panelists will offer their unique perspectives on the political issues surrounding our recent election, and provide Institute attendees the opportunity to have an intimate dialogue with leaders known and respected for their work in the political arena. NABJs leadership is hard at work making NABJ indispensable to you; creating projects and programs that will bolster the strength of NABJ, pushing for jobs, creating training opportunities and advocating for better representation of African-Americans in media coverage. This special conference offers networking and training opportunities to many journalists, equipping them with the vital information needed to improve political coverage. Journalists and media professionals will leave with resources to inform and empower news consumers. I would also like to give a special thanks to our conference chairs, Charles Robinson, Sonya Ross, and Wayne Dawkins, as well as their team for organizing such a great program. Dear Watergate Attendees, Welcome to NABJ Media Institute on Political Reporting, Watergate III: The Last Word on 2012 Election. What an exciting year for politics. The members of NABJ have helped chronicle the various stories at the local and national level across multimedia platforms. Reporters have watched the many twist and turns of the campaign season culminating in election night. Youll hear from those on the frontlines including newsmakers, reporters and analysts. It was clear when we started the first Media Institute on Political Reporting at the National Journal Headquarters (The Watergate Complex) we had crossed a threshold. The number of political reporters in NABJ was increasing. Some had progressed from local coverage of politics to cover national campaigns. By 2004, some of us wondered out loud if the United States was ready for its first African-American President. When candidate Barack Obama announced his intention to run for President we saw a nearly doubling of Black political reporters and an increase of other minorities on the political beat. NABJs Watergate Conference (as it has become known) is a must-attend event for anyone wanting to be on the inside of the political game. First, we want to thank our sponsors who share our vision that the media should reflect our society. It takes a team of people to pull off an endeavor like this. We want to thank the NABJ Political Reporters Taskforce that provides guidance and assistance. NABJ staff is invaluable when it comes to coordinating an event of this nature. ounded by 44 men and women on December 12, 1975, in Washington, D.C., NABJ is the largest organization of journalists of color in the nation. The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) is an organization of journalists, students and media-related professionals that provides quality programs and services to and advocates on behalf of black journalists worldwide. Many of NABJs members also belong to one of the dozens of professional and student chapters that serve black journalists nationwide. The NABJ Media Institute offers quality web seminars and handson professional development, entrepreneurial guidance, technical training at national and regional conferences as well as sponsored events around the country.
