VOLUNTEERS DEPLOYED TO ASSIST IN HURRICANE SANDY RESPONSE Red Cross preparing to respond across east coast

Red Cross preparing to respond across east coast if needed

Two volunteers from the Western New York region deployed ahead of Hurricane Sandy to assist in response efforts throughout New York. Beth Shook of Cuba, NY left Saturday for White Plains, NY to provide Shelter Management, and Janice Davis from Friendship, NY also was deployed to White Plains, NY for Health Services. In addition, the Emergency Response Vehicle from the Southwestern NY Chapter is on alert to be sent to affected regions as needed, and it is expected that several additional volunteers from the Western New York Region will be deployed to assist in the response to Hurricane Sandy in the coming days. The American Red Cross encourages people in the possible path of Hurricane Sandy to keep informed about the storm’s progress and prepare now in case their community is affected. The American Red Cross Hurricane App puts lifesaving information right in the hands of people who live in or who visit hurricane prone areas. This free app - available in English or Spanish - is for use on both iPhone and Android platforms. It gives users instant access to local and real time information on what to do before, during and after hurricanes. The app also includes a number of features that allow people to monitor personalized weather alerts in locations where family and friends reside and share information with others in their social networks who might also need it. Other features of the app include:

•One touch “I’m safe” messaging that allows users to broadcast reassurance to family and friends via social media outlets that they are out of harm’s way; •Location-based NOAA weather alerts for the United States and its territories users can share on social networks; •Remote monitoring of personalized weather alerts where family and friends reside •Locations of open Red Cross shelters; •Simple steps and checklists people can use to create a family emergency plan; •Preloaded content that gives users instant access to critical action steps, even without mobile connectivity; •Toolkit with flashlight, strobe light and audible alarm; and •Badges users can earn through interactive quizzes and share on social networks. The Hurricane can be found in the iTunes or Google Play app stores by searching for American Red Cross. The Red Cross First Aid App helps people learn what to do in an emergency in case help is delayed. Download all of the preparedness apps at redcross.org/mobile-apps. People can go to redcross.org for additional information and resources. The American Red Cross spends an average of more than $360 million each year preparing for and responding to disasters across the country and around the world. Those wishing to help people affected by disasters such as Hurricane Sandy are asked to make a donation to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief by visiting www.redcross.org, calling 1- 800-REDCROSS or texting the word REDCROSS to 90999 to

make a $10 donation.

THANK YOU VETERANS! Are you looking for a way to support our military? The best way to send an encouragement and support is by simply saying

“Thank-you.” If you see someone at a Veteran’s Day event take time to shake their hand and say “thank you for serving our country.” Also, check out the Holiday Mail for Heroes program running October 1st through December 7th. Continue to support by placing flags or flowers on the graves of fallen heroes. Write thank you notes and get well cards and send them out to local VA Centers. You can also support your Red Cross Services to the Armed Forces by donating to the Red Cross. Make a Plan. Build a Kit. Get Trained. Volunteer. Give Blood. RED CROSS OFFERS ‘SAFE AND WELL’ TO FIND LOVED ONES When disasters strike, loved ones can become separated, or lose contact with relatives affected by the disaster. If you have been affected by a disaster you can register yourself or search for others on the Safe and Well web site where your loved ones can search for information. Safe and Well is always available. During large-scale disasters like Hurricane Sandy, when internet and phone lines may be compromised, trained Red Cross volunteers can help you register using a paper form. Your privacy is preserved. No

specific location or contact information is displayed unless you choose to do so in your custom message. People will need to know your name and address or phone number in order to see your post. If you are having trouble reaching your loved ones in a disaster area, try searching on Safe and Well.

1. Visit www.redcross.org/safeandwell and click “Search

Registrants.”

2. Enter your loved one’s full name and then choose

Option 1 (search by phone number) or Option 2 (search by complete home address).

3. Click “Search Entries.”

4. Results will only show your loved one’s name, the date

and time of registration, and the messages they chose to share- just enough info to provide peace of mind until normal communications can be restored.

5. If your loved one is not listed, and if he or she had a

serious, pre-existing health or mental health condition, contact your local Red Cross to initiate an Emergency Welfare Inquiry. If you are ever in a situation to register yourself in Safe and Well follow these steps:

1. Visit www.redcross.org/safeandwell

2. Click “List Myself as Safe and Well” and enter information into all required fields.

3. Select at least one of the standard messages for posting

(i.e., “I am safe and well,” “Family and I are safe and well,” “I am at a shelter,” “I am currently at home”).

4. Enter a custom message, of up to 255 characters, to

further tell your story.

