payton, who will be starring as Efe
White, the word was demanding. For
costume designer Frank Labovitz, the
word was huge.
Dreamgirls is a show that is often tagged
with the word legendary. It was the last
major show of legendary Broadway director
and choreographer Michael Bennett. It was
legendary for the backstage ghts during
workshops, rehearsals and previews, for the
20-minute show-stopping ovation during Act
I on opening night, and for the long run on
Broadway, along with numerous national and
international tours. It was also legendary for
the staging that featured set designer Robin
Wagners rotating towers and for Theonis V.
Aldredges dazzling costumes (both of which
were featured on the shows iconic posters).
And it was legendary for the new
sounds that composer Henry Krieger
brought to Broadway and for the smooth
cinematic way that lyricist and bookwriter
Tom Eyen wove the music and dialogue
together. It became legendary for a movie
adaptation that won an Academy Award
for American Idol runner-up Jennifer
Hudson in her movie debut.
Dreamgirls tells the story of the
Dreamettes, a girl group from Chicago
that rises to international fame. The plot is
loosely based on the saga of Diana Ross
and the Supremes and other Motown-era
gures. After losing a talent competition at
the famous Apollo Theatre in New York, the
Dreamettes are hired as back-up singers
for James Thunder Early. Spurred on by
their ambitious manager Curtis Taylor, Jr.,
the girls break away from Jimmy and begin
performing as the Dreams. Efe White (a
character somewhat based on Supremes
founder Florence Ballard) sings lead and
her friends Deena Jones (the Diana Ross
gure) and Lorrell Robinson sing back-up.
Although he is having an affair with
Efe, Curtis moves Deena to the front of
the group. She has a smoother sound and
a slicker look that he thinks will be more
appealing to white audiences, enabling
the group to cross over and sell more
records. Although the group does become
increasingly popular, Efe is not happy
singing back-up and begins to suspect
that Curtis is having an affair with Deena.
Her suspicions are conrmed when Curtis
dumps her personally and professionally.
Thats the cue for the shows most
famous number, And I Am Telling You Im
Not Going, which original Efe Jennifer
Holliday performed twice last year in D.C.
at Pride and with the Gay Mens Chorus.
As Act II opens and the story moves from
the 1960s to the 1970s, Curtis marries Deena,
who becomes an international superstar,
although she yearns to be seen as a serious
actress. Jimmy falls on hard times when he
rejects Curtis advice on how to appeal to
broader audiences. Efe has a child and
struggles to rebuild her career. The Dreams
help usher in the disco era, and the rest is
music and musical theater history.
Faced with this challenging material
and famous predecessors, Gardiner and
his collaborators have developed a fresh
and exciting approach to the show.
I spent a lot of time with our design
team trying to come up with a way to do
it that honored Michael Bennetts original
intention but made it our own, he says.
At Signature, we would never be able
recreate Bennetts staging, so we are
trying to nd our own way into it that is
more Signature.
For example, the openly gay Gardiner
notes, Bennett and the writers really
played with the idea of perspective, the
change between backstage and onstage. In
that original production he had the use of
these beautiful towers that became iconic
in the way the show is remembered. From
the onset, we knew that we werent going
to do it that way. We asked how do we play
with the idea of perspective, both onstage
and offstage, and the whole idea of the
glamorous sparkle and whats underneath
it. To answer that, theyve created a more
intimate approach to the musical that uses a
smaller ensemble and focuses more clearly
on the Dreams and their leading men.
One of the things that will give Signature
Theatres production of Dreamgirls a
distinctive feel is Nova Y. Paytons highly
anticipated performance as Efe White.
Gardiner freely admits, It is no secret that
Signature chose the piece for her and I
dont think anyones going to be let down.
Maryland native Gardiner is full of
praise for his star. Shes a wonderful
person rst and foremost and then on top
of that she has the most killer voice. Shes
a spectacular actress and a spectacular
singer and were waiting for her to blow
the roof off Signature.
D.C. native Payton returns the praise to
Gardiner. I love Matt! she says. This will be
second show Ive done with him. (Their rst
collaboration was last seasons Zanadu.)
Matt is brilliant. His vision of the show is
very clear. In rehearsal, hes very precise
about what hes looking for but at the same
time allowing us as actors to bring what we
may see. We are a team trying to put this
production together and he trusts us.
