ANSWER (A) Aim Hypothesis Variables : To investigate whether carbon dioxide is required for photosynthesis.

: Plants need carbon dioxide for photosynthesis : Manipulated variable Responding variable Constant variable Apparatus and materials bell jar. : presence of carbon dioxide : presence of starch : presence of light, chlorophyll and water

: potted green plant, iodine solution, sodium hydroxide solution,

Methods: 1. Obtain two pots of green plants which have been destarched by keeping them in the dark for 2 days. 2. Set-up the apparatus as shown above. 3. Place the apparatus in sunlight for 3 hours. 4. Test one leaf from each plant for the presence of starch. Observation Plant Plant in bell jar P Plant in bell jar Q : Carbon dioxide / x Starch / x

Conclusion

: Plants need carbon dioxide to carry out photosynthesis. (B)

Aim Hypothesis Variables

: To investigate whether chlorophyll is required for photosynthesis. : Plants need chlorophyll for photosynthesis : Manipulated variable: presence chlorophyll Responding variable : presence of starch Constant variable : presence of light, CO2 and water//same variegated leaf.

Apparatus and materials : variegated leaf, iodine solution, alcohol, beaker, Bunsen burner, test tube, dropper, white tile, and forceps.

Methods:
1. Pluck a variegated leaf from a plant which has been in sunlight for 3 hours.

2. Test the variegated leaf for the presence of starch. 3. Record the observation by indicating the blue-black area in your drawing. Observation : After testing for starch

Before testing for starch

Only the green part of the leaf (which has chlorophyll) contains starch.

Conclusion

: chlorophyll is required for photosynthesis.

(C) Aim Hypothesis Variables : To investigate whether sunlight is required for photosynthesis. : Plants need sunlight for photosynthesis : Manipulated variable: presence sunlight Responding variable : presence of starch Constant variable been destarched . Apparatus and materials : presence of chlorophyll, CO2 and water//leaf which has

: potted green plant, iodine solution, alcohol

Methods: 1. Choose a healthy leaf from a plant which has been kept in the dark for 3 days. 2. Cover the middle portion of the leaf with two strips of black paper as shown above. 3. Place the pot of plant in sunlight for 3 hours so that the leaf can carry on photosynthesis. 4. Pluck the leaf and test it for the presence of starch. Observation : The part of leaf which received sunlight contains starch. The part of leaf which did not receive sunlight has no starch. Conclusion : Sunlight is required for photosynthesis.