5. Click “Submit.” Your registration will now be available

to those who search. They will only see your name, the date and time of your registration, and the messages you chose to share. Your registration will automatically drop from the system after 1 year. For more information on Safe and Well visit www.redcross.org/swny The American Red Cross of Southwestern NY is a United Way agency. fb

NOTICE

As you know, we run many reader ads for government auctions, job positions, earn money at home, cash loans, credit cards, etc. Most of these ads come through state and national ad networks. Most of them are selling directories or listings of where to APPLY FOR what is advertised. This information may be available at less cost elsewhere. While these ads are screened where possible, we have no way of verifying the authenticity of their claims or the value of their product. The buying decision must be yours. If you have problems with any of these advertisers, please let us know and we will attempt to get you a refund. Most of the companies we have checked will refund their fees to unsatisfied customers. Read the ads carefully. Some charge a fee, as noted in the ad, directly to your phone bill when you call them. Once again, we can’t verify claims for every ad. Please consider their offer and make a voluntary and reasonable buying decision. Moneysaver Advertising

Reader Advisory: the National Trade Association we belong to has purchased the above classifieds. Determining the value of their service or product is advised by this publication. In order to avoid misunderstandings, some advertisers do not offer “employment” but rather supply the readers with manuals, directories and other materials designed to help their clients establish mail order selling and other businesses at home. Under NO circumstance should you send any money in advance or give the client your checking, license ID, or credit card numbers. Also beware of ads that claim to guarantee loans regardless of credit and note that if a credit repair company does business only over the phone it’s illegal to request any money before delivering its service. All funds are based in US dollars. 800 numbers may or may not reach Canada.

her 2004 wedding.
Options to wearing a
veil abound. A small hat,
tiara, ornamental comb or
bejeweled headband may
need to determine why
you are opposed to the
idea. Do you dislike the
taste of cake in general or
the look of a traditional
wedding cake? If you like
cake but not the standard
tiered wedding cake with
lots of frosting, you have
many options. You can ask
Tents
every flavor. The choice is
yours, and if cake is not
for you, there are
alternatives.
Before you axe the
cake altogether, remem-
ber your guests. Some
will expect wedding cake
and be sorely disap-
pointed when you don’t
serve it. For their sake,
you might want to ar-
range for a small wed-
ding cake. For those more
daring, dessert options
run the gamut from
pastries to pie. Sit down
and rank your dessert
faves. Have your spouse-
to-be do the same. Then
compare the lists. Do you
see anything in common?
Celebrate! Celebrate!

choice and pie is yours?
Instead of serving one
type of pie, set up a pie
bar with several types for
guests to feast on. They
might have a sliver of
peach pie, a sliver of apple
and a sliver of pecan. Still
not sure what to serve?
No problem. Set up a
coffee and dessert bar
with various sweets from
pastries to pud-dings.
This will satisfy a large
number of sweet tooths.
There is so much you
could serve in addition to
or in lieu of wedding
cake. Check out some
bridal blogs and maga-
zines, do a general search
on the Internet and ask
around. You’re sure to
come up with hundreds of
alternatives, so many in
fact that choosing just
one may be difficult.

LIZ SOBECK CROWNED 2012 JMH AUXILIARY QUEEN Wellsville, NY (November 6, 2012)- This year’s Jones Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Queen Candidates raised over $12,000 by selling tickets to the grand raffle. The drawing and the crowning of the young lady who sold the most tickets is one of the highlights of the Auxiliary’s Gala & Silent Auction. This year, Liz Sobeck, the daughter of Dennis and Ann Sobeck of Wellsville, sold more tickets than any of the other queen candidates. The Queen candidates is a long-time tradition. Each of the Auxiliary’s Twigs and several community organizations sponsor a candidate to sell tickets to the Grand Raffle. The young lady who sells the most tickets is crowned the Auxiliary’s Queen during the annual Gala. The runners up to Liz, were second place winner Stephanie Moline of Andover and, coming in third, Rachel Ellison of Scio. The remaining candidates for the 2012 crown were Leah Farwell, Rachel Fahs, Hannah Graham, Daesha Plummer and Madilyn Williams. “This was a wonderful group of young ladies,” said Kathryn Gilbert, who co-chairs the grand raffle with Sylvia Masin. “When you combine a generous and supportive community with a dedicated group like this, you have a very successful raffle fundraiser.” The Auxiliary has the express purpose of raising money for the hospital. The Gala is one of the major events on the Auxiliary calendar.