Payton also has great praise for the
work of costume designer Frank Labovitz,
although she wont reveal much about the
fabulous costumes she will be wearing.
I dont want to give away too much,
she says, because when you think about
Dreamgirls you think about the beautiful
costumes.
But she does praise Labovitz for his
innovative design. What excited me
about Franks renderings was how different
they were from what Ive seen before. Its
fresh and a very new feel, but it stays true
to the period. And of course there are lots
of sequins and bright colors and beautiful
shoes and wonderful hair and makeup.
You can denitely look forward to that.
Labovitz estimates that there are about
200 costumes in the show. The Dreams
alone have 11 sets of three matching
dresses, plus their individual costumes
with day looks and eveningwear Its
a constant parade of costumes, the
designer says. If an actor isnt onstage,
hes offstage changing clothes. Labovitz
says the costumes are almost like
another character in the play. They help
to tell the story, detailing the changing
circumstances of the characters and
capturing the feel of the rapidly changing
world around them. Its rare that you get
to work on a show where the costumes are
so central to telling the story.
The costume designer is also a big fan
of Hollywoods version of Dreamgirls.
One of the things that was great about
the movie was how faithful they were to
the original, he says. The movie version
really maintains the character of the show.
But he adds, theres nothing like seeing
the show in a theater. There is something
magical about watching it live. Some of the
moments in the show are unbelievable, like
when someone does a costume change
onstage in front of you and you dont see
it happen because of tricks with lights and
costumes. Those moments onstage seem
to defy reality. Like when the Dreams exit
in one costume and appear onstage six
seconds later in a different outt.
The opening of Dreamgirls at
Signature Theatre will also have a special
resonance for D.C.s LGBT community.
While the show is a favorite for gay and
lesbian audiences, the shows signature
song, And I Am Telling You Im Not
Going has long been a special favorite
for drag queens in the nations capital and
around the world. Many of D.C.s leading
ladies of drag will no doubt be rotating
the song back into their act. And thats ne
with Nova Payton, who says, I love seeing
the ladies do what they do.

Kenya Hutton noticed in his LGBT advocacy work that there was often a gap between
services for teens and young adults. That and losing a good friend to AIDS in his native
Brooklyn in the 90s, inspired him to devote his life to HIV and young adult work.
A lot of it is HIV prevention work and getting young adults to think about the
things we do to put ourselves at risk, he says. And encouraging them to be
productive citizens who dont just have to accept whatever is thrown at them.
Since moving to Washington in 2006 after two years of doing this kind of work
full time in New York, Hutton, 34, has worked variously with HIPS, Us Helping
Us and more recently, the Carl Vogel Center and a new organization, Voices of
One in Maryland. Hes also on the board of D.C. Black Pride. Consulting and
programming are his full-time work. Hutton says hes been blessed to be able
to nd a way to do this kind of work as a career. In September, he was honored
at an Alston House benet for his youth advocacy work.
Growing up in New York in the 90s was tough, very tough, he says.
Although in New York, there were places you could go and get services, nobody
really talked about being gay, HIV or sex in general. It just didnt happen.
Hutton and his boyfriend, Charles, have been dating since earlier this year.
Hutton lives in District Heights, Md., and enjoys volunteering, cooking and
traveling in his free time.

Compelling character
study crackles at
Signature
By PATRICK FOLLIARD
In gay playwright Christopher Shinns
quietly compelling Dying City (now
making its D.C. premier in a smart,
effective production at Signature Theatre),
a trio of young characters negotiate
emotional battleelds in the shadow of
the Iraq War.
Set in New York, far from Baghdad, the
play begins with Kelly (an aptly reserved
Rachel Zampelli) watching TV alone in her
comfortable New York City apartment
(compliments of set designer Daniel
Conway) when suddenly she receives an
unexpected and not wholly welcomed
evening visitor. Its Peter (Thomas
Keegan), the identical twin brother of her
late husband Craig, a Harvard graduate
student who was killed the previous year
during military service in Iraq. Kelly and
Peter havent spoken since the funeral.
