FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MUSIC IN THE BARNS CHAMBER ENSEMBLES NEW SEASON EXPLODES WITH LIGHT 2 Stages for Amplified and Acoustic String Quartet with Percussion featuring works by Igor Stravinsky, Arvo Prt, Iannis Xenakis and George Crumb
Toronto, Ontario October 31, 2012/ On Saturday December 8, Music in the Barns Chamber Ensemble, with special guest David Schotzko, percussionist, will transform the urban-industrial Artscape Wychwood Barns Mainspace for another cutting-edge performance event. Known for their dynamic and innovative presentations, the concert, entitled Light, explores the essence of light in music. Featuring the heritage sites first-rate acoustics as the backdrop for the evening, Music in the Barns will offer yet another daring mix, combining composition with scientific imagery and taking its audience on a journey of the senses. Opening with Stravinsky's rhythmic and intense Concertino for String Quartet, the evening will move into a more reflective mood with three works by Estonian minimalist composer, Arvo Prt. Utilizing two stages over the course of the evening, Iannis Xenakis virtuoso percussion solo will be presented inthe-round, allowing audience members an intimate opportunity to get up close with the performer. The centerpiece of the evening is George Crumbs groundbreaking 1971 composition Black Angels: Thirteen Images from the Dark Land- a musical spectacle scored for amplified string quartet, 20 tuned crystal glasses and a myriad of other percussion devices. Woven into the evening are stunning projected images of microscopic florescent proteins photographed in the Brill Lab at Sick Kids Hospital Research Institute. The event includes a cash bar and pre-concert chat with artistic director, Carol Gimbel, cell biologist, Julie Brill, PhD. and moderated by York University Film Professor, Howard Wiseman.