Boat Commission, Conservation Fisheries Inc. and SUNY Cobleskill. The stocking sites are located near Olean and Portville, New York and near South Carrolton on the Seneca Nation of Indian’s Reservation. The species is found 20 miles south in Pennsylvania but has been absent from New York for the past 75 years. In addition to their history in the Allegheny watershed, Gilt Darters occur in parts of the Appalachians and in the Midwest. Fish surveys have shown them to exist in only 12 states. Averaging two to three inches in length and reaching 4 inches, the Gilt Darter is a small-sized fish. In early summer, Gilt Darter males undergo a brilliantly colorful phase and develop striking yellow black and green shades across their back, explaining why their latin name means “attractive.” Gilt darters are bottom feeders and eat a variety of invertebrates including aquatic insect larvae and crustaceans. In addition to stocking, restoration of this species in New York includes understanding and protecting their critical habitats. While the exact cause for the fish’s decline is unknown, biologists attribute its decline in New York State to water quality deterioration and past siltation. Subsequent improvements in water quality and land use conservation practices bode well for the future survival of these fish. DEC will continue to monitor the status of Gilt Darters in the Allegheny River Watershed and is hopeful that this new population within the Allegheny watershed will become successfully established. More information can be found on DEC’s web site http://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/26039.html fb

COLLABORATIVE RECOVERY EFFORT RETURNS RARE GILT DARTER FISH TO THE ALLEGHENY RIVER Release of State Endangered Fish Aims to Boost Species’ Population in the Northeast In a collaborative effort to restore Gilt Darter populations in the Allegheny River Watershed, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and partners released approximately 1,200 Gilt Darter (Percina evides) juveniles into the Allegheny River and Oswayo Creek in Cattaraugus County in western New York. “Today’s effort is a positive step forward in restoring this species to its historic range, as well as increasing the diversity of our aquatic ecosystems,” said DEC Commissioner Joe Martens. “This stocking event represents a milestone in the recovery of Gilt Darters in New York and culminates years of collaborative fishery restoration efforts.” “One of the Service’s goals is to work toward fully functional and sustainable landscapes,” said David Stilwell of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. “This multi-agency effort to re-introduce gilt darters to the Allegheny River in New York brings us one step closer to restoring the natural heritage of this wonderful river. We look forward to working together in partnership on future projects in the Allegheny watershed.” “SUNY Cobleskill faculty, staff and students are all very proud of our contribution to this collaborative effort to conserve and restore the Allegheny River ecosystem,” said Dr. John Foster, Professor and Chair of the Fisheries and Wildlife Department at SUNY Cobleskill. “This project has provided a broad spectrum of opportunities for SUNY Cobleskill’s Fisheries & Aquaculture students to learn from and work with fisheries biologists from the NYSDEC, PA Fish & Boat Commission and Conservation Fisheries Incorporated.” According to John Arway, Executive Director of the PA Fish & Boat Commission (PFBC), “The inter-state cooperation in fisheries science and management supporting this project has been exceptional and should advance the recovery of the gilt darter and other rare species in the region. These efforts exemplify the “Resource First” philosophy of the PFBC’s mission and we are pleased to have contributed.” Classified by New York State as an endangered fish species, the Gilt Darter has been identified as a priority species for recovery efforts. Today’s release marks the first time that Gilt Darters have been stocked in New York waters, and represents a five-year cooperative restoration effort between US Fish and Wildlife Service, Pennsylvania Fish and

EATING HOME GROWN VEGETABLES THROUGHOUT THE WINTER By: Colleen Cavagna, Cornell University Cooperative Extension Community Educator You might be wondering if this is an article for the Southern states, but no, it really is for our cold northern climate. Gardening outside in your exposed garden plots might not be possible; however, we can grow delicious foods indoors without much fuss and NO weeding! Here are two methods that will keep you eating fresh produce throughout the winter months:

Microgreens are vegetables and some herbs that are grown to an incredible height of 1 to 2 inches tall. They are

then harvested. The great thing about microgreens is that they are so easy and cheap to grow. These are so easy to grow you can raise a batch both at home and work for added nutrition throughout your day! The photo is of sunflower microgreens from sproutpeople.org. Fill a shallow container that has holes for drainage; perhaps recycle a restaurant takeout plastic container, with potting mix. Pre-moisten your potting mix, (adding water to it before

it is added to the container); this keeps the seeds from all

floating to one area as the water is being absorbed. Plant the seeds into the potting mix and press firmly

into the soil or sprinkle a small amount of soil on top of your seed. No thinning is required as the seeds will be harvested before crowding is an issue. Keep the soil moist, but not saturated; don’t let shallow containers become dry or your seedlings will wilt and die quickly.