A successful Hollywood actor in town
doing theater (ONeills classic portrait of
family dysfunction, Long Days Journey
Into Night), Peter is all ingratiating charm
as he coaxes Kelly, a therapist, to talk
about their shared loss. Guarded and at
times visibly anguished, Kelly reluctantly
enters into conversation. Together, they
revisit the night before Craigs departure
for training camp in Georgia, the murky
circumstances surrounding his death and
their disparate backgrounds (Kellys rich
parents were emotionally absent, the
twins father was a violent Vietnam vet and
their mother held ambitions for her sons
to escape the connes of their modest
Midwestern upbringing).
An intimate play, Dying City is ideal
for the Ark, Signatures smaller black box.
The fast-paced dramas action alternates
between Peter and Kellys strained visit
and ashback scenes involving Kelly and
Craig (also played by brawny Keegan). This
casting trick requires a lot of quick exits
and entrances. Fortunately, gay director
Matthew Gardiners shrewd staging along
with Colin K. Bills lighting and Matt Rowes
transporting sound design make time
travel smooth and not the least bit hokey.
By changing shirts and adding a little
swagger, Keegan morphs from the more
effusive, self-absorbed Peter to his butcher,
more reticent straight brother Craig.
Slowly, Kelly becomes more
comfortable. The in-laws are getting along.
Conversation strays to backstage gossip
and the latest on Peters tumultuous love
life. But when Peter unexpectedly pulls
out a cache of beautifully crafted emails
sent to him from Craig while in Iraq, the
intentions of Peters visit become suspect.
While both Kelly and Peter have always
dismissed the Iraq War as destructive
and senseless adventure, the once pro-
war Craig demonstrates in his eloquent
missives that during the last days of his
life, he joined the anti-war ranks with
his brother and wife. Other revelatory
passages (but less well-received by Kelly)
come to light as well. Layers of truths and
untruths, and who knew what when, are
explored.
Since her husbands death, Kelly spends
a lot of time holed up at home watching
TIVOed episodes of Law and Order.
After seeing scores of episodes, she has
gured out the secret to the cop shows
success: Kelly believes that people nd
comfort in the idea being remembered
after their death. We like the notion that if
were murdered, a team of detectives and
forensic experts will convene to remember
us and give closure. Nothing about Craigs
death has been neatly closed. And while
Kellys future is uncertain, she seems to be
getting stronger.

Apps and sex sites offer
quick thrills, but could
keep you from the LTR
you seek
DEAR MICHAEL: I seem to be spending
more and more time on my phone lately,
looking for hookups, but Im having
some doubts that this is all good. Pro: Im
meeting lots of hot guys and having a lot of
hot sex. Con: I still am not in a relationship
and want to have a boyfriend. Pro: All my
friends are on the same apps and we have
a lot of fun comparing notes. Con: We
dont seem to talk about much else. Pro:
It gives me a rush and feels fun. Con: I
think its eating up all my time. Pro: Its fun
to be able to meet guys quickly, wherever
I am. Con: I almost had an accident while
looking for guys on my phone while
driving through North Carolina.
What do you think?
POSSIBLY SCREWED BY MY APP
DEAR SCREWED: Hooking up with people
and the hunt for hookups, can feel great.
Our brains produce chemicals that give us
intense feelings of pleasure not just when
we have sex, but also as we move toward
getting naked: during foreplay, while were
irting, and if were using an app to
look for potential partners when we
take the very rst step of launching the
app. So, as you start scanning all those
alluring possibilities on your phone, you are
triggering a neurochemical response in your
brain that can create an awesome high.
The problem is, because simply getting
on the app makes you feel good, you are
likely to get on it more and more often.
And because actually nding hookups
makes you feel good, you can easily get
obsessed with chasing this particular high.
If it sounds like Im using the language
of addiction: Youre right, I am.
Now, lets look at your situation from a
slightly different perspective. The road to
hooking up can be a speedy route to feeling
attractive and desired. The validation we
get, from both hookups and potential
hookups, can seem like a powerful self-
esteem boost. Typically, this leads us to
pursue more and more hookups. Gay men,
who usually have a core experience of
feeling different and defective, are highly
susceptible to this sort of x.
