Interlock Circuit

1.0 LEARNING OUTCOMES

1.1 Understand the operation of Interlock Circuit. 1.2 Able to construct the Ladder Diagram using the right contact as interlock.

2.0 APPARATUS / EQUIPMENT 2.1 CX-Programmer software 2.2 PLC CPM 2A OMRON

3.0 SAFETY AND HEALTH: 3.1 Make sure that the student follows the laboratory or workshop safety regulators. 3.2 Experiment must be conducted by lecturers or experienced lab assistance. 3.3 Always know the hazards associated with the materials that are being utilized in the lab. 3.4 Always wear appropriate protective clothing. 3.5 Never perform unauthorized work, preparation or experiment. 3.6 Be familiar with the location of emergency equipment fire alarm, fire extinguisher, emergency eye wash and safety shower. Know the appropriate emergency response procedures.

4.0 INSTRUCTION Operational procedure:

1. When the pushbutton (PB1) at rung 1 is pushed, Red lamp will be ON, thus making contact (01000) closed. Red lamp will be still ON although PB1 is released because of self-holding. Meanwhile, as the STOP pushbutton which is connected N.C. from the input channel, once it is pushed, Red lamp will be OFF. (Operation ends) 2. When the Red lamp is ON, although pushbutton PB2 is pushed, Green lamp will NOT be ON due to interlocking. To off the Red lamp, STOP pushbutton must be pushed. 3. When the pushbutton (PB2) at rung 2 is pushed, Green lamp will be ON, thus making contact (01001) closed. Green lamp will be still ON although PB2 is released because of self-holding. Meanwhile, as the STOP pushbutton which is connected N.C. from the input channel, once it is pushed, Green lamp will be OFF. (Operation ends) 4. When the Green lamp is ON, although pushbutton PB1 is pushed, Red lamp will NOT be ON due to interlocking. To off the Green lamp, STOP pushbutton must be pushed. INPUT OUTPUT

5.0 PROCEDURES 5.1 The ladder diagram is constructed according to operational procedures and Table 1. 5.2 The program is written and downloaded to PLC CPM 2A OMRON. 5.3 The program is run to determine whether the program have errors or not.

6.0 RESULTS / DATA 6.1 Operation 1; RED contact interlock

1. Rung 1; Red lamp is ON. 2. Rung 2; Red lamp contact became N.O. Green lamp will not be ON unless Red

lamp is OFF because of contact self-holding. 6.2 Operation 2; GREEN contact interlock

1. Rung 1; Red lamp is OFF because of Green contact became N.O. Red lamp will

remain OFF even if START 1 (PB1) is pushed due to the contact self-holding.
2. Rung 2; Green lamp is ON thus making the contact at rung 1 became N.O.

6.3 Program Table

7.0 OBSERVATION
7.1 When PB1 at rung 1 is pushed, Red lamp will ON, thus making the contact (01000)

became N.C. Red lamp is still ON although PB1 is released because of self-holding. If STOP button is pushed, Red lamp will be OFF and halt all operation.
7.2 While Red lamp is ON, Green lamp will not turn ON although PB2 is pushed due to

interlocking. To OFF the Red lamp, STOP button must be pushed.

7.3 When PB2 at rung 2 is pushed, Green lamp will turned ON, making the contact

(01001) became N.C. Green lamp will still ON even if PB2 is released due to selfholding. If STOP button is pushed, Green lamp will be OFF, thus end all operation.
7.4 While the Green lamp is ON, Red lamp will not turn ON although PB1 is pushed

because the circuit is interlocked. To turn OFF the Green lamp, STOP button must be pushed. 8 CONCLUSION The conclusion is the experiment can be done by student and we succeed to do the experiment.

More powerful interlock systems can be built by using computer based approaches. In this realm, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) represent the most cost efficient approach. The interlock logic is no longer hard wired, but coded in software. The PLC approach offers several advantages: Flexible system configuration due to modular hardware and software. Regularly scheduled background tests of PLC system and sensitive I/O. Comprehensive system self tests. Intelligent fault diagnostics simplify troubleshooting. Easy reconfiguration of the interlock logic. No mechanical wear and tear. Improved security due to logic encapsulation in firmware. 8.0 REFERENCE
