Research Program in Veterinary Clinical Pharmacology Program Description

The research program in veterinary clinical pharmacology at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine consists of studies designed to define and improve rational drug therapy in animals. The research focus consists of studies in a wide variety of animal species, including dogs, cats, horses, ruminants, zoo animals, reptiles, fish, and birds. Current studies focus on the disposition of antibiotics, antifungal drugs, anti-inflammatory drugs, gastrointestinal

drugs, and analgesic drugs in a variety of animal species. Studies originate from our laboratory, or are performed in collaboration with investigators at NCSU, other veterinary colleges, zoos, or pharmaceutical companies. For a descripton of the NCSU Graduate Program in Pharmacology, go to: Comparative Biomedical Sciences (CBS). The clinical pharmacology residency at NCSU is in compliance with the requirements for board certification by the American College of Veterinary Clinical Pharmacology (www.ACVCP.org). Program Supervisor
Mark G. Papich, DVM, MS, Professor of Clinical Pharmacology, Molecular Biomedical Sciences Department, College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Papich is a Past-President and Chairman of the Board of the American College of Veterinary Clinical Pharmacology. He also is a Fellow in the American Academy of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics and a member of the American Society of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics (ASCPT). He was elected to the Council of Experts for the USP and is Chairman of the Veterinary Drug USP Expert Committee. He is a voting member of the Veterinary Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (VAST) subcommittee for the NCCLS and on the editorial board of three journals. He has given hundreds of invited lectures and is author or co-author of over 200 publications. His interests and expertise: pharmacokinetics, antimicrobial therapy, analgesic drugs, and analytical methodology.