Some problems with this: The boost is
eeting, because external praise for our
surface attributes doesnt really change how
we feel about ourselves and we are likely to
spend more and more time chasing short-
lived validation from people we hardly
know. If you dont actually feel good about
endlessly pursuing hookups, then hanging
out with your app will ultimately lower your
self-esteem. This is the opposite of what
youre looking for and what you feel like
youre getting when you launch the app.
The upshot is, you may be addicted to
an experience that is keeping you hunting
for hookups, even though you say you want
a relationship. And because the particular
high of intense excitement that you are
chasing is a very different experience
from the intimacy and commitment of a
relationship, you are conditioning your
brain to crave hookups, and their pursuit,
rather than something more long-term.
If you want to make a change, you would
benet tremendously from strong support,
because it isnt easy to stop a behavior
with such seductive and pleasurable
payoffs, even if there are also negative
consequences. You report that all your
friends are similarly engaged, which makes
it difcult to do something different.
Consider looking for an additional social
network (live rather than virtual) and
perhaps a therapist knowledgeable about
this issue to help you broaden your sources
of pleasure, stimulation and connection.

OUTdoor group nds
gay community in
nature activities
By KEVIN MAJOROS
Over the years, I have met many couples
at LGBT sporting events and functions.
Usually, one is the athlete and the other is
a supporter of his or her partners athletic
endeavors.
The OUTdoor Adventures Group was
founded by Baltimore couple, Steve Marker
and Joe Palumbo in the summer of 2010.
They share a passion for the outdoors.
We were at a bar one night with a
group of friends and wanted to nd an
opportunity to get together with other
gay men that did not involve drinking,
Palumbo says. Both Steve and I love
hiking, camping and being outdoors so
the group began with day trips.
The day trips have included skydiving,
rock climbing, white water rafting, Gay
Day at Hershey Park and competing in the
Warrior Dash and Tough Mudder. They
have also made two weekend trips part of
their annual activities.
Big Gay Camping is a weekend event
held in the fall every year with the group
camping in Harpers Ferry the rst year
and switching to the gay-friendly locale
of The Woods in Lehigh, Pa., for the last
two years.
When we rst started out, most of the
people in the group were from Baltimore,
Palumbo says. On the last camping trip,
we had close to 40 people from Baltimore,
D.C., Philadelphia and New York.
Coming up for the group is the third
annual Gay Ski Weekend where the group
has reserved a lakefront chalet in Deep
Creek, Md. They have already booked
close to 30 people for the weekend which
will kick off on Jan. 25.
Marker and Palumbo, who met at Gay
Pride in Baltimore in 2008, were married in
July at Old Stone House in Georgetown.
Their honeymoon was an Alaskan cruise
which included 55 of their family and
friends. Festivities on the ship included a
pool party and rock climbing.
Recently, the couple took their
adventuring to the extreme level by
completing the Via Ferrata course at
Nelson Rocks in West Virginia. Via Ferrata
systems are relatively new in the United
States but have been popular for decades
in Europe, where about 300 routes are
open to the public.
Via Ferrata means road with irons in
Italian. The courses have been described
by many as a combination of hiking
and climbing. Via Ferratas are strongly
associated with World War I when the
Italians and Austrians were ghting near
the Dolomites mountain ranges in Italy.
The troops needed a better way to move
through the mountainous area.
The modern Via Ferrata is a steel
cable that runs along the route and is
periodically xed to the rock. Climbing
aids such as iron rungs, pegs, carved
steps, ladders and bridges are often found
on the courses.
The Nelson Rocks facility is one of
about eight in the United States. Marker
and Palumbo nished the 3.5-mile course
in just over ve hours.
Adventuring has always been a part of
our life together, Marker says. Whenever
we are feeling stress, we nd something to
do that will take us outdoors.
You can nd the group on Facebook
under OUTdoor Adventures Group.

Blind lesbian opera singer
shares story in new book
In the new book Do You Dream in
Color?, author Laurie Rubin says she has
a lot to sing about.
Within months of her birth, Rubins
parents knew there was something
unusual about their daughter. Baby Laurie
didnt look at people the way other infants
did and it took several doctor visits to
learn why: her retinas never developed.
She could see light, but nothing more.
And yet that was never an obstacle for
Laurie.
