PETE 314 Homework 10

1) A pump is pumping 50 gal / min liquid from a pressure of 29 psia to a pressure of 97 psia. The changes in elevation and velocity are negligible. The electric motor that drives the pump supplies 2.80 hp. What is the efficiency of the pump, if a) the liquid is oil (SG=0.85) ? b) the liquid is water ? 2) Calculate the theoretical power needed to compress 2000 mscf/d gas from 300 psia to 600 psia (under adiabatic conditions) if S.G. of gas is 0.7, k = cp/cv = 1.3 and the inlet temperature is 120 oF. 3) How many gallons per minute can be delivered by a PD pump with piston cross sectional area 10 in2 and piston stroke of 5 in., if the speed is 10 Hz? (1 Hz means 1 cycle in one second, where a cycle consists of one suction and one delivery.) 4) What is the (maximum) suction lift (in meters) for a PD Mercury pump at room temperature? (Mercury has negligible vapor pressure at normal temperature, for SG see the sheets.) 5) A one-stage centrifugal water-pump impeller rotates at N = 1800 rpm. The water enters the blades at a radius of 3 cm and leaves the blades at a radius of 18 cm. The flow rate is 0.075 m3/s. a) Making the following assumptions, The tangential velocities in and out may be assumed equal to the tangential velocity of the rotor at those radii. All frictional losses can be neglected. Calculate 5.a.1 the torque needed to drive the pump 5.a.2 the theoretical total head provided by the pump 5.a.3 the theoretical power consumed by the pump b) Making the following assumptions, the actual power consumption is what we calculated previously as theoretical in 5.a.3, the pump efficiency is 60 % Calculate 5.b.1 the total head the pump delivers (in m) 5.b.2 the total energy change the pump provides (in J/kg fluid pumped) 5.b.3 the total pressure change (in kP) the pump achieves if water is pumped 5.b.4 the total pressure change (in kP) the pump achieves if oil (SG.=0.8) is pumped 6) Taking the pump curve of Model 3656/3756 S-Group (on slide 10.21,) select the right pump for the following task: Lift 2000 bbl/day oil (S.G. 0.8) to 300 ft elevation and simultaneously provide additional energy compensating for 47 psi pressure loss in the whole flow system. The pump outlet diameter is 1 and the inlet diameter is 2 . a) b) c) d) What will be the optimum impeller size from this family? How many stages will you need? (Round up!) What will be the power consumption of the pump (in hp)? (Calculated from the efficiency contour and from the task) What will be the power consumption of the pump (in hp)? (Calculated from the interpolated power requirement read off from the pump map and multiplied by the rounded up number of stages)
