ALIGNING OBJECTS IN NOTEBOOK 11

If you are among those people who really like (no, NEED) to have images and text objects aligned to the left or centered on the page, youll have to work a little. Im one of those people, and I find it rather tedious to get everything lined up just right on a Notebook page. But necessary. Click the Alignment button on the Toolbar. (If the Show/Hide Alignment button is not on your toolbar, you need to locate the Alignment button in the Customize Toolbar window, drag the button to your Toolbar, and click Done. You can also click View on the Menubar and click Alignment at the bottom of the drop-down menu.) In the Alignment dialog box, there are four checkboxes with options to consider. I usually check everything, or at least the first and the last. Two cautions: If you click the second and the third, the lines show on every page in all your Notebook files, and they must be removed before you present your file to an audience. CHECK BOX Shows guides for active objects Shows vertical page center guide ACTION Displays a guideline when you move an object into alignment with another object. Displays a guideline when you move an object into alignment with the pages vertical center.

Shows horizontal page center guide Displays a guideline when you move an object into alignment with the pages horizontal center. Snaps objects to guides Automatically aligns objects to guidelines when you move the objects on a page.

Exercise 1 Open the Notebook file named Alignment1 and click the Alignment tool. Select all options. Arrange our first three Presidents vertically and then horizontally. As you move an object, study the purpose of each line: both the fixed lines and the temporary lines. Before you close the file, de-select all the alignment options. Exercise 2 Experiment with the Notebook file named Alignment2, which has several more difficult tasks. Center-align the heading and the button at the bottom. Left-align the text boxes and the image. Link the bottom button to the next page. NOTES In some circumstances, you will need to use an old-fashioned technique to align your items. Really old. Draw a straight line with the Line tool and move the object(s) until you can eyeball the alignment. (Remember to delete the line.) At your computer, use the directional arrows to nudge an object just a little. I TOLD you that aligning in Notebook is a tedious process!
