Stephen Kutno, Ph.D. EXPERTISE:


Adolescent literacy; Response to Intervention (RtI); 21st century teaching and learning
Steve Kutno is Director of Literacy and Learning Services at PCG Education. He is responsible for management of the firms Literacy and Learning service lines, with an emphasis on the areas of adolescent literacy, Response to Intervention (RtI), and 21st century teaching and learning. His recent project work has included district literacy action planning across several districts, 21st century strategic planning in Missoula, Montana, RtI consulting in Monterey, California and in Weston, Massachusetts, and support of PCG Educations EdPlan student success planning platform across several clients.

PRESENTATIONS, PUBLICATIONS
Dr. Kutno has been a presenter at more than 50 education conferences and has served as a peer reviewer for research journals. Among his many speaking engagements, he presented a paper entitled Driving students success: Leveraging technology to achieve data-driven instruction, at the 25th Annual Florida Association of School Administrators Conference and presented a paper entitled, Grading education professionals on student test scores, at the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) Annual Conference.

EDUCATION, GRANTS
Dr. Kutno earned a Bachelors degree in English and also in journalism and mass media from Rutgers University and holds a Ph.D. in Education from the University at Buffalo. His dissertation was entitled, Policy, practice, and learning in the English classroom: Making room for multicultural texts in conflicted space. A case study examining the way in which conflicting educational reforms affected classroom practices of two English teachers. Dr. Kutnos dissertation research was funded as a result of his collaborating with S.M. Miller, when they were awarded a grant-in-aid from the National Council of Teachers of English, 1995-1996.

EXPERIENCE
Dr. Kutno has applied experience in both large-scale and formative assessment development and deployment. Over the years, he has applied his classroom teaching experiences with his deep understandings of testing to drive towards more data based instructional design. More recently, Dr. Kutno has worked on several strategic initiatives to better define a number of larger urban projects. Specifically in these settings, Dr. Kutno skillfully facilitates a process of teaching and learning to develop a shared vision focused on outcomes. He works with districts to translate strategic plans into action plans with clear directions for classroom teachers and school administrators. Dr. Kutno has taught at all levels of instruction, grades six through graduate school. He has applied his background in curriculum and instruction to professional positions with a number of commercial organizations, shaping instructional products and strategic development. In addition, Dr. Kutno has designed and modeled comprehensive solutions for school improvement and overseen and coordinated client relationships.
