1. Introduction
The hybrid parameters for a two port network characterizing the small signal behaviour of the
transistor for an input voltage v

and output voltage v

and output current i

is
shown in Fig. 1 below.
This experiment describes the method to measure the following parameters for BJT.

Fig. 1: h parameter representation of a two port network characterizing the transistor small signal behaviour

For common emitter configuration the hybrid parameters can be represented as shown in fig.2
below:

Fig. 2. Hybrid parameter representation of common emitter configuration of the transistor

In the present experiment it is planned to measure following parameters for BJT operating at
1MHz frequency:
1) |h

2) |h

3) |h

A complete treatment should also include measurements of the phase response of each of
these parameters. However, these measurements are quite difficult and will not be included
here.

2. Measurement of h Parameters:
The basic technique of measuring the hybrid, or h, parameter set has been is illustrated below
in Fig. 3.

S. Schematic uiagiam:

Foi the cuiient expeiiment, we bias BIT in active moue. Configuiation useu is Common
Emittei with Emittei iesistance.

We use the following paiameteis heie:

vCC = Sv
R1 = SuK
R2 = 7uK
RS = SK
R4 = 1K

Input = u.1sin(wt)
w = 1NBz.

Foi the uc configuiation, vb = 1.Sv, so that ve = u.8v. This causes a cuiient of u.8mA
thiough R4. This iesults in a uiop of 2.4v acioss RS. So vc = 2.6v. Thus the tiansistoi
gets biaseu in active moue foi BC configuiation.

When a signal of 1NBz is applieu, CS shoits emittei to giounu, since then capacitoi
impeuence will be much smallei compaieu to R4, thus iesulting in common emittei
configuiation with emittei shoiteu.

Foi this, we shoit output to giounu, apply vsignal to input anu measuie the input cuiient
anu voltage. Note that since output is connecteu to vc by C2, so this conuition uoes not
affect my uc biasing conuitions.

Then h11 is given by:
