Living into faith
Tony Campolo tells of two young men who wanted to participate in Urban Promise, his inner-city ministry. Yet they had a concern: We dont believe in God. Can we still serve? After pausing, Campolo answered: Yes, you can serve with us, but youll have to pretend you believe. Youll have to pray and worship with the group, go to Bible study, teach the kids about Jesus, go through the motions all summer long. If youll do that, you may help. By summers end, these young men were no longer pretending; theyd come to truly believe in Jesus. Furthermore, both went on to become priests in the Church of England. We often speak of living out our faith, but what about living into it? Sometimes belief leads to profound experiences; other times, what we experience leads to profound belief.

groceries to start this program and a food supply to maintain a portion of the cupboard. We provide a bag of groceries every week to about 15 poor and needy families. Our economic times have generated a great need for food. So we extended our Wednesday community meal into the summer months, making it a year-round food program. Over the course of the summer, we served about 60people/week. Also, Wednesdays Community Lunch continues two other program components: a weekly bible study and a devotions period before lunch. We are feeding people both physically and spiritually. We are committed to sharing the good news of Jesus Christ through word and deed. We are very appreciative and thankful for the financial support from JUMC and for St. Philips UMC program support. We need to continue to pray for the folks from kensington and for discernment of Gods will. Elaine Cahlink, Program Director
The mission of St. Philips church is to share with others the gift of Gods love through our service, compassion, witness and life together. We are committed to sharing the good news of Jesus Christ through word and deed, calling people to salvation in Christ and to live the tenets of christian faith in love and service to others. September 2012 was our 13th year kicko for the Wednesday Community Meal. A continued poor economy coupled with high unemployment continues to increase the number of people we are feeding to 65/week. We serve many ethnic groups (Latino, black Asain) in the kensington area. Part of the food supply continues from the government but, at a significantly reduced level. However, your support both spiritually and financially enables us to continue the programs. Praise God for his love and JUMC service to others. This year one of our goals was to establish a food cupboard at St. Philips. The food program began in February. The JUMC January Mission of the Month supplied
Dear Elaine: On behalf of the students and youth at St. Philips Out of School Time programs, I would like to thank you and your church family for the generous gift of school supplies. The children we serve are of lesser means and appreciate receiving new supplies. They face challenges every day in school, home, and on the streets of Kensington. It is a truly a blessing to have the relationship between St. Philips and Jarrettown. The members of Jarrettown have an open invitation to visit us. We promise you will enjoy meeting the students and sta. Sincerely, Nancy Wolfe
With Gratitude
The Ewart Family would like to thank all those who remembered them with thoughts, prayers and cards, on the occasion of the death of Bobs dad, Robert W. Ewart. Dad lived a long life of love and accomplishments and confidently enjoys a new heavenly home! Blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted, Matt. 5:4. I wish to thank you for your cards, kind thoughts and prayers during this sad and dicult time in my life. Don is now at home and at peace with our Lord. God assures us that if we believe in Him we shall not perish but have eternal life. Thank you so much for caring. I am blessed. In Christian Love, Nancy Eddy