Cant wasnt an option. When she
expressed frustration at not being able
to read, her parents found someone to
teach her Braille. She camped, skied
and, after being taught some basics in
mobility, was eventually mainstreamed
into public school. She learned that
she loved to sing and was very good
at it even landing a small gig on an
album with her friend and mentor, Kenny
Loggins.
High school changed a lot of things,
though. Laurie struggled with math and
with friendship. Mean girls lived up to
their sobriquet and Laurie was often left
out of conversations and cliques. Boys
didnt avoid her, but they didnt interest
her much, either.
For Laurie, music was solace.
She took voice lessons and entered
contests. She practiced and performed in
front of peers. When it came time to go to
college, she chose Oberlin in Ohio, aiming
at a career in opera. Later, she was accepted
for graduate school at Yale Opera.
It was there that she gained a furry
guide and met the love of her life, Jenny.
Today, Rubin lives in New York with
Jenny and their dogs. Rubin, a mezzo-
soprano, performs as often as possible
and her dreams, she says, are like those of
anybody elses. Its the daydreams that are
most important.
Do You Dream in Color? has
a wonderful message in it. Theres
empowerment here, and perseverance.
Its inspiring, but also very clunky.
Part of the problem, I think, is that
much of this book consists of quoted
conversation, which feels inauthentic. It
moves Rubins story along, but not very
well. I also noticed times when a name
occurred in the narrative without prelude,
making me guess at who the individual
was and how (s)he was relevant. The
mystery was usually solved, but not
always quickly. Add the fact that Rubins
story jumps around and, well, I had a hard
time here.
Overall, the message in this book is
great but the delivery method, not so
much. You might like it more if youre an
opera fan, but for most readers, Do You
Dream in Color? is slightly out of tune.

New buyers attracted to
job market, cultural scene
By DONNA EVERS
The Washington metro-area housing
market continues to be one of the stron-
gest in the nation, with many motivated and
qualifed buyers eager to purchase property
and call the nations capital home. Young
professionals are a growing and key factor in
this renewed interest in living the district as
the city is seeing a surge in popularity as one
the top cities to live in the country.
When you mention to a longtime D.C.
resident that Washington is now one of the
hippest cities in the U.S., they may look at you
in disbelief. But wait, its true. Some 20 years
ago, Seattle was at the top of the hip list, but
now D.C., along with Houston, has displaced
Seattle as being one of the top cities for at-
tracting young people.
In fact, the average age in the District
is 36 with some 10,000 people ages 25-
34, having moved here between 2009
and 2011, in a trend that will only con-
tinue according to top urbanists and de-
mographers. So why is D.C. now so ap-
pealing to young professionals?
One of the key factors is the job market
and the opportunities that abound for edu-
cated young professionals with everything
the city has to offer. The districts unemploy-
ment rate is among the lowest in the country
and career options are excellent in Washing-
ton, D.C. with the federal government and
all the spin offs in business, science and the
arts that radiate outward from government.
Young people see greater potential to fnd
employment and professional growth in the
District than other areas and can relocate
because they have the most fexibility to
move anywhere in the country to make op-
portunities for themselves.
Another big draw for young profession-
als is the citys dynamic and rich cultural
and social scenes. From the galleries and
museums, restaurants and nightclubs, to
the constant calendar of events and activ-
ities, the city offers something for every-
one to take part in and enjoy in a small
geographic area. All that the city has to
offer is easily accessible with walkable
neighborhoods and public transportation
that is extremely attractive to young pro-
fessionals who want to take part in it all.
One of the most noticeable elements
of this infux of interest from this genera-
tion is refected in the D.C. real estate
market. Downtown D.C. has never been
more popular as a place to live. There is a
litany of condo projects going up as well
as many investors shopping for redos
in the downtown townhouse neighbor-
hoods, hoping to renovate and fip
them, making a quick proft by selling
in this very competitive market with low
inventory. And thanks to the record low
interest rates, qualifed young buyers can
borrow enough to get a starter condo or
townhouse at about the same monthly
amount they would have to pay to rent.
So, the future for the district continues to
look promising with the expectation of con-
tinued growth that will be self-perpetuating,
making the city more prosperous and infu-
ential than it has ever been before. It is a great
time to be living in the nations capital at this
opportune and exciting time when there is
so much renewed interest and growth taking
place in this vibrant and dynamic city.
