MAX HIXON - LEAVING YOU BABY -SLEEVE NOTES QUESTION ONE: My piece is in strophic form with an overall structure

of Introduction, verse ,chorus ,verse , solo, chorus, bridge and final shortened verse.The song contains no modulations from the key of D major. The introduction starts at 0:00 and continues until 0:26.The introduction is based on the melody from the verses and sets the melody in the listener's head.The introductions melody is played on a saxophone and a guitar rather than the voice that is usually taking the melody line throughout making some variation for the listener when the melody is repeated.The first verse is from 0:27 until 0:49 .The verse consists of the standard melody played over the chords in the key of Dmajor.The First Chorus plays from 0:50 until 1:24 and it follows a simpler pattern of chords and melody than the verse.The guitar solo based on the D blues scale starts at 1:25 and ends at 1:45. Next we have repeated verse but with different lyrics from 1:46 until 2:07.This is followed by a repeat of the chorus with a second melody from the saxophone underneath from 2:08 Until 2:37.This is followed by the Bridge from 2:38 until 2:57 this completely changes the melody and adds a new character to the piece.It is finished of by a shortened verse with a chord based ending starting at 2:58 and finishing at 3:20. QUESTION TWO: Looking at the instrumentation of the piece i decided to go for the standard rock n roll/big band rhythm section set up consisting of a Double Bass, Two Guitars and a Drum Kit. I then added the vocals to do the singing of the melody.I also added a saxophone into piece so that i could have an instrument to play other melody lines. The melody of my piece is very repetitive but has some interesting features such as a counter melody underneath the main one during the last chorus which was done to create interest to the listener.The melody in the verses has a pattern where it leaps to a note and then does a steplike pattern down to the note it started on. I used two different bass lines on the Double Bass I used the leaping between the root of the chord and the fifth of the chord and a standard one,three , five ,six ,eight walking bassline which I had heard in rockabilly music . The texture includes both Heterophony and Homophony and Melody Dominated Homophony. During the introduction the Guitar and Saxophone both play the exact same thing in the melody this is an example of Homophony used in the piece.The Melody Dominated Homophony is where the piece has the clear melody and the other parts of music play to harmonise and help get the main melody across.

QUESTION THREE:

I wanted to create a song with a rock n roll/rockabilly feel after listening to Rock Around The Clock by Freedman and Myres and Honey Dont by Carl Perkins so I used Two guitars, a Double Bass and a Drum Kit .I added vocals for the main melody and a saxophone for other melodies .I decided that rather than doing a fast song like previous songs i have written in the past, I would make a slower song. The vocals melody line was quite simple to give a feel of a partly improvised rock n roll piece and the lyrics were quite simple and made the theme of parting/leaving very clear.The two guitar parts both use palm muting but the palm muting is one of the only things that is in both guitar parts.I got the idea of using palm muting from the rocknroll and rockabilly music that i had listened to where nearly all of the guitars where palm muted.One of the guitars plays chords throughout the song creating the backbone of the song whilst the other guitar plays transition parts and solos adding a bit of excitement to the piece.The Double Bass is used to strengthen the part of the Rhythm Guitar and add some movement in there whilst the Drums keep the time. The saxophone was added on in a similar manner to the lead guitar playing little intricate parts and a counter melody. QUESTION FOUR: My piece uses many of the same performing forces as Carl Perkins Honey Dont such as The Vocals, Two guitars ,Double Bass and Drum Kit ,I did this because I wanted the piece to be of a similar style and sound similar to it. My piece is also in Strophic form like Don't Look Back In Anger and Honey Dont which i have done because i wanted my piece to sound like a piece of popular music.There is some vocal variation in the verses similar to Tupelo Honey by Van Morrison.There is an improvised guitar solo in my piece 1:25-1:45 and this is linked to the guitar solo in Dont Look Back In Anger Oasis in bar 33 of their song.I use a walking bassline in my piece from 0:26 which is the same as the walking bass pattern used in Honey Dont which is a cliche of the style of music I want to portray.The Double Bass plays Pizzicato rather than with a bow which is also a link to Honey Dont.I make constant use of chords One ,four and five which links with Honey Dont bars 15-29 as an example.My Piece has an Instrumental Introduction from 0:01 - 0:26 which matches up with My Mother Bids Me Bind My Hair bars 19 and this establishes the song this also is similar to the long Harmonica introduction in Flip Flop and Fly by the Blues Brothers.I use Doubling between the saxophone and guitar in my introduction hwich is similar to Honey Dont where the Guitar doubles the part of the Double bass in bar 15.My piece has solo parts in different places like Honey Dont has in bars 30-60 and bars 74-84. My drum parts have a shuffle feel like Honey Dont. My piece is in the key of Dmajor like Corellis Trio Sonata in Dmajor because i learnt that D is the most resonant key for strings and because i had a double bass i decided that it would be a good idea. My piece has no modulation like Honey Dont and i did this because wanted it to be fitting in with the style.My piece is in four four time like My Mother Bids Me Bind My Hair .My piece has conjunct diatonic melody like Berlioz Harold In Italy bar 4 onwards.My piece has a counter melody in the last chorus on the Saxophone this links to Berlioz Harold In Italy bar 93 onwards which is done on the oboe and cor anglais.
